Book Description
The art of ceramics, the use of fired clay to create everyday utensils and art objects, goes back to the dawn of time. Since then, the many civilizations that have inhabited the shores of the Mediterranean have used the potter's wheel to produce a great variety of beautiful pieces. The work of Pablo Picasso emerged within the framework of this tradition. Those who love his genius-most seen in his paintings, sculptures, and prints-will be beguiled by this publication which comprehensively documents an exhibition of pieces whose everyday shapes were transformed by the artist's magic touch.
The lushly-designed book is a definitive guide to Picasso's ceramic work done at the Madoura Workshop in Vallauris-an area of his artistry is only now being fully explored. Not just for experts, it is designed for broader understanding and enjoyment of ceramics created by one of the world's most celebrated artists. It features a critical essay by the distinguished Spanish curator and art historian Kosme de Baraano, a section offering seven artists' perspectives on Picasso's work as a ceramist, a catalogue of sixty-three pieces fully-illustrated in color-many with multiple views, and an extensive glossary of terms that provides an explanation of ceramic techniques. Illustrations cover almost the whole range of forms and styles produced by the artist and include enlarged details of work; related sketches and drawings; photographs of the artist and his studio; and examples of Greek, Egyptian, and Mediterranean antiquities that inspired the artist's oeuvre.

Average flash information.......2006-11-07
While the author provided a few flash pointers, most of the information in the book is common sense. No information on digital photography either. Definitely only for very novice beginners.
This one's no good. Where's the flash book we all need?.......2005-08-20
I have to add my vote to the reviewers who consider the book pretty awful. The pictures are indeed uniformly terrible, and the content is a disorganized hodge-podge, barely succeeding in sticking to the subject of flash photography. It also seems true that there aren't many books on the subject. Attention photography writers! Here's a big opportunity for an imaginative and authoritative writer on this subject. Where are you? This is such an important and confusing topic, and of course amateur photography is burgeoning now. Surely you can outdo Ms. McCartney and rake in the dough.
Very disappointing, probably not the book you're looking for.......2003-11-26
As a photographer working with available light only, I bought this book hoping to learn to ins and out of flash photography.
A few pages into it realized that this book wasn't the one. The first chapter covers the fundamentals of flash operation -
how does flash work and the basic concepts to remember, and that was VERY helpful. But it was written sluggishly, which
made the reading tiresome, confusing, and un-exciting.
It's down-hill after that. I found later chapters to be off the subject, or irrelevant, or too general. For example, I didn't need to read about the difference between portrait photography and photojournalism photography, or the different style of people photography - I just wanted to know how to apply flash in both - and this information was missing, or too shallow. I had to fish for the relevant information among lots information that repeated itself but wasn't interesting, like the different types of camera that use flashes. The information I was looking for, like specific techniques and ideas, was scattered throughout the book in an unorganized matter, if at all.
The sample pictures were mediocre, at best, stuff that I wouldn't even consider showing my friends... Seriously, I was surprised to find pictures like this in a photography book. I didn't learn how to take good flash pictures in different situations, I didn't learn how to apply different techniques of flash photography to take special or interesting pictures, and I didn't learn anything that my flash or camera manual wouldn't teach me.
I wish I could return it to the book store, but I threw away the receipt. Very, very disappointing, not the book for anybody who has been using a camera for more than a few weeks. If this is the first time you've seen a camera, maybe. For everyone else - waste of time and money.
As good as it gets.......2003-04-30
This book "Mastering Flash Photography" by a professional photojournalist and travel photographer
(but not a wedding photographer) will teach you just about anything you want to know about how to use flash in a sophisticated way indoors and out.
It starts at the begining and ends by showing how to set up portable flashes to give results that look as though studio strobes were used. The professional tips can easily be transferred to simpler lighting techniques for your own camera. It doesn't get any better than this when you can learn in good, clear English what you need to know. It takes the mystery out of flash and makes it as accessible as day light. A real discovery for anyone needing help on flash lighting.
Straight to the Point.......2003-03-07
This book stands out from most photography how-to books because it doesn't talk down to the reader. It doesn't waste the first few chapters rehashing exposure, aperture, shutter speed basics. Instead it goes straight to the subject at hand - flash photography. The ratio of text to number of pictures is high, which is what I like. I find most photography books are written as if the reader has a short attention span and can't handle advanced details. I don't agree with readers who want more pictures or details on using flash in specific situations. It's better to understand the basic principles than to be spoonfed. The reader can figure out for himself what to do through experimentation, observation and experience. This book has so much in it that it will take me a long time to absorb it and implement what I've learned. My thanks to the author for getting me through my first wedding shoot successfully.

Book Description
From the creator of Maakies and Sock Monkey comes a mighty tiny book about a tiny, mighty mite, traveling from "ear" to there.
"The circus life sure is grand, but let's face it, I'm no flea! I'm an earmite, I gotta get me an ear!" So declares Mighty Mite the earmite, a wandering hobo of an insect whose discovery of a toy boat allows him to set sail out of the wild and in search of a "home sweet home," but not before a stint in a traveling flea circus along the way. Meanwhile, speaking of circuses, a lonely ape named Gabby has fled one himself and now scrounges for food and shelter in the back alleys of a strange city. But what does this have to do with our hero?
Mighty Mite unfolds via a uniquely inventive formal approach: the left-hand pages tell Gabby's story, the right-hand pages our eponymous hero's, and not before the last page does the intertwined fate of both become clear. Mighty Mite's pages are presented in luscious full-color, Gabby's in stark grey. Presented as a lovely yet inexpensive hardcover objet d'art, Mighty Mite is a wonderfully unique and elegantly crafted story for all ages and a perfect introduction to Millionaire's absurdist blend of gung-ho humor and exquisite pen and ink illustrations. Deceptively simple yet ornately packaged, this is simply a wonderful little book that will command reading after reading amongst children and adults alike.
Tony Millionaire is the creator of the popular syndicated weekly comic strip Maakies as well as the award-winning Sock Monkey comic books and children's books.

The Handsomest Man of the Movies.......2007-05-02
I am a lover of three romantic comedies, "Pillow Talk," "Lover Come Back," and "Send Me No Flowers." These comedies teamed Hollywood's best looking actor, Rock Hudson, and the effervescent and talented Doris Day.
I saw Hudson in several movies, his greatest role being Giant, a totally overrated picture and his deepest role being Seconds, a totally underrated picture.
I decided to find out more about him. I already knew he was a homosexual in a time when such a thing was considered verbotem in Hollywood. I knew he died of Aids.
This biography is a well crafted book that explores the actor's life, his disappointments (he was never considered a great actor), his loves, and the promiscuous way he lived his sex life. While the book does not dwell heavily on Hudson's love life it does inform us that Rock Hudson had probably hundreds of one-night stands, in addition to several long-lasting relationships.
I enjoyed Rock Hudson in his movies and my wife, who is not a fan of movie stars, calls him "a hunk." That he was. The chapters dealing with his illness and death are devastating because Hudson when all is said and done seemed such a likeable individual.

Book Description
The Symmetrical systems of the English Opening constitute a large and important area of modern chess opening theory. The strategic variety to be found within this book is staggering: from the sedate Symmetrical Variation to the wild gambit lines of the Anti-Benoni, and almost everything in between! This book provides detailed coverage of the theory of all lines stemming from 1 c4 c5. It includes many variations that often arise from different openings entirely, such as the Semi-Tarrasch, or when White avoids a Benko or Benoni. A particular highlight is the discussion of the Hedgehog, which a popular workhorse for many tournament players, as it enables Black to play for a win without taking undue risks. Throughout the book, though, Hansen shows that in many lines regarded by a lot of players as boring or uninteresting, there is plenty of scope to liven the game up, if one is familiar with the subtleties.

Detailed and Intelligent Coverage.......2007-03-31
Criticism of this book and subsequent downgrading of it because it is not a beginner's book is illogical. Not every book need cater to beginners, this book does not portend to serve itself to that audience, and what it does purport to do -- provide solid analysis and repertoire theory against various lines of the Symmetrical English -- it does very well.
The Chapters are broken apart, arranged, and layed outin logical fashion according to associated Pawn formations and move orders, and the tree-branch system of laying out variations is still the undisputable champ when it comes to laying out theory.
The book may lean a bit more favorably to the Black side of many variations, but his choices are backed by lengthy, detailed, and accurate analysis. Mostly solid bibliography. Aimed at 1800+ players and it will serve them well.
The Anti-Benoni Chapters are particulary good and alone are worth the purchase price.
5 Stars.
Not for beginners of English opening.......2003-03-29
After two weeks of study I have found that this book is great disappointment). After reading Hansen's impressive book: Dynamic english I found that Hansen's book of symmetrical english lacks essentially most basic element of good opening book: study of basic strategys and tactical tricks. Unfortunately Hansen's book is totally concentrated on chess theory.
The Symmetrical English is defenetily meanted for appr. +1800 ELO players with previous experience with Symmetrical English. For those who do not belong to this group: this book is not for you.
Besides I found one telling example about level of analysis in this book: after moves: 1. c4 c5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4
e6 5. g3 Qb6 6. Bg2 Bc5 7. e3 Nc6 8. Nb3 Bb4+ 9. Bd2 Ne5 '10. Qc2 d5 11. cxd5, here Qa6!? is not mentioned (despite for instance NCO mentions it) at all leading to either to 12. Bf1 Nf3+ 13. Kd1 Qb6 with compensation (according to Nunns Chess Opening) or to 12. Bxb4! Nd3 13. Kd2 Nb4...(Sosonko-Suba, Tunis 1985) with rougly equal position.
This omission is serious chess theoretical mistake and one only hopes that there are not many of such mistakes in this book. However IMHO such error tells something about quality of the analysis, since Qa6!? is widely known and important option for black to play.
average off the mill opening guide.......2002-11-07
Millions variations with out explaining basic ideas behind them.
It's more of less guide with out any directions for an average
player. You better off buying Nunn's Chess Openings.
I kind of threw away money by buying this book.
Symmetrical but not dull.......2002-06-24
A book like I like!
The different systems are well separated with enough comments to choose your lines without having to read all the book. The author doesn't try to sell you miracles; if a system is often drawish Mr.Hansen won't try to hide it.

Gorgeous works by Bagirov.......2002-05-31
I have been stunned by how beautiful these two books by Bagirov are. I have become used to the cranked out works you see nowadays. These works, although fairly recent (1994 and 1995) hearken back to days of Polugayevsky, when books were written as labors of love, with tremedous care and depth. These books on the English are very special, and should be sought and bought. They go into tremedous depth, but also have constant explanatory textual comments.
Book Description
The Symmetrical Variation is one of Black's most popular and reliable methods of meeting the English Opening. It is a highly flexible system that can lead to a wide variety of middlegame positions. The early d5 systems can be highly tactical, while the Hedgehog variations rely on a solid strategic understanding. This book contains full details of all the latest theory, provides a thorough investigation of important concepts and variations and is written by a prominent openings expert. (6 1/4 x 9 1/4, 160 pages, diagrams)
Customer Reviews:
Seems good...but not for me........2002-08-29
This is the first opening book I ever read, and I must say that the lists of variations are overwhelming. Every so often the author includes 'ideas' behind a certain position, but I had trouble referring back to them in the jungle of variation lists. This book seems geared toward the more experienced (1800+) player than to someone looking to amass an opening repretoire. Perhaps I chose the wrong opening to begin with? Hope this helps.

Synopsis.......2007-07-11
First published in 1981. Volume 5 (1...c5) covers Black's most solid reply to the English Opening. This volume is the first comprehensive coverage of the Symmetrical Variation in algebraic notation and contains all significant developments since the author's earlier work English 1...P-QB4.
Watson's aim throughout has been to provide a practical balance of theory, discussion and examples. With encyclopaedic coverage and many original suggestions, this series gives the reader the ability to understand the complexities of the English Opening and to play it with confidence.
International Master John Watson is widely known as a player, author, and chess trainer. His books have won numerous awards including Book-of-the-Year awards for "Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy" and "Chess Strategy in Action".
Great author, bad proofreader. And the publisher, well..........2006-11-23
REVISED REVIEW: TWO STARS, not four (see below)
I was so excited that IM John Watson, one of the world's leading authorites on the French Defense (to which I am fiercely and unwaveringly loyal) and the English Opening (which I have played but find less worthy of fierce loyalty than the French Defense, and I have to face as Black), had come out with a book on the English Symmetrical, that I bought this book immediately after I found it. I usually prefer to wait until there are some reviews. I even paid extra to get it shipped quicker. As usual, Amazon did not disappoint; the books arrived exactly when Amazon said they would.
I opened the book and casually leafed through it, and was disappointed to find several typos and proofreading errors on a first, cursory review. A move was even missing from p. 81 (Black's 11th move, 11...Bxc6, which, while obvious, should not be missing).
The sort of errors I found were not attributable to Mr. Watson; such is his reputation that if he said the earth was flat, I would suspect he had something to back up his claim. However, there is no excuse for these errors and the publisher, Harding Simpole, should be appropriately castigated. An errata list should be the least that they should provide to the people who bought the book in good faith and, frankly, got less than we paid for.
So I'm awarding the author and content five stars, but taking one away for the shoddy proofreading. Watson should be proud, and Harding Simpole should be ashamed of themselves.
-----
Since I wrote this original review, I have communicated with the publisher, and they said they feel I was not misled. For $30, I think the buyer deserves more than a book merely translated into algebraic; at the very least, an error-check should be performed. I, however, DO feel I was misled, and if you are considering buying this book, you should beware of what you are (and are not) getting. I cannot change the star rating above, but I CAN tell you that it is now TWO stars.

Confused.......2006-12-23
I actually haven't read this book but I can't help notice that the picture on the front is of the University of Montana campus. As a Brown student from Montana, it makes me think I should have just stayed at home!
Well-informed but wordy.......2006-06-13
This book is an asset to any student applying to "most selective" schools because it gives detailed and candid information about what Ivy League colleges are looking for.
Although the basic message here is unsurprising (like another reviewer says, it boils down to "be the best"), a lot of the details are helpful. For instance, it addresses a few perennial questions like "B in an AP class or A in a regular class?" and "Is depth or breadth more important when it comes to extracurriculars?" The specifics will be helpful to anyone who is already basically familiar with the Ivy League admissions process. More importantly, the book represents a real-life inside perspective on the Ivies.
At the same time, it's not a very well-written book. No grammatical errors, but it's quite wordy, full of weak verbs and obvious introductory remarks. This sounds like a minor problem, but it makes the book much harder to slog through than Michele Hernandez' books (A is for Admission and Acing the College Application), which are just as informative, much better written, and in general a better place to start.
If you are applying to Ivies and do not have an excellent college counselor, and you have already read Hernandez' books, I recommend this book as a highly informative inside perspective.
One of the best!.......2006-03-04
One of the best book in the market if you want to know about college admission. By the way, you dont have to buy pizza instead of this book!
Hughes is amazing!!!!!!.......2005-12-25
brilliant guy, great advice
spend your money elsewhere.......2005-12-25
Common sense. Nothing insightful. Not worth the reading time.
Ivy league schools are prestigeous. They want the best of the best. The creme of the crop. You get the point. What else is there to it? Nothing really. Buying this book is not going to give you any smart aleck way to get into an ivy league, nor is it going to give you an enlightening moment where the clouds part and the sun comes out and you know which college you want to go to and what you want to do with your life.
I suggest internet research into the colleges you are interested in, talking to your counselor, reliable adults, or students in college. You will get more than you will from this book.
Gist of book in one sentence: If you are outstanding in some particular, pertinent way (academics, extracurriculars, prestigious awards) you have a decent chance.
No, really? who would have thought?
Seriously, it's not a poorly written book, just a BAD, uninformative book. I was looking for hard, in-depth statistics and facts on annul admission rates, test scores, etc. What I got were discussions and speculations and personal reflections on the author's heyday as an admissions officer. BOOO
Much better alternative: www.collegeboard.com and the college search it offers. Spend the money on pizza.
