Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive framework for the development of pictorial narrative in ancient art. Through the application of literary theory about narrative, particularly semiotics and structural analysis; the examination of ancient descriptions of real and poetic works of art; and a contextual examination of a wide range of works, Mark Stansbury-O'Donnell identifies the multiple levels at which narration operates, from the most basic signs to the object of narration for the ancient viewer. This study also defines and standardizes a vocabulary for pictorial narrative.

shoot underwater.......2007-03-26
The book seems to cover some of the basics. It does an ok job of covering the shoot part and and ok job of the editing part. If you are looking for details, I would consider a different book or two books...one specifically about getting the shot and one specifically about fixing the shot.
Good Start.......2006-03-13
This book is a good start for someone considering underwater photography with a digital camera. It touches on the important aspects of the subject and gives a very basic overview of what is involved. For the serious photographer, I would recommend the authpr's professional guide on the same subject. It has more detail and better images.
I should have read the reviews.......2004-08-25
It is a complete waste of money, like it sais in one of the reviews. Should have listened!!! This book is completely useless, the authors assume that you already know all about digital imaging and the book is just a review. You won't learn. Don't buy it.
Not what I was expecting at all.......2004-07-24
When I bought this book, I thought I would learn some ways to enhance my pictures with detailed examples. I was really disappointed when I saw that it wasn't the case. They show what they did with what tool but without any detailed explanations. "Before-and-after-color-balance" wasn't what I had in mind when I bought this book. I didn't need to pay 50$ to know that if I go through photoshop menus and do some tests, I would learn it sooner or later. I really think it should be mentionned that this book is intended for people that have beginner skills with computers. 30% of the book explains how to use a scanner...
The only way I would recommend this book is if you don't know much about computers and have no clue what photoshop is and want to know where the menu for Hue/Saturation is. Otherwise, don't waste any penny on that, instead, go to specialized website, you'll find tutorials that are a 100 times better than this book with real detailed examples.
A complete waste of money.......2004-07-21
I found this book to be a very poor educational source for digital photography and image editing. As a photographer who is switching from slide film to digital, I have read three other books on digital photography, including Peter Burian's "Mastering Digital Photography and Imaging". Burian's book (and the other two books) blow's the Drafahl's book out of the water(no pun intended). It's like comparing a Lexus to a Hugo. The Drafahl book is vague, poorly written, and provides minimal imformation on various topics. What's with the large print and skipped lines--it's as though they wanted to increase the number of pages to make it look like your getting more for your money. I have wasted my money to finance one of their dive trips.

Runaways Vol. 1: Pride and Joy
ASIN: 1593072848 |
Book Description
El Zombo Fantasma was the most famous and notorious Mexican wrestler on the planet, up until he was murdered ... apparently for throwing a match. Now the luchador has fallen into a strange land of purgatory, and the only way to avoid an eternity of fiery damnation is to return to Los Angeles and guard the well-being of a struggling young spitfire, ten-year-old Belisa Montoya. However, this role as an undead guardian angel gives El Zombo the opportunity to hunt down his killer ... and unearth far more than he bargained for. Don't miss this visually stunning pile-driver of pain from the tag-team of talented newcomers Wilkins, Munroe, and Washington!

Fresh, Fun, Fantasmatastic!.......2005-03-03
An entertaining salsa of genres, Dave Wilkins and Kevin Munroe have created an engaging superhero whose wearing of tights makes sense for once as El Zombo Fantasma was "the most famous and notorious Mexican wrestler on the planet." A villain, actually, the kind the crowd loves to hate, and he feeds off the attention, basking in the spotlight. He's murdered after taking liberties with a title match he's paid to throw, losing by disqualification instead of taking a fall, delivering a brutal move on the champion, Captain Courageous. When his murderer approaches, he at first mistakes him for a hypocritical fan, "asking for my autograph after spitting on me at the show."
Fast forward a year, key moments of his life flashing before him as he falls into some sort of purgatory, and El Zombo is presented with a deal: "Let me make this just as monosyllabically wrestler-friendly for you. If you no help girl and be good, you come back here and you go to hell for rest of... um... oh, yes... time."
The girl in question is Belisa Alejandra Marguerite Consuela Chi-Chi Montoya, a 10-year old spitfire and one of the most wonderful characters to pop up in comics in ages. While El Zombo's name is on the marquee, this is as much Belisa's story as his, and like Haley Joel Osment in The Sixth Sense went toe-to-toe with Bruce Willis, she more than holds her ground here as her own destiny is intertwined with her unorthodox, revenge-seeking guardian zombie.
Munroe spins a fun tale, compact but not light, with more character development in a 3-issue story than many comics deliver over several years' time. These are characters you care about and, when the story ends, want to see more of. Wilkins' character designs are distinctive and his layouts are as energetic as the Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat vs. "Macho Man" Randy Savage's bout at Wrestlemania III.
Hopefully there's a chance we'll see new adventures of El Zombo, and his precocious ward, Belisa, sometime in the near future.

Fun, fun, fun!.......1998-12-29
I quite like it. There are lots of creative fun-making methods which are easy to do but you just don't think of it. Kinda inspiring. However, owing to the cultural differences, I don't quite get the meaning of some of the paragraphes. Could anyone seeing this message tell me what the lines mean? Book Description
Anita Loos (1888-1981) was one of Hollywood's most respected and prolific screenwriters, as well as an acclaimed novelist and playwright. This unique collection of previously unpublished film treatments, short stories, and one-act plays spans fifty years of her creative writing and showcases the breadth and depth of her talent. Beginning in 1912 with the stories she submitted from her San Diego home (some made into films by D. W. Griffith), through her collaboration with Colette on the play Gigi, Anita Loos wrote almost every day for the screen, stage, books, or magazines. Film scripts include San Francisco, The Women, and Red-Headed Woman. The list of stars for whom she created unforgettable roles includes Mary Pickford, Jean Harlow, Clark Gable, Audrey Hepburn, and Carol Channing.
This collection has been selected by Anita's niece and close friend, the best-selling author Mary Anita Loos, together with the acclaimed film historian Cari Beauchamp. Their essays are laced throughout the volume, introducing each section and giving previously untold insights and behind-the-scenes stories about Anita--her life, her friendships, and her times.
Customer Reviews:
Very Interesting But Ultimately Unsuccessful Book .......2006-12-20
This book is like three books in one but instead of getting three books, you kind of get a third of three different books. It combines Cari Beauchamp's biographical chapters on Anita Loos' life and career, Loos' niece Mary Anita Loo's first-person remninicences of her famous aunt, and finally short stories or excerpts of Anita's screenplays or books, all mixed together throughout the book. It may have seemed like a novel idea but it's a bad format and not a pleasurable read.
The highlights are Ms. Beauchamp's chapters but her work does not reach the greatness of her superb biography of another lady screenwriter, Frances Marion, WITHOUT LYING DOWN. Part of the problem here may be she's not writing a "full" biography and may not have researched Loos as extensively as she did Marion, she's also a little too soft on Loos personally who like Louella Parsons never let the truth get in the way of a good story. Loos is pictured throughout as a sweet, long-suffering lady (this is somewhat of an "offical" biography given her niece's participation) but Loos' own Hollywood histories and even occasionally her novels reveal a more caustic woman not afraid to get a few digs in at those she apparently didn't like (Beauchamp herself mentions off-hand at one point that Loos disliked sweet Mary Pickford!!). The somewhat famous story of how Loos bad-mouthed Lillian Gish repeatedly to H. L. Menken and George Jean Nathan (both of whom were eager to meet her) is usually told in comic tones, as if she were playing with them, but to me it suggests a aggressive woman who did not want another female as competition for the attention of the two literary giants.
Mary Anita Loos' memories of her beloved aunt are quite charming if sugar-coated although she spares Anita's eccentric, neurotic husband John Emerson nothing. He must have had something to keep Anita at his beck and call for so long besides "duty". Mary Anita Loos passed away not long after the book's publication, like her famous aunt she made it into her 90's. Mary Anita had a modest career as a screenwriter herself and later in the 1960's wrote a number of best-selling potboiler novels, she had a good life story of her own and it would have been nice to read more about it.
And finally there's Anita. This outrageously funny and clever gal, part Mae West and part Dorothy Parker, wrote a number of superb screenplays and entertaining if at times dubious Hollywood histories. I'm less impressed with her novels but they are usually fun and entertaining (though at times irritating as well). Hacking up Anita's work into "greatest hits" here doesn't quite work however, especially when some of the essential great hits of her career are not featured. I do wish that instead of this one book we had gotten three different volumes, a straight-out biography from Beauchamp, a full memoir from Mary Anita, and finally a collection of Anita's writing. Anita Loos was one of the most creative women Hollywood ever knew and she was trail-blazing enough to have deserve the three full treatments.

Fun Boogie Intro.......2007-04-21
I haven't played piano much since I was a little kid but when the time came to start playing again, I knew I'd have to re-learn some boogie. This book and CD has a nice mix of fun tunes that are giving me plenty of challenge. Not that it takes much to challenge my stiff and wobbly fingers.

Life @ Work.......2007-09-30
I have enjoyed this book as a bible study with three other guys. The book has some great examples but sometimes Maxwell repeats himself throughout the book. As a bible study this lesson can get long!
Good addition to workplace ministry movement.......2007-09-10
I just finished reading John Maxwell's book Life@Work. Maxwell writes about what has been called workplace or marketplace ministry. This idea has been around for a few years prior to Maxwell's book (published in 2005) and written about by folks like Os Hillman. The idea is that we spend most of our waking hours at work. It is an area where we should be "salt and light." However, too often we hesitate to blend our work life with our faith life.
Maxwell looks at four areas: Skill, Calling, Serving and Character. Essentially, he shows through Scripture that our workplace skill is enhanced by God, that we can be "called to the workplace," that serving others is what Jesus models for us all, and that by modeling character we can influence the character of the workplace.
For me the most interesting section was about calling. I know others who struggle with this, and wonder what God's call is for their life, and what his plan is for them. Maxwell outlines different types of calling and provides guidelines to help readers understand whether or not they are following God's call.
Maxwell also challenges the church to help equip Christians for workplace ministry. He calls for a paradigm shift from a "traditional church" to a "work-life" church that is outward focused rather than inward focused.
The Scripture that says we cannot serve God and Mammon is often misunderstood. Other authors have addressed this cleanly. Essentially, it does not mean that you cannot mix your faith life with your work life. I find that actually counter to Jesus' teachings about being a light to the world. What it means is you cannot put Mammon above God. Keeping God from the workplace means you are putting Mammon in charge in the workplace, doesn't it?
I've enjoyed several of Maxwell's books on leadership development. He often uses the lives of Biblical characters as well as stories about real people to illustrate his points. I recommend this book for those who are seeking how to make a difference in their workplace.
Challenges you to look at your job as your calling from God..........2007-06-03
John Maxwell has written a number of outstanding books on leadership and personal improvement. In Life@Work: Marketplace Success for People of Faith (with co-authors Stephen R. Graves and Thomas G. Addington), he tackles the question of where the matter of your personal faith fits in to what you do at work. It's a book that should make every Christian think hard about their personal "calling"...
Contents:

Section 2 - Calling@Work: Called by Whom, and for What?; Called By Name; Called by Desire; Called by a Path; Which Calling Plan Am I On?
Section 3 - Serving@Work: Serving Nine to Five; It's Not About Me; Everyday Samaritan

Conclusion - The Church@Work
Notes; About the Authors
For far too long, the matters of your work life and personal calling have been treated as separate and distinct entities. Unless you're a pastor or monk, the issue of serving God with your gifts in the workplace isn't something that gets the attention it should. The authors examine a number of Scripture passages in light of serving in the secular workplace. The conclusion is that you can indeed be called to serve in your daily job without being secluded in a monastery away from society. The book will challenge you to exercise your skills to the highest level possible...
Great Book for Christians to Read to Help with Work Stress.......2007-03-16
This book, along with Doug Sherman's book, "Your Work Matters to God," are the two essential books for any Christian wanting to get a right understanding of the theology of work. They are superbly written with a lot of examples and questions to ponder, and I can't recommend both books enough!
Your Career & Ministry Are A Team.......2006-11-15
This book teaches whatever your career may be, you are to give your best. I like the phrase, "Being all of who I am and the best of who I can be at church, home, and work."
We are to give our best, after all, our identity comes from Christ. Continually work with positive attitudes, show kindness in our actions, language etc. Take pride in the work you are assigned. Thank God for the job.
We are blessed to have a job. We should strive daily to show love everywhere we go, in everything we do, and everything we say.
When we have a personal relationship with God our career & ministry have meaning!
