          4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile........2006-11-04

For anyone getting into or going back to photography, this is a very helpful book. Easily read and workable.

4 out of 5 stars Useful Darkroom tool.......2003-08-24

This book is useful if you are trying to dig deeper in your understanding of how Multi contrast papers work, however given the explosion of digital and inkjet printers in recent years, I wonder how much longer this excellent book will remain relevant?

3 out of 5 stars Not so usefull for me.......2003-07-09

Many charts and graphs of enlargers and materials which I cannot reach here, in the Russia.

5 out of 5 stars A great history & current very usable information........2003-02-12

I bought and read every page of all three of Steve Anchell's black and white photo information books: The Variable Contrast Printing Manual, The Film Developing Cookbook, and The Darkroom Cookbook. Why? Because he gives a mix of an historical view plus tells what to pick of the best current chemistries. He does this without bogging down in the actual complexities of a college chemistry course keeping it at a usable technicians level. Since he also tells you why you are using various chemicals or paper his books do not dumb down but instead give you fascinating useful information. Anyone serious about darkroom work will appreciate his insights and commentary about chemistry use. He lists so many historical and current B&W chemical formulas and their use that any B&W experimenter will find the books useful.

4 out of 5 stars Substance and Clarity.......2002-03-08

I could have written this book, but I am glad Anchell did it and did it so well. There is an introduction for beginners here that is just enough to set them off on the big adventure. There is some well presented thought on advanced techniques that will keep the advanced cases focused on the essentials and help expand their skill.

The author touches on how and why various approaches to Variable Contrast work and why you need to know. He compares the most readily available materials and suggests where they should be used.

He gives some direct and pragmatic recommendations about development and fixing. He also presents some practical examples of how to use multiple filter techniques where appropriate. He discusses pre-exposure and some other tried and true techniques that help manage contrast.

This book is a very good top-down, goal oriented approach. It is easy to read and remember because it never gets wound up in technique for its own sake.

If you are already competent this book will keep you moving in the right direction. If you are not yet competent you will have no excuses after you read this book.

This author needs a better publisher. I'd like to have an edition with test negatives and a coupon for a discount on the next edition. A better publisher could make this book a classic, must have.

Cartoonist Scott Adams gives us still more corporate belly laughs with a point in Dogbert's Management Secrets Revealed, the 10th book based on his wildly popular Dilbert comic strip. Taken this time directly from the word processor of world-class consultant Dogbert, it focuses on critical management responsibilities like keeping up with fads, implementing pointless reorganizations and demanding status reports. "Leadership isn't something you're born with," it declares. "It's something you learn by reading Dogbert books."

          Book Description

Behind the closed doors of corporate management lurks a manifesto so devious, so insidious, and of such diabolic power, it has the ability to transform normal human beings into paradigm–spewing zombies. Its purpose: to help bosses stick it to their employees. Its author: none other than Dogbert, the canine corporate consultant out to rule the world.

All too often, new managers make mistakes such as rewarding good work with good pay, communicating clearly and improving departmental efficiency. Dogbert shows that this could have devastating consequences: Employees begin to expect fair treatment and compensation, productive workers show results (making managers look bad by comparison), and the department's future budget allotment could be decreased because it spends only what it needs.

Drawing from his years of experience tormenting Dilbert and advising his boss, our Machiavellian mutt uses pithy essays, illustrated by scores of comic strips, to teach neophyte managers such potent practices as:

The power of verbal instructions: Sound like a boss while maintaining complete deniability!

Empty promises of promotion: all the motivational benefits, none of the costs!

Pretending to care: Learn how to hear without listening!

Incentives: Inspire employees by giving them worthless knickknacks!

Once again firmly establishing Scott Adams as the spokesman for the absurdities of the workplace (and Dogbert as the guru of sticking it to the masses), Dogbert's Top Secret Management Handbook is the perfect gift for all cubicle dwellers and their bosses.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Truly the way it is.......2007-02-07

Dilbert is funny because of the underlining truth in all that is said. EVERYONE that I have bought this for loves it.

4 out of 5 stars The REAL management handbook.......2006-11-05

If you, like me, have only experienced management at the receiving end, it is obvious that - judging by what management looks like - this is the kind of thing they learn at those conferences. Scott Adams has just formulated the theory that must be there behind all that dysfunctional, destructive practice. I had a lot of fun!

4 out of 5 stars The Dilbert Attitude.......2006-01-07

If you've ever been in the hi-tech rat race, you already know that the Dilbert comic strip is a documentary. You may also have started to wonder how all the pointy-hairs came to hold such similar sets of bizarre beliefs. Well, your worst fears have come true. There is a secret cabal of pointy-haired teaching, and this is its text.

About half of the book's volume is reprints of Dilbert comics showing the eerie illogic of the pointy-hairs. Those are interleaved with cynical advice to the would-be boss. Topics include motivating without actual reward, ignoring the conflicts between inane wishes and physical laws, and creating a workplace free from any risk of productivity.

Adams's cynicism is good for a few laughs, and certainly voices the nerd's-eye view of workplace foolishness. A lttle goes a long way, though, and his later books tend to drive the joke into the ground.

3 out of 5 stars Not Adams' best effort.......2005-04-11

While the classic comic strips included in this book (most dating from the early and mid-1990's) continue to be amusing, the rest of this book missed its target. Written as an over-the-top instructional guide for managers, it is takes itself so seriously that little of it remains amusing. Adams is clearly attempting to satirize bad management practices and abuses, but he might be trying too hard to be funny. While there are plenty of bad managers out there, I doubt that many of them are as intentionally bad as suggested here. This book was indeed a light read, and fans of the "Dilbert" comic strip should find familiar material here, but overall, "The Dilbert Principle" is a better book.

          5 out of 5 stars LOL.......2005-01-20

As luck would have it, I was reading Dogbert's Top Secret Management Handbook when an old friend showed up at my door with a sad tale. Rich was an IT guy at a bank in Florida that had gone through five buy-outs.

"I always survived before," he said. "So, I didn't think anything of it this time."

He did not survive this one. He told me how he was doing 90% of the work. The boss was a goof-off, who played a lot of golf, and there was a pretty new hire who really did not know how to program, but she had a great smile. Rich was a good team player-filling in for her deficits and doing most of the boss's work as well. So of course, the guy doing 90% of the work was the one who got sacked.

I even surprised myself when I found myself saying, "You have got to read this book," pointing to Scott Adams' cartoon book. Yes, Scott Adams may be a cartoonist, but he is also a highly accurate chronicler of corporate culture.

Since I am not a manger, I really don't know what possessed me to read this book, which I did despite Dogbert's "WARNING-- IF YOU ARE NOT A MANAGER PUT THIS BOOK DOWN RIGHT NOW. THERE ARE THINGS YOU'RE BETTER OFF NOT KNOWING."

So as a non-manager I am what Dogbert calls "a curious little wanker." Rich, who is now thinking of starting his own company, was about to benefit by my being such a nosey parker. I told him, "Everything you are going through is in here!"

What really endeared me to this book was the use of similes, which are peppered throughout, such as:

"If you hear a new management buzzword, jump on it like a starving squirrel on the last peanut on earth."

          And:

"Working in a cubicle has made my ego shrivel like a raisin on an Egyptian sidewalk."

The faulty logic is priceless, such as in this example:

"Doctors are satisfied workers; doctors work long hours-increasing your employees' workload will make them as happy as doctors."

There is an absolutely hysterical send-up of Maslow's Hierarchy of needs, and a chart of companies combining their synergies that will have you howling on the floor.

Now, if only Scott Adams could get the highly secretive Catbert to spill his guts for an entire book-wow, stop the presses!

                      Book Description

THE NATIONAL BESTSELLING BOOK THAT EVERY INVESTOR SHOULD OWN

Peter Lynch is America's number-one money manager. His mantra: Average investors can become experts in their own field and can pick winning stocks as effectively as Wall Street professionals by doing just a little research.

Now, in a new introduction written specifically for this edition of One Up on Wall Street, Lynch gives his take on the incredible rise of Internet stocks, as well as a list of twenty winning companies of high-tech '90s. That many of these winners are low-tech supports his thesis that amateur investors can continue to reap exceptional rewards from mundane, easy-to-understand companies they encounter in their daily lives.

Investment opportunities abound for the layperson, Lynch says. By simply observing business developments and taking notice of your immediate world -- from the mall to the workplace -- you can discover potentially successful companies before professional analysts do. This jump on the experts is what produces "tenbaggers," the stocks that appreciate tenfold or more and turn an average stock portfolio into a star performer.

The former star manager of Fidelity's multibillion-dollar Magellan Fund, Lynch reveals how he achieved his spectacular record. Writing with John Rothchild, Lynch offers easy-to-follow directions for sorting out the long shots from the no shots by reviewing a company's financial statements and by identifying which numbers really count. He explains how to stalk tenbaggers and lays out the guidelines for investing in cyclical, turnaround, and fast-growing companies.

Lynch promises that if you ignore the ups and downs of the market and the endless speculation about interest rates, in the long term (anywhere from five to fifteen years) your portfolio will reward you. This advice has proved to be timeless and has made One Up on Wall Street a number-one bestseller. And now this classic is as valuable in the new millennium as ever.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for any new Investor.......2007-08-08

I've been looking for more information on how to invest into this stock market. This book was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Not only did it help me figure out what kinds of companies to keep my eye out for, it also gave me ways and formulas to check out to verify if the stock was a good buy or not. I highly recommend this book!

1 out of 5 stars THE SMALLEST BOOK EVER.......2007-07-31

This is a MINIATURE book. Literally. 3 inces x 3 inches, "95 pages" with 30 or 40 big words on each page. Ridiculous. I can't believe such a thing was manufactured.

5 out of 5 stars Good start for investing basics.......2007-07-15

Excellent primer for how to consider investments from a qualitative perspective, rather than the number crunching quantitive perspective put forth by so many other writers. Peter Lynch demonstrates how amateur investors can have an edge on Wall Street professionals through our day-to-day interactions with businesses.

5 out of 5 stars Necessary read for any investor.......2007-06-30

Peter Lynch tells about the strategies and types of companies he enjoys purchasing that allow him to beat the market. The book is an easy read but the information in the book is necessary for any investor to continue his education in stock investments.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointed, very.......2007-06-09

the description was misleading, it's not a book, it's an excerpt in tiny, tiny pages. Very disappointed.
