Book Description
Photographing beloved family pets can be fun and rewarding-but also challenging. This book lays the foundation for taking fantastic pet photos by covering all the basics, from choosing a camera to deciding between color and black and white film for the portrait. After discussing all of the necessities of photography, various aspects of animal behavior and reasons why animals are difficult to photograph are explained. Also covered are techniques for composing pet portraits and turning snapshots into beautiful pieces of art. Incorporating a person into the picture, taking pictures of exotic animals, and inspiration for displaying and sharing photos round out this comprehensive guide to pet photography.

Good Service.......2007-01-16
Thank you for your prompt service. Your communication every step of the way was greatly appreciated.
Pet modelling.......2006-11-10
I found this book really useful for taking the best pictures ever of my four legged family members. I am not a professional photographer and just used to point and shoot. Now I have an idea of how to get the best possible picture. I've produced some great shots!
Do you need a book to put a coffee cup on?.......2006-07-01
I bought this book based on the rating's. Once it arrived i sold it as a used book on amazon within 5 minutes. If you need a book in the bathroom to keep you occupied, or if you want to see 1 or 2 good dog pictures. Then by almeans buy this book. But if you are a serious photographer then pass this on by. The best part about this book was the B&W photo of the pug. Plus i broke even when i resold it.
Not what I'd expected..........2003-07-29
As other reviews have indicated, this book may be very good for many people who might be interested in this title. I think it gives some great tips for amateur photographers on lighting, composing pictures, etc., and the tips can be applied to a wide range of pets -- not just cats & dogs, but birds, other small mammals, reptiles, etc. If you're not sure that you "have an eye" for photography, but you know a good picture when you see one, you may be very pleased with this book. However, I think it should be emphasized that the tips are very much oriented towards photographing your own pet, or possibly a pet with its owner -- not so much "pet pictures" in general.
Let me explain: I'm very happy with the pictures I get of my dog, and in general I have a reasonably good eye for photography. However, I've been volunteering at a local animal shelter, and I'm trying to get pictures of the animals there. Some of my dog photography skills transfer, but the cats can be a problem. I was hoping that this book would provide some specific technigues for getting your subjects to relax, catching their attention long enough to get a good shot of their faces, etc.
Basically, I need an approach that's more "Sears portrait studio" than "downtown art gallery". Instead, the author's first two tips on animal behavior are to start them young so they get used to being photographed, and to study their individual behavior (from the book): "Wildlife photographers spend weeks, months, and sometimes even years observing their subjects in pursuit of elusive images." This is very good advice for someone looking to get pictures of their own pet, but neither of these is really an option in my circumstances.
As I've said, for many people, this may be just the book they're looking for. However, if I find a title which better meets my criteria, I will try to add it to the "recommends instead of" field of this record. Happy photographing!
A purrr-fect book for pet lovers!.......2002-01-04
I've taken pictures of my pets nearly all my life, but until I read "How to Take Great Pet Pictures," too many of my pictures never captured the true spirit of my pets. After spending just a short time reading this beautifully-illustrated, well-written book, I now feel like I can finally take those great pet pictures I've always wanted, but never managed to create. Thanks, Ron, for the wonderful tips and the great inspiration!

One of the worst ever........2006-05-31
Horrible page layouts, terrible proportions, pony tails, little brown pockets, and lines, SO many unnecessary lines. Rob Liefeld is THE quintessential 90s comic book artist: over-blown, over-done, and over-hyped. Never has so little talent taken up so many pages. Run, don't walk, away from anything even remotely associated with Mr. Liefeld.
Rob Liefeld is at it again.......2006-05-25
If you're already familiar with Rob Liefeld's work then you will feel about this book the way you feel about anything anything else he's done. If you love it, you'll love this. If you hate it, you'll hate this.
If you're not familiar with Rob Liefeld's work here's the basics. Rob Liefeld has no formal training. Everything he knows, he's learned from looking at other people's work. His stuff is insanely detailed, but his propotions aren't always right (and occasionally they're downright horrible) and most of the time there's no backgrounds.
That being said, Liefeld has a good head for what's cool. Giant monsters, time-travelers, sword fights, the return of the Mutant Liberation Front, guest appearances by Deadpool, Wolverine, and the Thing and the Human Torch from the Fantastic Four.
The story involves an ugly four-armed sharp-toothed creature called the Skornn, more a force of nature than anything, that feeds on mutants, literally. Cable reassembles X-Force to help him take it down, but things get complicated another time-traveller named Jon Spectre shows up and recruits Cannonball and other X-Force members away from him, saying that Cable will cause a major cataclysmic event in the future. Things get more complicated when the Mutant Liberation Front shows up led by the Stryfe, long thought to be dead. (However it turns out that there's somebody else beneath the mask) But in the end, the Skornn is bigger than all of them, both figuratively and literally, and they must team together to defeat it.
This isn't brilliant, it isn't groundbreaking, it isn't socially redeeming. What it is is fun. It's a comic book about a team of superheroes who saves the world.
Ouch...not quite a legendary return..........2006-03-11
I have a certain fascination with the early 90s X-Books, mainly as a guilty pleasure-aside from Peter David's writing on X-Factor, the Jim Lee era on Uncanny X-Men/X-Men, and John Romita Jr. returning to the art chores on Uncanny X-Men-so it was with that in mind that I picked up this book. I was never the biggest Liefeld fan (I was more of a fan of Jim Lee's work at the time), but there were times when the Liefeld/Nicenza team on X-Force did some interesting things, certainly changing up the long time dynamic that Claremont had established. And I also have liked the character of Cable, despite his overly complex origin and background, so I figured it was worth a shot.
Frankly I wish I hadn't taken it.
The story, such as it was, is utterly incoherent; it appears to have been written solely to create splash pages featuring guest star characters (why oh why are Wolverine, Deadpool, and two members of the Fantastic Four in this?) rather than, you know, advance the plot. There's maybe two issues of story here tops, and it's dragged out endlessly, only to be resolved in the same old way Cable stories were resolved before, in terms of Noble Sacrifice. Plot threads are introduced and then dropped in pages, old ideas are rehashed for the ten thousandth time (a time travel story involving Cable, what a shock) and there's a SHOCKING RETURN OF A SUPPOSEDLY DEAD...oh heck, Strfye comes back in the utterly lamest and most pointless way possible, just so Liefeld can use his orignal concept for the character, and that serves absolutely no purpose at all in the plot. In fact, building a story around the unlikely return of Stryfe, with the same punch line, would have worked far better than this.
I used to cut Liefeld a lot of slack when he was the plotter/artist on X-Force because he was rather young at the time (I want to say early 20s?) but he's had almost twenty years in the business now; you'd think he would have picked up on rudimentary storytelling by now. This story barely hangs together at all, and isn't really the return to the old X-Force style I was expecting in the least.
The only positive notes? It's nice to see a return of the Cannonball of the old X-Force days (Nicenza always wrote Sam Guthrie as being a strong, talented leader), even if it doesn't quite last...Tabitha (Meltdown) is still hot, and gets a scene of utterly unexpected awesomeness, even if it doesn't fit the character a bit. That raises it to two stars ( 1.5 would be more accurate)
If you're feeling nostalgic for the early 90s period X-books, this is not the place to start.
I wouldn't exactly call it a legend.......2005-04-09
In the early 90's, artist Rob Liefeld made a name for himself with smash hit runs on X-Men, New Mutants, and his biggest hit of all, X-Force. Handling both story and art duties, Liefeld is pretty much the guy responsible for all the over muscled guy and abnormally big busted girl character models that became a mainstay in mainstream comics until about the late 90's, and there was never too much input into such things as story, character development, and dialogue. This TPB, collecting the six issue mini-series which re-unites Liefeld and script writer Fabian Nicieza, is pretty much what you would expect from the duo if you read the X-Force comics of old. For no real apparent reason, Cable and Domino re-unite X-Force to stop an enemy from the future, or something to that effect. You're never really sure what is going on because the action is incredibly inane and incoherent with characters popping out of nowhere and disappearing a few panels later with no explanation, and Liefeld's art hasn't changed one bit. Naturally, Wolverine has a guest spot, as does the Human Torch and the Thing of the Fantastic Four; all of which for no apparent reason. This is worth a look for a 90's nostalgia trip if you were an X-Force fan way back when, but for everyone else this is better left on the shelf, and you'd do better by checking out Peter Milligan's X-Force and the later re-titled X-Statix.

IF YOU HAVE NOT BOUGHT THIS BOOK, WHY NOT????.......2005-03-02
Karen Rinehart is an awesome writer! Yeah, yeah, so she IS my mom, but she and Erma Bombeck would have made SUPER friends if they met. Even though I've read some of her stuff a thousand times (no kidding!), I still laugh my head off and almost have to force myself to read becuase I'm laughing so hard! Anyone who does not like my mom's book is insane, I tell you, insane! Don't believe anything she says about me, though. It was my brother.
Invisible Underwear, Bus Stop Mommies and Other Things True .......2005-01-29
Cool Book! It is awesome to read stories that about things that have happened to most mom's and see such a funny and new way of looking at situations. It is a fun read that gets the mind turning. Sit down with a cup of coffee and see yourself or the person you would hope to be in Karen's stories.
Very disappointed..........2004-09-28
I had expected much more, so perhaps the problem was that I had great expectations. I grew tired of the stories and sometimes felt that the author was whining -- we all have days like that -- but I grew weary of the style. With the comparisons to Erma Bombeck I was expecting more. The author is no Erma Bombeck.
For Every New and Not-So-New Parent.......2004-07-15
Karen has done a super job capturing the essence of motherhood: Insanity!
Moms need to read this book to assure themselves they are not alone in their crazy times with kids.
Karen speaks the truth -- and it's funny!.......2004-04-28
Karen Rinehart combines a sense of humor with common sense to write charming stories that reflect what's "True to Life" for all of us. Her wit is keen, her style is familiar, and she tells stories that could come from her reader's experiences as well as her own. I'm betting she's the Mommy at the Bus Stop all the others can't wait to see every morning. Buy this book and enjoy! You can thank me later.
Book Description
Diverse in their art, paradoxically more celebrated abroad than they are at home, African filmmakers eke out their visions against a backdrop of complex historical, social, economic, and political practices. The richness of their accomplishments emerge with compelling clarity in this book, in which African filmmakers speak candidly about their work.
Featuring interviews with key personalities from a variety of nations, Questioning African Cinema provides the most extensive, comprehensive account ever given of the origins, practice, and implications of filmmaking in Africa. Speaking with pioneers Med Hondo, Souleymane Cissé, and Kwaw Ansah; renowned feature filmmakers Djibril Mambéty, Haile Gerima, and Safi Faye; and award-winning younger filmmakers Idrissa Ouedraogo, Cheick Oumar Sissoko, and Jean-Pierre Bekolo, N. Frank Ukadike identifies trends and individual practices even as he surveys the evolution of African cinema and addresses the politics and problems of seeing Africa through an African lens. Situating the unique achievement of each filmmaker within the geographic, historical, social, and political context of African cinema, he also explores questions about acting, distribution and exhibition, history, theory and criticism, video-based television production, and television's relationship to independent film.
N. Frank Ukadike is associate professor of film and of African and African diaspora studies at Tulane University.

The contributors to this volume investigate several themes about music's relationship to the literary compositions of James Joyce: music as a condition to which Joyce aspired; music theory as a useful way of reading his works; and musical compositions inspired by or connected with him.

SMART Facilitation - A very good read.......2007-07-24
Well written -- brief and to the point. Valuable even if you only read the first and last chapters. If you think you want to work on Facilitation skills -- get this book!
Good book to teach facilitation techniques.......2007-05-25
This book starts with good real time situations to describe the common problems in facilitation and how to overcome them. It helps both beginners and serious facilitators. Through a series of real life examples it teaches the best practices for effective facilitation.
An Excellent Resource!.......2007-02-13
I am the Principal of Cohesion Inc, a marketing & business consulting organization, and also a part-time course director in the marketing faculty of the Schulich School of Business, York University in Toronto, Canada.
Facilitation is an important part of my work and teaching, and as such I regularly review literature on this subject to discover new insights and techniques with which to experiment.
Whether you are new to facilitation or already an experienced practitioner, this book will serve as an excellent resource to build your skills in this area.
Best book on facilitation I've read.......2006-01-29
This is a wonderful, practical, well-written book, with 60 facilitation secrets that are worth far, far more than the price of the pages. In fact, I learned more from this book than I did from a nationally recognized Advanced Facilitation course for $1700.
The chapter on consensus-building, which introduces 4 common techniques for building consensus (Delineation, Strengths and weaknesses, Merge and Weighted Scoring) I found particularly useful. The 6 high-level agendas for common facilitated sessions (among them process improvement and issue resolution) are a must for every facilitator.
I would recommend this book most highly for facilitators who want to build on their existing skills rather than as an introduction to the field, as some of the secrets (those related to dealing with dysfunctional behavior, for example) assume some foundational facilitation skills. However, anyone interested in the field would benefit greatly from the secrets in this book. A truly great addition to the facilitator's library!
Great Book For The Executive Suite.......2005-06-02
The Secrets of Facilitation is a great book for facilitators, from those about to facilitate their first session to those of us who have been practicing for over 25 years. I counted over 200 Post-Its and notes in my copy. Beyond what we facilitators gain, the "secret" of The Secrets is the value this book will have to those in Executive Suites and serving on Boards.
All leadership teams are searching for new leaps in productivity. They are lean as can be, yet uncomfortably aware that the majority of ideas delivered by consultants (60%, 75%%, 90%+?) come from their own people. They need an alternative. Their answer lies in the first secret revealed by Michael Wilkinson, "You can achieve more effective results when solutions are created, understood, and accepted by the people impacted." The rest of the book reveals how to do so. Now executives can choose to use in-house facilitators and their own people to develop and deliver the majority of solutions, and outside facilitators and top talent consultants only when truly needed.
Most executives I meet have experienced a session of the caliber delivered by a true Master Facilitator like Michael. Many can recall exciting, highly successful sessions facilitated by a real professional. What they've lacked is confidence that similar successes can be repeated consistently. The Secrets of Facilitation reveals a set of skills that can be learned and can permeate any organization. Michael's efforts in researching, teaching, and now writing this book will accelerate the adoption of facilitation as a core approach for leaders in any organization.
I only know Michael from participating in sessions he's facilitated, my recent association with the International Association of Facilitators, and through reputation of even some of my own favorite clients who recommend him as "The Best". Even so, yes, I do have a bias for recommending Michael's book. First, with the success of his book there will be more business for all facilitators. Second, our own firm's focus is turning more towards facilitating virtual teams, where getting our clients to understand The Secrets becomes even more important!
Certainly if you can schedule Michael to facilitate a session, grab the opportunity, he is that good. Better yet, buy copies of his book, give them out to your full leadership team, and embrace facilitation as a way of doing business.
