5 out of 5 stars inspirational and informative.......2004-12-02

I bought this book because, like most photography students (I'm getting my MFA), I've always been fascinated by Cindy Sherman and also because I've recently found my own work stumbling into the terrain of feminity and the aesthetics thereof. I thought this book would probably be oversimplistic in the analysis of Sherman's work and mainly bought it to have an index of her images, but the text is actually refreshingly concise and clear compared to most of the photographic theory I've read elsewhere. As a seasoned photography student and a relative novice in Shermanland, I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to this Remarkable Artist.......2000-05-22

This short book can serve as a wonderful non-technical introduction to the work of Cindy Sherman. The book is filled with reproductions of her work from various periods in her stylistic evolution. Wisely, the author does not seek to didactically interpret Sherman's work for the reader-- instead she presents the material while raising a number of issues for the reader to contemplate.

For those unfamiliar with Sherman's work, one of the most striking aspects is her use of her own self as model in most of her works (especially those from earlier in her career). Her later works are a little more dangerous-- using dolls and other non-human subjects in often graphically subversive sexual contortions.

Cindy Sherman is a true contemporary genius in that her works speak to a very large audience on various levels of meaning. My only reservation about the book is that it seems a little too brief in its discussion of Sherman's biography (although the inclusion of her early work is certainly revealing). One wonders about the "real" Cindy Sherman-- and how she differs from the "Cindy Sherman" that appears in the Untitled Film Stills that solidified her position as a great American artist.

            4 out of 5 stars A great photographic work........2000-04-05

I was just surfing around and stumbled in here. I've read this title, Anyone unfamiliar with the model in question should get this and anyone familiar should read this as it is one of the greatest books on her. The only reason this does not get 5 stars is pieces of it I thought were wordy and a bit belaboring. Overall a great read however.

If there could be such a thing as grunge comics, this is it. In fact, even Seattle Weekly said, "Twenty years from now, when people wonder what it was like to be young in 1990s Seattle, the only record we'll have is Peter Bagge's Hate." Hey Buddy! collects the first five issues of Bagge's Hate, a hip account of the life of Buddy Bradley. This book is a must for the coffeehouse crowd.

This is a timely parody of Hillary Clinton's latest book, Dear Socks, Dear Buddy: Kids Letters to the First Pets. The book is packed with humorous photos and commentary of the Clinton White House and the associated day-to-day shenanigans as seen through the eyes of the White House pets, Buddy & Socks.

What a fun and creative look at our former White House incumbants, ie. Buddy and Socks. Their view of life on Pennsylvania Ave. is not only enlightening, but highly entertaining! This book would make a great gift for anyone, no matter what political viewpoint or persuation they might be. It is a fun read--a great party or get-together icebreaker.

                    Description:
Some aspects of electric industry deregulation have caused our nation to inefficiently use its financial and physical resources, resulting in the potential inability of our markets and infrastructure to clearly and consistently minimize the delivered cost of power to consumers at an acceptable level of reliability. Fortunately, constructive solutions to this quandary are identifiable and implementable.

Why was I not shocked to find out that Nimrod was black and that he was a god? Even better was that he had an Oriental wife named Isis who was 13 feet tall who was the mother of all amazons. The fact that the book was written in the African story telling format is refreshing but sometime tedious because there are no chapters. Other than that the book jams a lot of history into a fast paced bloody story that is more like a sci-fi movie than a boring biblical history book. This was even better than Nimrod's Tower and I also discovered that the author has out an even better book called the 13 THUNDERS! Gots to have it, read it, it'll knock your socks off!

5 out of 5 stars The tower revisited.......2003-09-09

I was actually blown away by this fantastic book. Like Boulay and David Icke, O.D. Wells also seems to come to the conclusion that a race of reptilian gods inhabited the earth and engineered us poor stupid humans as slaves to work in the Garden of Eden, but the real mind-boggler to the story is how he explains what Heaven really was and that the Tower of Babel was in reality a huge rocket ship capable of reaching Heaven where the reptilian gods dwelled. Other not so well known facts about the heroes of the bible being reptilian hybrids and Osirus Nimrod being a huge 18 foot black giant also blew me away like no other book I've read so far (WHEW)! The book also covers Lucifer and his gang of devils, plus the two floods that happened on the earth a long time ago. Hey, I'm not one to mince words about anything far-fetched but once you read this book a whole lot of stuff that went on in the bible now makes a lot of sense. Highly recommended, a real religion buster!

4 out of 5 stars Need to be a true Grease fan.......2004-04-10

There's not a lot of new information in this book, unless it's about what the stars are doing now. There are lots of cool photos, although they're in black & white which is pretty disappointing. There are maybe a page or two towards the end, which are colour photos, but the black & white photos don't seem too clear for some reason.

There's not much reading to do either, and it took much about an hour to read right the way through. Didi Conn (Frenchy) was the perfect person to write a book about Grease. Whether she's babbling on about how drop dead gorgeous John Travolta, or that the actors were only a "little bit older" than the characters they were playing, she does it in such a bubbly way that you smile right the way through.

This is a terrific book, and well worth hunting it out on Ebay, or buying it used from Amazon. Mine was brand new, and managed to entertain me for a morning. But you have to be a serious fan of Grease. There is not a lot of new information, but the pictures are well worth it.

4 out of 5 stars OK book for the true GREASE fan.......2003-07-10

Didi Conn's book is OK for fans of the movie "Grease". Most interesting is her behind-the-scenes info on everything from famous scenes from the movie(like the "Greased Lightning" musical segment) to the premiere of the film. Some of her interviews with the stars are insightful and some of the photos are OK. But Conn should have perhaps hired a ghost writer as her style is a bit weak. Also, it would be nice if there were more color photos in here as well. True Grease fans will appreciate this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great behind the scenes information.......2000-07-03

If you love the movie Grease this is a book you have to have. It is full of behind the scenes information about the cast, play, and movie. It also is full of candid pictures from cast members. It also tells about the casting and production, and is an overall wonderful book!

                            Book Description

It's now over twenty years since punk first pogoed its way into our consciousness. Punk Rock: So What? brings together a new generation of writers, journalists and scholars to provide the first comprehensive assessment of punk and its place in popular music history, culture and myth. Combining new research, methodologies and exclusive interviews, Punk Rock: So What? brings a fresh perspective to the analysis of punk culture, and kicks over many of the established beliefs about the meaning of punk.

Punk Rock: So What? re-situates punk in its historical context, analyzing the possible origins of punk in the New York art scene and Manchester clubs as well as in Malcolm McClaren's brain. The contributors question whether punk deserves its reputation as an anti-fascist, anti-sexist movement, challenging standard views of punk prevalent since the 1970s, and discussing the role played by such key figures as Johnny Rotten, Richard Hell, Viv Albertine and Mark E. Smith.

Tracing punk's legacy in comics, literature, art and cinema as well as music and fashion--from films such as Sid and Nancy and The Great Rock `n' Roll Swindle to the work of contemporary artists such as Gavin Turk and Sarah Lucas--the contributors establish that, if anything, punk was more culturally significant than anyone has yet suggested.

Contributors: Frank Cartledge, Paul Cobley, Robert Garnett, David Huxley, David Kerekes, Guy Lawley, George McKay, Andy Medhurst, Suzanne Moore, Lucy O'Brien, Bill Osgerby, Miriam Rivett, Roger Sabin, Mark Sinker.

3 out of 5 stars Nick Knox was in the Cramps, not the Vibrators..........2004-06-07

When I first found this book I was suspicious, expecting a disaster of misunderstanding and pedantic musings that miss the point (and soul) of the vital underground/independent rock music of the mid to late 1970's. I myself have problems with the label 'punk', a term I'm old enough to associate with 1960's 'garage rock'. In the liner notes he wrote for the classic 1972 'Nuggets' compilation of garage and pop peculiarities, Lenny Kaye used the term 'punk' to describe the sounds and mindset of those 1960's gems. Academics and journalists engaging rock music always has its risks (Greil Marcus' pretentious 'Lipstick Traces: A Secret History of the Twentieth Century', for example, which gets some well-deserved criticism in the chapter I'm about to recommend).
But I bought 'Punk Rock: So What?' for a great a chapter that REALLY gets it right; 'Chewing out a rhthym on my bubble-gum: The teenage aesthetic and geneologies of American punk', by Bill Osgerby. He explores among other things the connections between bubble gum, the Monkees, and the Ramones, sidesteps any pretentious musings, and provides useful insights. The book is worth it for those valuable insights into the connections and influences of some great, inspired and timeless music.
By the way, drummer Nick Knox was a member of The Cramps, not The Vibrators, as mistakenly written on page 206, in a chapter by someone else. The name of the singer/guitarist in the Vibrators was simply 'Knox'; one word only. I saw the Vibrators, the original Ramones, and others in that halcyon year of 1977, and the Cramps some years after that. And bless ya, Nick, wherever you are. Thanks for your contribution to some brilliant and timeless music.
Oh, uh, pardon my momentary stroll down memory lane. This book will help to capture some of the essence of that essential 'cute noise' (Marc Bolan's description of mid seventies 'punk' rock) and its surrounding aesthetics.

2 out of 5 stars A little too pedantic for punk........2002-08-01

There is one fantastic essay in this collection, "'I won't let that dago by:' Rethinking punk and racism," by Roger Sabin. Its totally great, and I think its mandatory reading for anyone interested in punk. Other than that essay though....

Well, I picked this book up from the library hoping to get a little more context for the 1970s UK punk scene. Listening to Gang of Four, Sham 69, and Stiff Little Fingers day after day, I wanted some specifics. I wanted Margaret Thatcher horror stories and shocking welfare statistics. This book really doesn't do that. Furthermore, it kinda reads like a bunch of professors waxing nostalgiac about listening to the Rezillos and buying bondage pants. I'd have been better served re-reading the liner notes to Crass's "Best Before." This book might be a good resource if you're writing a paper on punk, but its not much use for someone with a general interest, and it doesn't touch much at all on social or political issues, which to me seem crucial to UK punk. But do check out that Sabin essay!

3 out of 5 stars Uneven but interesting ideas.......2002-07-10

A collection of essays, primarily about the British scene. The writing is very uneven, which gets in the way of some interesting ideas. In particular I appreciate the inclusion of essays on gender and race, as these issues are usually glossed over in books on punk. I also liked to essay on regional British punk in contrast to London, and the influences of surf & garage music and comix on American punk. These would be best as starting points for discussion, as each is fairly short, and has shortcomings.

This book is a great punk book i recomend it to all.

This was a wonderful insiteful book. Easy to pick up and read and think about each law. Very comprehensive. Covered catagories that I would never considered as part of wellness.

                                5 out of 5 stars Inspirational & Enlightening.......2005-03-25

Upon reading the first few paragraghs of this book, I knew it would be special. Anderson focuses on the holistic approach to living well. Laws such as being personally responsible for ourselves is especially relevent is these days where everyone claims to be a victim of something or another. The Law of Esprit: Realize that each day is a gift. The Law of Minimal Medical Invasiveness: You are the most important person on your medical team, not your doctor or anyone else. Take care of your health. The list goes on. Go ahead and buy this book; you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Laws you can actually live by.......2002-04-30

Greg Anderson's laws of wellness are not just words but actual laws you can live by. Each one can be applied to our own lives. I especially liked the the first law - the law of Esprit - the joy you feel is life! How true! I bought this book in 1998 and have read it several times. Yes, sometimes I need reminders on how I should be living. Excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars I read this book four years ago or so...........2001-05-17

I don't even remember the details of why i liked this book so much, but I can tell you the way it made me feel. Maybe this was the first book that inspired me, or made me pick Psychology as my major. Maybe it was the fact it showed me that cancer survivors can live normal lives or it taught me about mind over matter.. it was such a long time ago but I know that I remembered this book---its like you see a good movie or read a book that makes you feel like you can acomplish anything! that's what this book did for me.

5 out of 5 stars Laws to live by.......2001-01-21

The author has personally recovered from cancer ( near death - just30 days to live), by living the laws, he suggests others to live by. The key passage is in chapter 19 where he discusses how he discovered the law of forgiveness and applied it in his case. Similarly the law of unity is an important observation. We are body, mind and spirit. The book is easy to read. He uses no jargons. He also emphasises how these laws are connected to each other.
