Customer Reviews:
the worst of what art should be.......2003-02-13
Heaven help us in the arts if anyone thinks this book is useful for creating works of art. One of the projects uses foil as an armiture and then covers it with pariscraft gauze. I found this to be a very poor guide for creating sculpture, and an inforcement of the worst of what sculpture can be. There was some useful information here and there for the beginner, but not enough to make it worth the price of the book.
Wonderful introductory book.......2000-10-06
Peck's book gives a great overall look at the basic forms of sculpture. As an art teacher, I found it invaluable. She covers the main types of sculpture and helps you to create your own work with a limited budget (a great bonus). There are a lot of pictures to go with her easy to follow directions. If you are just starting, this is a great book to help you on your way.

Book Description
Models and Prototypes is the first exhibition in the Focus series, a collection-based series of publications and exhibitions intended to examine significant works from the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum's collection within the context of contemporary discourses.
As a preparatory step, models have always occupied a special place in the context of artistic production. This changed in the twentieth century when many artists set out to redefine the parameters of art and artistic production. With new artistic objectives, structural and conceptual models emerged as complete and viable works of art in and of themselves. Beginning in the 1910s, the model – conceived as a system defined by a set of rules – became increasingly important, as did boxes, model-scale display cases, and architectural maquettes. Marcel Duchamp and many Conceptual artists of the 1960s radically challenged existing definitions of the artwork with the help of structural and conceptual models and the emergence of an emphasis on multiples. The centrality of models for contemporary artists, many of whom are also interested in social and historical issues, presses the question of why they became and remain such a compelling subject and tool.
Models and Prototypes includes artwork by Mark Bennett, Joseph Beuys, Daniel Buren, Thomas Demand, Marcel Duchamp, Isa Genzken, Jenny Holzer, Wassily Kandinsky, Claus Oldenburg, Edward Ruscha, and Katrin Sigurdadottir, among others.
Essay by curator Catharina Manchanda, Ph.D., Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum.

Book Description
Award-winning photographer Adam Kufeld takes on the always popular subject of flowers in a fresh and provocative way, using a close-range lens to describe the intricate, surprising forms hidden inside blossoms. His macro lens allows Kufeld to capture detail invisible to the naked eye, and take advantage of the naturally brilliant color and suggestive forms of petal, stamen, and pistil to create images that transform their subject. His elegant, stylized, seductive portraits depict common garden flowers, including morning glories, bougainvillea, daisies, poppies, lilies, zinnias, roses, and passion flowers, as well as more exotic varieties, such as orchids. His original GiclÈe prints, on traditional watercolor paper, have been hugely successful in exhibition. Flowers: Portraits of Intimacy includes more than 60 photographs captioned with the common name of the flower and an introduction by acclaimed floral designer Rebecca Cole.
Customer Reviews:
Great photographs for inspiration.......2006-04-05
For a macro photography beginner the photographs were a great inspiration. One dissapointment with the book is that it does not mention how the photos were taken. Kufeld has used lighting quite creatively and it would have been great if he had provided some more information for others to learn his techniques.
There were a couple of photographs that were quite average but most were stunning. When I looked at some of the photos it felt like I was being led into 'trap'. Imagine how the bees would feel. This theme was little repetitive. But then maybe I am being too critical. I got it from a library, but I would recommend buying it.
Flowers: Portraits of Intimacy.......2006-04-05
As a professional photographer, I found this book extremely disappointing. I purchased it because of the 'good' rating reviews I read under its title and the one good photograph which is on the cover. His lighting is terrible and his 'point of focus' using a macro lens, along with the compositions, make absolutely no sense. The only thing I would use this book for is to lecture on 'how not to do macro photography'.
A visual, exquisite journey.......2001-11-21
Adam Kufeld's book on flowers is a pure delight. It is a fantasy book in the truest sense -- it allows your imagination to soar as these beautiful photographs take you from the depths of the sea to the farthest reaches of outer space, all in the limitless creation of your mind's eye. Kufeld's photographic vision turns flowers into abstract paintings, into fantastic creatures, into images so sensual that they should be viewed in the privacy of one's boudoir! Kufeld leads us into the delicate private sanctum of the heart of the flower, revealing the intricate gloriously rich world that is so easily overlooked in our hurried lives. What a delicious treat!
Flowers: Portraits of Intimacy.......2001-11-10
Stunning!!! I have just poured over my copy of this book and am amazed by the depth, color and sumptuousness of these photographs. Flowers will never look the same after you see this book. Mr. Kufeld has explored the inner sanctum of one of nature's greatest wonders as though it were uncharted territory. His gentle touch and perceptive eye have rendered the universe hiding behind each petal like a magical netherworld.
The Poetry of Flowers.......2001-11-08
The images in Flowers: Portraits of Intimacy, by Adam Kufeld, are reminiscent of Georgia O'Keeffe's erotic portraits of flowers, yet each one is wholly original. Kufeld brings details--a pistil, stamen, or ring of petals--into sharp focus, letting the background become softly blurred. The result of this selective emphasis is the creation of foreground and distances, so that each orchid, lily, daisy, and rose becomes a world unto itself, a beautiful, intoxicating world that the viewer longs to enter. Kufeld has captured the poetry of flowers--starbursts, silvery cascades, lips, fingers, and dazzling flesh. This is not photojournalism or scientific photography: it is exquisite art.

Customer Reviews:
Hilarious!.......2006-12-16
I LOVE portrayals of monster rabbits because I have one myself--I took him in when I found him hopping down the street one week after Easter--yup, he was one of those poor abandoned Easter rabbits. He repays me by acting the savage beast. It is hilarious to be attacked by such an adorable creature, and his is SO WELL represented in this book!
WOW! WOW! WOW!.......2003-12-15
GET THIS BOOK! This is fun to look at! What an imagination! Fluid and Beautiful designs make these drawings irresistable to stare at for hours. The artist is as imaginative as he is a talented.artist.
The Ears that Bite.......2003-10-10
Anyone who loves Monty Python, or who is a fan of Anya understands that rabbits are really voracious, man-eating creatures that hunt the night (or Knight) looking for the unsuspecting. And yet we continue to expose out children to them, believing that appearances could never be that deceiving. Finally, Michel Gagne has decides to take the lid of this secret scandal and reveal to the world the real horror that lurks between those sad brown eyes and cutesy tails.
Gagne was an illustrator in the well-known Don Bluth Studios until they closed in 1992. during that period he and another artist, Dave Kupczyk had a one-on-one competition about who could draw the evilest rabbit. While we won't know the real winner until Kupczyk publishes his own book, Gagne's rabbits are a delightfully evil and twisted as they come. The stuff of fluffy nightmares.
This is one of those books that is reserved for gag gifts for rabbit enthusiasts and excesses of cute, but it is fun for anyone that discovers it. Even as we speak, my cats are checking it out and whispering tales about that famous serial killer, Jack the Rabbit. You can't help but like this thin volume. Recommended for the light of heart.
Twisted Wabbits.......2001-05-03
What delightful book. Gagne in color is even twice the power of his other popular offerings. I think he has really matured into a fine author and every new book is a joy. All I can say to Twisted Rabbits is bravo. What great designer.
Pure Creativity.......2001-02-24
With his latest collection of striking pencil sketches the author charms, delights, amuses and frightens his readers. The central theme here is of evolution: the author presents us with his interpretation of the evolution of the rabbit species over the next 100 million years. Elmer Fudd Beware!
Book Description
Avant-Garde Film: Forms, Themes and Passions examines the variety of concerns and practices that have comprised the long history of avant-garde film at a level appropriate for undergraduate study. It covers the developments of experimental film-making since the modernist explosion in the 1920s in Europe through to the Soviet film experiments, the American Underground cinema and the French New Wave, structuralism and contemporary gallery work of the young British artists. Through in-depth case-studies, the book introduces students not only to the history of the avant-garde but also to varied analytical approaches to the films themselves - ranging from abstraction (Richter, Ruttmann) to surreal visions (Bunuel, Wyn Evans), underground subversion (Jack Smith, Warhol) to experimental narrative (Deren and Antonioni).
Customer Reviews:
A Solid Introduction to Avant-Garde Film.......2007-02-07
One of the major stumbling blocks for people first starting out on the winding road into the world of avant-garde film, is not so much the films, but the theory. The films are perfectly understandable if one is well versed in the techniques of cinema, in identifying those aspects of film form that oppose the mainstream and therefore can be broadly classified as avant-garde. The films are often playful, a complex game between audience and filmmaker is often played out and generally, to be just able to say what you see is enough to get by in terms of academic study. However most avant-garde filmmakers are not content with putting their theories onto screen, they also put them into print. The writing is a lot more complicated and dare I say it on occasion indecipherable than the films themselves. This is understandable when these artists clearly feel they have a cultural hierarchy to maintain. This makes Michael O'Pray's introduction to the major issues, figures and debates in avant-garde all the more enjoyable. It is accessible and readable and doesn't assume any pre-knowledge of the reader. It sets it stall out as a simple introduction and takes an historical approach to the development of avant-garde film. For those seeking something more deeper and more in depth, this slim tome will offer nothing new, but for film students and the casual reader this is an excellent starting point on this subject.
A fine historical overview of the avant-garde cinema.......2004-01-06
O'Pray does an excellent job here--and it's a daunting task. I had been looking (to no avail) for a text about the avant-garde cinema that is suitable for an undergraduate class that I teach. Finally, here it is!
It is, necessarily perhaps, a bit too sweeping (and thus at times lacking in detail) in its review of experimental films from the '20s to the present. But O'Pray writes in a clear, accessible style, and though he analyzes few of the films at length or in depth, this kind of analysis can be filled in by the instructor's supplementary handouts and by class discussion.
Overall, a highly recommended text for film instructors who teach undergraduate classes in experimental film.

Italy, the birthplace of opera in the late sixteenth century, has in recent decades seen remarkable and vital musical growth, with composers as diverse as Luciano Berio and Nino Rota, Luigi Nono and Sylvano Bussotti, Giacomo Manzoni, Bruno Maderna and Salvatore Sciarrino. The musical theatre has figured prominently in the work of Italian composers during this period, ranging from operas conceived in a traditional mode to works of a Music Theatre variety, and in style from popular to avant-garde.
In this book Raymond Fearn surveys this Italian musico-theatrical phenomenon in the period since the Second World War, examining a wide range of works such as Nono's Intolleranza and Al Gran Sole Carico d'Amore, Berio's Passaggio and Un re in ascolto, Manzoni's Atomtod and La Sentenza and Castiglioni's Oberon and The King's Masque, and places these developments within a cultural and theatrical context. Illustrated by numerous musical examples and producti

Book Description
Think you know the law? Guess again—the cases on this docket may open your eyes and have you arguing for appeal. They’re drawn from actual United States court records and selected for their intriguing facts and surprising outcomes. Can you figure out the verdicts? The answers are not as obvious as you might think. Experienced attorneys will enjoy testing their knowledge, and so will anyone interested in a challenging game that is certain to provoke heated discussions among friends. The cases are organized according to typical law school curricula, and each decision includes the court holdings and a brief explanation. In addition to such areas as contract and criminal law, the cases include second and third year “electives,” like wills and estates.
Customer Reviews:
The Verdict is In.......2005-01-04
Guess the Verdict is a fun and challenging way to learn how cases are decided in many areas of the law. It starts with summaries of cases culled from a typical first year of law school, such as Criminal Law, Contracts, and Property, and then delves into other interesting areas of the law, including Intellectual Property and Employment and Labor Law. The fun of this book is that the reader is required to test herself to see if she can figure out the verdict of each case. The author suggests reading the book on your own, or using the book as a game, with two players acting as lawyers arguing the case, or with three players, having one participate as a judge.
You can read Guess the Verdict in a few sittings or pick it up and then put it down after reviewing only a case or two. Each of the case summarizes describes the facts of real cases in a way that makes reading about the law fun and engaging
If you are a fan of legal thrillers and TV shows like Law & Order or you are thinking of going to law school and want to get a flavor for what you will be studying, Guess the Verdict is the book for you.
great collection of courtroom puzzles.......2005-01-02
This is a splendid little book of legal puzzles. It's an entertaining way to learn how the basics of law are applied in real life cases. It's very similar to the book, What's the Verdict? by Ted LeValliant from the same publisher - which I also recommend. The only quibble I have with the book, is that it would probably been a more challenging work if the final verdicts were separate from the appeals. But it's a fine little book!
Congrats Helaine! You're a babe and please write up some more!:.)))
Book Description
In today's tough economy, cutting prices and providing good service aren't enough. To be truly successful, innovative businesspeople must learn the art of Positively Outrageous Service (POS)-doing the unexpected unexpectedly and giving the customer more than he or she could hope for.
POS put customer service guru T. Scott Gross on the map in the early 1990s. For the first time in more than ten years, he brings these concepts into the 21st century with the second edition of Positively Outrageous Service. He examines what's wrong in the service industry today and how to turn those negatives into POS. In his signature, slightly irreverent, but always insightful style, he shows managers at every level of the service industry how to:
•Follow the four key Principles of Promotions to build a customer base, have fun, get people to your store, get people involved with your product, and do something good for others.
• Hire the right people and show them the fundamentals of POS.
• Energize and obtain the most creativity out of employees.
• Win over customers when mistakes happen, no matter who is at fault.
POS is not just a way of doing business, according to Gross, it's also a state of mind and the key to success in the 21st century. T. Scott Gross is a consumer advocate whose client roster for consulting, training, and speaking reads like a who's who of the Fortune 500. Countless businesses, including Southwest Airlines, FedEx, McDonald's, Sears, and Wal-Mart, have asked him to motivate the troops at sales meetings and conferences worldwide.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful!.......2005-07-25
This folksy compilation of stories about people and companies who deliver "Positively Outrageous Service" (POS) has the right mix to prove that people love great service and the companies that deliver it. The stories may meander, but author T. Scott Gross is so popular because he knows how to weave humor, personal anecdotes and actual business stories into a cohesive argument that almost all business is personal and local. This form of bottom-up business advice places great importance upon the front-line employees who represent your business. Gross explains that front-line workers can make or break your brand and your sales, no matter what size your business is. He provides good business lessons, so don't let the light reading mislead you. We recommend this book to managers of any business in the service sector who want to give their employees the power and motivation to deliver great service.
