Book Description
Gibbon Sengai (1750-1837) was known for his humor and unorthodox teaching style. A Zen master of the Rinzai school, he was also one of the most illustrious artists Japan has ever produced, known throughout the world for his calligraphies and paintings. Sengai went through years of hard monastery training before being elected abbot of Shofukuji, Japan's oldest Zen temple. Calligraphy and drawing became his primary modes of teaching and expression. Here are one hundred twenty-eight black-and-white reproductions of his work, selected and explained by the Zen scholar D. T. Suzuki. The commentary explains each piece of art, its context, and the Zen teaching it exemplifies. First appearing posthumously in 1971 (New York Graphic Society edition), Sengai is Dr. Suzuki's last published book—and it is said that he considered it to be the culmination of his work.

Divine Humor Guided His Hands.......2002-02-28
This is an informal and accessible guide to Master Sengai's work, a man who in his study of Zen stumbled rather appropriately into the ink drawing art of sumi-e as a means of revealing for himself and others the essence of wisdom. It has been said that the secret of the Tao is so simple that if it were to suddenly become common knowledge, laughter would be heard everywhere. Looking at Sengai's art is to experience that truth and I recommend this as an antidote to the stifling austerity to which religious traditions are so often view as being caught up.
Sengai's drawings book review.......2001-02-21
For the people interested in Zen this book is an excellent way to learn about one of the most influential monks in Zen history. Sengai was not only a monk, but a great artist whose art was expressed through his drawings. And this book written by D.T. Suzuki, author of numerous books about Zen, is focused mainly in explaining the meaning behind some of the Senagi's drawings. A negative aspect about this book is that the quality of the ilustration's prints is almost like the one of a newspaper. I tought I would find the same quality as the drawing from the cover but it was a big disappointment. Still, through the bad prints, we can appreciate the sublime art of Sengai.

Book Description
"Blonde bombshell," "It Girl," "uber-babe" -- Pamela Anderson, star of tv series Baywatch and celebrated Playboy playmate, mesmerized the world with a doll's face, pinup figure, sexy tattoos and a man-eating smile. In a tradition that extends from Jean Harlow through Brigette Bardot to Madonna, Pam is the sex goddess of the 21st century. Sante D'Orazio, America's most sought-after celebrity photographer, photographed Pamela Anderson in a one-day session in the Fall of 2000 on the terrace of a mansion in Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles. His images, for the first time published in Pam: American Icon, are both a visual study on the phenomenon of the blonde and a seductive collection of erotica.

It's a big book, but not many pictures........2005-12-30
If you're looking for another Sante D'Orazio collection, packed full of images like his last two books ("A Private View" & "Sante D'Orazio: Photographs"), this is not the book for you. What's not mentioned in the editorial review is that this is a companion piece/catalog for a gallery show held last Spring (2005) in New York. It's all about Pam, but in the end, there are 6-7 unique pictures with 3-5 variations on each image.

One of The Best Books In The Series.......2003-06-19
This book is actually one of the best book in the Calvin and Hobbes series. Since tis one praticullar book is not a treasury colection, the comics in this book are basically "new." The comics in this book are really funny and most of them have good points to them. Basically what I'm saing is that this book is great.
A refreshing read...A refresher to all adults..........2002-10-01
I haven't heard about this collection until my friend accidentally left hers in my house. Anticipating a lousy cartoon strip compilation, I was pleasantly surprised that it was very interesting & hilarious. As an adult, it gave me an overview of how a child's mind works. I have forgotten how imaginative & creative a child could be & realized how repressive I have been acting towards my daughter, just like Calvin's parents.
We all have been like Calvin in our earlier lives. We had a Hobbes as a best friend, a Susie whom we loved to annoy but loved as well, a transmogrifier & a babysitter who scared the hell out of us. We daydreamed in class, we played 'pretend' & lived life to the fullest.
It is so refreshing to witness such naivity once again. & though adult lives have robbed us of our youthful innocence, Calvin & Hobbes takes us back to those pure, clean fun days in a child's life.
Oh Watterson, my Watterson.......2002-08-11
It is my feeling that Bill Watterson had enough integrity and ethics to prevent the syndicate from cranking out endless meaninglessly repetitive compilations. Of course, he did quit partly because he was becoming disgusted with many of the commercial aspects of his work. With most comics, even good ones, the collections get stale after a few. Watterson's collections dont. There are a dozen or so C&H compilations/collections, but you wont be dissapointed with owning the whole shebang, especially since Watterson frequently did a lot of extra work to ensure that each collection had something new to offer. Even without this extra stuff, Watterson's body of work is extensive enought to warrant owning all these collections. He was steadily cranking out great material for a decade or so, and if you are like me you will be reading some C&H weekly for as long as you are on this earth, so tons of books is not a bad thing. Basically, I wholeheartedly reccomend all the books. If you like one you will like them all. They only get better as you get to know the characters. Watterson never goes for the cheap laugh by having any of the comic's principals act out of character. As you progress through the years with C&H, and I do reccomend reading them in order, you will see how art progresses and grows when the artist is committed to excellent work. So, go get the first one, titled simply Calvin & Hobbes, and then start down the enjoyable road to making Calvin and his tiger a pleasant little chunk of your life.
CALVIN AND HOBBES RULE!.......2001-07-18
Calvin and Hobbes are the funniest comic strips ever created. Although Watterson has retired and does not write them anymore, it's still great to have the collections.
"Something Under the Bed is Drooling" is a collection of earlier Calvin and Hobbes stips. The old ones are the best, I think. Every page is guarenteed to make you laugh. The book is hillarious, and is fun to watch Calvin in action as he takes on his grumpy teacher, monsters, the deranged babysitter, the girl from next store, and of course, his aggravated parents. One of the funniest strips in the book is when Calvin is writing on a sheet of paper and Hobbes asks him what he is doing. Calvin tells him that he is writing his autobiography. Hobbes is confused and tells him that he's only six. Calvin simply answers, "I only have one sheet of paper."
With great comics like Calvin and Hobbes, no one is too old to enjoy them. I say buy them all while you still can. They're great to read over and over again.
Calvin's Tiger strikes back..........2000-01-04
In my opinion, Bill Waterson is the greatest cartoonist I've seen. This was my very first C & H book and I thoroughly enjoyed it: one of the best. Unfortunately, Mr. Waterson has retired from cartooning, and Calvin & Hobbes is no more - one of the saddest tragedies of the century. In this book and many others, he could magically bring the cartoon to life, as only few others could do (Jim Henderson and Charles Schulz among them). Definitely worthwhile, gives a whole lot of laughs and perhaps a new view of life. I will always love Calvin and Hobbes as great cartoon characters and admire Bill Waterson for his talent.
Five stars, easy.

A vicarious return to childhood.......2007-08-18
What can be said about Calvin & Hobbes that hasn't already been shouted to the heavens by legions of prematurely grown-up fans ?
Calvin is the eternal Child/Id within us all, and Hobbes is his stuffed tiger / best friend / faithful companion in arms come-to-life ... and together they swashbuckle their way through a childhood world populated with drooling monsters of the imagination, screaming ray-guns, carboard boxes turned magical transmogrifiers, and giant tut-tutting adults who are forever dragging us back from our revels by the ear, in order to make us wipe our feet, bathe, eat, do our homework, and go to bed on time.
By laughing at Calvin & Hobbes, we get to vicariously relive some of our own carefree childhoods exploits ... exploits which echo in our adult lives, because (looks both ways) we never actually grew up. Only our bodies did.
Highly recommended.
Calvin and Hobbes by Nick Caruso.......2005-11-22
. I like this book because it has funny parts.
. I also like the part when calvin pretends to be GodZilla and destoys Tokyo, which is the buildings that Calvin made in his sandbox.
. I dislike someparts of the book.
. I also dislike the part when Calvin pretends to be a zombie.
and everything in this book makes you laugh.......2004-05-15
Calvin is in alliance with Hobbes to combat the monsters that lurk in his imagination. The victims of this battle? Usually, Calvin's hapless parents. This collection is among the funniest as it centers on the darker side of Calvin's runaway train of imagination: monsters, space creatures, icky girls, and nefarious snowmen. Pick it up, or the monsters in the closet will come out as well.
Calvin and Hobbes at their best.......2004-02-01
Well, I must admit I have had this book since I was in 8th grade when my best friend at the time gave it to me. I still crack up when I'm going through the pages upon pages of strange situations that Calvin and his stuffed friend find themselves in. Definately a must for any C&H fan and really funny. Buy it.
DOES it deserve anything less then a 5????.......2003-01-30
The 1st Calvin and hobbes book I ever owned, and one of the most treasured. Many people try to argue as to which is THE BEST Calvin and Hobbes collection, and although some like the 10th Anniversary Book are a must-have for any C&H fan, Frankly they ALL ARE THE BEST. All the collections rate as 100% satisfaction, and ANY book will provide great humor and entertainment. You can Never get tired or board of reading such books, EVER!
As regards the book, in general, it describes the various escapades and adventures of a 6 year old Hyperactive Calvin and his stuffed pet' tiger, Hobbes, who comes to life in Calvin's eyes and noone else's.
I DEFINITELY recommend this book to anyone who wants to enjoy a great laugh. This definitely rates as an all-time classic, and I wish i was able to give it more then a mere 5 STARS!!!

Chicago Days/Hoboken Nights.......2000-04-01
Daniel Pinkwater is noteworthy in many respects, but what fascinates me most is the way in which he manages to be brilliant, moving, and profound without ever accentuating the negative. This autobiographical collection of brief, bite-size narratives (perfect for bedtime, the bathroom, or the ten-minute break at work) chronicles Pinkwater's development as an artist/writer, and gives the reader the opportunity to enjoy the world through the eyes of a funny, intelligent man who truly loves life. This is a non-fiction, non-children's book by a children's author.

Customer Reviews:
If you liked ASIAN CULT CINEMA (which I did), then..............2002-03-13
Being fairly uninformed about Japanese cinema (the vast cultural differences often make me shy away from it), I did not notice the errors (aside from the occasional typo) mentioned by other reviewers. Nor did I detect any racism or misogyny, as alleged by others.
This review guide, along with the critically-maligned ASIAN CULT CINEMA, also by Weisser, is just plain fun reading. It introduces the reader to many heretofore unheard-of films. The reviews are spirited, and the ever-popular 4-star rating system augments them. Whether one agrees with the stated opinions or not is of course entirely personal.
I must say though: Shame on the author for giving the masterpiece WOMAN IN THE DUNES (1964) only 3 and 1/2 stars.
Completist, but a little shallow.......1999-12-24
For an introduction to the odder end of Japanese cinema this is pretty good. There are a lot of films covered, though the descriptions are somewhat sparse, and in certain cases downright misleading (ie 'Bounce Ko Gals' is described as "a respectable sex film"). Also a lot of typos and internal consistencies, and some startling omissions ('Kamikaze Taxi' and 'Tokyo Decadence' for exammple). This seems to be more of a catalogue for Weisser's own semi-legi 'Video Search of Miami' business. Also, it misses out on a lot of films which are covered in his other books, but once you've got one of these books, you're not going to want them all. The writing style is somewhat 'head-in-the-trough' and sensationalist. Similarly it is poorly laid out, though if all this sounds a little negative, it is the only conclusive coverage of Japanese cinema at its price range.
From The Author Of Asian Cult Cinema.......1999-08-28
Althogh the author professes to be a lover of this kind of moviemaking, there are racist undertones. He continually makes fun of Asian men in his books and reduces the women to the level of objects. Also, you have to wonder about a man who has actually WATCHED most of those movies....
Although it's not perfect - definitive a "MUST HAVE".......1999-02-09
Great enziclopedia for the movie-interested Japanophiles - but Tom has a strange taste and also his translations of the titles and of the directors are a bit funny!( but... you find nearly every film you 're looking for !) Never mind - definitive a MUST HAVE !
'Survey' would be a better title, sometimes inaccurate........1999-01-02
There is _alot_ in this book that can (and will!) captivate you about Japanese cinema. While the Weissers, like most critics dwell a lot on their personal favorites, the bulk of the book is left with brief 2 and 3- paragraph summaries I found all too brief for the movie(s) in question.
Occasionally I also ran into outright errors.
Here's one of those that I would not expect in a 4th edition. Example: Entry for NIGHTHEAD: Actor Toyokawa Etsushi's name is misspelled, the summary and analysis are _totally_ wrong. NIGHTHEAD: The Trial was a sequel/conclusion to the TV series, NOT re-edited snippets as they say in the review. The brothers are NOT therapists, they are working with the research group that trained them and fighting a corporation that wants to enslave psychics, the girl is not retarded, et cetera). I would have to say that 10% of the book contains these 'drive by' reviews that have very little to do with the movie in question, or that contain significant translation/spelling errors. I have to wonder if this book really is a 4th edition, or if it is the fourth time that it went to press....
Second beef: If you pick up this book, and then obtain one of the Weissers' 'Japanese Cinema Encyclopedias,' be prepared for redundancy. Basically, the movie reviews found in _Essential_ copied and pasted verbatim. (I found this to be true in the JCE of Horror, Fantasy, and SF).
Errors (when present) and all.
To be fair though this book does cover a lot of ground, and for those of us who are either first timers or old hands, it is great for introducing movies that would perhaps remain unseen to the general (non-Japanese-speaking) public. However, in my humble opinion the title should have been 'A Survey of Japanese Cinema.' For the sheer volume of movies surveyed, this book is (probably) unique, and worth a look.

Book Description
From the designs on Mondrian's paintings to the elegant organization of mathematical sequences, these puzzles all involve the wonderful world of patterns. Some use colors, others feature letters, and still more focus on shapes, but all offer plenty of entertainment. Suppose you have a supply of beads in red, green, and yellow, and are making them into necklaces that consist of five beads each. If each necklace has two beads of one color, two of a second, and one of a third, how many distinct necklaces can you create? Or, for another kind of pattern, try solving anagrams and deciphering cryptograms to unearth secret messages. Fold ten flaps into a five-by-five square to form a pinwheel pattern. Every problem is intriguing.
