    Book Description

This collection of essays by musicologists and art historians explores the reciprocal influences between music and painting during the nineteenth century, a critical period of gestation when instrumental music was identified as the paradigmatic expressive art and theoretically aligned with painting in the formulation ut pictura musica (as with music, so with painting). Under music's influence, painting approached the threshold of abstraction; concurrently many composers cultivated pictorial effects in their music. Individual essays address such themes as visualization in music, the literary vs. pictorial basis of the symphonic poem, musical pictorialism in painting and lithography, and the influence of Wagner on the visual arts. In these and other ways, both composers and painters actively participated in interarts discourses in seeking to redefine the very identity and aims of their art. Also includes 17 musical examples.

      Book Description

This extraordinary handbook was inspired by the distinctive concerns of anthropologists and others who film people in the field. The authors cover the practical, technical, and theoretical aspects of filming, from fundraising to exhibition, in lucid and complete detail--information never before assembled in one place. The first section discusses filmmaking styles and the assumptions that frequently hide unacknowledged behind them, as well as the practical and ethical issues involved in moving from fieldwork to filmmaking. The second section concisely and clearly explains the technical aspects, including how to select and use equipment, how to shoot film and video, and the reasons for choosing one or the other, and how to record sound. Finally, the third section outlines the entire process of filmmaking: preproduction, production, postproduction, and distribution. Filled with useful illustrations and covering documentary and ethnographic filmmaking of all kinds, Cross-Cultural Filmmaking will be as essential to the anthropologist or independent documentarian on location as to the student in the classroom.

4 out of 5 stars Good Resource for Documentarians.......2000-09-06

Although this book is geared toward professional, experienced filmmakers, film students or aspiring documentarians will learn from this text, as well. The book has thoughtful details, descriptive paragraphs, and helpful advice on how to create effective "ethnographic films." But despite this focus, the book's guidelines can be applied to any kind of documentary project. It's also simply a good read.

The first item I saw when flicking through this book was one that one of my players will be DYING to have - a double-bladed scythe. This book has "something for everyone," all right. It contains hundreds and hundreds of weapons, clothes, potions, foodstuffs, machines, contraptions, vehicles, and other equipment for PCs to obtain.

It is a d20 book, so is best for those playing D&D, but the ideas from it can be used in any game. Some of the items have quite interesting backgrounds that could give you a few ideas. The other feature of the book is that it is divided up into different "stores." This is so a DM can open the book and roleplay an encounter with a shopkeeper. It's a good idea, but a little impractical. I haven't tried it yet.

The only other problem is that there are no lists of items by type, only an index. However, this book is well worth it, and will give your players something to dream of finding.

          Book Description

If ever you suspected that economic humor is an oxymoron, read on. This anthology, offering over a hundred selections of economic humor in the form of essays, fables, cartoons, verses, parodies, and epigrams drawn from works ancient and modern, will disabuse you of that notion by way of laughter. The contributors, about evenly divided between economists and noneconomists, share a common urge to poke fun at economics and its practitioners. Their styles and methods, however, range from kind and gentle to mordant and misanthropic; this is not surprising given the diversity of their professions: diplomat, playwright, printer's devil, publisher, columnist, physician, inventor, minister, corporate president, radio star, New York Stock Exchange member, and philosopher, to name but a few.
Bringing economic humor into the light of day, Caroline Clotfelter gathers her collection of materials into recognizable categories: economists as others see them, the language and methods of economics, Econ 101, micro- and macroeconomics, and basic economic models and ideas. Aiding and abetting her include such luminaries as John Stuart Mill, George Bernard Shaw, Mad Magazine, Stephen Leacock, Emily Dickinson, Rube Goldberg, Pogo, and John Kenneth Galbraith. As no other, this book will challenge economists to enjoy jokes at their own expense; noneconomists may have even less difficulty finding something funny in this most dismal of sciences.
Caroline Postelle Clotfelter, former Professor of Economics, Mercer University, is now retired.

                Book Description

This is the first modern edition of the collected works of Supply Belcher, Maine's most celebrated early composer, who was known in his day as the "Handel of Maine." During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Maine was part of the northeastern frontier, a sparsely settled area that held to the old ways. Thus, its compilers reprinted and singers sang the music of Billings, Read, Swan, Holden, and other Yankee psalmodists long after a reform movement had swept them from the galleries of southern New-England churches. Belcher was a man much honored in the region as a musician, a public servant, and a civic leader. Following military service in the Revolutionary War, he opened "Belcher's Tavern," where local musicians frequently gathered for "sings." In addition to being a composer, Belcher was also a singer, a violinist, and a prominent member of the Stoughton Musical Society. He published seventy-four works between l788, when his first tune appeared in print, and 1819, when his final contributions to psalmody were issued. As this edition of his collected works reveals, his vigorous and skillful pieces show him to have been an original and creative spirit in psalmody, and even today are worthy of attention and performance.

                  Book Description

"Floyd has answered for many in this book a way to both understand and use the Commitment of Traders reports. In my thirty-five years as a registered broker and author of my own book, I find that at times someone takes a complex subject and makes it easier to understand. Floyd has done this with his book. Not only does he make understanding the COT easy, but he ties it to some technical trading ideas that readers can try out, using historical data on their own. Truly another good technical book for those looking to understand this often overlooked subject."
-- Ira Epstein, PresidentIra Epstein & Company Futures

"For many years, I've had requests from customers seeking information on the Commitment of Traders report but had few resources to which I could refer them. This superb treatment of the subject by Floyd Upperman, full of detailed information and innovative ideas on how to use them [COT] effectively in trading, is the definitive treatment of the subject in my book. I highly recommend it."
-- Edward D. Dobson, PresidentTraders Press, Inc.

"The Commitment of Traders (COT) can be a very powerful trading tool to help anticipate market direction. But all too often it is misunderstood and/or misinterpreted . . . Floyd's unique analytical interpretations, combined with his trading tools and indicators, will open a door to greater profitability for all traders."
-- Walter Bressert, President Walter Bressert, Inc.

"If you are interested in capturing major market moves, this is a must-read book."
                  -- Larry Williams, Commodity TraderIreallytrade.com

By understanding commercial activity and monitoring its behavior, a trader can potentially forecast significant changes in price direction. Author Floyd Upperman shows you how to use the Commitment of Traders (COT) reports to accomplish this goal. He skillfully explains how to break down the COT data into producers, consumers, and funds so you understand the positions and activities of these key market participants. In addition, he demonstrates how to monitor the COT activity so you can detect position imbalances that could be harbingers of major trend changes and illustrates his techniques for combining traditional technical analysis of price with the COT data.

""Floyd has answered for many in this book a way to both understand and use the Commitment of Traders reports. Truly another good technical book for those looking to understand this often overlooked subject."" -- Ira Epstein, PresidentIra Epstein & Company Futures ""For many years, I've had requests from customers seeking information on the Commitment of Traders report but had few resources to which I could refer them. This superb treatment of the subject by Floyd Upperman, full of detailed information and innovative ideas on how to use them [COT] effectively in trading, is the definitive treatment of the subject in my book. I highly recommend it."" -- Edward D. Dobson, PresidentTraders Press, Inc. ""The Commitment of Traders (COT) can be a very powerful trading tool to help anticipate market direction. But all too often it is misunderstood and/or misinterpreted . . . Floyd's unique analytical interpretations, combined with his trading tools and indicators, will open a door to greater profitability for all traders."" -- Walter Bressert, President Walter Bressert, Inc. 1 out of 5 stars Abysmal .......2007-03-15

This book sucks. From the title and description, it should have an in-depth analysis of the Commitments of Traders report from the CFTC. As a self-professed engineer with a love of statistics (page 20), Upperman should have a great vantagepoint. Unfortunately, his engineering and analyses have major flaws.

Upperman either ignores or doesn't understand that successful engineering depends completely on physics. Without well-tested explanative hypotheses that describe how things work, engineers find it very difficult to put things together to fulfill design specs. Upperman skips building a corpus of well-tested hypotheses, and jumps into data mining. Having found some patterns that look profitable (methodology unstated), he back-tests them over arbitrary time ranges, and (surprise!) finds that they look profitable.

"Being right or wrong isn't the goal, the goal is to make money." (page 124)

Without a working model of financial engineering, Upperman finds himself making money on trades that he can't explain, i.e. trading by gut. Further evidence of his muddled thinking lies in his broken conception of risk management, summarized by the dictum "never allocate more than 10% of capital to any one trade" (page 192). This ignores covariance between positions, i.e. being long equities in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, and Korea puts 50% of your equity at risk of being zeroed if something affects Asia (like the recent decline in equities).

Floyd Upperman and his editor, Kevin Commins, at John Wiley & Sons either do not know enough, or they knew better and published this text anyway simply because they guessed that enough people would be conned. Either way, they should be roundly censured.

1 out of 5 stars not very useful.......2006-12-28

Frustrating to read a book with the word "proprietary" for every interesting item.
Aside from all these great secrets the author won't tell you, the book is very general. Maybe useful for beginners in futures?...otherwise, very disappointing.

                  5 out of 5 stars Good job!.......2006-11-11

Based on true experience an market research I think this is a must for commodity traders.

5 out of 5 stars Beware of superbookdeals seller.......2006-06-19

If you want to buy the book, go ahead, just be careful of superbookdeals, they take your money but don't deliver and don't answer emails. Caveat Emptor.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on commodities.......2006-05-05

When people find out I've made money in stocks they always want a tip on the next hot stock. But as someone said, investing is all about knowing WHAT to buy, HOW MUCH to buy, WHEN to buy, and WHEN to sell (win or lose). Simply telling somebody WHAT to buy (if I even know) in no way gives them the learned skill and experience to answer those other questions (HOW MUCH, WHEN to get in and WHEN to get out). Giving a 10-year old the keys to the car doesn't make him a driver. So I don't give stock tips.

I've got a shelf full of books on commodities, including all the classics and lots of ones by Larry Williams. I've read and studied on commodities for at least 10 years and have taken Williams' seminars. And I've got high-powered charting software. Nonetheless, despite being successful trading stocks, I could never reach a comfort level where I felt confidant enough to get into trading commodities. Until I came across this book.

Upperman answers those questions of WHAT, HOW MUCH and WHEN better than anything else I've come across.

I think the book and his service are well worth it. Upperman doesn't sugarcoat it (successful trading requires a lot of study and work), but I think he's a natural teacher and I understand stuff from his work that I never got from the bookshelf. The sense I have is that Upperman is very passionate about what he does, very open to feedback on his website, [...], and very allergic to BS. He's sort of like a good surfing coach giving you pointers on how to catch the next big wave and what to do to avoid wiping out. Most of all it's clear he's constantly thinking about this stuff and is open to new ideas. I'm sorry some of the other reviewers were disappointed, but I found the book a revelation on rational commodity trading. My advice is buy the book and check out the website.
