From Leger ,Davis was re-inforced to the importance of drawing. When Davis said drawing I think he meant design. After learning the traditional academic drawing ,he used mechanical drawing to develope his paintings. This book offers ample illustration and text to show the working methods of this important American.

5 out of 5 stars La Foce: A Garden and Landscape in Tuscany.......2005-05-15

This is an excellent book. It bodes one well to have read Iris Origo's autobiography to help understand much of the background of La Foce, although Benedetta Origo does an excellent job of providing background, too. The combination of the estate's background, color photographs and sketches by the authors makes this book an excellent buy, especially if one is interested in Italian gardens and their development. Maps, too, have been included to give one a sense of location. Beautifully done.

5 out of 5 stars A Garden In All Its Glory.......2001-11-19

La Foce is an attractive Tuscan villa which is presented here in text and pictures. The text offers a picture of one family's history, including interesting archival photographs and drawings. What makes this book truly spectacular, however, are Morna Livingston's photographs, presented in a beautiful layout and printed on a silky white paper which heightens the luminesence of the incredible Tuscan colors. In more than one hundred photographs Livingiston captures the villa's gardens in every light and season. There are stunning images of the broader landscape and fascinating details of both the architecture and the plants. For those who have wondered just what the attraction of Tuscany is, you will find the answer here. For those who already know, this will serve as a reminder.

    Book Description

In this sharp-witted romantic comedy about the clash of the classes (of all kinds), a poor girl at a rich kids' school ends up working at the school's toniest club-and gets mistaken for a boy!

In this high anticipated title, a kind of cross between HANA-KIMI and BOYS OVER FLOWERS, Haruhi is a scholarship student at an exclusive private school: Ouran High School, where it turns out the bespectacled, short-haired Haruhi is the only student from a lower-middle class family in attendance!

Then, to make matters worse, one day she breaks an $80,000 vase that belongs to one of the campus clubs-a mysterious outfit called the "Host Club," consisting of six superrich (and gorgeous) guys. Haruhi can't afford to pay back the cost of the vase, of course, so she's forced to work for the Host Club! And it's there that she discovers just how rich all the boys are and how different the rich are from you and me...And meanwhile, the eccentric but good-hearted rich boys are shocked to find out how life is on the other side...

    5 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining.......2007-09-26

After watching the anime version of this I just had to check out the manga. They follow very closely but the slight differences is what make them both worth watching/reading. This particular volume was very entertaining which I recommend to anyone who enjoys a lighthearted read and of course comedy.

5 out of 5 stars More Ouran Goodness!.......2007-09-16

The Ouran High School Host Club manga, I'm pleased to say, is as wonderful and laugh-out-loud funny as the anime. I'm eagerly collecting the volumes as they are published in English now, and though some storyline details have been changed slightly, I recognize plot lines that were used in anime episodes that I have watched. I love this series. <3 If you like comedy and parodies of cliches and you haven't tried this already, you should!

5 out of 5 stars An easy 5 stars ^^........2007-08-08

I admit, I had my hesitations when my friend first asked me to watch the anime version of Ouran High School Host Club--but after seeing just 10 minutes of it, I was hooked!
Next time I took a trip to the local bookstore, I grabbed the first two volumes of the manga, and eagerly devoured them in one sitting.

I'm not a serious manga/anime fan, but Ouran just might convince me otherwise It's absolutely hilarious--it makes me laugh every time I read it :). The plotlines are pleasantly silly, but there are a few serious moments--these are sometimes brought back to earth with a gag, but are still believable. The characters are all fantastic; so much so that I have a really hard time deciding who's my favorite, and the books are so dense that they last a long time, and can be re-read--and you'll always find one little gag that you missed, or something you didn't notice.
A couple of people have complained about the layouts and artwork, but I got used to these very quickly, and now actually prefer Hatori's artwork to the other styles I've seen.

Overall, a brilliant and thoroughly enjoyable series.

4 out of 5 stars Ouran high school host club .......2007-07-20

if you don't understand the culture of the host clubs this book my take some getting use to. the main idia of a host club is to ditract from the real world. it plays on girls (or boys) love of fanticy even if it has no conection to the real world.

this book is a litterary host club. it is full of outrageus people, imposible stuations, and a slightly loopy of the exseptionaly rich.

the story follows the commpleetly down to eath Hirohi. Hirohi is a poor scholorship studant who doesn't even resister on the social radar of her new shcool. Ouran is full of the discustingly rich. many of the students have been engaed since preschool. briking into even the mainstream is impossible.

Then Hirohi, who looks like a boy due to stainded of resorces and a stiky incounter with gum, enters the host club while looking for a place to study (studying being her main love) and nocks into an expencive vase. to pay off her debts she is blackmailed into working in the host club. it takes a while for everyone to discover her gender. though she seems to be exploted by the host club she is suddenly part of the most eleit soicety of the msot elite school. from that vatage point she obsever skeaming twins, the worlds biggest flirt, a cake loveing lolitta (alian?) and hsi protector and well as the most greedy evil mastermind ever to flit with girls.

    5 out of 5 stars A Few Minor Points.......2007-06-26

First, the proper term is "reverse harem". Second, Haruhi ends up working for the Host Club as a host, because they think she's a guy. Wen they do find out that she's a girl, she still gets to work as a host. The entire series is a charming romantic comedy with some very touching moments.

          5 out of 5 stars A complete comic delight.......2001-06-30

While working towards his amazing film of "Hamlet," Kenneth Branagh plus several of his close friends and colleagues took a little time off for a lighthearted "take" on actors playing Hamlet. This film knocked my socks off. If you've ever been an actor, it's true to the bone of the experience, but with such a gentle, hilarious, gay grotesquerie that it's probably one of my favorite works of Branagh's, and surely the most unexpected. No one I've ever met doesn't love this little gem about a bunch of out-of-work actors with dreams of really "doing" Hamlet and getting their lives together - putting the Great Dane together with shoestring, gum, and very little else but heart. Highly recommended. The entire cast is stellar.

4 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking book for pianists and those who love them.......2002-01-18

It was a pleasure to read this book for its refreshing and unhackneyed investigation of the special world of virtuosi. The interspersal of autobiographical material reminds the reader that all responses to music and musicians are individual and personal. We react both to the experience of the music and to our relationship (real or imagined) with the performer. Of course sex is a part of that - why else has Tom Cruise spent a fortune in lawyers' fees recently defending himself of charges of being homosexual? As I read the book, it is neither a scientific analysis of the phenomenon of virtuosity, nor a psychological one, but the written musings of an author who has obviously spent a lifetime researching these artists, attending their concerts, reading their biographies, listening to their recordings, and who then shoots us, the readers, stream-of-consciousness fashion into their world with all its many facets. Although this scatter-gun approach is sometimes dizzying, it is also exhilirating at times. The author's biases cause us to pay heed to the pianists' motivations, drives, training, sexuality, musical priorities and repertory choices, and then presents us with the major question of the book - is music better served by the pianist who has dedicated himself to becoming a superlative and electrifying performer, or by the pianist who has sought to minimize his own personality's contribution to the performance in an effort to reveal the composer's intent? This is a central question in the world of classical piano today, and at least this book's author is not scared of proclaiming his opinion unequivocably.

4 out of 5 stars The Ebb Tide of Critical Discourse; In Mitchell's Defense.......2002-01-17

I have grave reservations about the amazon rating system, not because it's so democratic but because like it or not it's for all intents and purposes anonymous. ... Since part of Mitchell's premise is that being gay is necessarily a component of personality, and personality is vital to an artist's performance or mode of expression, it only stands to reason that virtuoso playing should involve a personal aesthetic. It is a very personality-driven and paradoxically private public endeavor, rather like the "private language" (as Edmund Wilson describes it in AXEL'S CASTLE) of the Symbolist poetry being written throughout much of the period Mitchell is describing. This book is attempting to elucidate and describe a phenomenon in an area where very often little is known of the performers' private lives, since artists such as musicians and composers have always relied heavily on the graces and approval of patrons. (I'm talking about a time before an era saturated with mass media--when people can choose to come out either as a sincere gesture of solidarity, or as a savvy, provocative career move, flouting the conventions to get a rise out of sales.) A patron--a bishop or prince, an industrialist's wife--was someone you didn't want to risk offending. No wonder Proust was taken until quite recently by critics--in France included--as the same heterosexual cocksman as his narrator Marcel. Proust avoided alienating his readers, 90% of whom were straight and wouldn't have "gotten it" if Proust had written 3000+ pages of narrative filtered through the point of view of a gay man.

Part of what Mitchell is pointing out is that despite plenty of evidence pointing to the fact that a horde of top-flight artists in all fields have been gay, in music--particularly piano pieces without lyrics (the very form Mitchell is concerned with)--we have, paradoxically, the most abstract and elusive medium, in which a "private language" (like Rimbaud's quizzically visionary abstractions) must carry the full weight of artistic expression. These can only be supported by currents drawn or springing from the artist's personal reserves of experience and interpretation. The fact that the artist might be in love or have in store a hot date later that same night would certainly be relevant to a piece driven by the private language of passion.

... What Mitchell is trying to do is decode the transpositions of what we've always presumptuously held to be universal back into the private particulars. In doing so, he must of course presume, but keep in mind that he's also swimming against the currents of centuries of culturally sprung presumptions.

5 out of 5 stars Stimulating and, better yet, fun.......2002-01-16

I found this book thoroughly fascinating--not merely a detailed consideration of specific piano virtuosi, but a philosophically complex meditation on how we, as human beings, cope with the phenomenon of genius. As its title suggests, Mitchell's book is above all a defense of virtuosi against charges that they are demonic, super- or sub-human, and his enthusiasm and passion for his subject is contagious. The alternation of personal essays with investigations into such issues as historical performance, the experience of women pianists, and the virtuoso in literature gives the book a quality of personality that I found distinctly refreshing, while the discussion of the connection between (homo)sexuality and pianism, which other readers found annoying, I thought brave, astute and powerful.

All in all, in a superb book.

          2 out of 5 stars Self-Indulgent, Irritating, Trivial........2002-01-04

This book is not about Great Pianists per se, but rather a sort of vague, academic essay on the philosophical concept of virtuosity itself. ... the reader should be warned that a large proportion of the book is concerned with the homosexuality of various pianists, and in discussing the 'possibility of a homosexual aesthetic of virtuosity', which I found to be both irritating and irrelevant. I have nothing against homosexuality, it's just that I consider it irrelevant to the art of the virtuoso, and I didn't buy the book in order to read about this.
The book contains virtually no proper information about the virtuosity of the great pianists, which was disappointing, as there are many interesting things that can be said of the precociousness and virtuosity of Argerich, Horowitz, Hofmann, Kissin, Bolet, Arrau et al, not to mention the life of the eccentric Ervin Nyiregyhazi.
The book is also a very fragmented work. There are chapters relating the (homo)sexuality of various pianists to the interior decor of their homes and to how they play the piano, near to a chapter about the piano stools used by the great pianists, all of which I consider utterly trivial and irrelevant. Also, at 173 pages, the book is (perhaps mercifully) very short.
I find this book hard to recommend to anybody except perhaps the piano enthusiast who has already read a number of books about the subject and is looking for something a bit different.
For those who want to read a book about the piano greats past and present, I can thoroughly recommend Harold Schonberg's classic book 'The Great Pianists'. ....

          2 out of 5 stars Decidedly Disappointing.......2001-10-18

I can't remember being so disappointed in, well, *any* book, at least in a very long time. "Disappointed" was a deliberate word choice, as Mitchell writes quite well and, in my opinion, has excellent taste in what makes which pianists great (for example, he rightly -- again in my opinion -- claims that, in Beethoven at least, it is Pollini, not Brendel and the like, who is the true intellectual... and he LOVES Argerich, as well as Rubinstein and Pogorelich. Anyone who 'gets' the greatness of artists as diametrically opposed in nearly every way as Pogorelich and Rubinstein, while realizing the treacly preachiness of Brendel, knows what's what.) But the book concerns itself more with the author's subjective responses to concerts he's attended and autobiographical events than with pianism, or virtuosity, in general, and screams out for the patient pen of a (Teutonic?) editor. The book is SO over the top with irrelevant snippets that it's literally maddening to read. There is no 'linearity' to it: each chapter is like a little cloud of anecdote. The photos in the middle bear very little relation to anything I could find in the text (A photo of the late, great Hazel Harrison and six-year-old wunderkind Adelina Germain? Interesting, yes, BUT WHY? There is no sustained discussion of either in the text, merely a mention here and there.)

What was especially galling was the CONSTANT AND RIDICULOUS non sequiturs.... It's fair to say that the book is more than a bit concerned with the topic and some of its observations, even if true, have no place in what purports to be an objective study of any phenomenon. And the 'dish' factor is through the roof: I've NEVER read a book on a musical topic so brimming with unadulterated gossip.

While I appreciate titillating details as much as the next person, it's disconcerting, AGAIN AND AGAIN, to be reading a passage discussing a particular performance style, and then confront several paragraphs of polemical invective, gossip, or both regarding someone's bedroom activities. An amazing example is Pachmann, supposedly a sterling example of "the flamboyant homosexual", who managed to be married and have two children. Of course, what he WAS was gay; the notion that he was simply open to experimentation, or was prone to casual affairs, gets no airing. And besides: WHO CARES? It's really galling to think that someone could have conducted their lives with a patina of privacy and it gets dug up for utterly dubious reasons. Oh, wait: NOT dubious, but to increase sales.

I approached this book with high hopes, and did manage to learn some new things from it. But MAN, its editor needs to find a new line of work. [I apologize if this appears to be in any way antagonistic to particular erotic (a word in the book's title) orientations. It is most fervently NOT that that I object to, but its remarkably non-systematic deployment in such a study. The book, in the end, is about its author, who -- and perhaps this is the saddest part -- is a terrific writer with fine taste who *could* have produced something of far greater value.]

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful reference.......2007-01-29

I am very pleased with this book. I was placed in charge of writing an employee handbook for a small office and this book (and accompanying CD-ROM) made my job very easy. The CD-ROM allows you to easily cut and paste most of the general verbage of the handbook - and customize to your needs. It is also very helpful in educating on laws. I highly recommend this for anyone taking on the task of creating an employee handbook.

I used the book for a class and found it full of a lot of helpful and useful information.

This is a complete kit for making your company's own employee handbook. There is legal information, state specific information, resources to follow for your specific needs, and then, the best part of all, there is CD that comes with this that has everything you need already typed for you. All you have to do is insert the CD and save the files, which are in MS Word, and voila - you have it. The only thing you have to do is decide which policies you want for your company, fill in a few blanks, change the TOC and you are ready to print it out! A very practical and easy way to create your own employee handbook! I was quite impressed.

When my boss asked me to write an employee handbook I freaked. I had no idea where to start. This book gave me everything I needed to get what my boss wanted. Everyone was happy. This is the book you need.
