Book Description
In 1935 the renowned photographer Berenice Abbott set out on a five-year, WPA-funded project to document New York's transformation from a nineteenth-century city into a modern metropolis of towering skyscrapers. The result was the landmark publication Changing New York, a milestone in the history of photography that stands as an indispensable record of the Depression-era city.
More than sixty years later, New York is an even denser city of steel-and-glass and restless energy. Guided by Abbott's voice and vision, New York photographer Douglas Levere has revisited the sites of 100 of Abbott's photographs, meticulously duplicating her compositions with exacting detail; each shot is taken at the same time of day, at the same time of year, and with the same type of camera. New York Changing pairs Levere's and Abbott's images, resulting in a remarkable commentary on the evolution of a metropolis known for constantly reinventing itself.

New York Changing.......2007-01-12
This is a beautiful book. Perfect for anyone who loves new york city.
Of passing interest.......2006-12-23
I'm fascinated by "then and now" picture compilations. That said, this book does have some really good examples of the genre, however they are surrounded by much less interesting and really unimportant locations throughout NYC. It's a mix. If you like to see how a great city changes, this will have some utility. As a former native New Yorker, I found enough to make me glad I'd bought it but not enough to delight me.
Double take.......2006-07-10
Then and now photobooks of American cities are steady bookshop sellers but it is not until you turn over the pages of 'New York Changing' that you'll realise that this is how it should be done. Douglas Levere, with help from Berenice Abbott, has created a brilliant photo record of the world's premier city.
To start with Abbott created the perfect architectural record with the 1935 to 1939 WPA sponsored project when she shot just over three hundred photos of the city (you can see two hundred of these in 'Berenice Abbott: Changing New York', ISBN 1565845560) and Levere has retaken over a hundred of these with eighty-one appearing in his book.
Unlike other inferior books of the genre Levere has taken the utmost care with his project. Not only using the same type of camera and lens as Abbott but waiting until the same season and time of day to freeze the moment six decades later. A fascinating page of technical details at the back of the book explains more. The eighty-one photos are divided into four chapters with the majority taken in Manhattan. On each spread Abbott's photo is on the left and Levere's opposite, Bonnie Yochelson writes a straightforward caption for all of the images.
With the help of 200dpi printing, quality paper and elegant design these photos (and the book) look just stunning. The perfect photobook!

A Before and After Look at New York.......2006-03-30
In the middle of the depression Berenice Abbott began a five year, WPA funded project to document in photographs New York's transformation from the 19th century to the modern metropolis of skyscrapers. The result was published as 'Changing New York.'
Sixty years later Douglas Levere went back to the same sites of 100 of Abbotts photographs and took another picture with the same angle, the same view, and usually even the same time of day (to get the same sun angle) of the same scene.
The result is this book, 'New York Changing' which shows these pictures arranged next to each other. That way, the only differrence between the pictures is the changes that have come about in the basic structure of the city.
This is a beautiful coffee table book, except that seeing one set of pictures makes you want to turn to the next set, and you've soon gone through the whole book.
Highly recommended.
A Real Treat.......2005-11-12
Fascinating book! Berenice Abbott's photographs from the 30's alongside present-day photos of the same locations shot by Douglas Levere. A great way to experience the layers of history in New York.

Walt Kelly's comedic genius never more evident than here........2007-08-08
I first found this book as a child out in the garage bookcases in my family home where I found the art, the animals, and the entire world inside amazing. As I grew older I began to understand the wit and wisdom on a deeper and deeper level until I became an adult and the entire book had a completely differen intelectual effect on me than it had as a child.
But the pictures are still pretty too look at and the animal are still just as cute, hehe.
I may have read this as many as 30 times, but it never gets old, and, as testement to the genius of Kelly, it never seems old-fashioned or out-dated!

This book was Wonderful.......2003-10-18
I read through this book before giving it to my cousin and pointed out some of the very important area. The book was very interesting, innovative and to the point. I think it is a very important tool to a venturing christian freshman student. The scriptures were appropriately placed to make the biggest impact. It's simply wonderful.
A good start for graduates.......2000-05-19
Over all I thought the book was well written. Gives advice using the bible as reference. Covers topics that a graduate will have to face in their journey forward.
Book Description
In 1978 we knew him as a superhero. Soaring through the air, he seemed to embody the strength, courage, and virtue of the Man of Steel. In 1995, paralyzed from a riding accident and unable to breath without a ventilator, actor Christopher Reeve became a different kind of hero--a real one of flesh and blood, who bravely faced the most devastating kind of setback, and who ultimately became a role model for anyone who has ever wanted to give up in the face of hardship. In Superhero we see a man who has been driven from day one, driven to succeed academically, athletically, professionally, and after his accident, even more determined-to walk again, to help others in need, and to prove that the soul and spirit can soar, even when the body can barely move.
Customer Reviews:
...Disappointing.......2000-07-11
Christopher Reeve's acting career alone is probably not interesting enough to sell books. It was his determination to recover from his crippling riding accident that inspired me to listen to the audio version of Superhero: Ahe Biography of Christopher Reeve, by Chris Nickson.
Other than his rise to stardom at an early age with Superman, and his tragic accident, there is nothing much to say. This becomes evident when the author runs out of words and starts using the same phrases over and over again. By the middle of the book I was annoyed and tired of listening to it. It left me feeling that Christopher Reeve was a well to do, preppy actor who made it big, then squandered his stardom and made excuses for his otherwise mediocre acting career.
Sadly enough, it takes his paralyzing riding accident to pick up the pace of the book and make it interesting enough to finish. His life after the fall is certainly more notable and the book depicts a couple of really moving moments.
Perhaps in another 20 years his life will have expanded enough to make a really worthwhile book. My opinion is they should have waited until then to write this one.

Book Description
Between 1873 and 1935, reformers in Chicago used the power of music to unify the diverse peoples of the metropolis. These musical progressives emphasized the capacity of music to transcend differences among various groups. Sounds of Reform looks at the history of efforts to propagate this vision and the resulting encounters between activists and ethnic, immigrant, and working-class residents.
Musical progressives sponsored free concerts and music lessons at neighborhood parks and settlement houses, organized music festivals and neighborhood dances, and used the radio waves as part of an unprecedented effort to advance civic engagement. European classical music, ragtime, jazz, and popular American song all figured into the musical progressives' mission.
For residents with ideas about music as a tool of self-determination, musical progressivism could be problematic as well as empowering. The resulting struggles and negotiations between reformers and residents transformed the public culture of Chicago. Through his innovative examination of the role of music in the history of progressivism, Derek Vaillant offers a new perspective on the cultural politics of music and American society.
Book Description
A colorful square, dissected into four parts, with hinges marked in black. If you leave the blue piece fixed and swing the others around their hinges, a new shape will emerge. Can you guess just by looking what it will be? This is just one of the tricky geometrical gems that will make a puzzler’s mind work overtime. Try drawing a set of variously shaped polygons using only a compass and a ruler (no measuring allowed!), figuring out which of two sculptures is bigger (logic alone won’t give you the answer), and lots more.

Put on your thinking cap and get to work........2005-04-26
A great new book by one of the masters of Recreational Mathematics and Puzzles. This book will give hours of fun to puzzlers of all abilities and intrests.
Just to get warmed up,Ivan shows us how to construct triangles, squares, pentagons, pentagrams, hexagons, heptagons, hexagrams, octagons, heptagons, octagrams and nonagons ,all with only a compass and a straight edge.
Then he reminds us of something we've known since childhood;that no two snowflakes are alike. He shows 5 designs and tells us about Bentley (1865-1931),who was the first to photograph one in 1885,and went on to photograph over 5000 in his lifetime, finding no two alike. When you try to imagine all the snowflakes that ever were or ever will be,all hexagonal but different;and you start to see what infinity means. And you thought that the number of flakes last winter was a large number. It's impossible to imagine all those designs and then denying a Supreme Creator.
He also covers the Fibonacci series:
1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,...where each new number is the sum of the previous two in the series.By dividing a number by the one that preceeds it,you'll get 1.61538 and that the Golden Ratio phi of 0.618 and how closely related they are.
He also rounds out this selection of puzzles with several other games involving circles, blocks, paths, hidden images, matchsticks, depth perception, mazes etc.
The Hinged Square of Henry Dudeney,Miquel's Theorem and the Six Circles Theorem show the fun and fascination with Recreational Mathematics.
A great book for the amateur or seasoned puzzler.
Also a book that should not be overlooked by one who likes to construct puzzles or games.
I don't often comment on other reviews, but the Geek, his words not mine, that scoffed at the book was way off base. The next time his mother buys him something ,maybe a bottle of vinegar would be more suitable to such a sourpuss. This guy gives Geeks a bad image.
I've got a few more puzzle books by Moscovich that I can't wait to dig into. The big gem he put out called 1000 Play Thinks,in my humble opinion ,is unmatched.See my review dated March 9,2002 and November 15,2003.
Tired Rehash Of Several Uninteresting Concepts.......2005-02-11
This is the first product I have felt compelled to review at Amazon, because this book was so unsatisfying. First of all, the color scheme is garish, and not in a good way. Then there's the matter of content. Despite the title, there are very few puzzles in this book. I'm not even sure how to categorize what is in the book - compass and straightedge construction problems? Optical illusions? Map coloring and Hamiltonian circuit problems? I am a pretty big geek, but none of this stuff even remotely interested me. Graph paper racing games? Some sort of simulated soccer game? Other "games" that are too boring or complicated to even imagine playing? It was almost painful just to read the book, never mind trying to solve the inane problems.
My advice: get anything - ANYTHING - written by Martin Gardner before you even think of touching this book. My copy (which I got as a gift) is going straight into the trash. I wouldn't inflict this book on anyone else. (Sorry Mom - but I appreciate the thought, and that's what counts.)
ok puzzles dressed up in pretty graphics.......2005-01-02
I've bought several books from this new series of puzzle books from Ivan. They are very well presented with colorfull graphics and good background info on the origin of many problems.
However there just isn't enough original puzzles in these books for me to recommend them whole-heartedly. So I'd say these books are meant for the puzzle novice or for high school students.
Get your puzzle solving skills in shape.......2004-12-06
Did you know that every snowflake has six reflectional and six rotational symmetries? So says Ivan Moscovich, the designer of these puzzles and games which provide a learning experience that he calls "recreational mathematics." This collection of puzzles and games contains examples of many forms of symmetry. You will also encounter shape transformation puzzles such as the classic hinged square puzzle of the title, along with problems based on mosaics, directions and dimensions, and matchsticks.
Interspersed among the puzzles in this collection are fascinating facts about such things as phi (the golden ratio), patterns, and how to draw polygons using only a compass and a straightedge. The answer pages provide not only solutions, but also explanations for the answers that incorporate simple principles of mathematics. These puzzles are not just challenging and educational, but they are also a visual treat, since each puzzle has one or more colorful and eye-pleasing illustrations. Some of these puzzles will require a lot of thought, but that makes discovering the solution all the more rewarding. Give your brain a good workout!

Quick and easy read, lots of valuable tips.......2007-08-31
This book is succinct and easy to reference. I have 20+ years customer service experience and WOULD recommend this book to anyone who is open-minded to trying new tools and techniques. If you are having trouble with customers, change your approach. This book will help you do just that.
What the world needs now is more customer service!
Short, practical, concise help for dealing with customers.......2005-04-28
The book begins with a section outlining some sixty specific customer service techniques, and describes each of them. Some are very basic, and some are more advanced, particularly those that deal with dealing with angry customers, or preventing problems with customers from escalating and becoming time consuming.
But that's not the meat of the book, or what makes the book so useful. The rest of the book contains about sixty vignettes or dialogues between customers and staff, showing how the various situations SHOULD be handled. Each vignette is short, and to the point and the information for each one can be assimilated and learned from in a very few minutes.
I like this book because it can be used in so many ways. You can sit and read it through. You can browse it and just read the parts that you want help with. You can read one or two vignettes, and learn one or two skills a day, since each segment really stands on its own. It's a great source book to use in customer service training, because it's all there -- techniques, and how to use them.
It's low priced. It's quick to learn from. And it's real. Most of the vignettes struck home with me. I bet I've had most of these situations.
If there's a better, faster book to learn how to deal with customers (especially the difficult customers), I haven't found it yet.
Lots of Bad Advice!!!! An Awful Book :( .......2005-04-21
I've been in the customer service field for 15 years, and this is, hands down, the worst customer service book I've ever read! The techniques listed are truly awful. In every situation I put myself in the customer's position and if the person helping me followed these techniques - I would quickly become an angry customer or insulted and never visit that establishment again. The author lists the exact wrong things to do to provide good customer service, yet he presents them as good techniques and the right thing to do. Awful! I think Mr. Bascal didn't pay attention to the title of his book - it is NOT entitled "Perfect Ways to Enrage Your Customers."
The first part of the book the author labors on and on about how "allegedly" great his book is and then proceeds to take 15 pages to explain the set up of his book - which could be done in two or three sentences. He then outlines his very bad techniques in the second section, and the third section he gives examples of how to put these outrageous techniques in to action.
Whatever you do, do NOT buy this book. And most importantly, do not let your employees read this book!!! I would hate to see anyone putting these stupid and customer enraging/insulting tecniques in to practice.
