Great way to introduce Escher to children.......2000-12-31

This puzzle book should be on every child's bookshelf. The chosen pictures are a great selection of Escher's work. The book is sturdy and the idea to create room for the puzzlepieces to be stored inside is marvelous. It is a great way to introduce Art to children and I hope to see more books of the same kind.

Beautiful designs.......2000-05-21

The pictures in this book are a huge source of inspiration. The clear, black and white illustrations lend themselves well to be photocopied. I love the fact that the pictures are free to reproduce. One of the designs was so pretty that I now have a tattoo of it. Now if that's not appreciation of the design, I don't know what is.

The real reality book.......2007-07-28

Judith Viorst speaks the thoughts of a young person so truthfully that my children/grandchildren just love Alexander books. Our seven year old granddaughter just moved to a new neighborhood, new school, new everything. I sent this book to her and she wrote me a thank you note telling me how much she loves Alexander because he knew how she felt. She said, "he was really mad" and it helped her realize it was normal for her to have those angry feelings, too. But, he settles in and so has she. Kids need to know that negative feelings are normal under some situations. Judith V's books are humorous and the lessons they teach are subjects kids relate to, but she doesn't preach. She just brings out another side to look at.

Nicely written and my five year old who DID NOT want to move thoroughly enjoys it. As a parent I was kind of looking for a happy ending, but it was only alluded to and I'm not sure my daughter actually understood the happy ending. At least, I'm not going to buy her a dog just because we moved.

Judith Viorst comes up with another great Alexander story.......2004-09-14

"Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" is an absolute classic of children's literature, even if I have heard Judith Viorst's story done way too often at speech tournaments. The idea of feeling so mad or sad that you want to move to Australia remains one of the great punch lines. In "Alexander's Not (Do You Hear Me? I Mean It!) Going to Move" she comes up with a story almost as good. Alexander might talk about moving to Australia, but when his mom and dad tell him that the family is moving to a new home a thousand miles away he decides that he is not going to move. He is not even going to pack.

His father might have a new job a thousand miles away and there might be a new house a thousand miles away but Alexander does not care. Right next door to the new house there might be a boy who is the same age of his brother Anthony and down the street there might be a boy the same age as his brother Nick, but Alexander figures that there is probably nobody for a thousand miles who is his age. He will never have a best friend like Paul again or a great sitter like Rachel. Alexander has a long, long list of favorite friends and special places that he will never have again if he moves. Therefore, he is not packing. Never. Not going to happen.

"Alexander's Not (Do You Hear Me? I Mean It!) Going to Move" is illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser, who pointedly does so in the style of Ray Cruz, who first illustrated Alexander in print and who was unable to complete the work on this endeavor. This book might come in second to the original tale, but for any kid who has to deal with the trauma of moving (as an Air Force Brat my family moved a half-dozen times when I was growing up) this story will ring true and help put things in perspective. Final Note: I was surprised to read that Judith Viorst has three sons named Anthony, Nicholas, and Alexander. This must have made for an interesting household. I wonder what happened to Alexander when he grew up. Maybe he moved to Australia.

Do you hear me?.......2002-04-28

This is a continuation of the Alexander books. We should all have read about his terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day already. I also use this book in my classroom and have found that while the kids do like to hear another story about this adorable little boy, this story just doesn't click with them. The success of Alexander's other stories came from the way kids were able to relate to his situation. This book just doesn't have that.

What it does have though is a wonderfully planned out story and some good imitations of Ray Cruz's original depictions of Alexander. Again, things just aren't going Alexander's way and his imagination begins to spin ways he can keep from moving with his family. He learns his brothers and parents are much more understanding of his situation than he first thought however.

Why 4 stars?:
This book still deserves a place in your library, however it can't compare to the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Still, children will enjoy hearing another story about Alexander and if any of them have moved or are moving, they will get even something more out of this cute story.

Alexander is definately moving...off the charts!.......2001-06-27

Alexander, Who's Not (Do you hear me? I mean it!) Going to move by Judith Viorst is a great childrens book. It is wonderfully illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser. The storyline is realistic and approaches a subject in a creative style. It is attractive to young readers and manages to shed light on Alexander's negative feelings towards moving. Alexander ends up happy and so will the reader.

This is a cute book for younger children. It must be used with care, though, if it is going to be used in a classroom. Teachers must be aware of how students might react to it. (Reading the book would make this more clear). Teahcers can, though, use this book for reciprocal questioning and a variety of activities. It is an adorable book (as are most of the "Alexander" books). I definitely recommend it!

Additional perspective on "Schindler's List.......1999-08-21

I just finished reading this in less than a week! I loved this book. As a collector of books on this movie it is by far the best one I have found. I especially loved the color photo inset. I will watch the movie again this weekend to see the author playing a German clerk in the railway siding luggage scene where he asks everone to "clearly label your luggage and it will follow you." I never knew who played this part and how many "takes" it took to get the scene correct. I also never knew Spielberg was referred to as "the master" by his cast and crew. This book gives one many interesting little details about the making of the movie. Ones that really enjoys the movie MUST read this book. It's a must!

There are stories and history behind the scene........1998-11-20

If you expect information about the "technical making" of this movie, you won't get much. If you search for true stories, heartwarming stories sometimes told by real characters behind the scene, you'll get more than you expect. At some points, it was hard for me to go forward without tears. For those who watched the movie, it does add much.

For any music lover, the theme of love transcending all is not a new one. But beyond the phrases of contemporary pop songs, here is an in-depth story of how one musician first found love in his music, and then the true love of his life in another artist. In music, a coda is "a concluding musical section that is formally distinct from the main structure". That's exactly what this book has here. Beyond the physical, that is, metaphysically speaking, what is it that drives us? What is it that makes a musician so soulful? What is it that drives our creative processes? What is "in" us in life that disappears when the body dies? The most interesting part of this book was how the spiritual part of their love has truly transcended art and life. The power of love. And if you've felt that in your life, you will feel it again reading these pages. People you know and love will come to mind and you will be inspired! Inspired to create and inspired to love. If you haven't felt it, after reading this, you'll want to feel it.

If you love music, especially jazz, know anything about the music biz or maybe are a fan of John and Gloria, or are just a regular romantic looking for clues on finding your soul mate, I highly recommend this book. You'll laugh, cry, and smile reading it as I did. So keep a box of tissues handy. But, when you're done, you'll know there is more to love than greeting cards, roses, and silly love songs.

This book really impressed me, and I am in business 35 years in New York City. Politics is a necessary fact in business although many business people will deny this. Joel Deluca emphasizes this and takes the position that within the politics of organizations the ethical principles that drive individual behavior in large measure also drives the outcome. He very astutely identifies a range of personality types and then proceeds to illustrate how effective genuinely ethical business tactics are to advancing individual goals as well as those of the business.

This book should be required study for business school students. I have seen business to business relations go from a handshake is a deal to contracts, in many cases, are not good enough to insure compliance with agreements. Relations among co-workers within organizations, the focus of the book, has not faired better as people spend far more time protecting their job or complicating other's job, than advancing the collective interests of the enterprise. Ethics, in the current business climate are, for the most part, not much more than the expedient adjustments among conflicting interests and justice then becomes substantially in the interests of the strong. Political Savvy powerfully illustrates, with real world examples, that such an understanding of ethics in business is ultimately ineffectual and that unyielding ethical behavior is really the winning strategy.

Highly recommended to anyone interested in sustained advancement in a business career.

Good to Know - How to Use.......2005-09-22

Joel DeLuca's book on Political Savvy gave me pause for thought and reconsideration on the topic of organization politics. The book provides valuable insight into human behavior and suggestions on how to effectively harness it as a tool in your kit. While it all makes sense, and is good to know, the logistics of applying the knowledge in reality will prove challenging. Good stuff, worth the quick read.

A "Must Read" for Career Success.......2004-09-24

During the course of my career, I have worked in every size organization from the federal government to major corporations to small businesses - some of these with seemingly little politics and others as political as they come. No matter what size organization you are in, I would recommend that you put Political Savvy on your "must read" list. How often do workers, whether they are managers or worker bees, find themselves unable to move ahead because they are blocked by organization politics?
This book can make leaders and winners of almost everyone. Political Savvy has many practical ideas and tools to let all of us move through those politically sensitive situations without making our colleagues feel we've stepped on their toes. You don't have to be a "shark" to get ahead and there are ways of even using "shark repellent." The book is a great tool for making the impact you want and gaining career success. It's a quick read though you may want to read it again and again. Don't skip the beginning chapters because they explore some of the basic terms you will find invaluable once you get to the proven techniques used by the politically savvy.

I just finished the book and I learned a great deal from it. I found it a little hard to get through, which is probably a good indicator that I needed it. I am one of those who have always had a basic distaste for organizational politics.

But what I found here would have helped me immensely had I read it earlier. Very little in the book does not pass the common sense test, and much of it causes you to look at things in a way that not only removes the 'politics? Yuck' factor but makes you realize that organizational politics is really how things are done, so you better at least have a working knowledge of it.

I thought the organization of the book was among the best I have seen and thought the summary sections were excellent.

Anyone involved in the leadership aspect of the business world would do well to read Political Savvy. It provides a fruitful strategy for survival in a macrocosmic world of never ending change and chaos. These winds of change have created a frontier of challanges and work environments that, before this time, never existed. The practice of Political Savvy can really make a difference in the effectiveness of an organization. It's excellent reading for anyone serious about surviving in the corporate world.
