The Rhetoric of the Frame addresses the question of the frame in the visual arts and how it influences the way we perceive artworks. Challenging Kant’s characterisation of the frame as merely an external supplement, the fourteen essays in this anthology consider the frame to be an indispensable, if volatile, complement to the artwork. Inspired by Jacques Derrida’s ideas on parergonality, these essays problematise ‘inside/outside’ polarity, articulating difference without reifying the unstable relationship between the artwork and the frame. Ranging from a study of the English country house portrait to a reading of the AIDS quilt, and from a feminist perspective on pornography and performance art to sixteenth-century map-making, these essays collectively consider the frame in its material, conceptual, ideological, gendered, and poststructural aspects.

Irving Penn: A Career in Photography.......2005-08-19

Irving Penn: A Career in Photography is a book that examines the work and life of photographer Irving Penn. Several different writers and people associated with Penn have included text to describe their view of Penn and his life in photography. Colin Westerbeck, Issey Miyake, Martin Harrison, Edmund Carpenter, Rosamond Bernier, Colin Eisler, and Jennifer Jankauskas all contribute to the book. Writer and editor Colin Westerbeck invites the reader into the history of Irving Penn through a summary of Penn's life in his photo career. He begins with Penn's early fashion feature called "Flying Down to Lima" where after a case of airsickness, developed a new vision that changed his view of photography. Westerbeck also mentions Penn's different styles and renowned photo shoots including his many photos of various celebrities wedged into a narrow-angle corner he created out of theater flats, and also Penn's move to platinum prints. The remainder of the 200-page book comprises Penn's more famous photos. In total, there are 193 in the book, some which correspond to the text.
Irving Penn: A Career in Photography is an excellent book for anyone interested in photography, or even a professional looking for inspiration. Though it is a large book (approximately 10" by 12") its size is fitting for a photo book so that all the images can be easily seen and appreciated. The selection of photos is also suitable in that they are some of Penn's best and most known to the photo savvy, and are also mixed in genre. The text contributed by the aforementioned people help describe and reflect Penn's photos, and also show his many styles, techniques, and views on photography. Though these stories are informative to the reader, they can also get confusing and tough to read, as some of the writers tend to overuse unnecessary wording and phrasing. However, the excellent use of text/photo relationship in design and content work well in presentation, and contributes to an overall superb book.

Irving Penn: A Pioneer.......2005-08-18

One of the most significant photographers of the twentyith century, Irving Penn's captivating photographs throughout his career are wonderfully showcased in this book. From his humble beginnings as a graphic dsigner in the 1940's to his portraits of the native peoples from the far reaches of the world-Penn's work has had a major impact on not only the world of photography but aslo the art world as a whole. This retrospective of Penn's body of work is much more thorough than expected.
The graphic quality of his work really speaks to me as a graphic desiner; weather it be his rich photographs of nude women or his famous portraits of politicans, actors and fashion models. The numerous illustrations of Penn's well-known corner shot were a nice surprise in the book; many of these images are very difficult to find on the internet, it was great being able to study the nuances of the portraits up close. A beautiful and informative book that any Penn fan would love.

An awesome gift.......2006-04-01

From the moment I picked up this book I was laughing! I'm not a pilot but I work in the aviation world and I found myself relating to half the jokes as wise cracks my crew and I are always making about our job and our pilots. The characters are well developed and irresistable. Artistically the comics are well drawn with simple and clean lines.
I bought a couple copies for some hard-to-shop for family members and gave it as Christmas presents. It was a brilliant idea! I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ANY interaction with the aviation world.... you know who you are!

Chicken Wings.......2006-03-01

This is a light hearted look at the world of small airplane driving and the strange folks that inhabit that world. The sometimes dumb but lovable folks and their antics are easily identified with in the real world aviation community. Most pilots will know an ego-maniacal airplane driver like Chuck who pulls his foolish antics regularly.

Really enjoyed it! Even for a new pilot like me, the humor is relevant and the characterizations are familiar. It's fun to read over and over as my experience builds and provides new comprehension and appreciation of how funny these comic strips truly are!

Orkin provides a hysterical twist and satirical work on Canadian English. It promotes the glory of Canada and the foolishness of the U.S. As an American, I found it hysterical to be referred to as the "Hugh Ess!" A must read for both Canadians and Americans.

Excellent resource, easy to understand.......2007-10-05

I bought this book because I wanted to incorporate my single-person consulting company. It took me a few hours to read this book (some sections didn't apply, but I still wanted to review them), and I felt very confident I could incorporate without a lawyer. I followed the instructions for forming a C Corp in California and used the forms provided in the CD-Rom. I delivered my forms in person to the LA regional office. Within 2 weeks, I received confirmation that my articles had been filed with the SoS of CA -- all for under $250 including the cost of the book. This compares to almost $1500 that most lawyers quoted me. I recommend this book highly but recognize that the process may be more challenging if you have many shareholders.

excellent guidebook to corporation issues and how-to.......2006-08-10

I purchased this book as a research tool before incorporating my business as a California C corp without any outside assistance last year. This was all I needed and used.

I read the book cover-to-cover, which did not take more than about 6 hours, and I felt very comfortable with the entire process. Like most Nolo books, this has a very readable style, with plenty of important information organized in a sensible manner. Even though the topic may not be entertainment reading, Mancuso makes the process very reasonable and I can't imagine another book doing it meaningfully better than this.

This book hits its target audience very well - someone who wants to know about the practical and procedural issues related to incorporation. As part of the responsibility of operating a business, any incorporator needs to know most of what is covered in this book. Even if you get someone to do the filing, any incorporator needs to know this stuff. Don't worry - it's not rocket science.

For a broader understanding of business issues, I found Nolo's other titles to be similarly excellent (their guide to california business and their guide to business deductions). Both cover related but different and important areas for new business owners. Read all 3 and you'll be set for general business issues.

How to Form Your Own California Corporation (9th Ed).......2000-03-28

Good examples. Fairly comprehensive. Good discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of forming a California corporation. The Corporate Tax section has some good pointers. Good writing style! It flows. But the diskette has only a fraction of the business and corporation related forms compared to "Small Busines Kit for Dummies". Overall, I recommend this book for a new commer. Well worth the money.
