    Book Description

    arsenalpulp.com :

The Uncanny: Experiments in Cyborg Culture is a dazzling and provocative examination of the cyborg—the concept of man-as-machine—in popular culture. The book collects essays and images, in colour and black-and-white, presenting the image of the cyborg in all its imaginative guises. The title is from a 1919 essay by Sigmund Freud (and included in the book), which deals with the sensation of "uncanniness" as being strange and familiar at the same time.

The idea of the cyborg has been in existence for decades, and is one of the most persistent cultural images of the past century. The cyborg is a cypher—an enigmatic image of figure that is human but not human, a machine but not a machine. It exists at the intersection of science, technology, and culture. For some, the cyborg is evident in the massive presence of technology; we are constantly aided by machines, whether they are computers, vehicles, or military weapons that extend and amplify our presence in the natural world, or by medical prosthetics, such as pacemakers, artificial limbs, and eyeglasses, that maintain and reinforce our existing physical body.

How is one to understand the persistence of this image in the visual arts and popular culture, in science and literature, medicine and cultural theory? This book, in its essays and images, presents the cyborg as an "uncanny" image that reflects our shared fascination and dread of the machine and its presence in our daily lives.

The Uncanny complemented a major exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The book suggests a significant link between the visual arts and popular culture in the evolving representation of the cyborg, beginning as early is the 19th century.

A copublication with the Vancouver Art Gallery, The Uncanny is a thoughtful and beautifully presented examination of cyborg culture that will help to define our sense of self as we forge ahead into the uncertain future.

Essays by: Sigmund Freud ("The Uncanny"), William Gibson (an excerpt from "Neuromancer"), Donna Haraway ("A Manifesto For Cyborgs"), and Toshiya Ueno ("Japanimation and Techno-Orientalism").

Includes 32 full-color photographs and numerous black and white images.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Bond Book.......2007-05-22

I highly recommend this book. It gives thorough and strait-forward information on every aspect of fixed-income investment vehicles. This is a great way to learn about this market if one is new to it.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2004-10-10

As a former techie who found his way to the wonderful world of supporting a fixed income desk, I found this book to be an excellent overview of the bond market. The author explains complex concepts such as duration and yield in terms that anyone can understand. This is by far the best introductory book to the bond market I have read (and I have read many)!

    4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2004-06-30

In this very good beginner's guide to the bond market, author Michael V. Brandes addresses all of the fundamental questions clearly and concisely. Bond math can be daunting, but while the author includes a few equations for illustrative purposes, he clearly addresses his book to the general run of individual investors. The book, which has moments of surprising good humor, says right off the bat that bond investing can be dull in comparison to stock investing, not because the stakes are lower, but because the elements of personality and surprise are considerably more muted in the debt market than in the equity markets. We highly recommend this book, even though it is pedantic at times - a risk you take when you venture into the complex realm of bond investing.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book on Bonds.......2003-10-23

I read the Motley Fool Investment Guide and really liked it, so when I saw this at the bookstore with Tom Gardner's endorsement on it, I thought I'd give it a shot. Just like the Fools, this book is written for regular people and is pretty humorous (for an investment book!). The chapters are well organized so that you learn about bonds "step-by-step". It includes discussions about every type of bond and advice on how to put them into your
portfolio. It's definitely not written like a textbook -- even the complicated concepts come across clearly. In short, this is a great book. I found it easy to understand and, most importantly, full of extremely useful information.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome & Insightful.......2003-10-21

I was not expecting to gain this much insight on the topic of bonds and investing but am delighted to have picked this book up and savoured it to the last page in the course of one plane ride!
Adept, succinct without compromising depth, this young new author has really delivered on his promise to give us the "bare essentials" that anyone should know!

    Book Description

Multiple personalities hid inside of Lauren Stratford for years. Only now is she aware of them and their roles. She exposes how each was created to absorb the emotional and physical pain during her abuse. Plus she tells how the cult programmed her alters to perform tasks. Some were even programmed to punish Lauren if she exposed the cult -- including punishment as severe as suicide.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars She is a FAKE.......2007-04-25

For those of you who actually believe she went through all this, and think that anyone who speaks against her like she is some kind of saint, look for yourself, everything about her is unreal, she wrote another book claiming to be Raped, abused and forced into satanic rituals, then she claimed to be a concentration camp survivor. I understand that these books she has written may have touched a lot of people but there is no proof other than her own words, that she is who she claims to be.

1 out of 5 stars Guess she was still believing her own lies..........2006-05-21

Apparently, the late Laurel Wilson (a.k.a. Lauren Stratford, a.k.a. Laura Grabowski) wasn't satisfied w/fooling a willing public twice (first in "Satan's Underground", where her wildly untrue stories of SRA first came to light, and then again in "I Know You're Hurting", where she tries to offer counseling to actual victims), and decided to go for the trifecta...even if it were true, the book itself is poorly written and drawn out in many places.

Oh, and to the anonymous reviewer who attacked the very first one, I don't believe everything I hear (just look at my posts to the Media Matters for America forum, LOL), nor do I avoid questioning the government (considering the shape our country's in, how can I not?)...it seems to me like *you're* the one who's in denial by refusing to accept that Stratford wasn't who she said she was and had a history of lying about abuse. Why do you think her first book, the aforementioned "Satan's Underground", was later pulled by its original publisher? And how do you justify her later attempt to portray herself as a Holocaust survivor and accepting donations intended for REAL survivors?

As for the other anonymous reader, no one's denouncing her story because they don't want to believe it's true, they're doing so because it's NOT true...read the Cornerstone expose if you haven't already, or even her Wikipedia bio. Aaron, perhaps you'd like to check it out and see if you still think the negative reviewers like myself are "engaging in a deliberate misinformation campaign"...more importantly, can you tell me where anyone said anything about Willson/Stratford/Grabowski that wasn't true?

In short: Don't waste your money. Grieve for the late Ms. Stratford and how different things would be if her untreated psychological problems had been dealt with at an early age, but refrain from furthering the lies and outrageous claims that should be left to die along w/her unfortunate legacy.

    1 out of 5 stars A Sad Coda to a Tragic Life.......2004-04-30

One hates to speak ill of the dead. However, the late Ms. Stratford successively claimed to be a survivor of "Satanic ritual abuse", a survivor of the Holocaust, and someone with multiple personalities.

(In fact, some of the "ritual abuse" she discusses in the book "Satan's Underground" and some of the "concentration camp experiences" she related in appearances with pseudo-survivor Binyamin Wilkomirski "took place" simultaneously--it would be a remarkable feat for Satan himself to place his victim in Washington State and a Jewish children's detention center in Krakow, Poland at the same time!)

It's hard to separate the knowledge of Ms. Stratford's tragic delusions from a reading of her prose, which is incoherent and disorganized. The heartbreaking truth is that she would have been better served by psychological and spiritual counseling that brought her closer to reality than by gullible acceptance of her wild stories.

5 out of 5 stars THE ONLY FICTION HERE ARE THOSE IN DENIAL.......2003-07-01

    THE ABOVE REVIEW SAYS:

"Lauren Stratford has been investigated by a number of Evangelical ministries and has been shown to be a writer of fiction."

Yeah, and you are someone who blindly believes everything you hear, have others' beliefs for your own, never question the government...etc. You are what's wrong with this world---Sit in judgement, all the while being a foolish follower. You tell us not to believe everything we read---and yet, you believe these 'Evangelical ministries' that 'proved' her story to be 'fiction'. Sorry, but the only fiction here is people who try to be something they're not...

4 out of 5 stars Helpflul to those who sufferd childhood trauma.......2000-02-23

It's very sad when those who have been abused are sought after to be discredited. It sure makes it hard to be a vicitim and not be belived because people are always out to discredit things they don't want to belive happen. Stripped Naked is a testimony of one woman's walk through Mulitiple Personalites.. a ray of hope for others like her out there.

2 out of 5 stars Great concept, but the models are a turn off.......2006-05-28

There's no doubt that Mr. Gorman is a talented photographer. I liked the sponteinity with which he used the camera and the concept. However, many of the models are a turn off. They are so skinny that you can see their ribs. Not the kind of book that I would recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Larger format - Intimate feel.......2005-12-26

If you're a Peter Gorman fan, I recommend getting this book. I enjoyed his two previous books, but with this one you get a larger format and more intimate feel. The photos are candid and the girls are natural looking and not overly made up (which I very much like). From the cover shot it looks like it could be called "Messy Rooms"!

1 out of 5 stars I am Very Much DISAPPOINTED.......2005-10-18

5 out of 5 stars Gorman At His Best.......2005-05-15

This book is about one of the most beautiful subjects for a photography essay - pretty naked young women. Gorman's work is very natural as all of the women were photographed in their own homes where they could feel the most relaxed and comfortable. Another plus for the work is that the women are not professional models. They are all comfortable with their sexuality and the work is a gift to all persons.

    Book Description

Told from Alice's journal notes, Dancing Naked is a true story that flies in the face of the usual divorce saga. The reader joins Alice in daily suspense, facing startling dilemmas and dreaming up offbeat solutions. She is blazingly honest and sometimes, irrational and unsympathetic, and yet, she retains her humanity and wit. Alice's husband was her first serious boyfriend; the only man she'd ever had sex with. At age 60, she endures the unraveling of her 40-year marriage and learns to manage her husband's scheming ways. She develops a knack for coping with unimaginable events. Her pluck to rebuild and go on is an uplifting testimonial about conquering some of life's toughest obstacles. The book is part mystery, part survivor's guide. It's not just how Alice makes lemonade from life's lemons, but how she spikes the punch. Alice creates her own quirky, wonderful concoction, and her renewal is a tour de force. Dancing Naked is a compelling read with exposed emotions and uncovered revelations.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars I'm sorry I bought this book.......2007-09-27

A tedious account of the divorce proceedings of a self-centered, well to-do, middle aged, 'pillar of society' who attends church regularly and makes it her mission to destroy her husband's reputation in a small town. The book (a 'journal' written with the view of publishing it and perhaps making it into a movie) is repetitive and filled with mundane information (dental and luncheon appointments etc.)with touches of racism. As a primer for how to survive a divorce, it is more of a 'what not to do' book.

1 out of 5 stars Does not meet expectations.......2007-09-11

The book describes much of anger by seemingly an insecure divorced woman. This book did not point me in the direction to cope with the recent divorce. A lot of lucrative words have been used and accusation of others for the wrong choices made by the author. If you are looking just to read another divorce story, this would be a book for you. However, for someone who is looking for spiritual uplifting and guidance on staying strong through the though time I recommend reading other books available in the market.

    1 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE BOOK.......2007-09-09

This book at best is a sophomoric effort at writing by a seemingly angry woman whose only therapy with her issues was a few phone calls to a likely unethical therapist across the country. At worst it is a racist hate filled book with little basis in legal or therapeutic value. Full of dangerous half truths about Native Peoples this book seeks to hurt and damage others rather than to heal.
Speaking as a therapist this has very little use and provides some potentially damaging information for those trying to survive the trauma of divorce.
Secondly this book foments an atmosphere of racism in a small town and merely offers hate and prejudice as an excuse to dislike someone. Not something we should be doing in the more enlightened time.
I would not recommend this book other than possibly a how to book for "HOW NOT TO WRITE A BOOK".
Do not waste your money on this poor excuse of a book.

    5 out of 5 stars Painful journey.......2007-09-01

Dancing Naked: Stripped, Whipped and Set Free to Survive Divorce Painfully honest, the author slogs through years of divorce trauma to eventually find happiness. This book portrays a woman who has worked diligently for 40 years to maintain a happy marriage, only to find that her efforts have been to no avail. Great reading for all women.

            Book Description

From the earliest stop-action photography to computer-generated wizardry, special effects have thrilled audiences for more than a century. Films such as "Gladiator," "The Perfect Storm," and "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" attest to the increasingly integral part special effects play in a movie's success. This volume does not require readers to have any technical knowledge or be familiar with special effects jargon. With three detailed appendixes, the Encyclopedia of Movie Special Effects provides comprehensive coverage about the subject in a way no other resource does. Three appendixes-listing Academy Award(r) winners and nominees for special effects from 1939 to 1998, special effects magazines, and special effects houses-offer additional insight into this fascinating topic. Featuring more than 360 entries, this comprehensive survey unveils the latest techniques and gadgetry used to create some of the cinema's most spectacular effects, the geniuses who bring the magic to the big screen, and the films that have won Academy Awards(r) for special effects or have contributed significantly to the development of the art. The volume also covers more than 120 experts whose techniques and studios have led to great strides being made in special effects.

            1 out of 5 stars $85~??.......2006-03-19

There's no way this book is worth over $30. It's short, the details are lacking, and the pictures are in black and white. I couldn't imagine spending that much on such a book. If the price tag was smaller, then this would match up, but in its current state, its just not worth it.

            1 out of 5 stars A DISSAPOINTING BOOK.......2000-09-05

I was really looking forward to receiving 'The Encyclopedia of Movie Special Effects'. It's been a long time since a really good book on effects has been written (the last ones being the ILM books). The title of this book (and its price!) seemed to hint that this might be an excellent new book.

When the book arrived I first thought that I had been sent the wrong one - the package seemed far too small. But the parcel did indeed contain the book I had ordered - much smaller than I had expected for a book with such a comprehensive sounding title (and large price tag).

The book is arranged alphabetically and offers a curious mixture of entries - some about films, some about effects artists and some about effects techniques.

The films chosen to be featured are an odd selection. Films such as the recent 'Mousehunt'are included whilst effects classics such as 'Gone with the Wind' (important for its Technicolor Matte Paintings) are not.

The technical descriptions are rather confusing, miss out much important information, are incorrect in some cases, and completely igonre some relatively important processes (Sodium Vapor Travelling Mattes, for example) altogether.

There is a smattering of black and white photographs.

The writing itself feels as if it is written by some kid from high school (although the biography at the back of the book assures us that the author has written a number of other earnest but unrelated sounding titles). I feel that this book has been written by a jobbing author who has spent a few months researching an unknown subject and written about it without any real understanding.

This is a pitty as I feel the subject deserves better.

2 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Special Effects.......2000-08-05

            Great subject matter. Great idea. I take my hat off to anyone who has put a book like this together. Unfortuantely, the most cursory review shows many factual inaccuracies, and argualby painful omissions. The book is very much slanted to the cotemporary works, although special effects have been around for 100 years. The preface indicates that beyond 30 or 40 years back accurate information is hard to find; All the more reason that the information that is there be accurate. Only some examples of the incomplete or innacurate info. Some examples;

..."2001: A Space Odyssey" is described with the effects work supervised by Douglas Trumbull. True, but 3 other effects supervisors worked on the movie too and are pretty boldly listed in the end credits! All of the work by all 4 Supervisors is excellent and worthy of credit - (Wally Veevers, Con Pederson and Tom Howard)

..."Silent Running" is described as the first extremely detailed spaceships on screen. Huh, "2001" (3 years previously) is the movie that changed people's perception for realstic looking spacecraft in the manner credited here to "Silent Running".

...Premier visual effects maestro Ken Ralaton has thus far recieved 5 Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects work, only three are listed even though the last one was in 1994.

...The book describes the impressive miniatures used in Disney's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" as ranging from 18 to 22 inches in length. I believe this should read more like 22ft.

...Speaking of "miniatures" the description given here is way too focused on motion control photography of spaceship type miniatures, only one facet of this work.

...In a similar vein a master in the field of in-camera high speed minaiture photography was Derek Meddings who won an Academy Award for "Superman". he worked on dozens of movies and is mentioned briefly in the entry on "Bond Movies". He recieves no separate listing. Compare this to 'Ray Park', a talented stunt man / actor who's appeared in 3 EFX heavy movies in recent years and is given an entry of his own.

...Front Projection and Rear Projection systems - popular techniques for compositing live action and effects work, are not listed as "processes".

...Showscan - a large format, high-fidelity movie format - is not used in the "Back to the Future" ride at Universal as listed incorrectly here. The ride uses an Imax-based system. This is ironic as this ride was created by Douglas Trumbull, who invented the superior and comparable Showscan system; An interesting irony worthy of mention?

I had to write in when I read other reviews posted here stating how this is "everything you ever need to know about Special Effects". Notably the book istelf does not claim this, and makes several other disclaimers. This book is a good place to start if you are interested in the craft, but is not the definitive work by any means.

5 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Reference Guide of Special Effects.......2000-07-22

The Enclyclopedia of Movie Special Effects has all you'd ever what to know about filmmaking, special effects, and stuntwork. Everything from 1925's landmark "The Lost World" to 1999's "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" is included with great detail and frequent illustrations. It also includes biographies of the great film magicians like Alfred Hitchcock and Stan Winston. Each entry also includes various links to other publications for further reading, making it a great reference piece for the film geek in all of us. Plus, the index includes a listing of every makeup, special effects, and visual effects Oscar given, proving that this book is an invaluable addition to any true filmlover's collection.

1870. Found in this work is a collection and arrangement of hymns and sacred songs. It is intended as a supplement to many books of a similar character already in print. A considerable number of the hymns inserted in this book will be new to a majority of readers, but the author believed they would be added to the list of those sacred songs most dear to Christian hearts.

                            Book Description

Essentials of Corporate Finance, 4/e by Ross, Westerfield, and Jordan is written to convey the most important concepts and principles of corporate finance at a level that is approachable for a wide audience. The authors retain their modern approach to finance, but have distilled the subject down to the essential topics in 18 chapters. They believe that understanding the "why" is just as important, if not more so, than understanding the "how," especially in an introductory course. Three basic themes emerge as their central focus: 1. An emphasis on intuition¿separate and explain the principles at work on a common sense, intuitive level before launching into specifics. Underlying ideas are discussed first in general terms, then followed by specific examples that illustrate in more concrete terms how a financial manager might proceed in a given situation 2. A unified valuation approach¿Net Present Value is treated as the basic concept underlying corporate finance. Every subject the authors cover is firmly rooted in valuation, and care is taken to explain how decisions have valuation effects. 3. A managerial focus¿Students learn that financial management concerns management. The role of financial manager as decision maker is emphasized and they stress the need for managerial input and judgment.

Excellent finance book offering just what is promised, the essentials. Examples are clearly presented with an excellent use of color coding to highlight concepts and formulas. In fact, I purchased this book as a textbook requirement for a pre-requisite finance class (as a refresher after an 8 year hiatus after my BBA). Then, when I actually ended up taking the Financial Management class as part of the MBA program, I discarded the textbook from that class and referred back to this one (got an A in the class). It's that good.

I'm an adjunct professor at a regional liberal arts university, and I admit I've not read as many textbooks as the average ivory tower dweller. That being said, I used this book (through no choice of my own) to teach an Undergraduate Intro to Finance class. Decent text, and some good explanation of the more complex ideas in the second half of the book, but what kills this as a textbook is the HORRIBLE support materials. Errors throughout the Power Point presentations, test bank questions, study problems...I was so disgusted by the end of the semester. It's probably okay as a brush-up text, but not what I'd recommend for newbies.

Very good intro book that is easy to read and easy to understand.
Book takes a very basic approach to explaining things so as students not familiar with finance can easily grasp the concepts. Use of color a nice touch compared to older black & white texts, also lots of recent events (Enron/MCI/M.Stewart) are discussed along with subtle references to Metallica, NIN, Bowie, etc...
Many hints that tie in excel and the web, even an appendix section on how to use your financial calculator. Good 'preview' book to their more exhaustive book aptly titled 'Corporate Finance'
