unrealised idea.......2006-01-14
O.K., the idea behind this book is very good, but it is unrealised idea. I agree with a reader below who said this book is an error galore (I am not reffering to grammar errors but more importantly technical errors). Imageine if we tried to build space shuttle with the same number of errors as in this book (or any other Predko's book). Would it lift off? Yeah right! I was unable to make anything work from his books and I own 2 books. It is so confusing and not worth the money. If you are able to make sence of drunk man talking then go ahead and buy his books, otherwise stay away.
Digital Electronics made easy and fun!.......2003-10-17
This book is fantastic. The two included PCBs were a joy to build and are very helpful when doing lab experiments. This book would appeal to an absolute electronics beginner as well as an expert. The projects are fun and very educational. Two thumbs up!
Typo's Galore.......2003-05-09
I think the idea behind this book is fantastic and if there wern't so many typos and mistakes in the diagrams and project schematics it would be a 5 star book.
The ground and power bus is mislabeld in almost every project. Some of the projects won't run without fixing the bugs in the diagrams.
If there is a second edition, hopefully these issues will be resolved.
Excellent but marred with typos.......2003-01-24
This is an excellent book for neophytes like me. Unfortunately, it is marred by a surprisingly large number of typos, like many of Mr. Predko's books.
Part of this is because he reuses large blocks of text in his many publications w/o really matching up figures with text, etc. He doesn't always match numbers on his printed circuit boards with the text. Perhaps these errors sneak in between editions. Most of these are so obvious there is no problem making out what he meant. Still, I worry that there are typos which I don't recognize.
The printed circuit boards are excellent with plated through holes. Even an inexperienced solderer like me can do a neat job easily and quickly.
Another great book my Mr. Predko.......2002-04-09
I just put in a review for "Programming and Customizing PICMicro MCUs" and I realized that I should also put in a few words about this book - Mr. Predko has really come up with an outstanding book for working with basic digital electronics (TTL).
I graduated from university over ten years ago and while I understood the theory behind TTL, I feel like my understanding of how it works by this book. It really ties together theory with practice adn even shows you hot to create a TTL inverter from transistors!

SIMPLY WONDERFUL.......2003-08-10
Too often, comic books fall under the umbrella of mindless entertainment that one should dismiss as frivolous. I mean, it's not really an art form like painting or literature. I disagree with that. Well, Will Eisner takes a step into making comics an art form to rival those fields with this graphic novel (a form, by the way, that he is credited for having created).
Minor Miracles is a nostalgic look back to the New York of Eisner's childhood. The stories told within are mainly made up of tales told to him by his family about certain characters in the neighborhood. The stories range from the most trivial such as a young man outwitting a gang of bullies, to a fable of a rich relative finding out that a bum is his uncle. He gets him back on his feet by letting him run one of his stores, only to find their roles reversed later on. One of the best stories in the book is called "A New Kid on the Block" in which a boy with no name comes to the neighborhood, and like the Who's Tommy, spreads peace and love until soul-less bureaucrats hunt him down. Also great was a story of a crippled man and a blind mute woman being pushed into marriage by their families and finding that there is love in the world. Until she regains her sight, that is.
Some of these stories, if written without the pictures, would be moving. With the addition of the art though, it really blew me away. It's cool that an artist such as Eisner is still cranking out important work. Some of these stories were poignant and others minor, but the overall experience was one that I need to have again. It touched on some deep themes, such as loneliness, the superficiality of our society, and the need for us to see the beauty in every event, be it good or tragic. This book was a minor miracle. I look forward to reading Eisner's other work.
Minor Miracles.......2003-07-24
A graphic novel from the man who created them, Minor Miracles features three stories set in depression-era ethnic neighborhoods of a bygone New York City. Eisner admits in the forward to believing in miracles and follows his now familiar pattern of almost unbelievable happenings among everyday people.
Minor consist of three stories, the first deals with changing fortunes among relatives, the second with the appearance of a mysterious family-less young boy, and the third waxing and waning love among "cripples."
Eisner has this down to a science now but there was something about Minor the lacked the gravity of Eisners previous work. I almost got the felling that these stories were the ones that didn't make his other books. His previous semi-autobiographical stories all dealt with miracle-like happenings so why the need to announce it this time around?
For this printing, Mr. Eisner has used watercolors more overtly and the comics are printed in a mellow-brown tone rather than black. While somewhat pleasing, I found myself less impacted than Eisners earlier stark black drawings.
Having said all of this, is Minor minor? No. Even though these stories may not be the apex of what Mr. Eisner has or may accomplish they're still top-rate and the kind of stories that you have to exhale afterwards because you've been so wrapped up in the story that you've forgot to breath. Days later the stories (especially the third one) are still playing in my head.
Bottom line: For those new to Eisner, Start with To the Heart of the Storm or Contract with God. For those who can't get enough of Eisner's master storytelling, this will be a welcome addition to you library.
Enjoyable, but not as good as expected........2001-04-24
Although I enjoyed Minor Miracles, I really expected more from it. Although a lot could be done with a book using this theme, most of the "miracles" presented here don't even seem to be GOOD things, necessarily. It's a fun read, but mostly forgettable.
I will mention that I was impressed by Eisner's art. It's fairly detailed, but in a sort of warm, human way that much modern comic art could stand to emulate.
A miracle of storytelling.......2000-10-24
Will Eisner returns with another set of Depression-era stories, this time loosely centered on the idea of miracles. The humor, warmth, and pathos of all his books is here -- with the biggest miracle of all being those moments when human beings connect with one another. That's not to say this book is all sweetness and light -- most of the stories have a bittersweet feel. But that seems to be the point: that in the end, the major miracles are exceedingly rare, but there are things to be joyful about in everyday life, even in the Depression era.
Will Eisner may not have invented the comic book, but he's certainly perfected it. Eisner's art looks like the flow of memories, and the choice of ink and paper gives this book the smoky look of a half-remembered dream. The characters, though, could be anyone at any time who's hoping for something more and better.

Forrest's Philosophy.......2002-01-23
After watching and reading all the adventures in the satirical and probing book and movie, I think Forrest deserved a few beers here and put his advice column mojo working here. Some of them actually make sense and might give a family youngin some good adages for life.
Wow! What a book........2000-03-12
For anyone whose looking for a dramedy book, here it is. Even if you've seen the movie the book will still make you laugh. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is not reading as much as they would like to and want to start on a great book.

Book Description
3D Studio Max 3.0 Workshop takes the approach of "beginning with the end in mind." This book teaches you 3D Studio Max basic design principles, as well as techniques for getting ideas out of your brain onto your computer screen. Chapters include information on backgrounds, set design and modeling, props and secondary scene elements, camera set-up and movement, and lighting. You'll also learn innovative techniques for creating 3D depth, texturing & reflection, specific material development, and dirt, wear and tear, smoke, water and other special effects, and character design and animation. Other topics covered include video post-production, making a demo reel, and getting a job as a CGI artist/animator.
Amazon.com
3D Studio Max 3 Workshop confidently leads beginning Max users through the dark forest of installation, interface introductions, and core concepts. Illustrating the design, construction, and final rendering of a single project, and introducing new features as needed, it drives toward a final goal and artistic vision that started out as a sketch on paper.
The first noticeable thing about this book is the keyboard/icon tear-out sheet, which is invaluable. Featuring every icon in Max's many toolbars on one side, and the most commonly needed keyboard shortcuts on the other, this two-page sheet printed on heavy paper helps the new user get more proficient in Max through keyboard shortcuts and by making it easier to decipher onscreen icons.
The 10 chapters illustrate the step-by-step process of creating and refining an idea, building the set, applying materials, adding lights and animation, and putting it all together in the final rendering. Each chapter is clear, concise, and designed to build on previous material while introducing new functions. The only downside is that the book has no color images--a few pages of color graphics would have been great for illustrating ideas that were presented in the chapter on lighting or surface materials, for example.
The real-world approach that is taken by 3D Studio Max 3 Workshop is encouraging and realistic. If you are serious about learning how to use Max and working professionally in 3-D computer graphics and animation, this book makes a solid teacher. Starting with an idea on paper and following through to final rendering, it gives an overview not only of how to use Max, but how to use it in the real world. --Mike Caputo
Customer Reviews:
Very good book for beginners.......2002-08-27
No book does everything, I've learned that over the last few years, which is why this book can't be a 5 star book, but let me start by saying that this is a great book for beginners. Not absolute virgin beginners, but relatively new beginners. Yes, there are many typos, which is really frustrating, but if you read through the Visual Quickstart Guide (separate book), and have half a brain you can make it work. In a way it makes you have to figure a few things on your own which is important. When I finished the final animated scene, in comparison to the animation shot Duane provides on the cd, my models were a little different in size than his, my lights were placed differently, etc, but basically I had the same thing. I learned a lot from this book. To me the single best thing about this book is that it shows you how to complete something from beginning to end. When you are just beginning, it's important to complete something, even if it is simple. Duane's introduction to Video Post is great, his examples of animation and the use of controllers are a great intro to those new to computer animation, and he proves that you can make a lot out simple modeling techniques. He also provides a lot of art theory, which makes the book a good read. My only real complaints are the typos, which you can deal with, and that I would like to see the discussion of art principles and the step by step instructions more separated. As one reviewer noted, the text is a bit hard on the eyes, and you can get lost when reading directions in paragraph form. Also, when I finish a project, I like to go back and quickly rebuild everything again by just following the step by step, without reading the theory. Overall though, a great beginner book, when read with something like the Quick Start Guide.
Great Book...But Missing Files.......2001-12-03
As a beginner, I found this to be a great book. Its a legnthy tutorial that takes you through all the crucial steps of building and animating a scene. A very cute scene too! The author even gives some valuable advice on creating a reel. However, the missing files were a distraction, especially a missing camera that was required at the beginning.
Who edited this book?.......2001-07-26
The content of the book is actually not too bad. It covers the interface farely well and the project is a good idea that allows you to cover a great deal of the application. The problem I have with this book is all the typos. The book can confuse someone that is not familiar with the interface. (Not to mention the missing files.)
Not for anyone but beginners.......2001-06-06
I've had some experience with 3D programs, and decided, based on reviews that this was a book that would not only show me the basics, but also give an inkling of how MAXs' more advanced features worked. The basics? Yep - lots of it. The advanced stuff? Nope. Not even close. My advice is only buy this book if you have no idea what you're doing with [any] 3D program. All topics requiring skills from intermediate and upwards are covered very sparsely (if at all - there's no mention of NURBS!#?!). The featured artists in the book also have questionable 3D skills. ... is a lot of money for a book you're only going to need for 2 or 3 weeks. I recommend Rob Polevoi's '3D Studio Max R3 In Depth' for the beginner-to-intermediate user.
The Only Choice for New MAX Users.......2001-03-25
Spectacular! This is perect for the new MAX user. A comprehensive step-by-step tutorial demonstrating modeling, texuring, lighting, effects and animation. After reading this book you will have a strong understanding of all the capabillities of 3DS MAX. If you want to learn Max but are intimidated by MAX this is the book for you. The best software book I have ever bought.

The Hitchhikers Guide to...Whoops wrong series!.......2006-05-04
While Dragonstar relies more on hard science than actual fantasy it still can be a bewildering place to play around in. The prestige classes and feats in this book help to define your character in the Dragonstar universe as well as new paths for your character to take. Including the Way of the Wolf. Maybe not the actual title but the Companion introduces a new way to spend a given characters hard won XP: Training! With the investiture of experience points and time a given character can develop new abilities and new ways to improve themselves. Options galore is what this book hs in store. No matter how much you love or loathe the Dragonstar setting, some of the material is deffinately worth stealing for something else. All in all a wonderful tool kit for players and GMs alike.

Book Description
Whittington/Pany’s Principles of Auditing, is a market leader in the auditing discipline and the only text in this market which uses the balance sheet approach (vs. the cycles approach). Until October 2002, Ray Whittington was a member of the Audit Standards Board and prior to Ray being on the ASB Kurt Pany was on the board. This has had a major impact on this revision of the text as Whittington has been involved in the audit standards creation process. Principles of Auditing presents concepts clearly and proactively monitors changes in auditing making the relationship between accounting and auditing understandable. The 15th edition maintains the organization and balance sheet orientation, while adding and enhancing topics of Risk, Assurance Services, Fraud, E-Commerce, and the latest auditing standards to meet the needs of the current marketplace.

Customer Reviews:
The Best Auditing Book Available.......2004-05-19
During the 16 years that I have taught Financial Auditing at the university level I have been constantly on the lookout for the best available book. I chose Whittington & Pany because (1) it is succinct, (2) it presents auditing concepts clearly (although the authors do sugar coat the accounting scandals of the past 20 years and fail to give credit where credit is due by naming the firms involved in them), (3) the page layout is attractive and easy to read, and most importantly (4) my students preferred it over other texts (one student told me that she chose my class after looking through the assigned texts for all of the Auditing sections, an excellent idea).
The current (15th ed.) has been brought up to date with a limited discussion of Sarbanes-Oxley and the PCAOB.
The material is obviously dry, but I found that it was possible to make my classes more interesting by incorporating newspaper accounts of the more egregious audit failures in the assigned readings, and by being honest about the arrogance, greed and stupidity that are all too typical of the accounting profession today. This practice has brought complaints by the local offices of the major firms, to which my department head replied that they are welcome to come speak to the classes to explain their side of the story. To date, they have not accepted the invitation.
Whittington and Pany ROCK!!!!!.......2001-05-08
Let me tell ya! What do you get when you combine Whittington, Pany, and Auditing? It's just a boatload of accounting fun!!! These guys know how to put together a book on auditing. This thing is a real page turner. Damn! Attestation really rocks but Assurance Services will just blow your mind. Even if your're not an accountant, this is a great read. I understand the 13th edition is already a red hot item, so grab a copy today before they're all sold out. This is the one book you'll definitely want to have with you if you're traveling and you have room in your back pack for just one book. Read it, then read it again and again. Seriously, you can't put this thing down. It's THAT good! You'll be talking about it with your friends and family for years to come. Can't wait for someone to turn this puppy into an offering for the big screen. That would be sweeeet!!!
