Classic Stoneware of Japan: Shino and Oribe
ASIN: 0300101953 |
Book Description
Japan's Momoyama period (1573-1615) was brief but dramatic, witnessing the struggles of a handful of ambitious warlords for control of the long-splintered country and then the emergence of a united Japan. It was an era of dynamic cultural development as well, for the daimyos commissioned innovative artworks to proclaim their newly acquired power. One such art was a ceramic ware known as Oribe, which, appearing mysteriously and suddenly, rose to prominence for use in the tea ceremony. Boldly painted and displaying playful new shapes, these dashing wares matched the extroverted world of the warlords. Similar stylistic and technical inventiveness characterized painting, lacquerware, and textiles of the period. Eleven essays by leading scholars and about two hundred catalogue entries present outstanding examples of all these extraordinary works and examine the social and cultural contexts in which they were created.

Surfing Photographs from the Seventies Taken by Jeff Divine
ASIN: 0810950081 |
Book Description
In the 1960s the fishing village of Montauk became the surfer's paradise of the east coast. Located at the tip of Long Island's South Fork, the easternmost point of the Hamptons, this paradise existed primarily for locals-not surfers who migrated to the beach for the summer, but those who were out in the rocky reefs every day, year round. Today, a new tribe of surfers exists-young locals who live by their own rules. Rule number 1: Never tell anyone where the good surf spots are. Rule number 2: See rule number 1.
In the 1990s photographer Michael Dweck rented a house on Ditch Plains beach (site of the best surf break) and gained unprecedented access to this insular community. The End follows the surfers through their daily rituals from early morning wave reports to evening bonfires on the beach, capturing their youthful hedonism. Through portraits, nudes, and photographs of the landscape, this book celebrates lives lived only to surf-an endless summer of perfect weather and languorous beauty.
Customer Reviews:
Summary.......2006-06-27
I was very fortunate to see Michael Dweck's exhibition "The Surfers Life" here at the renown Blitz Gallery in Tokyo last week and I was very impressed. The show was an astonishingly beautiful collection of images by a very gifted photographer who presents his subject with great sensitivity and warmth. And, though many of these images have been seen before in his book The End:Montauk, NY", it was worth a trip to Blitz to see the show live.
The End is Michael Dweck's breakthrough debut collection of extraordinary work. The true first. I believe The End was published to accompany an exhibition at International Center for Photography New York in May 2004. With its handsome production designed by Jeremy Miller and oversize-volume format, the book is a virtual stand-alone mini-exhibition in its own right. It is not really a book, but an art object: one that transcends the notion of a mere "book." It is an object of intrinsic beauty and the mere holding of it in one's hands conveys the good taste, fine quality, and the superb craftmanship that were blended to create The End. Sand-colored silk cloth boards with titles embossed on spine. Photographs and texts by Michael Dweck. Poetic fragment, "From Montauk Point" (from "Leaves of Grass"), by Walt Whitman. List of Plates appended at the end. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Singapore to the highest standards. In pictorial dust jacket with very large flaps, black titles on the spine and elegant glassine vertical band. This book presents the photographer's nostalgic (and erotic) tribute to the legendary beach community. Montauk is one of America's best-kept secrets: The ultimate surfer's paradise, it has remained largely unchanged since it was discovered in the 1960's. It has miraculously been shielded from the crass commercialism and corrupt hedonism that have ruined the magic of the Hamptons. There is something almost mystical about the fact that it is located at the tip of Long Island. "This paradise has existed primarily for locals, not surfers who migrate to the beach for the summer but those who are out in the rocky reefs everyday. In the 1990's, Michael Dweck gained unprecedented access to this insular community. His book follows the surfers through their daily rituals from early morning wave reports to evening bonfires on the beach. Dweck has an eye for the women but it is misleading to label him a female-nude photographer, as many commentators have done. There are photographs of Sonya, Shannon, Katarina, Lilla, Genelle, Jessica and other beach beauties but Dweck is also fascinated by a teenager surfing phenomenon named Kurt, who has been surfing since he was a little boy. Kurt is the Bruce Weber ideal: All-American, blond, blue-eyed, beautiful. What sets him apart from the fashion or commercial model-type is his care-free attitude and complete lack of narcissism. He looks like the young Peter Beard, who stays in Montauk when he is in the United States. Dweck pays tribute to the great artist/photographer with a lovely full-page portrait. A gorgeous book. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color plates and 2 stunning foldouts. In my opinion, one of the most accomplished living American photographers.
Save Your Money.......2006-06-22
The book's title is, "The End." Let's hope that it is just that...the last of a sorry attempt of portrayal to nowhere. We don't need anymore of this crap shoved on us via a misleading cover photo on a dust jacket solely designed to sell a bad product. Most amazon.com people probably did purchase this book because of the nude surfer chick on the front cover. This is as good as it gets.
From the intro double-truck pic of a rear shot of 4 completely nude males, it becomes apparent that photographer Dweck has a jones for males. Lotsa males...128 at first count throughout this large coffee table size book. Had other reviewers pointed this out, I would not have wasted my $12 on a used copy of this $60 book. Why photog Dweck has several one-page deals of a close-up of a rear of a male's head is anyone's guess. Is he also a barber? Or is it just a rear head fetish? Or does Dweck just simply not know what to do with a camera? As far as one reviewer stating "Naturally beautiful women so gorgeous my teeth hurt", where has this person been? Hiding in a cave? Locked up in a basement? Yes, some of the chicks look ok, some are down-right hot, but I see them everyday.
Readers will tire of watching lower to lower-middle class males, some festooned with tatoos as visual crutches for identity, as markers for self-esteem to nowhere. Nor did the one or two shots of drunken derelicts still desperately clinging to the cup that did them in make an impression. I know, this is supposed to be artsy, but don't you outgrow this after art school? And I don't think photog Dweck has been to arts school. Now, if you want a craggy, dried up leather face that appears to have baked in a 120-degree desert for 100 years? Drink-up, but don't waste good paper and print on someone else's ill-begotten lifestyle. People bought this book sight-unseen in the anticipation of seeing others having fun, not on a slow ticket to suicide.
The photog appears to be an amateur and is grappling with what to do with a camera. From the wasted color shot (the only color shot in the entire book) of a double-truck of a blue sky with some clouds to an entire page devoted to a plastic shark.....what is the point? And then there is this chick riding her bicycle in another double truck scene, meandering to nowhere faithfully staying in the photog's viewfinder with an expression of "When is this going to end?"
Please read the other reviews as I have done. Where are they coming from? You might ask are they reviewing the same book as I have? What in the hell is going on?
this book sucks.......2006-03-16
anyone who is from montauk or the hamptons will this this book is lame. number one the photography is bad. number 2 this guy knows nothing about the area. He rented a house at ditch for 1 summer? big friggin deal. The only bright spot in the book is his choice of models, who he photographed badly.
Why is this named for Montauk??.......2005-03-30
Nice pictures but has not much at all to do with Montauk NY except for a few shots of local landmarks, the majority of the book is basically a teen clothing catalog, pretty people scantily clad, not much to taking pictures of beautiful 22 year olds?? Very disappointed using the name Montauk because there is too much natural beauty in this place to waste it on a book of pretty people that could be on any beach.
Stunning Youth.......2004-07-30
Naturally beautiful women so gorgeous my teeth hurt. Michael Dweck seems to capture his subjects in obvious poses that reflect not stiffness, but natural ease that only youth allows. The beautiful women featured along with real surfer-dudes and beachscapes allow one to visually experience a culture and lifestyle that is private and doesn't tolerate gawking.

Book Description
Seers and psychics across Japan turn their eyes to Tokyo, where the lines between light and dark are being drawn. Kamui is caught in the middle, between the shielding Seven Seals and the destructive Seven Harbingers. As part of the X/1999 series, this volume features breathless action and stunning art.
Customer Reviews:
The Overture.......2006-10-02
While X/1999: Vol 1 (Prelude) was an introduction of some of the major characters in the series and merely hinted at the plot, volume two is an overture. The instruments have begun to play and although the story hasn't started yet, many of the characters have arrived on scene. Here we learn about some of their pasts and signs of things to come. Volume two picks up right after volume one leaves off. Kamui is left injured after fighting a strange figure with strange powers. As he sleeps, he is plagued with disturbing and graphic dreams. The blind seer Hinoto attempts to reach him, to get him to understand the gravity of the situation and to get the young man on her side. After reading volume two the reader is still left with so many questions unanswered. So many characters step in for just a scene or two, giving away only hints about their true intentions. Who are all of these people? What are the seven seals, the seven harbingers? What is going to happen next?
Although not all of our questions are answered, we are still presented with a stunning manga. The artwork is beautiful. It's main flaw, the fact that most of the male characters are far from anatomically correct, is more of a stylistic choice. So much attention is drawn to detail, whether it is the swirls of magic in an action scene, the entrails and body parts of a mauled character, or the shading in Kamui's hair. The story is as compelling as it is graphically violent and gory. Although the main character may not have one your heart yet (he can be a rather unlikable sort of fellow) it is quite likely that one of the other characters have already drawn you in. My personal favorite is Sora, who brings a sense of comedy to this rather depressing manga.
By the end of the volume, the reader will be curious to see what happens next. I suggest buying this series more than one volume at a time. You're not going to want to wait for number three!
#1 story by clamp.......2003-11-18
In this vol. we start to meet up with new characters, and learn more about the main characters, the characters get more interesting and interesting....we know that kamui still has feelings kotori and that he hasn't given up on her, and that there opponents who would like to battle kamui , this is a must get manga!!
The story was good, but I don't feel so good........2003-08-03
X/1999 is a wonderful series. It has a compelling storyline, interesting characters, and even a little humor. It's great for anyone who likes manga, except that it's not. While it adds to the story, several scenes in Overture contain gross depictions of violence (including dismemberment). If you are squeamish or sensitive to violence, you should not pick up this book. I'm not even that squeamish, yet I was unable to eat for about half an hour after reading Overture. I highly reccomend this book, but take caution.
One of Clamp's best manga..........2003-03-25
Clamp is probably my favorite manga artist, this being one of their best mangas. Not in the least like the almost babyish Card Captor Sakura, this has a more serious plot and a gothic influence about the end of the world and the battle between the angelic dragons of heaven and the demonic dragons of earth and Kamui- the kid who will choose the fate of the world.
I recommend it for anyone, especially people who've never read Clamp before.
Excellent.......2002-07-27
This is a great item! CLAMP is one of the best working group of comic book artists from Japan, putting out winner after winner such as Card Captor Sakura, Tokyo Babylon, Clover, and X/1999. These comics are what spawned a movie that although was not poorly made, it seemed not to explain much. After all you can't do much with a two hour stretch of time. The new OVA series is much better, let me assure you! Anyway I hope everyone buys this item and the other books to go along with it, it is more than worth it!
Book Description
See the happy bride-to-be!
Grace Fairley lives in South West London with her fiancé, Spencer, a divorce lawyer. They've been engaged for two years and still haven't set a date, a fact that has started to irk Grace no end. In fact, things just haven't been feeling right at all lately, and aren't they supposed to when you're with Mr. Right? Then Spencer goes and makes a fool of himself -- yet again -- on Grace's birthday, and she ends up walking to a taxi company to get a lift home. Alone.
See the guy who dumped her thirteen years ago!
Jimi Malik, a half-Indian, half-Irish writer and ladies man who lives in North West London, has surprised everyone -- himself included -- by deciding to settle down with Kylie, a twenty-one-year-old model from Canada. But when he bows out of his own stag night and goes to catch a cab home, he bumps into Grace Fairley and the past comes rushing back. Like the way they couldn't stand each other. And how their high school hair-pulling routine eventually turned into friendship, then something more. And how he never called again. She's still furious at him and he's still hot for her. But what's the harm in sharing a cab? After all, they're both getting married...Right?

Originally Posted on Romance Junkies in 2005.......2007-05-13
I started this book believing it to be a chick-lit story of a single, thirty-something woman who wonders if her current relationship is heading nowhere. And it is, in part, that type of story. Even more so, however, it's a book about second chances, about finding out that there's more to life than stability, and that what you want and what you need are often two very different things.
Grace Fairley lives a life that many women would envy. She lives in South West London, has a so-handsome-it's-almost-a-sin fiancé, Spencer, fabulous friends, and, well...nothing. She's been engaged to be married for over two years with no wedding in sight, Spencer once again has to work on an important case on her birthday, and he offers her cash-cash-for that special, romantic birthday present. Which, if Grace has anything to say about it, just may need to be a sexual aid, since Spencer can't be expected to run late for work. If Spencer, the crème de la crème divorce lawyer of London is Mr. Right, why does he suddenly feel like Mr. Wrong times twenty?
For Jimi Malik, being half-Indian and half-Irish has always served him well, at least when it came to women. Who could resist those eyes, that physique, that silver-tongued Indian devil? No one, it seems, and Jimi has relished every minute of it. That is, until he does something that surprises everyone, including himself-he proposes to Kylie, a model from Canada. But, the final joke is on Jimi, when he ditches his own stag party, suddenly feeling restless, put-upon, and nothing like the man who in six months made up a pet name for the woman he supposedly loves.
When Grace and Jimi meet up at a cab stand, the shock is immediate-for these two characters went to school together, engaged in the rituals of adolescence, became friends, advanced to the boyfriend/girlfriend stage, and then broke each others hearts.
What follows is a book about renewing old friendships, dealing with new heartaches, and overcoming the past. DO YOU COME HERE OFTEN? is a great book about finding out that love sometimes comes in very strange packages-at the most inopportune time.
Great main characters, boring secondary ones.......2006-09-02
The 2 main characters were intensely interesting; I really liked them. But, too many pages used on the secondary characters which were not developed well at all. Reason for their not being together in the first place was too vague. Ending was not worthy of the tension built up by the book.
Quality Chick Lit and a Great Love Story, Too.......2005-11-17
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes their chick lit with more of a focus on romance. _Do You Come Here Often?_ is a very well-written novel with great romantic payoff not only at the end, but throughout the story. The main and supporting characters are richly drawn and engaging-- you can't help but root for everyone to find happiness.
In some of these types of novels the author is too cutesy or the plot is so unbelievable that it's hard to relax and enjoy the story. But that's not the case with Alexandra Potter. She makes Jimi, Grace, Rhiana, Maggie, and Clive seem like people we either are or know well. She also takes her time developing all the key relationships. To that end, the book description doesn't really do it justice. Grace and Jimi do technically dislike each other, have a one night stand, and then don't see each other for another 13 years, but the motivations and detail that Potter puts into the development of these little hitches on the road to reconciliation are more complex and interesting than the blurb suggests.
This is a book worth your time. Enjoy!
Boring.......2005-05-28
This story has been done time and time again. Don't waste your money. Humor was forced and trite, book was way too long.
Dr. Cupid to the rescue.......2005-04-19
Grace Fairley's just turned 31 she is engaged to Spencer, a divorce lawyer, but despite thier sharing of a flat and their "long engagement" (four years) they still haven't set a date... For Grace's birthday Spencer has arraged a dinner at Grace's favorite (though not his) resturant... During the dinner Spencer drinks too much like he always does and Grace is embarassed by him like she always is and decides to leave the resturant after dinner alone... in a dirty cab... on her Birthday...
The other main character is Jimi Malik he is about to marry 21 year old model, Kylie. His friends are throwing him a stag party at the same restaurant where Grace is celebrating her birthday, and Grace thinks she recognizes him as the boy who broke her heart 13 years before after taking her virginity and promising to call... She tries to ignore him a suceedes while still in the resturant but ends up sharing her cab with him, trying to act like the past was no big deal to her...
After that night and some major thinking about her situation Grace leaves Spencer, for a "break". She is upset about him not having set a date for their wedding and believes that if she leaves him he will give in and commit... also deep down inside she knows that he might not be the "one"...
Right before Jimi is about to fly out to Canada for his wedding he recieves a phone call (rather a message through his friend Clive) from Kylie (already in Canada where she was to meet up with and marry Jimi) that the wedding is off.... Jimi mister heartbreaker is crushed and doesn't see how he... Jimi Malik... could possibly be jilted before his wedding...... Jimi comes to terms with loosing Kylie and realizes that she was probably not the "one".
Though all this Grace and Jimi become friends again... sharing their break-up stories and attempting to ignore their past. When Jimi, a freelance writer, remembers he is supossed to be writing a peice on his NYC Honeymoon he invites Grace along to play the part of his wife... at first she declines but accepts after groveling from Jimi...
Throughout we are exposed to the cheesy radio show "Do you come here often?" run by DJ Dr Cupid and Grace, her friend Rhain and Jimi's friend Clive all enjoy the program, even if for different reasons... Jimi hates it...
Grace's volumptous friend Rhain is a single mom frustrated with the dating scene which she calls "the desert". After several terrible dates she decides to write into the show, signing her letter Cindy and see if anything comes of it... she gets on the show and sets up a date with one of the many respondents to the letter, Michael...
I don't want to give too much away here but lets just say all of that ties together into one cohesive well written novel... Rhain meets the man of her dreams, the one she least expected... Grace struggles with why Spencer is not crawling back, and if she even wants him to, and Jimi realizes that thirteen years ago he made the biggest mistake of his life when he decided not to call...
Dr. Cupid's cheesy call in dating show just might come to everyone's rescue...
Great Chick Lit. Pick it up!

Pretty Good.......2003-02-28
"Meaning of Life" was the last of the Monty Python films, and it returned to the unrelated sketch format of "Monty Python's Flying Circus" and the film "And Now For Something Completely Different." While some of the sketches just didn't work and it lacks the sheer brilliance of "Holy Grail" and "Life of Brian," it is a very funny movie in its own right.
This is the script book. It has plenty of colour pictures and is printed on high quality paper. It contains several scenes not in the final cut ("Adventures of Martin Luther"), and a couple of frills (bizarre intro. about fish, a hilarious correspondence between John Cleese and the editor of The Sun Newspaper.) While not containing the amount of frills that the script books of "Holy Grail" and "Brian" did, it is definitely worth owning.
Contains deleted scenes!.......2002-08-28
This is the companion book to Monty Python's most outrageous film. Great color photos illustrate the script, but the REAL reason to own this is that it is the only place you may ever get to read/see some sequences cut from the film. These are "The Adventures of Martin Luther," in which Jones plays a very randy Martin Luther making the Jewish parents of two young daughters (mother Chapman and father Palin) quite nervous and an extended version of the "Middle Age" sequence featuring Carol Cleveland as a waitress in the Dungeon Room waiting on Idle and Palin. The text to these scenes is what warrants the high rating - otherwise, it's simply a souvenier.
Meaning of What Again?.......2002-06-17
Well, the Python Fellows have done it again! They have produced a book so funny, so rue to nothing, that it could be just a figment of a madman's imagination. If they think that someone will want to buy this book, they are definetly right on, chaps! I hope everyone will buy this book, read it, and then send it to me! (Just kidding!)

from all Companions the second most valuable........2000-09-19
Since the coming out of the second generation of Rolemaster, the companions seem a bit over the age.. but in my opinion, these classical and excellent written companions, esp. Companion II, are a valuable and needful supplement a GM should own. Companion II has 13 new professions, 65 new spells and over 100 new optional skills. Also MasterTables are included. Because of the new professions, the companion is very valuable, including Scholar, Beastmaster, Paladin, Warrior-Mage, Necromancer, Witch, Sage, Shaman, Dancer, Trader, Dervish, Warlock, Conjuror and Runemaster. Additionally the base lists of these new professions. Very valuable to the users of Channeling and Essence companions also, because of the nice informations, backgrounds and spells.

Good Presentation of Yet Another RCA Method.......2006-01-07
This was a good-great book for the Apollo method but as one who has read a lot of these types of books, e.g., TQM, I found the sales pitch a little strong. The explanations were excellent with a step-by-step development, but I see nothing special here. Almost any RCA book will provide similar material. An alternative to this book could be: "Root Cause Analysis A tool for total quality management," or "Quality Improvement Toos & Techniques." The later is an excellent overview of the methods available for investigating problems --- and it is fairly inexpensive. I recommend Dean Gano's book if the Apollo RCA is your flavor.
A unique approach.......2004-01-22
Apollo is the name given by the author to his unique approach to root cause analysis. I'm assuming this (Apollo) explains why there is a naked man on the cover, either that or this is the most unique author photo I have ever seen. The book focuses on causal relationships, emphasizing that there are often many causes (factors) contributing to an undesirable outcome. The author's insights on casual relationships and human behavior are extraordinary, it is obvious he is passionate about this topic and has had extensive experience with it. In addition to explaining " A new way of thinking", the author details specific tools (his own version of a cause-and-effect chart) that are the core of the Apollo method. And just when I started thinking that it would be great if there was software available to do this, he mentions that he has such a product available.
There were a few things I didn't like about the book. In fact, after receiving the book, the combination of the naked dude on the cover (which still creeps me out) and the opening paragraph in the "How to read this book" section which you just have to say "Duh!" to, almost convinced me to not read the book at all. In addition, the branding of "Apollo" throughout the book ( frequent references to "the Apollo method", "the Apollo process", "Apollo tools") made some sections read like scripts from an infomercial. These are minor gripes though, and I'm glad I got by them and took the time to read this excellent book
Great introductory work.......2002-05-02
I teach root cause analysis and have been a practicing failure analyst for nearly 15 years. I've had the priviledge of working with some very expert people in this field. Dean Gano does a great job taking what can be a very confusing and intimidating task and making it clear and understandable.
Dean Gano has been honing his craft for many years and is well respected in the failure analysis community. The only criticism I have is that the process is more geared to providing supporting evidence for possible causes of events. There needs to be more discussion of the need for refuting evidence.
Cause analysis at its best is a structured application of scientific principles (referred to as the scientific method). What the scientific method requires is that you pose a hypothesis (a possible explanation for what has happened) and then gather evidence to support or refute the hypothesis.
I recommend that anyone interested in a better understanding of how refuting evidence is used read "The Rational Manager" by Chuck Kepner and Ben Tregoe. It's the foundational work that provides a complete solution for resolving concerns (problems, decisions, etc). The "Rational Manager" has you break things down and deal with them separately. Dean Gano's book helps you see the larger picture. The other book I use as required reading for our root cause analysts is "Managing the Risks of Organizational Accidents" by James Reason. Together, these three references will help you to significantly improve your ability to resolve problems and will be the three books you will refer to over and over again.
A "Must Read" for anyone investigating failure incidents.......2002-02-02
After several years of pumping equipment failure analysis engineering, this is by far the best book I've read about the failure analysis and problem solving process. Dean Gano's approach covers the full spectrum of associated issues in a very efficient and flexible manner. He challenges a lot of failure analysis "conventional wisdom" in a very convincing manner, truly creating "a new way of thinking" that should greatly improve failure solutions.
Excellent for doing Med Error Root Cause Analysis..........2001-06-28
Read several books and this seems to get to the heart of the matter in the least amount of time. Book is well written, to the point and will get you going within 24 hours.
