Book Description
Tourist art production is a global phenomenon and is increasingly recognized as an important and authentic expression of indigenous visual traditions. These thoughtful, engaging essays provide a comparative perspective on the history, character, and impact of tourist art in colonized societies in three areas of the world: Africa, Oceania, and North America. Ranging broadly historically and geographically, Unpacking Culture is the first collection to bring together substantial case studies on this topic from around the world.
Book Description
Flash has taken the web world by storm, establishing itself as the de facto industry standard for web content and applications. With the release of Flash MX, more and more users are tackling the demanding issues of advanced development. In this book, Purdue University's rising computer graphics expert James Mohler and co-author Nishant Kothary pick up where the best-selling Flash MX: Graphics, Animation & Interactivity leaves off, presenting step-by-step solutions designed to help advanced users extend the awesome power of Flash on their web sites.
Customer Reviews:
Great book even for beginners.......2003-05-18
I'm a beginning flash user, and I picked this book up as a follow up to Mohler's first book. Even though it explores advanced scripting, the explanations are clear enough for beginners like myself to understand. I actually understand OOP because of the great dog class example. There are some really great examples on the cd-rom. It's so helpful to have an actual Flash file to play with, so I can see exactly how it works.
Comprehensive but cold.......2003-02-26
This is a quite thorough book that picks up where Mohler's intro book leaves off. It's written as if a Flash instructor literally transcribed his class presentations, which is good and bad. Explanations are long, but at times are wordy and dull. It will remind you at times of tedious homework assignments and drills. There is quite a bit of slogging through pages with only two or three long paragraphs with no Flash code. That's not bad, but it's a sign that an editor probably could have tightened up the writing here.
Also, these authors need to lighten up and learn to write! The tone they take is often "academic", with all the snobbiness and overuse of big words and long sentences that comes with that. Often it's clear that one or the other of the two authors has written a particular passage--and there are some awful clunkers there. Better instructors and writers strive for a more human, friendly tone.
Also, there are coding techniques that seem to me not to reflect current or common Flash coding practice, like the frequent use of the eval() function and the set() function (which I've *never* seen other advanced Flash authors use).
One good thing: the two long projects in the book are kind of neat, definately better than in some other big Flash books.
outstanding book.......2003-01-30
a great book for any flash student with superb examples . a must for anyone connected to computers..
Great Book!!.......2002-11-08
I bought this book a couple of weeks ago and I love it. It has tons of examples in the CD. It is a great book to learn complex actionscripting.

reluctant 4 star.......2003-08-07
I have been going through this book for a couple weeks and its cool but i got hung up on chapter 6 today because some of the script for download dosent match up with the downloadable files. would be cool if this book came with a cd. I was hung up for over an hour cuz of some misslabled text. I figured it out...they named buttons wrong. ex. butScript instaed of scriptBut(you will know what I mean if u buy this). this book would be 5 star if it came with a cd but as is I give it a 3.75 star for the lack of cd. I am learnig alot though.
Very Helpful with an Excellent Reference in the Appendix.......2003-07-05
I learned a lot from this book and keep it close and handy. The ActionScript reference in Appendix A is terrific. In fact, I like it better than Macromedia's online reference. My only complaint about this book, and this is the second book I've had this problem with, is that several of the example/sample files downloaded had already been completed. That's very frustrating when you're trying to learn.
Flash MX Bible.......2003-02-20
This book contains 640 pages of real world examples complemented by a robust website with source code and more. A very complete work and a must have for anyone serious about Flash MX development.

Book Description
This is the Second Edition (Revised & Enlarged) of a work that was originally published in 1974 (144 pages, cloth) and sold over 26,000 copies in the US alone. It was translated into French, German and Italian, and was also made into a movie, THE PERILS OF GWENDOLINE (1984, directed by Just Jaeckin).
This revised edition was published on December 9, 1999, the birthday of `John Willie`, as well as the twenty-fifth anniversary of the publication of the first edition. It contains 368 pages, which includes a wealth of previously unpublished and uncollected work by the artist. Also included in this expanded edition are 36 black and white reproductions of drawings and paintings (circa 1935-50), most from original artwork and all but 2 have never been published before. Along with the black and white illustrations are an equal number of full-color pages many of which are previously unpublished. The biographical introduction has been expanded to include much new information about J.W. - including 4 previously unpublished photographs of the artist!
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful, beautiful volume.......2002-03-21
If you have the Taschen reprints of the collected Bizarre magazines and are wondering about this book - as I was - don't worry. This book is almost all different material, a good portion of it previously unpublished, and the quality of the edition is high enough to make it a keepsake in anyone's library. John Willie was, without equivocation, the master of genteel fetish art, technically beautiful illustrations of gorgeous women simultaneously in formal attire and bondage. If it sounds quirky, it is, and it is that quirkiness married to Willie's technical prowess and self-restraint which makes this collection as intriguing - and engaging - as it is. There is no sex here, and no full nudity. If you've never seen this work, imagine a Vargas or Elvgren print but with the pretty girl not smiling, but bound somehow or being costumed and you begin to get an idea of what John Willie was doing with his illustrative life.
BUT - just imagining these images does them no justice. Willie never used any 'dirty' words, and his characters are styled after 1930's and '40 serial digest types, even as his work moved into the 1960's. The overall effect is that of a fully conceived world, a complete universe of Willie's - and ours, as the readers - shared neurosis, of our fully realized but morally checked 'fun and nonsense' (Willie's words, not mine).
I am enamoured of this work. It is aesthectically beautiful, it is emotionally engaging, it is affectionate and ironic all at the same time. Where Bizarre magazine left off this volume continues, and where Bizarre is a rememberance this volume is better described as a tribute.
And a more fitting tribute could not be produced. This is an oversized hardcover, cloth bound and with a cloth bookmark - the binding and cover are both very well made, obviously a labor of publishing love. The paper stock is very thick (unlike the Taschen Bizarre collection) and acid-free. The cover of this book is stunning, and even from the spine a beautiful illustration of Gwendoline is visible when the volume is shelved. This is a bibliophile's book, something we see less and less of these days, whose physical presentation was designed to compiliment its content.
Included are also some sketches and unfinished work, and it is always fun to see an artist we admire in their off-the-cuff moments, forming ideas or simply riffing without worrying about an audience. A brief - the best I've read - biography is included, as well as several photographs of the artist himself. There are several full color plates as well, watercolors of Willie taken from private collections.
A beautiful, absolutely beautiful volume. Of the many books I buy and sell and trade, this will stay in my library forever. I can offer no higher recommendation.
At Last.......2002-01-06
As a UK fan of Love Bondage and simular material, I've waited for years to obtain a copy of this book. I can assure all wondering about the purchase that the wait was well worth it. The quality of the illustrations is exelent and there is plenty of bonus material contained within it's bulging covers. Well done the publishers, you made a UK fan very happy this Chrstmas!
All the New Photos!!!!.......2001-11-30
I ordered this book as a Christmas gift for my husband. He has yet to see it, of course, but WOW! I love it! To see the many works that were previously unpublished, what can I say. John Willie really had a hand to match where his heart was! It's a great book for any one who loves erotic art or is familiar with the story of Gwen!
The perils of Gwendoline, a none PC world........2000-10-02
This is a beautifully produced book, a new printing with additional information and working drawings never published before. In this is a weird world, where the normal rules do not apply, all the (invariably beautiful) women are both strong and submissive, a weird dichotomy that seems to make sense in John Willie's loopy world.
No situation domestic or public takes place without someone, usually the innocent abroad (Gwendoline), falling into the clutches of the nefarious villian, his mistress and the wicked maid.
There is also mysterious secret agent (U69) who rescues Gwendoline, only to torment the strangely receptive girl.
Do not give this to the innocent or the young, however anyone who can appreciate the charm and strange innocence of his art, and this is art, this is a must have. Mad, bad and wonderful to know.
Mark
Well recommended.......2000-03-30
Much vaunted by the modern British Bizarre magazine and worththe outlay. It's a shame it's so hard to get hold of... Very well done etc.

Book Description
Vintage humor from a master of the tongue-in-cheek comment. 42 delightful pieces display Sullivan's gentle touch in "The Passing of the Old Front Porch," "A Bachelor Looks at Breakfast," "An Innocent in Texas," "How to Change a Typewriter Ribbon" and scores of other amusing selections.
Customer Reviews:
Gentle humor from a forgotten master.......2005-07-10
Frank Sullivan is one of my favorite humorists, and this collection is a fair representation of his work. But the title is a bit misleading. Although there are many Sullivan classics in the book, including "A Garland of Ibids for Van Wyck Brooks," "The Night the Old Nostalgia Burned Down," "An Innocent in Texas," "Pencil-Chewing," "How to Change a Typewriter Ribbon," "A Bachelor Looks at Breakfast" and some of his famous "Cliche Expert" pieces, there are other pieces that do not rank among his best. Fortunately, even mediocre Sullivan is better than the best of a lot of other humorists. Unfortunately, few people have even heard of Frank Sullivan, much less read his stuff. He was a contemporary of the great Robert Benchley, and almost as good (nobody was as good as Benchley). Like Benchley, Sullivan did not write cruel or mean-spirited humor. His was of the kinder and gentler variety, much like that of Erma Bombeck and Art Buchwald, but that doesn't mean it wasn't funny. Like Benchley, Bombeck and Buchwald, Sullivan was frequently hilarious. Although he died in 1976 at age 83, and his best and most productive years were in the 1920s, '30s and '40s, Sullivan's stuff, which dealt mostly with small matters of everyday life, still has contemporary appeal. If you can find a copy of "Frank Sullivan at His Best," get it. He'll make you laugh, chuckle and smile. And these days, we need all the humor we can get.

Book Description
Most books about B-movies are straight-forward genre guides, biographies, or encyclopedias. Not this one. In addition to film showmen, gimmicks, cult, camp, and trash movies, Land of a Thousand Balconies documents Jack Stevenson's first-hand exploration of movie theatres, lamenting the disappearing sense-of-place that is such an integral part of the movie-going experience-from the notorious grindhouses of San Francisco, to the store-front cinemas of Seattle and New York, to the underground film clubs of Europe.
Customer Reviews:
A Personal B-Movie Memoir Complete With One-Armed Garden Gnome.......2006-06-24
Jack Stevenson has devoted a good part of his life to the pursuit of eccentric screen oddities, and this book is a very personal look at his journey. Most books on the subject are general guides to the genre and read like a "top ten list" of the worst movies divided by categories, but this is more of a true B-movie biography. He is candid in talking about the relative obscurity and squalor he has endured for the love of the genre, and his concluding chapter is probably the best piece ever written on the psychology of celluloid collectors.
Stevenson chronicles his life in the underground movie "business" (which is never truly lucrative) from San Francisco to Copenhagen (which has a bustling underground movie fan base, going all the way back to the production of "Reptilicus" in Denmark) and along the way details his contacts with eccentrics, involvement in film "happenings," and most amusingly for me, recounts the film festivals he has been involved with, my favorite of which is his participation on the jury of the First Annual Freak Zone Festival in Lille, France, in which the grand prize was a one-armed garden gnome. Later as a jurist for the No-Budget Film Festival in Hamburg, Germany, he had the opportunity to fling a fish into an enraptured audience as a "Political Act" (his capital letters, not mine.) The decadence of these festivals (a showing of "The Hypnotic Eye" was celebrated by excess consumption of Bloody Marys and pork rinds) is irreverently covered, and gives readers a hint of the mindset required of hardcore B-movie aficionados.
This book is unique in the genre of cinema literature, and I recommend it to true lovers of supremely bad movies everywhere.
An excellent history of film collecting........2005-11-27
If you go the TLA video in Philadelphia on Spruce Street, you will see a wonderful display of movie schdules from the days when the TLA video chain was an actual theater. On pages 82 and 83 of this book, Jack Stevenson reproduces some of these great schdules from days gone by. Once upon a time you had to actually go to a movie theater to see cool movies. They hardly ever showed up on TV and if they did it was at 3 AM. I've had the pleasure of corresponding with Mr. Stevenson for well on twenty years and I can attest to his love for obscure movies. It shines through in the pages of this book.
Most of the book's chapters are essays on B-movie collecting and presentation. Chapter five, "A Secret History of Cult Movies," may be the best article ever written on the subject. The final chapter, "Confessions of a Film Collector," is the best chapter in the book. Here, Mr. Stevenson shows you the world of fellow film collectors.
It's a shame this book hasn't received the attention it deserves. It may be one of the best ones ever written on film collecting.

Worth the money.......2005-09-17
This set me straight on a few things while setting up my business. It is well written and easy to understand. I would recommend this to any 1st time business owner starting out.
Great book!.......2005-01-07
Full of the information you expect based upon the title of the book. The information is detailed so you have the guidance you sought.
This book is like an encyclopedia of small business. I'll definitely be returning to this book throughout the years.
Just what the doctor ordered!.......2004-05-19
Nolo's Legal Guide to Starting and Running a Small Business was exactly what I needed to help start my company off on the right foot. I don't have a very strong legal backround and would have been way over my head if I'd tried to forge ahead totally alone but at the same time I didn't want to spend a fortune consulting a lawyer. If you're in a similar situation then Nolo's Legal Guide is the perfect solution. It is well written, well organized, thorough, and very easy to use. It's a great general start-up kit that would be helpful to any fledgling business that I can think of. If I had had to call a lawyer to answer every legal question that arose in the first couple of months (a huge number) then my company may easily have never gotten off the ground. I was so pleased with this product that I have since purchased two more Nolo books (Tax Savvy for Small Business and The Employer's Legal Handbook) that are more directed at business owners who have gotten through the initial start-up phase. Both of these books are also excellent and I would recommend them as follow ups to the Legal Guide to Starting and Running a Small Business.
Complete Legal guide for STARTING a business........2003-08-11
There are several books in the market on how to incorporate your company based on the state. Even though there is an advantage to these books as you get state specific information for filing paperwork to incorporate, usually there isn't any other information in these books that you can use.
This Nolo guide on the other hand stays kind of generic in the sense that they don't spend too much time in how to fill out the incorporation forms and where to file. Instead, they give good information on every subject you would need to research when starting a small business.
The book starts off by explaining the different legal forms of corporate entities you can choose for your business and details each of these forms in the next three chapters. After this, there are more than 20 chapters devoted to almost any kind of situation you may encounter. For example - there is a chapter on Resolving Legal Disputes, a chapter on Small Business Contracts, a chapter on Home Based Business, etc. Some of the topics I had no prior knowledge of and gained tremendously from - Retail Pricing and Return Practices, Zoning Laws, Deducting Expenses for Business Use of Your Home, Workers' Compensation, Thirteen Common Sources of Money, and Strong and Weak Trademarks.
This is a good book to read when you are STARTING your own business. After that, you will probably need to research more into the topics that are relevant to your situation. Otherwise, there wouldn't be so many different legal guides that small businesses can use (from Nolo). Obviously, as your particular situation becomes more unique you need to refer to the specific books that have an advanced treatment of that topic. And finally, it is always better to seek a lawyer's help after being aware of the basics of the Law.
As usual, Nolo does a fantastic job of covering a broad range of topics in a very detailed fashion without losing the reader's attention. There are a lot of examples to explain the various topics and everything is in plain English. I especially like the references to the IRS forms and publications you need in various circumstances. When you go to the IRS website, it isn't clear which form is relevant to you. It's neat that Nolo makes sure to reference the right form when they are discussing a particular subject.
I hope your small business succeeds and that you find this book helpful in getting things started. Be sure to check out the other Nolo books when you are past the initial stages and definitely build a good working relationship with a trustworthy lawyer for times of need. Good luck!
