I found an old copy in a library and searched this out. I bought the hardcover one on amazon cheaply. It has been revised for so long you may as well buy the old. it's not just about editing and goes through how to sequence shots for action (a chase) etc, goes through some citizen kane shots. Has quite a few pictures of sequences and other stuff. I highly recommend it. It's a massive book.
Want to make films? Read this book!.......1997-11-24
First you have to find it. Incidentally, I am sure it is not extremely difficult to find, for I happen to have found it accidentally in a film book store in Hollywood. Needless to say this book provides any potential film maker with an exciting view of the craft, turning mechanics into art. It is written in a clear style and in an almost profound way it will change the way you understand cinema and editing. Reisz and Millar will teach you how to turn the art of film into film art.

This isn't a power class, although a shaman can be quite powerful.
This isn't a class that simply begs, borrows and steals from other classes to make an amalgam. This is a new, unique and interesting class, one that was definitely missing from the spiritual worldview of the d20 universe.
Well-written, intelligent and obviously well-researched, I recommend this book to any players interested in playing a spiritist character and to any DMs looking to add some dimension to their "primitive" or indigeneous cultures.

Where's the Shamanism?.......2007-09-26
I suppose the main theme of this book could be "Where's the Shamanism?" The author is apparently attempting to reconstruct the Celtic shamanic tradition; thankfully, he doesn't try to say that the druids were all shamans. However, what this book ends up being is Celtic neopaganism with some shamanic techniques and concepts thrown in for flavor.
The book *is* well-written, though there are some typos in there. And as a book on shamanic-flavored Celtic neopaganism, it would actually be pretty good. Maybe not entirely historically accurate, but it would be functional for those who are quite happy in a modern paradigm. The author covers a lot of ground for the basic to lower-intermediate practitioner, particularly in introducing hir to this magical/spiritual system. While a lot of the material is Celtic neopaganism 101, there are some exercises which would have the potential to help the reader start on a more intermediate path.
One of the biggest problems is that the mixture of components isn't well-blended. There's information on Celtic mythology, including various dictionary-style lists of gods, "totem" animals (animals found in Celtic myth, but with no proof as to whether they served as clan/family totems or not), and correspondences for the directions that don't seem to have any actual foundation in Celtic culture. (I'll touch more on this in a minute). The shamanism portion is mainly a sprinkling of techniques, and the idea that the shaman is primarily an eco-pagan, with not too much focus on the community service. The two areas of study do not sit well together.
The issue is that there's too much *neo*paganism and *neo*shamanism mixed into this. I can see elements of Harner's core shamanism in there, particularly the focus on healing (as opposed to other shamanic functions), and it seems that the author has a rather incomplete understanding of what *traditional*, indigenous shamanism(s) is. Additionally, the bulk of the exercises are very heavily scripted guided meditations; shamanic journeys tend to be *much* more free-flowing and individual.
My other complaint is that while he seems to have a lovely bibliography in the back, the fact that there are no internal citations, either in-text, footnote or endnote, means that I had no idea how he used them (other than asterisks denoting which sources were particularly useful-but not why). This meant that there were a LOT of times when I sat there, scratching my head and wondering "Oooookay, where did he get THIS piece of information? Where is this COMING from?"
I don't really feel the author accomplished his stated intention with this book. If he wanted to reconstruct the shamanic practices of the ancient Celts, then he needed to be looking at older forms of shamanism, not neoshamanism.
Cultural Misappropriation Dressed Up as Authentic Tradition.......2002-01-27
John Matthews is a gifted wordsmith, and he has written many books. However, what he writes is not handed down from any Celtic tradition. He has taken Michael Harner's core shamanism and, in place of North American Indian images, Matthews has substituted a variety of unrelated motifs and images from Welsh, Irish, and Arthurian tales. For example, Matthews substitutes the "crane bag" of Mannanan Mac Lir (an Irish figure) for the medicine bag that Harner adopted from various indigenous peoples. There is no evidence that Irish religious figures ever had "crane bags," and the symbol is not found in any other Celtic tradition. Yet on Matthews goes, mixing images and symbols from various eras and traditions, ignoring their integrity and twisting them to suit his purposes. Almost any meditative technique will produce certain results, and you may find that Matthews' techniques (in this book and others) work for you. However, what you will be using is an adaptation of Harner's core shamanism, not anything passed down from Celts of any tradition. You might as well read Harner's book _The Way of the Shaman_ or take a course from him and substitute whatever symbols appeal to you. For accurate examination of shamanic elements and behaviors in various Celtic traditions, see L.E. Jones' _Druid, Shaman, Priest_.
Somewhat disappointing.......1999-12-30
John Matthews is an important New Age writer on Celtic and Arthurian topics, and has written some valuable books on Celtic 'Shamanism'. Unfortunately, this book is essentially a reworking of Michael Harner's 'core shamnism', dressed up in some Celtic motifs. While that approach may be useful for beginning students, it shouldn't be mistaken for actual Celtic practice.

Matthews offers a concise introduction into the realm of Celtic traditions. This book is especially useful, not only to those who are new to the "old religions", but also to those who are looking for a more solitary approach. My only problem with the text is the generally phallocentric viewpoint of the material, and those who endeavor to read this title should take that into consideration.

This is a wonderful book for beginners, with enough accurate research to satisfy advanced students and purists. People drawn to Celtic practices, particularly Shamanism instead of Wiccan traditions, will find this book a valuable addition to any Pagan/religious library.

Dissapointing reference material.......2004-05-26
I ordered this book based on the glowing reviews, here is a more honest review. As a reference material the book is sorley lacking and is nearly unusable. Most of the plants do not have so much as a sketch let alone a picture. The ones that do have drawings are poorly done and not very helpful. The very few that have photos are in black and white! There are so few plants described in this book it would have only taken a few short pages to include color plates of all the described plants. At the very least drawings should have accompanied EACH description, and included various parts, stages of growth etc.
Coupled with the fact that the suggested uses are very vauge makes this book nearly useless. Other than the very obvious well known plants (that recieve multiple pages), the more obscure plants get a very brief description with a short "guess" as to their properties and uses. The authors obviously intentional vaugeness leads one to be suspect of his sources not to mention his actual knowledge of what he is describing.
At best this book could be used to learn the scientific names of said plant so that one could do further research using better, more complete resources.
While I certainly wasn't expecting a "how to" manual, I did at least hope for a more complete reference material in the spirit of other field guides. This book falls way short of being useful as anything much more than a cofee table curiosity.

I can't say enough good things about this book. I am a personal finance junkie and am really getting into watching my investments grow. I have finally found a book that suits me in every way. I love the idea of a good old lazy portfolio. It is what Warren Buffett has been doing for the last 50 years (Buy quality and hold forever). I have probably read about 40 books on personal finance and investing and this book is now number one on my list. I had a hard time putting this book down. It is very easy to understand for beginners and very motivational. If I could only own one book on investing, this would be it.

What I got from this book is that investing the correct way is a long and very boring process. This guide breaks down the investing terminology so well that even the average joe can understand. Mr Farrell does a decent job at simplifying the process of investing.

I agree with reviewer "mthoran" on substance, although the book didn't raise my ire quite so much. It's an amusing, fluffy-light book, repetitious to a fault perhaps, but it does point the reader in the right directions.
Maybe the best recommendation is: don't buy the book, borrow it from the library or a friend, read it quickly (skimming a lot) and then move on to books with more substance.
At least it won't hurt you. There are many investing books that will.

What is he talking about?! He assumes we all understand these "terms" already, without starting from the beginning. He starts off the intro telling us to sit and relax, enjoy this and that... 4 TIMES in a few pages. Then, he rips apart others who build up hype, which is exactly what he does. I'm glad this came from the library. This book was meant to be simple. It, like so many others, makes the reader feel stupid.

This book was very helpful. After reading it I understand the terminology and principles behind investing. I also like the fact that the book helped you on your way as well by giving you further resources and tools to use after you're finished reading the book. I would definitely recommend this book to new investors! I would also recommend first reading Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and Think Like a Billionaire by Scot Anderson.

The book not only tells you how to invest, cut your taxes, get the best deal on insurance, etc, but gives specific resources like websites, associations, publications, government agencies that can help you put the advice into action. If you have this book on your shelf, you have no excuses. You may not read it cover to cover -- but any question you may have about managing your finances is answered somewhere in the 970 pages! Jordan gets you started and then provides you comprehensive bibliographies and webographies to explore your topic in depth. Every household needs an up-to-date reference guide and this is the best one out there right now. Unfortunately, it missed the latest changes to the tax code, but I'm sure the soon to be released Everyone's Money Book: Retirement Planning will catch them.

The book is thick. It consists if rich information in different topics in personal finance and investment.
Jordon has done an excellent job in illustrating some complicated concepts (e.g. stock and bond exchanges) in concise and clear wording.
The writer also produces some useful log sheets or records helping readers to work out their financial status. However, a drawback is that these sheets are put in-between main texts, interrupting readers from finishing reading pieces of writing. I am sure readers would find it more convenient if these stuffs were put at the end of each chapter.
