Book Description
Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599–1641) is among the greatest portrait painters of all time. The 1990s opened and closed with major exhibitions devoted to his work, and now the long-awaited catalogue raisonné of his painted oeuvre is complete.
A native of Antwerp, Van Dyck also lived and worked for long periods in Italy and England, where his brief, productive life ended. He is best known for his work at the court of Charles I. His full-length portraits of aristocrats in the Caroline court and in Genoa, Antwerp, Brussels, and The Hague influenced the history of Western portraiture into the twentieth century in the work of John Singer Sargent. Handsomely designed and illustrated, the volume includes a reproduction of every known authentic painting by the artist as well as the provenance and the significant facts and literature on each. This catalogue raisonné is, fittingly, the collaborative work of an international team devoted to the study of this major international artist.
Susan J. Barnes, an independent art historian, co-curated a Van Dyck exhibit in Washington, D.C., 1990. Nora De Poorter is director of the Rubenianum, Antwerp. Oliver Millar, Surveyor Emeritus of The Queen’s Pictures, organized an exhibition of Van Dyck’s English work at the National Portrait Gallery, London, 1982–83. Horst Vey, former director of the Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe, is author of the standard work on Van Dyck’s drawings.

Could do with some colour.......2005-08-23
For such a large size book it is very disappointing that there are so few colour images and such as are printed are not on the scale of size that would let the reader revel in the finer detail of Van Dyck's work. It is understandable that the catalogue section of the book was Black & White for reasons of economy, but the preceding pages could have benefited from colour close-ups and full page plates. The book may be useful for a scholar, but it will remain to other books to exemplify the genius of Van Dyck. There is a more affordable and enjoyable option in Christopher Brown's book "Anthony Van Dyck" published by Rizzoli in 1999.

Insightful book on editing.......2000-02-09
Gabriella Oldham has collected a wide variety of editors from a wide variety of backgrounds to ask about editing.
A really useful book on the various approaches people have on editing and what their working methods are. Comphrehensive interviews from people who have worked on films such as Ben Hur to documentaries. Those who enjoyed this book should also have a look at Vincent LaBrutto's 'Film Editing'.

Book Description
Walter Girotto's works are pure flights of fantasy. Melding a modern sensibility with a Renaissance style of painting, he achieves a remarkable effect that is uniquely his own. His women exhibit a classic beauty and elegance, but also an undercurrent of erotic lust. Timeless yet torrid, the paintings in this oversized volume will leave you wanting even more, as Girotto's old world charm and 21st Century sensuality creates legions of new admirers.

A CLASSICAL STYLE IN EROTIC ART.......2005-10-10
Looking at the cover to The Art of Walter Girotto, I knew I was in store for something that was very different that most of the fine material put out by SQP. This was something with a decidedly different look. Oh sure, there's a beautiful, nude woman on the cover, but upon opening up the book I was surprised at what I found there. Walter Girotto was a totally unknown artist to me until I got this book. Girotto is an Italian artist who came to the United States back in 1985. I hesitate to categorize him as a pin-up or erotic artists, although his work certainly has those qualities. But Girotto is something more. Working in oils, pastels, even crayon and colored pencil, his work produced on wood gives it an aged, textured, grainy look. He blends a Renaissance period look with 21st century eroticism to create a completely unique style. Going beyond traditional pin-up art, Girotto's work really classifies as fine art.
His different methods and tools produce some startling work, and it's really unlike anything I've ever seen. Take the piece simply called "Nude 30" showing a radiant blonde that was finished with colored pencil on prepared paper. I don't think that paper was prepared for Girotto! "Shauna Wearing Red Boots" features the beautiful subject lying nude on a divan clad in only red boots. These pieces complement his smooth, soft style perfectly.
I love a painting called "Unconcerned" in which Girotto combines oils and pastels on this seductive woman with full, pouty lips and eyes closed. "Love Temptation" seems derived right out of the 1500's with the nude blonde subject holding a bunch of pink roses while a cherub hovers over her shoulder. Julie Strain has never looked quite so refined as she does in "Julie Strain Portrait" showing the scream queen amidst of Renaissance Era sculptures with a cherub lying at her feet.
Throughout the 100 plus page collection you'll find yourself mesmerized at this incredibly talented artists who has taken eroticism to a whole other level. The book is printed on slick, glossy stock. Fantastic!

good: different style of pin-up art mixing renaissance style and modern poses in high quality
bad: this is a magazine and not a paperback; the cover and pages are very thin and crease with casual flipping; SQP publishing can do better; if you are a Girotto fan go on-line and seek out the hardback version though pricey

Grand Slams is the Funniest Baseball Book Ever.......2001-12-12
Hi, I am Glenn Liebman and I am the author so I am hardly unbiased. I loved putting Grand Slams together. Over one thousands of baseball's greatest and meanest quotes. Some of my favorites include Casey Stengel talking about star pitcher and party animal Don Larsen who wrapped his car around a telephone poll at 5 am. during spring training. Casey said, "He was either out pretty late or up pretty early." Pitcher Dennis Lamp once said of outfielder Luis Polonia's defensive abilities--"If you hit Polonia 100 fly balls, you could make a movie out of it--Catch 22. Got to love the work ethic of hall of famer Hack Wilson who said about playing drunk--"I have never played drunk. Hungover, yes, but never drunk."
If you like these quotes than there are 998 more waiting for you. Makes for a great gift idea for any baseball fan. (...) Thank you and enjoy the book.
hilarious -- great for the baseball fan.......2001-04-24
let's face it, this is a great gift for guys who love baseball. it's got quotes from the older players that are part of history (like yogi berra, babe ruth, joe torre), stuff that makes you think about the game and quotes that will just make your hair stand up on end (i.e. john rocker)... I'm buying 2 copies as gifts for father's day.

Okay, so it's not Steinbeck.......2007-01-09
I liked this book very much. No, it's not riveting, and it's not Steinbeck. If every author had to write like Steinbeck to be published we wouldn't have more than three or four books a year to read. I like books written by real people. It makes me feel like maybe I could do it too.
I enjoyed Barb's descriptions and impressions about the places she went and the people she met in her old Toyota Chinook with her dog. How so many people asked "Aren't you afraid"? Her answer: "Afraid of what"? I worried for her that her camper would breakdown and make her trip a disaster. I worried that her dog would be hit by a car.
I could relate as I often drive 700 miles each direction to the family cottage in Ontario, Canada with just my dog. I think nothing of traveling alone and am surprised when others look at me as though I must be a little bit crazy. For me, taking off like that by myself is pure joy! And I'm about the age Barb Thacker was when she made this trip.
I've ordered her next book and am looking forward to reading it. I hope others feel the same way.
Take it for what it is........2003-08-23
I can see why some readers may not find this book to their liking; my wife read it after me and would puff her cheeks every few pages at something 'Barb' had written. I loved it, though.
Barb ventures from her New Mexico home up to the Maritimes on the Eastern Canadian coast and back in one 4 month stint staying, more or less exclusively at campgrounds around the country. The book is in large part, a recounting of her trip in diary form, from the people she met and the places she visited to the antics of her loveable dog, Ink. Although Barb can get a little Mother Earth-y for me at times, I loved this book enough to purchase her follow-up.
How Can I Be Lost When I Don't Know Where I'm Going?.......2003-04-03
This book struck a veritable symphonies worth of chords inside the soul of this fastidious critic. It is quite refreshing to read the intimate first-person observations and perspectives of this brilliant author's travels. After reading this book, you will feel like you have just met an old dear friend. It will likewise have you listing the house with the realtor, purchasing that little camper and fulfilling that primal desire --- wanderlust. I thank Barb Thacker for such a brilliant book.
One of the best trips I ever took, without leaving!.......2003-04-03
Barbara's humor is the type you giggle yourself into a heap over then explode trying to repeat it to the next person you see. Nothing comes close to giving you a most real-life feel of seeing the scenery pass by. An ultimately necessary book for all gypsies, nomads, wanderers and every person in between.
Puhleeese!.......2003-02-14
This is a more or less verbatim rendering of her diary and a deadly boring read. All her visits to friends are detailed. This might be nice in a letter to mutual friends but the fact that the Grahams were moving from Ghost Ranch to Durango or that "Barbara and her husband were contemplating a divorce" is not of interest to me.
And then there are the teasers that turn out to be dead ends, for example, "I had never been to Crested Butte and just loved the name. Sure enough, the road was marked. We headed down a hill and past an interesting guest ranch. About three blocks later, the pavement ended. Nothing but gravel. I wasn't sure Tessie (the nickname of her vehicle) was ready for 20 miles of mountainous gravel road, nor did I feel I was ready to tackle it either. We turned around and went back to Route 133 which led us north through beautiful country. The weather was great..." ...
Book Description
I Know Where I'm Going! (1945) is widely regarded as one of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's most remarkable achievements and a cinematic tour de force. A simple moral tale set in the wild Scottish Highlands, it follows the journey of a headstrong young woman forced by her encounter with this magical, mythic world and its exotic customs to revise her materialistic priorities.
Pam Cook traces the film's production history, exploring its place in Powell and Pressburger's canon and showing how it wove into its narrative the memories and aspirations of an international group of filmmakers working in 1940s Britain. Focusing on the extensive use of special effects, she reveals a technologically ambitious masterpiece. I Know Where I'm Going! is, for Cook, a multilayered work rich in allusions whose emotional power reaches beyond boundaries of time and place to touch profound human desires.

Dr. J Knows How to Pack A Punch.......2007-05-14
I was a student of Dr. J's a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed his class. What I thought would be boring material turned out to be very exciting and interesting. When my husband took Dr. J's course a few terms later, this book was being offered as supplemental reading in several classes and I demanded my husband buy it because I knew that it would be filled with witty satire, enlightening prose, and provide much food for thought. Dr. Johnson is a man that really understand human nature and all of its quirks. This book is not only a reflection of his beliefs but a reflection of his wit, humor, and an insight into the great guy he is. I enjoyed every page of the book!
Excllent and entertaining book.......2007-01-11
I enjoyed every page. I found the book both delightful and entertaining, as well as helpful with some things i was rwestling.

Helen Wallace has done it again. This book is every bit as funny as the "High Back Pain and Very Close Veins." The only thing wrong with it--it was much too short! I look forward to reading more from her in the future.

Book Description
Fran Carlen's poetry reads as if it had been written at the turn of the last century, on the continent, had been forgotten, and then found its way to the present day in a steamer trunk; as if a translation of a romance language, where the translation doubles as the original; everyday concerns metamorphose into flirtations with the absurd, and then back to the banal. Voices and wit such as this are difficult to find and more impossible from which to wrest oneself.
Fran Carlen lives and works in New York. Her work has previously appeared in journals such as Combo, Fence, The Germ, The Hat, InPrint, Sal Mimeo, and Shiny.

Great Supplement for d20 Future.......2007-01-04
I GM a d20 Future game and this book just arrived on my doorstep. I spent about 10 minutes perusing the book and found at least 20 ways to spice up my campaign just from that preliminary browse. And this is supposed to be a player supplement! By no means is this book essential for your campaign, but it will save you the time and effort of making this crap up on your own (e.g., this book is full of new gear, cybernetics, occupations, feats, skill applications, prestige classes, and much, much more).
If you GM a d20 Future campaign or are a player in a d20 Future campaign, I recommend that you purchase this item. You will not be sorry.
To Infinity and Beyond!.......2006-03-12
The future is a big and scary place for some of us. For others it a place with no boundraries and as many opportunities to discover new things as there oppurtunities for these discoveries to kill us. Literally hundereds of futuristic novels, short stories, movies, television programs, radio programs and cartoons have been made and dedicated to the future or at least the futuristic. In fact the future is so big no role playing game can ever hope to encompass all of it. All it can do is give us the GMs and Players some tools to forge our own stories in the worlds of tomorrow.
Roleplaying is all about collective story telling. And some of the greatest stories are seen through the lens of science fiction and science fantasy. This book gives you more tools to forge those stories. You need D20 Future to get the most out of this book. Future Tech would be nice but is not required.
Whereas Future was really just a basic overview that was expanded in the subsequent books in varying degrees of detail, most of that was more geared for the GM who runs things behind the scenes than for players who actually play in these universes. Future Companion is geared towards the Player almost exclusively. More ways to get the most out of the mutation rules from the original future, more occupations to give an idea as to what the heck brought the character to beginning of the story and the obligatory gear and classes.
On a personal note, I have been buying D20 Modern books from Game Mechanics since they first put out Modern Players Companion and I have yet to get a bad book from them. Future Players Companion is no different. Many of the people that worked on the Future books help make this as perfect a primer for the game as their first book was. As a player, this book gives me a wealth of options for my character to be the best he or she might be in the collective story. As a Game Master this book is a wealth of information for my own NPCs and to help my players finalize their characters so the whole game runs smoother. It also helps as a spring board of new ideas, especially possibililities I would never have thought of otherwise. If you seriously want to D20 Future, your campaign will be all the poorer for not purchasing this book.
Book Description
Heroes can face some pretty tough decisions. But nothing compares to the choices a player has to make. Whether at character creation or when leveling up, just figuring out how to get the hero on your character sheet to match the one in your imagination can be the toughest challenge in the game. Modern Player's Companion provides expanded options for creating, developing, and equipping characters, offering even more ways to personalize and customize the heroes of any modern-world d20 game. Modern Player's Companion includes seven new starting occupations, including Bohemian and Tribal; nine class combinations that illustrate how to flesh out a character concept by multiclassing with just the six basic classes; eight new advanced classes, such as the Enforcer and the Survivalist; twenty-five feats including Cross-Training, Poker Face, and Sidestep; new equipment, from duffle bags to laser pointers, along with equipment packages that enable heroes to quickly gear up for action; and a whole lot more. Give your d20 character the edge with the Modern Player's Companion.
Customer Reviews:
Patches the holes in D20 Modern.......2005-08-08
There's nothing quite like witnessing the D20 license used by authors who contributed to rulebooks printed by WOTC (Monte Cook comes to mind). You get that impression that the original creators were frustrated by editors who prevented them from implementing their idealized version of the game. Thus, their D20 products are ultimately their ideas, often raw. Sort of a director's cut of "what I would do if *I* ran WOTC.
So here we have Stan! and The Game Mechanics putting together their own book as a supplement to D20 Modern. It's unfair to compare just about anyone else's work to this book, because a lot of these folks worked on the D20 Modern Core Rulebook to begin with. When you've got all that talent, odds are that the book will be good.
LIKED: The Modern Player's Companion does not disappoint. It has fantastic art and layout along with clean, readable text. We get a smattering of occupations and then we hop to the first of many gems in the book: class combos vs. advanced classes. See, the point of D20 Modern's class system is that it's not supposed to be thought of as a class system. Rather, it's a system to regulate power increases. Thus, you don't join a lawyer advanced class, you join a combination of Smart, Charismatic, and Dedicated levels so the lawyer can do what he does best...sue the pants off of people. It's a subtle concept but an important one, perfectly illustrated in this book.
Feats and equipment round out characters. Most of it isn't innovative, but was so common that you didn't notice it was missing from D20 Modern. Which is why anyone who plays D20 Modern needs this book.
It also includes equipment packages, an excellent means of kitting out a character without having to go shopping each time (a godsend for GMs!).
DISLIKED: The advanced classes cover the gamut of archetypes, from the Survivalist to the Profiler, Enforcer to the awkwardly named Opinion Maker. "Politico" would have been better, but it was used as the title of an occupation.
But that's a minor quibble. Really, the only problem with The Modern Player's Companion is that it covers a lot of generic territory. It's not going to overwhelm you with crazy new feats or weird powers. The book is meant to patch the holes in D20 Modern, and in that respect it achieves its goal. But then, what did you expect from the people who wrote the original game?

guerrilla PR: how you can wage an effective publicity campaign.......2005-09-30
even though his book was written (1993) before the internet was a way to communicate and advertise, this book shows that determination and follow through are very important in public relations.
Informative.......2005-06-17
I think that Guerrilla PR is a great book for anybody that is looking to learn about the field of public relations. I am relatively new to the field, and I feel like I learned a great deal from reading this book. The author writes in a very comfortable style, as if he is having a conversation with you. There is a lot of warmth and humor in the writing. And my favorite thing about the book is how the author always made sure to give examples in order to further illustrate what he is talking about. If you are curious at all about the world of PR, this book is a great place to start.
Good Travel Reading.......2005-01-22
I'm scared to fly so I took this book on a plane with me when I had to visit my grandparents in Winnipeg. It immediately transported me to the wonderful and magical world of public relations!!! I soon forgot I was on a plane, and suddenly I felt like Colin Farrell's character in Phone Booth--you know where that guy held him hostage on the phone to make him repent for his sleazy ways. I especially like how the guy called Farrell out for claiming to be this big shot PR guy with all these connections, but actually he had no real connections at all. I also visited the wonderful olden days of PR like in the movie Sweet Smell Of Success where Tony Curtis is the PR man. Whenever he walks into a room, people cannot hide their contempt for this scumbag. I like at the end how he ends up getting the stuffing kicked out of him.
I arrived in Winnipeg safely all thanks to Michael Levine and his book about what sleazy liars PR people are.
Contradicts Most Teachings.......2004-04-26
I have taken several courses on public relations in school. Most of what Michael Levine teaches is totally opposite of what several of my professors have taught me. In all fairness to Levine, perhaps the practices described in his book were sufficient way back when the book was written, but the world has changed quite a bit since then, and the pace of Public Relations has changed along with it. I understand he wrote a follow-up book called Guerrilla PR Wired which pertains to using the internet as a valuable PR tool, but I know that using his outdated techniques, even with the help of the internet, would still not be the least bit helpful. I certainly would not recommend this book to other students who are preparing for a career in the field of PR.
Down-to-Earth, Tell-it-Like-it-is Book on PR and Publicity.......2004-04-20
Michael Levine tells it like it is in how to put together a PR and Publicity Campaign. He knows what he talks about - no theory here. Any business or person seeking to promote themselve through the power of the media - should grab this book - ASAP!
I have dozens of books and tapes on PR and Publicity and this is at the top - my main reference when I want to put together a PR campaign for my business. All I know is that it works - hands-down.
