Helpful.......2002-05-25
I liked the book, it was helpful as a source of inspiration for a new business card I was having designed. I will say that based on the pages in the magazine each month, they could have come with with a MUCH better selection of cards for originalities sake. But nonetheless, I am sure the proprietors of the establishments represented (you will recognize some of them) are pleased. I liked the book and founf it useful for my project, but as a lover of all things paper, I will stick to the pages of the magazine for really striking cards.

Portrait Photography.......2004-09-30
It's no secret that I am a fan of the Lark Book's Digital Photography series. This is the third book in my library and the second one that I've reviewed for AAUG. The title of this book is a little deceiving. When we think of portrait photography, most of us think of a messy little room with a cranky old photographer or a makeshift studio with toys and stuffed animals and a woman with fake cheerfulness trying to get your munchkin to smile. In the introduction, Michael Frreeman explains that portrait photography is expanded to mean the relationship between the photgrapher and the subject who is saying, "This is who I am, and this is what I look like." Portrait photography encompasses everything that is involved in capturing the essence of the moment so it is preserved forever. The one constant is that portrait photography includes a subject which is almost always people, and, in some instances, a pet.
"Portrait Photography" is divided into three chapters: People Posed, Daily Life and Events and Occasions. Within each chapter are topics that include photo composition tips, equipment and software, post-production techniques and special projects. Each topic is usually a two-page spread which features two or more digital photographs. The main text explains how to create the best possible photograph. Then there is a checklist or hints and tips about the topic to assist the reader. The tips are concise and very helpful. I was thinking of a way to create little laminated cheat sheets that I could slip into my camera bag so I could pull it out for reference at the right time. The captions that accompany each photograph carefully explains both the composition and the background of the shot. To add a depth of realism, a few photographs are a little lacking in quality by being a bit blurry or washed out. I didn't see it as a fault but rather it helped reconfirm for me that not every photo is perfect and even the experts are human. Every photo in this book is almost an essay in itself: beautifully composed and full of life and meaning. I believe the author, Michael Freeman took most, if not all, of the photos and he is a phenomenal artist.
One of my favorite topics appeared at the end of the book and it is on picture essays. Freeman provides three good examples. The picture essay is a series of photographs that tell a story and it could be about an event or a series of pictures that tell a story. It reminded me of the Life and Look magazines I remember when I was a child that had beautiful photographs about people or events. Freeman's examples gave me inspiration and guidance to create an effective photo essay myself.
The one striking feature of all Lark Books is the quality of their products. From the accurately produced photographs, to the attractive page layout, to the heavyweight glossy paper, Lark Books are a notch above most other books. The quality of the photographs almost matches expensive coffee table photo books.
If you are serious about using your digital camera to create quality photographs, this book should be added to your library. Too many people with digital cameras take their cameras for granted and crank out endless photos lacking in quality. "Portrait Photography" will help take you to the next level of using your digital camera and equipment to create photos that truly tell a story and which will awe your family and friends.
His usual style.......2004-05-27
Most of his books have better than average images for illustrations, albeit they are mostly too small.
My biggest dissatisfaction with most of his books is the content: they tend to be shallow and nothing very inspiring. Most of the stuffs he is printing in all of his books have been talked about elsewhere and hardly anything is new.

Trickster Makes This World: Mischief, Myth, and Art
ASIN: 0812234359 |
Customer Reviews:
Great scholarship, great reading!.......2006-11-05
This lavishly illustrated study of the female trickster in US culture links Mae West to Catwoman, Lorelei Lee to Lucy, and Rosie the Riveter to Rosanne. The balance between literature and popular culture is perfectly negotiated throughout this chronologically arranged study of how female tricksters "perform [...] the cultural work of transforming the feminine into the human." Highly readable and thoroughly entertaining, Madcaps is a wonderful introduction to and overview of a heretofore neglected subject.
A detailed and revealing study.......2001-03-16
While this was originally written as a doctoral thesis, it is by no means a dry, academic work. It is well-written, engaging and entertaining, as Landay looks at the existence and role of the female trickster. Like more traditional tricksters of folklore (Brer Rabbit, Anansi) and pop culture (Bugs Bunny), the female trickster in American culture plays with convention, uses disguise to cross boundaries and walks the line between accepted values and subversive behavior. Lucille Ball was such a woman; so were "It" girl Clara Bow, Mae West and Marlene Dietrich, and their existence enriched and to some extent changed society. Well-researched and highly illuminating, this is a great book for anyone looking for a different take on the "women-in-pop-culture" issue.

Book Description
If you thought How to Stay Awake During Anybody's Second Movement was the least bit funny, you'll die laughing at David Walden's second volume, tackling the last musical taboo--the subject that virtually no one has dared expose to the public eye--namely, Modern Serious Music of the 20th Century.
Customer Reviews:
This Book is Not About Music.......2007-05-19
About 70% of this book is inane prattling about the real or imagined townsfolk of Chezlee, Ontario. About 20% of the book is so incoherent that it defies categorization, and roughly 10% brings up the subject of music.
Prattlings about Chezlee? The only way I can explain it to you is to give you a typical excerpt from the book:
"It was a lovely sun-drenched summer's day, and I had just finished cleaning the stalls of Cliff and Clarice, our beloved bovines, and that of a guest nag we were tending while the McBrides were at a chicken-plucking convention in Dayton, Ohio. I had gathered a small pail of the combined bovine and equine droppings that I was intending to spread on the rutabagas and Savoy cabbage patch to aid in their growth, hoping for prizes in the Chezlee, Ont. Parsnips and Arts Fest Produce Contest."
About every 5 or 10 pages the author digresses from his schizophrenic mutterings to mention a composer. He tells us in one small paragraph that Maurice Ravel is a great composer, and we should rush out and buy some of his "stuff." Which Ravelian "stuff" does he recommend? Nada; we are left to make the decision. He does spend more time on Debussy, but the message that he mainly wants to get across about that composer is that he is thought to be a direct descendent of a liaison between Jesus and Mary Magdalene. That's right; that's what he says.
Is there some way that he could make this book even more annoying than what I have so far described? Yes, there is. He decides to capitalize about every 86th word or phrase at random.
If you are reading this review it is undoubtedly because you, like me, have some interest in modern classical music. Well I am sorry to tell you, but this "book" is about something else. It is probably just a long essay the author wrote while killing time on the locked ward of the Chezlee Hospital for the Hopelessly Deranged.

Most people visualize a book as the standard set of text-laden pages bound between two covers. But this traditional format is simply one of the nearly infinite possibilities once an artist gets ahold of the concept, as Alisa Golden ably demonstrates in Unique Handmade Books. Against the backdrop of her own work as well as the contributions of 13 other book artists, Golden explores various approaches to creating one-of-a-kind handmade "books."
Dozens of project instructions teach you how to make assorted book forms, including accordion-fold constructions, pocket pages, simple binding methods, and more unusual forms such as tunnel books (layered boxed scenes resembling dioramas) or Jacob's ladder books. You'll also learn less tangible skills such as how to find ideas, play with design concepts, and make a collaborative book. Since these creations are often more like mixed-media sculpture than volumes to be read, the projects serve more as a general guide for exploring our own creativity than making exact duplicates of Golden's offerings. Experienced crafters, and even very adventurous beginners, will find a wealth of inspiration here. --Amy Handy
Book Description
Every one of these astonishing and original projects will redefine your idea of how a book should look. No simple rectangles here, but one-of-a-kind volumes folded like an accordion; shaped and themed, with windows and envelopes; thickly sewn and decoratively woven; dressed in "wedding netting" for a bride; and made out of paper bags. There are even containers for protection and display, and they can enhance the meaning of a book's text. Along with advice on paints, inks, stencils, transfers, and distressed covers, you'll find fun ways to make collaborative books, including ones to create with a child.
Customer Reviews:
Another excellent title from Alisa Golden.......2006-08-05
I own and use in the classroom Golden's previous title, "Creating Handmade Books" already. For my art students who are interested in exploring beyond those bookforms in the earlier title, "Unique Handmade Books" provides me with an excellent companion book. Both titles are clearly written and beautifully reproduced, with lots of wonderful photographs of diverse bookform designs. I can't keep my students out of the books!
***Experiment making your own handmade books***.......2004-03-04
Let me begin by saying that I picked this book as a suppliment to my other craft projects. It's a delight, however, I mustn't mislead you, I don't have any other related books on the subject of book binding or creating, and even though I'm an artist, I didn't take a class on the subject in college. There may indeed be more comprehensive texts out there, though I have not gone looking for them.
That said, this is an excellent book in the sense that it contains projects which are unique, challenging, and very creative. The examples (all full color photography accompanied by illustrations in the directions) are VERY diverse and dramatic. Ribbons, fortunes from fortune cookies, paper grocery bags, playing cards, plastic, stamps, and leather are just a few of the funky materials that make their way into becoming part of the books. Furthermore, while some of the books are indeed sewn spines, others are accordian folds, scrolls, quilts, Jacob's ladder, pockets, card file, and exquisite corpse styles. There is a little something for everyone in here.
Much of what you'll find in the Unique Handmade Books, is what you put into it. Again, it is about projects - getting creative with papers, glues, some acryllic paints if you so choose, and the extent to which you feel good about variations that are sewn bindings, or other styles. This is also about YOU writing, drawing, and collaging what goes inside - which is at least half the fun. Take a look inside if you get a chance, as you'll see, the possibilities are thrilling.
Inspiring!!.......2003-03-20
This is a beautiful book, abundant with projects that are stimulating and easy to follow. What a pleasure to leaf through--so many inventive techniques and materials. I admire the craftsmanship of the examples and simultaneously plan my own versions of them. This book is inspiring--not intimidating.
I'm sure glad I ignored the negative comment noted here and took a chance. It's a wonderful resource!
Another excellent manual from Alisa Golden.......2002-11-19
Ms. Golden's previous book, "Creating Handmade Books", was my introduction to bookbinding. I made my first books using her directions, so it was with great anticipation that I opened the cover of her latest book. I was not disappointed in the least here. Again, the book is chock full of both traditional and non-traditional binding methods. There are some really clever ideas in here, and the artists books she shares are wonderful. I spent an hour just looking at the pictures. I have made several books using the directions in "Unique Handmade Books" and had no problems following them and was very satisfied with the results. I own 20+ books on bookbinding, and this book will land on the top of the pile to be referred to again and again. This title is of special interest to those who create artists books - it is not about fine binding, it is about creating beautiful, original, "unique handmade books" and it is indispensible to anyone interesting in creating just that.
How very disappointing!.......2002-08-07
What a disappointment! Technical skills are sorely lacking here with poorly stitched books, flat colors, mitered corners that are not done well and photographs that do not reveal the clarity and light necessary for showing these three dimensional items. I see no types of books in this text that have not been detailed with better examples in numerous other texts....a waste of money and time.

Customer Reviews:
Clear and careful instructions for some great projects.......2007-05-29
I own several books on book-binding, but I'm still struggling with case-bound books - so when an artist whom I respect recommended this one, I ordered it. I found that the instructions are very clear and well-illustrated; and that each project builds on the previous one. Each project contains lists of specific measurements and supplies, but the author also provides formulas for measuring, so that if you have some book-binding experience you can immediately modify the projects according to your own ideas. I felt so excited by the projects and the clarity of instructions that I went on a book-making binge, and made 5 of the projects in 3 days (including a very nice case-bound book). I haven't made any of the boxes yet, but I can see that the instructions for them are as clear as those for the books. I highly recommend this book.
Creating Books & Boxes: Fun and Unique Approaches to Handmade Structures.......2007-05-13
Paper of all kinds is easy to come by. This book teaches you how to create useful and decorative items from different papers. The author's handmade structures are well illustrated, and the directions are easy to follow. Once taught and inspired the sky's your only limit. Happy Papering!!!!!
Informative and instructive.......2007-03-05
It is an excellent introduction to book arts and box-making craft, and yet it contains information that are helpful to readers with more advanced skills. I have taken several classes from this author, and this book helps me to remember all the important techniques/principles that I learned from his classes: gluing, sewing, cutting, and figuring out the sizes of the paper/chipboard needed to create a specific book or a box. There are 11 book projects - four are of accordian type, one is of photo frame type, and the rest are bound type. And there are four box projects - one is three sided and the rest are four-sided, some with dividers. One of them requires no glue. Each project in this book contains a list of formulas and materials, thus making it easier for me to plan. The directions and diagrams are very readable and easy to follow. The surface treatment section is a nice and brief introduction to altering the appearance of the paper surface - four different techniques are presented. The gallery section contains many beautiful examples of how the basic techniques covered are used in different ways by various artists. It is truly a very informative, instructive, and inspiring book.
Book is as good as taking a class..........2007-01-27
I have taken classes with Ben, and his book is written so clearly and easily followed that it is almost like he is standing next to you, going over it step by step. Illustrations are very helpful but his 'real' work is even better. There is such a variety of projects in this book that I know I will keep it as a handy reference.
Very clear, easy-to-follow instructions for beautiful books and boxes.......2007-01-08
I'll preface this review by saying that I am not a crafty person. But every now and then, I like to challenge myself with an artistic project. After a few too many crooked scarves, I decided to try my hand at origami-style boxes, which is when I ran across "Creating Books and Boxes." This book strikes the perfect balance, whether you're a beginner like me or a serious artist with skills, offering simple, clear instructions, detailed illustrations and gorgeous book-binding, rubber stamping and box-creating projects. It covers so many different types of handmade paper structures--hand-stitched books, photo frames, accordion books, journals, container boxes, round boxes. What I really loved about "Creating Books and Boxes" is how approachable, and yet professional, the instructions are--from the techniques and terms to the materials (adhesives, tools, paper) you need. If you like making gifts with a personal touch, if you're into scrapbooking but hate the cheesy, mass-produced books sold in stores, if you want to make your own journals, this is the quintessential guide to doing it all, and then some. It's also an ideal gift for that hard-to-buy-for DIYer in your life.

Customer Reviews:
No university/college should use this.............2007-08-19
I had to use this book for an online course while earning my bachelor's degree. This book was horrible. This group of 3 authors did not do a good job. The ideas and points did not run smoothly together from one point to another. It seems like the 3 authors did not work very close together to make sure their ideas connected and related directly with each other's ideas. It was as if the authors went from talking about point A, skipping all the way to point F, then going to point C, then back to point F, etc. etc. Their ideas did not flow in an understandable sequence. I also agree about the examples. The examples were no help and they were not thorough examples of material that you would run into the real-world. The examples needed much more details in them.
Huge waste of money.......2007-07-06
Horngren makes a notoriously dry subject even worse. It is filled with long winded verse and practically devoid of dynamic examples. Accounting is something that 'works' and can be worked out. It's best learned when applied to real world situations...this book aims to have you memorize boring definitions and then support those definitions with scarce examples. Even our professor said he's been lobbying to get this book out of my school's curriculum...too bad that didn't happen BEFORE I came along.
Introduction to Management Accounting.......2007-02-19
This book was not at all what I expected and was not very useful.
Introdution to management accouting.......2006-09-02
Very good. Cover is a little worn. Some pages have been written by pencil.
Used in MBA program - Intro to Accounting.......2006-04-06
I have had experience with accounting and found this book to be fairly basic. However, if you are a beginner with no knowledge of accounting, this is a good textbook. I read one of the other reviews about how there is a bunch of useless junk on each page and while this is partially true, it would be UNBEARABLE to read if there wasn't this so called "junk" on every page. Overall a good textbook that I will keep around as a reference for accounting basics.
