There are few computer tools that have the longevity and staying power of Adobe's Photoshop, and version 7 offers improvements, fixes, and new features that any digital photographer can appreciate. Adobe Photoshop 7 for Photographers places these new features in perspective and teaches their use, plus a whole lot more.

Approaching Photoshop from the viewpoint of a photographer, the author places much emphasis on tools for digital image acquisition, color correction, color management, and retouching. Color management--the science, art, and voodoo of synchronizing Photoshop, the computer monitor, and the printer for consistent color reproduction--is discussed in detail. Any Photoshop veteran would agree that this is one of the most important and difficult parts of any system to configure, but Evening handles it gracefully and patiently.

This book is not written for the experienced Photoshop user, however; it's clearly aimed at the experienced photographer who may or may not have Photoshop experience. Toward that end, there are chapters that detail the nuances of file management, scanning or uploading pictures into the computer, the interface, and configuring Photoshop for optimal use.

Even those with Photoshop experience should flip through every page, though. The book includes something informative on virtually every topic and tool, and to turn a page without glancing through each paragraph would mean letting important information pass by without a glance. No shortcuts were taken either with the enclosed CD-ROM, which includes 14 QuickTime movies demonstrating techniques taught in the book. Also on the CD-ROM are PDF files of some of the techniques, along with the source images used for many of the projects.

Any professional photographer or digital image artist can find countless tips, tricks, and techniques throughout, making Adobe Photoshop 7 for Photographers an important asset and a valuable addition to a library. --Mike Caputo

              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Where have all the good editors gone?.......2004-01-23

I purchased "Adobe Photoshop 7 for Photographers" specifically for instructions on improving my photography processing skills. I have experience developing film and paper-based photos, providing me with comprehension of photo lab techniques as well as the associated dark-room lingo. Combining this background with an intermediate-level understanding of Photoshop, I was quite keen on diving into this book.

While most of the content I found to be very useful, in many instances the editing was so poor that the book suddenly resembled a cloak-and-dagger mystery. Quality of instruction, it would appear, is sacrificed for speed of publication (admittedly, not uncommon in application books these days). If one combines the print instructions with the enclosed CD, the "Aha!" moment comes across much more easily; however, there just aren't enough of these print/CD combinations available for the reader's enjoyment. It's a real missed opportunity. What's more, (I have no idea if this is true or false) it appears that the publisher of the book and the publisher of the CD might be from two completely different companies; no doubt separated by the Atlantic Ocean. I must agree with a previous comment on the CD content: The narration speeds along at lightning pace, often ahead of the visuals, while the poor cursor has difficulty just keeping up (even on a fast G4 with all content saved on hard drive). It's nearly impossible to follow the narrator's cursor, unless one knows Photoshop well enough to listen for audio clues.

Still, there's a lot to be had between the covers, and it's worth scrumming through the content despite the bruising editorial.

5 out of 5 stars Great production values; extremely practical advice.......2003-12-05

This is not a large book for the price, but the production values are excellent. All illustrations are in color and at high resolution, so you can actually see even the most subtle effects of image manipulation.

This is not a beginner's book, and it is not for those who wish to use Photoshop principally for painting or drawing. Rather, it is just what the title says--"for photographers." If you already know the basics of Photoshop and the elements of photography, I think you will find this is the most valuable Photoshop book in print today.

The book is divided into short (2 to 4-page) sections, each dealing with a common photographic problem (too dark, too much highlight, eyebrows too thin, waist too thick, facial blemishes and wrinkles, red eye, yellow teeth, color casts--you name it) and step-by-step remedies for each, including specific numerical values to plug into dialog boxes for filters. The book is useful for all sorts of photography, but I have found it most useful for pictures of people. The author apparently has extensive experience in fashion photography; his techniques are especially strong in the area of making people look better than in real life without producing any perception of artificiality.

              5 out of 5 stars absolutely brilliant.......2003-11-14

No, this book isn't quite for beginners - I wouldn't use it as a photoshop primer. However, I am also not a professional photographer or photoshopper - and I have gotten so much from this book.

Within 5 minutes of picking up this book I had taken a color digital photograph and made it look like it was shot on black and white infrared film.

It took me a similar amount of time to make color images look like I had used an alternative process to develop the film.

The steps for just about anything you'd want to do creatively are short, easy to follow, and are accompanied by excellent demonstration photos. The book is in full color, which is extremely important given the subject matter.

I highly recommend this book to anybody who wants to take digital photographs and do artistic and wonderful things with them.

1 out of 5 stars Adobe Photoshop 7.0 for Photographers.......2003-10-26

If you are completely familiar with other Photoshop versions and are a professional photographer this book could possibly be of some use. For an amateur photographer just getting into digital photography this book is not for you. There is a lot of fluff and not much body to the book which makes it hard reading. The CD Tutorial is a joke. The dialog speeds along with a small black cursor that can not be located most of the time making it almost impossible to follow..

              5 out of 5 stars Awsome Book.......2003-08-16

Mr. Evening does a great job of getting you into the digital world. The beginning of the book explains the color spaces and what this means in terms of what you see on your screen and what comes out on print. He then goes into Photoshop itself and teaches you everything you need to know to masterfully play with your images.

In Mental Hygiene, Ken Smith takes a look at the endearingly gooney safety and "social guidance" films produced for classroom use between World War II and the early 1970s. Everything from dating to drugs to auto safety is covered in this lovingly compiled book. Smith even takes the time to discuss the stylistic differences of the various studios and analyze the peculiar obsessions of their auteurs. Though its subjects are bizarre ("Healthy Feet"), corny ("Teen Togs"), and often ineptly made ("Red Nightmare"), Mental Hygiene is no mere excuse to mock these films. Smith is careful to note bursts of good (or at least interesting) filmmaking and makes a convincing case that in their day these classroom movies were considered the new wave of liberal education. The films, catalogued at the end of the book, teeter between unintentionally hilarious ("More Dates for Kay") and just flat-out disturbing ("Boys Beware"). Most take the stance that teens who drive too fast or don't mind their manners deserve their horrific fates. For example, the auto safety films tend toward subtly titled epics like "Mechanized Death" and "Wheels of Tragedy," while the "image building" shorts mercilessly taunt their misfit protagonists. ("It's a little late for tears, isn't it, Barbara?") A thoroughly enjoyable read, Mental Hygiene is both funny and informative, but not so informative that it will put you to sleep in class. --Ali Davis

                    Book Description

Between 1945 and 1970, millions of public school students were subjected to hundreds of films designed to keep them on the straight and narrow. These cultural gems "enlightened" the nation's youth about proper dating, good table manners, the evils of dope, and what happens to teens who drive too fast on prom night.
Author Ken Smith embarked on an exhaustive nine-year search for these obscure educational films. The result is this fascinating stroll down memory lane. Smith has gathered titles such as Worth Waiting For, Posture Pals, Last Date, Highways of Agony, and Soapy the Germ Fighter. Included are interviews with writers and directors, detailed descriptions of these unintentionally hilarious films, and commentary on the social engineering behind them.

                    5 out of 5 stars Spookily Hilarious.......2004-10-10

Ken Smith has tapped into a vein in the American cadaver with this clever and respectful survey of one of the most freakishly commonsensical forms of propaganda ever conceived. The mental hygeine film as a genre carved out a niche in the american psyche so clandestinely, with such subtlety, that until you read Smiths book you forget you ever encountered them.

                    But you did.

The implications of the mental hygeine movement, as personified in its perveyors so nicely profiled in this volume, are astounding and far-reaching. Certainly the lessons of 25 years of these films and their power were not lost on the moguls who now control the airwaves, such as Fox's Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes, a thought that chills me to the bone, personally.

Smith has exhaustively researched his topic, but susinctly captured the nuances and paradoxes that frame it. Mental hygeine was a well-intentioned movement absolutely shot through with cold war era-flavored suspiscion, fear, and conformity. Smith lifts these elements to the surface and touches on them just long enough to deconstruct them briefly, letting the reader connect most of the dots.

My only regret with this book is that Smith is satisfied simply to create a sketch of the genre. I found myself wishing for information on the films' impact on the generations who watched them, the classrooms of subsequent generations, and public school curricula in general. Many of the teens from the 50's and 60's who sat blank-faced, staring at these films in schoolhouses across this country are now running it. I should like to know where are that fear and conformity went...

5 out of 5 stars "A Perfectly Delightful Way To Learn".......2003-10-03

"Mental Hygiene" presents the history of Classroom films in a way that doesn't make fun of the films, but still makes enjoyable reading.
I didn't have to view these films, but my Mother does remember them and had quite a laugh when glancing through this book, as she was in school when films like 'Duck and Cover', and 'Good Grooming For Girls' were typical Classroom fare.
It's facinating to read about all of these film makers, who were, in all seriousness, trying to mold the youth of the day.
It's interesting to see that one reviewer here was a bit shocked by some of the photos from the more graphic films, such as the films that showed the symptoms of syphillis. I found them a little surprising, too. However, such pictures were being shown in Junior High and High School classrooms during the 1950's and 60's with little or no outcry from parents. I'm sure seeing those images on the screen really spooked some students and the images may have stuck into adulthood!
It is now possible to view many of the films described in this book, thanks to a collection called 'Educational Archives'. I found out about this book from a note in that line of DVDs. Just do a search here on Amazon for 'Educational Archives' and you'll find 6 DVD volumes (as of September, 2003) of films like those described in this book along with several industrial training films and religious films. More DVDs are forthcoming.
This book makes a fine companion to those DVDs and is a great history of a genre of films that has not been well documented elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great but I wish there was more........2002-10-17

As a connoisseur of vintage mental hygiene films, and driver's ed. scare films in particular, I found the back story about how these films got made both fascinating and engrossing. I especially enjoyed reading the story behind "Signal 30" (now widely considered to be the "Citizen Kane" of the driver's ed scare film genre). The only shortcoming of the book is that I wish there were reviews of more films. The author is upfront about not purporting to catalogue and review all such films (there are literally thousands of them) but I would have liked to see a more comprehensive treatment of the subject in order to help me track down the obscure gems still locked away in some high school janitor's broom closet. Could it be that I smell a sequel: "Mental Hygiene - Volume II???"

                    5 out of 5 stars They didn't laugh.......2002-04-04

As a dyed-in-the-wool fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000, a TV show that once featured many of the films discussed in 'Mental Hygiene,' I approached this book as a catalog of MST could-have-beens. Turns out it is that (especially in the thumbnail reviews of the films themselves), but it's also much more.

Today, in our enlightened 'post-modern' era, it's easy to laugh at the staid and conformist world these films both illustrate and reinforce. Yet, as Ken Smith argues, the filmmakers didn't set out either to produce comedy or to crush their children's souls. 'The people responsible for these films were driven by a sincere desire to guide young people toward behavior that they felt would make them happy. It's no fun to be lonely or physically unattractive. Nor is it enjoyable to be a heroin addict or have your face torn off in a car wreck' (p. 13).

Moreover, 'they [the films] were made by some of the most liberal and progressive-minded people of their time. Their goal was noble: to help children become well adjusted, happy, and independent (within limits). The films look corny and manipulative to us today, but not because the people who made them were evil and stupid' (p. 30).

All this to say, this book's not only entertaining, but is also an insightful sociological study of the attitudes and ideals of these films' era. The section on the genres of films is fascinating, though I also found myself nauseated by some filmmakers' practice of showing actual, bloody, mangled accident victims in some highway safety movies. That one is a particularly sobering chapter.

Once that's out of the way, though, it's on to the rollicking fun as Smith deconstructs 250 or so of these films, including several recognizable to any MSTie. Here, for example, is part of his description of 'Developing Your Character,' a 1950 offering from mental-hygiene powerhouse Coronet Films: 'Joe, a squinty-eyed, perpetually smiling future politician, "likes people," Bob explains. He "wants to be friends with everybody" and is "sincere and real." Joe quickly becomes the leader of a gang of happy teens who are all slavishly devoted to his welfare. With their help, he places first in the statewide Junior Citizenship essay contest -- and wins a trip to the state capital for a week. "Actually, we all won," says Bob, exhibiting the team spirit that will make him a fine, faceless corporate drone in the years to come' (p. 137).

I'm glad to have read the book, and even more thankful I never had to sit through these films in school.

2 out of 5 stars text informative, gross out pics gratuitous.......2002-02-19

I enjoyed reading about the different small film studios that produced these films (I loved watching them getting riffed on MST3K). I find Ken Smith's writing more informative than humorous. I also liked all the stills from the "acted" productions--some really goofy expressions.
However, I had a huge problem with the disgusting photos of mangled accident victims, close ups of eye surgery, etc. This is light reading--including those pictures is just exploitative. The accident safety films could've been discussed without photos so graphic.

                      Book Description

Drawing upon the past two decades of burgeoning literature in philosophy of music, this study offers a comprehensive, critical analysis of what is entailed in performance interpretation. It argues that integrity and other virtues offset the harm that virtuosity and rigid historical authenticity can impose on the perceptive judgment required of excellent musical interpretation. Proposed are challenging and provocative reassessments of the appropriate roles for virtuosity and historical authenticity in musical performance. Acknowledging the competitive ethos of the contemporary music scene, it details the kind of character a performer needs to develop in order to withstand those pressures and to achieve interpretive excellence. Performers are encouraged to examine and explore the ethical dimension of their art against their responsibilities to the diverse patrons they serve. Professional and student performers and instructors will appreciate this practical discussion of the ethical challenges performers confront when interpreting musical works. The ethical discourse applies to instrumental performance studies, the history and theory of music, general music pedagogy, and philosophy of music courses.

Litany of the Tribes is a compilation of the now out of print Tribebooks Silverfang, Stargazers, Uktena, and Wendigo. The Tribebooks are helpful for building better thought out and fleshed out characters for your Werewolf games. I particulary found this one useful as I tend to play a Silverfang or a Wendigo more often than other tribes.

Once again White Wolf reprints information from previous books without giving credit to the orginal authors like they should. For instance, each tribe book was written by different individuals. They don't care to mention this here, but then they were only guns-for-hire freelance writers that don't get any royalites anyway. I hope that everyone that enjoys these books understand that the people that orginally wrote the stuff really cared about what they were writing, because they surely aren't getting the credit they deserve for the work that they did for a good game system that they helped to nurture.

If you play any of these tribes this book is a must... if you don't, it is still a good buy.

This book was first published in 1962. But the lessons are still as valuable and as valid today as when first published. This is a great manual on how to write advertisement.

Schwab is considered one on the legends in print advertising. He writing is easy to read, well organized and simple to understand.

This is a how to manual. Mr. Schwab starts with the importance of the headline - if you can't get people to read your ad it has no chance of getting people to buy the product. He gives you step by step instruction for writing good headlines.

From headlines, he goes on to teach about attention getting layout, showing people the advantages of your product, proving your claims, social proof and asking for action.

Schwab talks about the copy length, subheads and AIDA (Attention, Interest, Desire and Action).

At the end of each chapter is a quiz on the material presented.

If you want an excellent book on advertising and marketing, this is certainly one. If you have absolutely no experience, you will learn all the basics and concepts from this one book. If you consider yourself knowledgable, this is a great refresher course.

Well worth reading if your job involves advertising and marketing.

I've read dozens of books on advertising. This is one of the best. Actual examples of Direct Mail ads, comparisons between 2 test ads, and posted results add to the value. There are even Headlines you can use as Templates for your own Headlines. Books by Victor Schwab & John Caples are the Classics I would recomend. Certainly worth the investment.

This book, though it seems a little bit old in writing style, is very good value. It starts with a list of the 100 best headlines ever written and explains why they were so. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book!
This book goes into "why" not just "how" so you can learn how to do it yourself.
You'll find chapters on understanding the emotional triggers, using facts, using proof, getting people to take action and much more.
The examples are incredible, all the way through the whole book. Every point made comes with an example that proves the point.
Its not quite a Tested Advertising Book however as a book to put on your shelf that you'll open and read many times I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Why You Must Read This Book!.......2004-06-05

Don't miss this diamond in the rough!

This is a very overlooked book which touches on a little bit of everything, from soup-to-nuts, about writing copy and placing ads.

I'm not sure why it isn't mentioned as much as the more well-known classics like the Ogilvy and Hopkins material is, because it should be.

Although the book was written in 1962, it reads like it was written earlier -- perhaps that's why it's often not cited by the greats.

Buy it today. You won't be sorry.

Even if you're already a professional, the book will serve you well to stir up some good ideas -- maybe even for that promotion you're working on right now!

5 out of 5 stars Nice book on the basics.......2004-02-09

From headlines to body copy, this little book does a wonderful job of explaining the basics of writing a good advertisement.

Written in 1964, the content is a bit dated in its references but the basics of good copywriting haven't changed. So this book is still relevant for all of us who want to write better ads and apply the techniques necessary to bring in a sale.

                        Highly recommended.
