5 out of 5 stars 101 Trees Of Indiana.......2007-09-28

A very functional field guide that covers basic tree information in an easy to follow format. The keys, colored pictures and descriptions are great.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Field Guide.......2007-08-10

This field guide is clear, well written and easy to use. It includes a step by step process to help you identify the type of tree you have in your woods. The pictures are accurate, not some artistic rendition or sample of the PERFECT specimen. You'll enjoy using this guide.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2007-01-04

Very useful information in an accessible format. Excellent photos of multiple identification characteristics for each tree.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent identification guide.......2005-09-29

I bought this book to learn the species of the trees in our area of southern Indiana. It does this job well.

There are usually 4-6 excellent color photographs for each entry, showing bark, leaves, stems, seeds, flowers, fruit, and overall shape of the tree. (Not all items are shown for all trees.) The most useful part of the book, however, are the identification keys. Each key uses an either/or question to lead you onward towards ultimate identification.

Example:
19. Leaves compound: Go to question 20
Leaves simple: Got to question 33

The next question leads you to succeeding questions until you finally get to the name of a genus (such as Quercus for the various oaks). Looking up the genus in the index will send you to the page, or pages, for all trees in that genus. The two-page descriptions for each individual species should allow you to identify the tree.

Unless you remember your high school biology you will need to review the introduction, where you will get a refresher course on botany as it pertains to naming and identifying trees, but the time spent will be rewarded.

Although the habitat maps are limited to Indiana, this book can still be an excellent reference for those outside the state.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Guide for Trees of Indiana.......2004-06-23

Jackson's book is well written and set forth in a useable format. It has hundreds of color photographs. The book also has multiple illustrations for each tree. I am just a beginner when it comes to tree identification and even I could use the book with few problems. It is well worth the asking price.

        Book Description

A growing number of people are interested in buying property in Morocco with its ancient towns, coastal resorts and snowy peaks. This North African kingdom boasts 1,400 miles of coastline, year-round sunshine and an open invitation to foreign investment and has seen a sharp increase in the numbers of house-buyers from abroad over the last four years.

Buying a House in Morocco is aimed at anyone seriously considering purchasing a property in Morocco to live in permanently, rent out, or transform to a guesthouse. Extensively researched and informatively written, it will give readers a rich insight into what to expect and how to go about fulfilling their dream for a new home.

Morocco offers an enormous range of housing, from the traditional dars and riads of the medina to the villas, new developments and old Moroccan style farmhouses of the countryside. The regional guide also covers the different types of properties to be found in each region, such as:

        >Swiss-style chalets in Ilfrane
        >The riads (grand courtyard homes) in Marrakesh
        >Elaborate Andalusian villas in Tangier
        >Kasbahs in the Draa Valley

In line with the Moroccan government's aim to quadruple tourism to ten million visitors a year by 2010 the appeal to potential home buyers will keep increasing. Approximately $5 billion is being invested in six luxurious coastal resorts including golf courses and luxury villas and on improving the country's infrastructure and accessibility. This spells good news for the letting market, for guesthouse owners and for those who are purchasing homes as an investment.

          Book Description

One winter evening in 1912, in the woods outside of Boynton, Oklahoma, abusive and drunken Harley Day surprises his son John Lee and the neighbor girl Phoebe Tucker in a lovers' tryst. An hour later, when John Lee walks his beloved home, Phoebe's mother, Alafair Tucker, suspects that something is amiss. How could she know her daughter has been involved in a violent confrontation that will make Phoebe and her beau murder suspects?

At supper that evening, over bowls of soupy beans and buttery cornbread, Alafair, her husband Shaw, and their nine lively children, much amused that Phoebe has a boyfriend, discuss the unfortunate Day family. The Days are tormented by their evil father, who beats his wife, mistreats his children, and wastes their money. The mother is helpless, and the eldest daughter, Maggie Ellen, has run away, leaving only 19-year-old John Lee and his 13-year-old sister Naomi to care for the younger children and keep the family from destitution.

Then... well, the old buzzard had it coming!

This Best Unpublished Mystery of 2004 (The Oklahoma Writers' Federation, Inc.) is the first in a new series.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute delight.......2007-10-17

I loved the very real characters in this book. From page two I was so hooked I knew I had one wonderful book in my hands. And it was! I'll be reading all the Alafair Tucker mysteries by Donis Casey. Life is too short to miss out on such an enjoyable experience.

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!.......2007-06-04

I was very pleasantly surprised by the genuine seeming characters and accurate historical (1911) setting of this mystery novel. The book's unique title and Oklahoma setting (where I once lived) attracted me to the book. Farm wife and mother Alafair is a very appealing heroine and though I never quite got all of her nine living children totally straight most of the other minor characters are also well developed. The book has an authentic flavor of rural Oklahoma from the "down home" cooking to the speech patterns. The mystery is solid (though my eyes may have glazed over a bit when it concerned guns) and though I guessed the real murderer well before the book's end I didn't predict the full circumstances surrounding it. I am glad to see Ms. Casey has all ready published the second in the series of Alafair's detective adventures (HORNSWOGGLED) and according to her web site a third will be published this fall.

          5 out of 5 stars A good mystery.......2007-01-04

I usually don't care that much for mystery books but the time period & the title drew me to this book. I wasn't disappointed. I loved the family & all the children. A little romance mixed in makes this book really good. Don't miss the next one by this author with the same family & another good mystery.

5 out of 5 stars enthralling, amusing great read.......2006-07-14

This is a great story. The characters become real immediately. Interesting. Smiles. Real life. Surprising, but reasonable, ending. I first checked this book out from the library, scooping up a bunch of new mystery books. I got a kick out of the title. Liked this one so much, I bought it. Looking forward to this author's subsequent books as well. My mother at first refused to read this book (she didn't like the title). Later, after I'd purchased it, she started to read it, became engrossed in it and hardly put it down until finished.

4 out of 5 stars Love that title !.!.......2006-01-24

The title caught my eye first as did the great cover. It was a good story and had enough twists and turns to make me read to the end. Don't try to guess the ending. It is a surprise.

2 out of 5 stars Not much action.......2005-09-08

If you're looking for nautical adventure in the age of sail, you will be greatly disappointed in this book. It starts out pretty well, and Marryat certainly knows whereof he writes. But the last hundred pages of the book are a real waste, as Marryat seems intent on grinding out a romance novel, presaging not Alexander Kent, but Barbara Cartland. I'm sorry I bought it.

4 out of 5 stars A romance novel with a Royal Navy setting.......2001-06-16

After some preliminaries about the main character's childhood, the novel covers a time period from roughly 1805 to 1816. This corresponds to the time period when the author was a midshipman and lieutenant in the Royal Navy. The story is told in a narrative fashion by the main character, Frank Mildmay, and draws on the author's own experiences.

Readers looking for lots of naval action will be disappointed. Much of the story is on land and deals with Mildmay's romantic involvements. A large part of the "at sea" portion of the story concerns relationships between Mildmay and other individuals. The story often digresses into philosophical thoughts. It is apparent that the author was from an upper class family, and that he looked down on people from the "lower classes" who he considered poorly educated and not up to par, i.e., his social inferiors. The rapid rise of Mildmay from lieutenant to commander was due to influence, which undoubtedly accounted for the author's own rapid promotion.

There is little naval action in the latter part of the novel as Mildmay becomes involved in a triangle between himself, his former mistress, and his future bride. He heads downhill towards self-destruction, and the story becomes a tragedy, but Mildmay is redeemed at the end.

5 out of 5 stars The Granddaddy of all nautical fiction.......1999-03-21

A fascinating book that is hard to set down. Even though written almost 200 years ago, Marryat sets a standard for nautical fiction which others can only attempt to emulate and never surpass.

                    5 out of 5 stars The fountainhead to Aubrey/Maturin, Hornblower & Flashman.......1998-09-23

If you loved the Aubrey/Maturin novels, the Hornblower novels, and the Flashman books, you should read Frederick Marryat. He wrote his seafaring adventure boooks in the 1830's and they are as readable and enjoyable and understandable as if they were written in the 1990's.

Marryat who actually was a hero in the Royal Navy in the Napoleonic Wars spins a great yarn. Great adventures and funny as hell.

                    I recommend them highly.

My father was a gentleman, and a man of considerable property. In my infancy and childhood I was weak and sickly, but the favourite of my parents beyond all my brothers and sisters, because they saw that my mind was far superior to my sickly frame, and feared they should never raise me to manhood; contrary, however, to their expectations, I surmounted all these untoward appearances, and attracted much notice from my liveliness, quickness of repartee, and impudence: qualities which have been of much use to me through life.
