Book Description

The San Andreas Fault is the most famous fault on Earth, running nearly the entire length of western California from just north of the Mexican border to the Mendocino coast. It is a very active tectonic boundary which directly affects the lives of more than twenty million people. The San Andreas Fault has been responsible for shaping much that is beautiful about California, and it also has the capacity to destroy the communities that lie along its course. A Land in Motion provides a geologic tour of the San Andreas Fault in an accessible narrative punctuated with dramatic color illustrations, lively anecdotes, and authoritative information about earthquakes.
As he tours the length of the fault, Michael Collier provides a valuable overview of plate tectonics and gives a geologic history of the San Andreas Fault written for non-scientists. He discusses the evolution of seismology as a science and traces the knowledge that scientists have gleaned about earthquakes and plate tectonics from their work on the San Andreas Fault. Collier looks into human history as well, discussing major earthquakes that have hit the San Andreas, including the famous San Francisco earthquake of 1906, the San Fernando quake of 1971, the Loma Prieta quake of 1989, the Landers quake of 1992, and many lesser temblors.
Collier illustrates his text with magnificent photographs that highlight some of the most beloved landscapes in California. He provides excellent views of the fault throughout the state--of Crystal Springs reservoir near San Francisco, of Pinnacles National Monument east of Monterey, of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Point Reyes National Seashore near San Francisco, and more.
Collier concludes his tour of the San Andreas Fault with a provocative discussion on earthquake prediction versus earthquake planning that all Californians--and all who live where earthquakes occur--will want to read.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A superb book about an awesome phenomenon.......2003-11-13

The San Andreas Fault traverses much of California from the Mexican border to far in the north. Those who have never seen it sometimes picture this tectonic feature as a lurking menace ready to swallow whole towns at a second's whim. This highly accurate book dispels such misimpressions and passes along a good deal of valid scientific information in an interesting, understandable way.

The book shows in colored diagrams and easily read narrative how plate tectonics has worked to create this piece of California that is moving inexorably northwest. The writers clearly explain how and why earthquake-producing stresses build up in and along the fault. Brief, but spectacular, histories show what happens when these stresses are released.

The book is exceptional in that it discusses rather esoteric scientific concepts in a non-patronizing way. The text is neither dry, nor overly simplistic. Any person with a limited scientific background and a high school education can grasp the concepts being examined.

The photographs of such things as offset streams, scarps, trees with interrupted growth, and sag ponds are carefully selected, and beautifully crafted. These follow the text well, avoiding the liability of having to probe through the book to match the picture with the explanation. They will call you to come to California.

Two excellent features are discussion segments with geologists who work on solving the fault's mysteries, and a section on parklands in which San Andreas Fault features may be found.

I highly recommend this wonderful book to anyone planning a trip to California, anyone who has an interest in the Earth and its processes, and anyone who just likes a darn good read.

4 out of 5 stars great pictures.......2001-05-14

Nice book. Fast reading. Excellent pictures. This book really hits home for Californians. Decent explanation of how the earth is moving.

5 out of 5 stars This book rocks!.......2000-10-02

Michael Collier has beautifully written and photographed the geological history of the San Andreas Fault. In what COULD have been an extremely dry subject he has captured my imagination with the most gorgeous photos and his plain-speaking explanations of geology. It's literally a page turner, too, with the flip-page diagram, showing the movement of the tectonic plates. A beautiful book worthy of the coffee table and a wonderful addition to my reference library.

The Grand Canyon is unspeakably beautiful and indeed awesome to even the casual beholder on the Rim. And experience it you can through the words of our authors, who turn the adage on its head: "A story is worth a thousand pictures."

Notable authors include: Pagee Stegner, Barry Lopez, Terry Tempest Willliams, Ann Zwinger, Stewart Udall, and Colin Fletcher.

If you are looking for a tasty sampling of writings about the Grand Canyon this may be your book. In its 253+ pages you get the flavor of writings by dozens of authors, and enough of each flavor for you to decide whether you've had enough with that one taste, or if you need to digest that author's entire work. The writings range from serious to the silly, from inspirational to scary, and from experiential to philosophical. There's probably something here for everyone - a vast variety of perspectives and experiences from canyon rim to beyond the river's edge. None of the selections are over 16 pages (and many far shorter) so even if you're less than delighted with any of them you're quickly on to the next. This is a surprisingly quick and delightful read, and you'll probably get to the end wishing for more.

This book is designed to give you enough interest in the Grand Canyon from an armchair perspective to induce you to actually go there. Accordingly there are 14 pages of information devoted to The Next Step - what you need to know to visit and safely enjoy the real Grand Canyon.

“Melting pot,” a phrase inevitably associated with the United States, may be even more applicable to Mexico, where ancient civilizations merge with modern cultures in a cross-current of peoples, languages and dialects, art and music, religions, hidden cosmologies, and fabled ruins. Travelers’ Tales Mexico explores this deep diversity in essays by important writers who have experienced it firsthand. On his journey south of the border, Carlos Fuentes reveals layer upon layer of history in Mexico City’s town square; Alice Adams discovers her love for Frida Kahlo’s work; Pete Hamill unearths the ghosts of Hollywood in Puerto Vallarta; and Mary Morris moves to San Miguel to find a writer’s life. Travelers’ Tales Mexico is a lyrical reminder of why it’s both a pleasure and a necessity to visit this magnificent country.

        Book Description

Whether he's engaging in mock aerial combat or riding an Ididarod sled, Randy Wayne White is one of America's most adventurous travelers. In this collection he studies anti-terrorist driving techniques, dives for golf balls in an alligator-infested pond at a country club, hunts his fellow man with a paint gun, ice-fishes for walleye with X-ray-stunned night-crawlers, and goes pig-shooting with Dr. Pavlov. With self-effacing optimism, White captures the joys and fears of wandering the earth's surface with an eclectic cast of weirdo fellow-travelers - a frog that won't jump, a group of expatriate Brits who've developed an interesting cure for "road jaundice," and even a mad Australian scientist.

Though he rarely finds what he's looking for - like the legendary landlocked bull sharks of Lake Nicaragua, or the secret to successful winter fishing on a Minnesota lake - he develops a Zen-like "passion for the means" and a rare ability to revel in the rib-aching humor of each exotic trip.

2 out of 5 stars Quick Read, not about Nicaragua.......2006-05-21

This is an easy read, and more something you would pick up and look at from the library for an hour rather than actually buy. Only one story is about Nicaragua (though it's a good story). The rest are about the many, many other places the author has been. Though the author seems to have had quite an interesting life off the beaten path, a lot of the stories are written with shallow prose and lack depth. Not worth buying.

        4 out of 5 stars A Great Writer.......2006-01-11

Some dated material does not detract from the fine writing.

5 out of 5 stars Wishin' I was with him.......2002-11-22

I've read all 3 of his "Outside" compilations. They all are, in my mind, great. Reading these books allows you to get lost, while you are in your living room. I wish there were more of them. If there is wanderlust in your heart, then you should read these stories. Some are better than others, some are more interesting to me than others, but that's why they make different flavors of ice cream too.

2 out of 5 stars Ramblings, with plenty of white space.......2000-07-30

A very quick read. Somewhat entertaining, but not much substance for prospective travelers to Nicarauga or elsewhere. The cover, or dust cover, of this book I bought via Amazon in May of 2000 looks nothing like the artwork on the Amazon web page I bought it from. Recommend you get this book in the library, read it and put it back on the shelf, as this is easily accomplished in a short library visit.

        -John

5 out of 5 stars These are not trips for ElderHospice folks!.......2000-07-27

Randy Wayne White is an authentic character. I suspected as much from reading his fiction efforts, usually involving Doc Ford. But in this collection of essays about his travels, you can see that he does not subscribe to Travel & Leisure or Conde Nast Traveler. He picks the damndest places to go, the damndest things to do when he gets there and writes about his experiences in a completely entertaining and very informative fashion. These are not your traditional outings and Mr. White would have it no other way. Hunting crocs with some authentic, although somewhat legal poachers, chasing pigs through cathedrals, exploring the seldom traveled parts of Australia, or fishing for fresh water sharks in Nicaragua (legend has it they exist), he is seldom far from disaster and you perversely kind of wish you were there..but not totally. He shows another side of himself with the gifts he brings to share with unknown Nicaraguan youngsters. I won't spoil the fun of finding out what it is...but it shows a softer side of the author, which is as welcome as his normal personna.

4 out of 5 stars Great pre-departure reading for all those going to Mexico........2000-12-29

The wonders of the world and its people were once revealed to inquiring souls through the tales of travelers. Stories that coke the fire of the imagination and inspired others to get up and go. James O'Reilly & Larry Habegger have done us all a great service in collecting these stories on Mexico's culture, history and wonders.

The book is logically organized into five single parts. Starting with chosen stories that reflect the ethos of Mexico. Followed by stories about places and activities that fellow travelers have found worthwhile. The third part is comprised of stories by people who have made a special connection between their lives and interests and the people and places in Mexico. Fourth is the struggle and challenges facing the country and concluding with "The Last Word" to remind you of the book as a whole. This is recommended pre-departure reading for all those going to Mexico.

4 out of 5 stars Putting a Face on Travel in Mexico.......2000-09-05

'Traveler's Tales Mexico' is a delightful excursion into the many faces and cultures of our neighbor south of the Rio Grande. Discovering this book after my third visit to Mexico gave me even more inspiration to return and to venture beyond the traditional tourist sites and activities. The pyramids at Teotihuacan, Mexico City's Chapultepec Park and Archeologicial Museum are a must for the first time visitor, but to get a real feeling for the variety and richness of Mexican culture, one needs to go beyond the traditional venues. Spend a week in San Miguel de Allende or Oxaxca, venture out beyond the zocalo and shops; and you will connect with the 'real' Mexico and gain an appreciation for all that Mexico and it's people have to offer. The tales in this book are inspired by such insights, gained through very personal adventures (and misadventures!)that brought the writers into intimate contact with the people and enabled them to experience the land, traditions and culture of Mexico in new ways. Contributions from teachers, writers and just plain folks, offer an entertaining and enlightening view into the essence of a vast country that has so much more to offer the serious traveler. From a hilarious tale of a gringo getting a shave from a traditional Mexican barber, to a recounting of the 'Day of the Dead' observances in Patzcuro; 'Tales' will whet your appetite for more and make you think more carefully about new destinations for your next trip to Mexico.

This has been my all-time favorite book since elementary school. I used to take it out of the library all the time. In it there are many different stories about hidden treasure. Some have endings, but most do not. If you like mysteries or like to hunt for treasure, you should definitely read this book.

                Book Description

This fourth volume in the Developments in Paleoenvironmental Research series deals with the major zoological indicators used in paleolimnology. Other volumes deal with the acquisition and archiving of lake sediment cores, chronological techniques, and large-scale basin analysis methods (Volume 1), physical and geochemical parameters and methods (Volume 2), terrestrial, algal, and siliceous indicators (Volume 3), and statistical and data handling methods (Volume 5). These monographs provide sufficient detail and breadth to be useful handbooks for both seasoned practitioners as well as newcomers to the area of paleolimnology. Although the chapters in these volumes target mainly lacustrine settings, many of the techniques described can also be readily applied to fluvial, glacial, marine, estuarine, and peatland environments.

I read the other reviews on this page, and I thought I should add something: this novel is unbelievably beautifully written, and the english translation is absolutely superb.

You cannot find any better example of novel-writing skill in any language.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Mystical-Reality.......2000-09-21

I've read all parts of The Story of the Stone. It starts and ends in a mystical fashion; coming full circle in a traditional ying/yang way. Wonderful five volume story about two wealthy families closely connected to the throne. Although there's not much known about the true author, I suspect that it was written by a maid. There is incredible detail from the perspective of the servents working for their sometimes nutty employers. The family actually built a garden at one point in honor of a visit from a daughter who had been chosen to be a royal concubine. If you want to immerse yourself in the ups and downs, daily life, (warts and all) of 1750's Chinese culture don't miss The Story of the Stone et al.

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Revolutionary Classical Chinese Romantic Work.......1999-03-18

This book was written one year before the French Revolution, in 1788, in Beijing, China by a riches-to -rags nobleman called Cao Xue Quin. It is viewed by many as the greatest classical Chinese romantic novel ever written.

I read the original Chinese version of this book when I was in high school, many years ago. At that time, my impression was that it was a Chinese Romeo and Juliet type tragic love story, in which the main characters Bao-yu and his cousin Dai-yu (Black Jade) suffered the fate of unfulfilled love, and no ever after. There was more to it than that, but I could not figure out what.

Recently, I re-read the book (the current trans- lated version). This time it sounded like the Adven- tures of Tom Jones, in which the teen-aged playboy Bao-yu was dallying in the ranks of the female members of his household (his cousins and maids), longing after many but only truly loving Dai-yu.

It was also a bit similar to Upstairs Downstairs -- a big noble clan with all its ladies, young misses and maids, and their lives of adventures and tears. But something was still missing. There was a theme, a message, which draws me and others to this great work of literature.

I finally figured it out: Almost all the WOMEN in this book were described as elegant, sophisticated, intelligent, graceful, excellent decision makers, and above all, beautiful. Most MEN, however, were described as fools, red-necks, unfaithful, heart-breakers, nogooders, users of prostitutes and abusers of power!

What I am looking at is a book (or one-MAN crusade) of Early Feminism. It is all the more remarkable because in feudal China, women did not have equal status. "marrying for love" seldom existed. It was more like "married by parental arrangement". Poor girls were sold as maids into rich households, or worse, they were sold as second wives or concubines.

The confirmation of my theory came from the author Cao himself. In his introductory book review, he said, "Thus begins this book ... I have hidden the real events and substituted them with fiction ... There were real persons in the inner-chambers, and their stories must be told ..." (Modern translation: I have real women in my household).

This message would make this a truly revolutionary work, not only in feudal China, but even to-day.

Should have first read the book review by the author.

5 out of 5 stars I think I can't use only "good" to describe such a good book.......1998-12-04

The book gives us a complete picture of the feudal societ of China. It exposes the rot of the late Qing Dynasty of China. What makes people moved most is the tragic love story between Lin Daiyu and Jia Baoyu. Its exquisite style of writing and variegated description do great credit to its success. Some forfather has said that it was an encyclopaedia of the feudal society of China, and I do agree with it.I think that the most valuable point of this book,is that it denounces the cruel percecution which has been done to women by the feudalism--the feudal system, and it embodies the author's thoughts that women should be respecte and be equal to men.In that society, these are rare and valuable.

                                          Book Description

A fast-moving fantasy novel, a no-holds-barred novel written on an adult level, about the war on terror. In the city state of Oolong Morblock, where a certain proportion of the people have a natural ability to cause themselves to explode, in effect making them potential suicide bombers, Ibrahim Chess tries to find the middle road: to steer a course of moderation and sanity in a world which is going mad, and where the civil peace is threatened by the increasingly intolerant fanaticism of the conflict between the minority group to which Ibrahim belongs, the astrals, and the city state's dominant group, the norms. Note: this book contains some disturbing scenes. If you do not find something in this book to disturb you then you are a seriously disturbed person. Are you a person of exquisite good taste? Then, sorry, but you are disqualified as a reader. This book pretty much takes the attitude that boundaries (especially boundaries of taste) are there to be breached. You have been warned!
