Product Description

Aquatic Biology and Natural History are subjects of interests to many, whether they be related to one's vocational education, one's avocation, or purely to one's appreciation for the living order of the world. This book has been written not only for entomologists, ecologists, and students of aquatic entomology, but also for sport fishermen, naturalists, and environmental assessment specialists. For those who may not have some vested interested in nature and ecology, this book will provide a pictorial introduction to some of the most fascinating life forms on earth and, hopefully, "wet" the appetite for understanding the aquatic insects, their environment, and their relationship to human life.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent insects!.......2007-02-12

I am very pleased with this text, as an up and coming fisheries biologist, I hope to use it in my future.

5 out of 5 stars book review.......2006-02-25

This book is very detailed and gives accurate descriptions of all aquatic insects. The pictures with in each chapter also depict what the specimen look like. With all the information on the aquatic insects that is provide by this book it would be hard to believe that there is a better book out there.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for the pictures.......2005-08-16

This book is amazingly beautiful. The illustrations alone make it worth the money. As an aquatic entomologist who teaches an aquatic entomology lab to college students, I find this book to be an invaluable source of high quality images for use in my classes. The pictorial keys are also very helpful - they are very easy to follow and make it almost a simplistic task for a lay person to identify aquatic insects down to the family level. Some of these keys are a little outdated since publication of the book, but they are still helpful for the most part.

My only complaint with this book is that it doesn't go into as much scientific detail as is necessary for a serious student of entomology. Still, this isn't meant to be a textbook or an identification manual for complex identifications lower than the family level. If the book is used as intended by fishermen and ecologists, this is a very helpful book.

And did I mention the ilustrations are amazing?

5 out of 5 stars Aquatic Entomology.......2005-08-10

This is a must have for fly fishermen looking to study entomology as it applies to fishing and fly tying. I saw this book at my local Orvis store (reference only) and one look told me I needed it in my library. The plates and drawings are fantastic. This is a detailed study, but not over the head of most fly fishermen. Match it with Gary Lafontaine's "Caddisflies", Shane Stalcup's "Mayflies - Top to Bottom" and/or Dave Hugh's "Matching Mayflies" and you have the start of a good entomology library for fly fishermen.
Aquatic Entomology even has sections marked by a small image of a tied fly, which are of special interest to the fisherman. Get this book!!

4 out of 5 stars An oldie, but goodie..........2004-12-17

The book is now quite old. There have been several regroupings at the family level since this book has been published so even if you use it correctly, you can incorrectly identify insects. Also, if you are serious about identifying aquatic insects, the family-level keys of this book are insufficient to give your work credibility. Those are the two problems with this book... 1- it is a little out of date AND 2- it is a limited tool for identifying organisms.

All that aside, it is a very good book to teach the CONCEPTS of taxonomy to students. The keys have nice flow charts that teach students to make the kinds of decisions that they need identify insects.

Does it have legs? Or not?
Does it have wings? Or not?
Does it have one claw? Or two?

The keys use pictures so that the process does not become bogged down in terminology. Thus I highly recommend it to teachers and to parents that are helping there child build their own entomology collection. I keep a copy for work shops.

The color plates in the back are beautiful and help convey the appearance of specimens in life. Most of the book has nice grey-scale illustrations.

The Author is a mayfly specialist... one of THE mayfly specialists in the world...

If you are interested in this book there are other titles you may find interesting. Try Reese Voshell's book if you are interested in teaching insects to older kids, or for watershed monitoring groups. [2002: A Guide to Common Freshwater Invertebrates of North America]; it also contains lots of interesting ecologic information.

If you are interested general taxonomy of aquatic insects, try Merritt and Cummins 1996 [An Introduction to the Aquatic Insects of North America]. It provides the best keys to genus-level for most insects. But be aware that a new edition should be out in 2 years or so... this book is not real friendly if you have not had a college-level entomology... but i heard a rumor that that there will be a nice glossary in the new edition that should make it more accessible...

of course not all aquatic invertebrates are insects... if you are interested in these critters (amphipods, snails, etc) try Thrope and Covich 2002 [Ecology and Classification of Freshwater Invertebrates]

Note that, for genus-level-taxonomy, the last two books will require access to a medium to High-quality dissecting microscope and may require a compound microscope. The Books by McCafferty and by Voshell do not require as much magnification...

                          Book Description

It is widely supposed that Hume (1711-1776) invented and espoused the `regularity' theory of causation, holding that causal relations are nothing but a matter of one type of thing being regularly followed by another. It is also widely supposed that he was quite right about this, and that it was one of his greatest contributions to philosophy. Galen Strawson argues in this book that the regularity theory of causation is indefensible, and that Hume never adopted it in any case.

                              Book Description

Daniel Clark, born in Ireland and a schoolboy at Eton, came to New Orleans in 1786, to join his uncle of the same name. He was prominent in the city, became an American citizen, and in 1806, was elected a delegate to Congress. Shortly afterward he broke with Wilkinson, with whom he had been intimate, and in this book gives much evidence of the General's treachery. Clark strives to prove that Wilkinson was a pensioner of Spain from 1794 to 1803; and an accomplice of Aaron Burr in treasonably plotting a separation of the states. The case is clearly and forcibly put and is a strong one, with information about Jefferson's administration of the West, and the causes there working towards a secession in the early years of the Republic.

                                        Book Description

This is the first detailed study of the operation of the Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion, an important group in early Methodism. Alan Harding explores how the Connexion developed locally; the identity of its preachers and their training; the religious and social origins of those who joined
its congregations; and the relationship between central direction and local initiative. The book examines the Connexion's attitudes to the Church of England and also to Dissent, to whose revival in the later eighteenth century it made a significant contribution. It considers the Connexion's
relationship with other sections of the Revival, and reflects on the doctrinal issues that divided it from Weleyan Methodism.

                                            Book Description

Parasitoids are insects that parasitize and eventually kill other insects. Between one and two million species of parasitoid insect exist on the earth today. This book explores how this staggering diversity is maintained and documents patterns in host-parasitoid interactions, including parasitoid community richness, the importance of parasitoids as mortality factors, and their impact on host densities as determined by the outcomes of parasitoid introductions for biological control. It documents general patterns using data sets generated from the global literature and evaluates potential underlying biological, ecological, and evolutionary mechanisms. A theme running throughout the book is the importance of host refuges as a major constraint on host-parasitoid interactions.

                                              Book Description

"Introduction to Theoretical Organic Chemistry" provides an introduction for chemists with a limited mathematical background, yet need a working understanding of quantum chemistry as applied to problems in organic chemistry. This book is unique in that it is written at the level of the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student in organic chemistry, whose exposure to theoretical chemistry is relatively recent. It fills a niche in that most books on theoretical organic chemistry are written by theoretical or computational chemists, whereas this book is written by an organic chemist.
The book covers molecular modeling computer software, and offers a useful guide to the scope and limitations of each program, along with specific examples of input and output for several of the most popular software. Numerous examples and exercises are provided.

                                              Book Description

With more than 4800 copies of the previous edition in use, this best-selling, comprehensive text documents the fundamental theoretical developments in astrodynamics and space navigation that led to Man's ventures into space. It includes the essential elements of celestial mechanics, spacecraft trajectories, and space navigation, as well as the history of the underlying mathematical developments.

The material presented in the text represents a 25-year evolution in course material developed by Dr. Battin. Former students who benefited from this material include three of the astronauts who walked on the moon.

The text format offers flexibility for the user. Chapters are largely independent of each other and may be read or taught in any order, offering the opportunity to organize an undergraduate or graduate course that meets the needs of students having various levels of background and preparation. Further, the book covers more subject matter than is covered in a single course of instruction, thereby motivating students to stray from the beaten path of the classroom.

The following comments refer to 1987 edition. Some of these comments were communicated to Professor Battin, who, very kindly, acknowledged them.

The book by Richard H. Battin, Adjunct Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, covers essential mathematical background needed to work with astrodynamical problems. Topics covered include hypergeometric functions, elliptic integrals, continued fractions, coördinate transformations as well as essentials of two-body-central-force motion.

The author's way of discussing these topics with historical introduction and personal narrative makes the book interesting to read. There are minimal typographical errors, probably, because the book was, personally, typeset by the author. However, there are a few omissions and oversights. For example, on page 172 captions are given for Fig. 4.15 and Fig. 4.16, whereas the actual figures are missing (The author has rectified this omission in the 1999 edition). In addition:

                                              a) On page 7, it is stated:

                                              (DELTA)r[VECTOR] = v[VECTOR](SUB)g x s(SUB)g/v(SUB)g

                                              where

                                              s(SUB)g = (INTEGRAL)v[VECTOR](SUB)g dt

In this equation, a scalar on the left-hand side is equated to a vector on the right-hand side. The equation should be modified as:

                                              s(SUB)g = MOD[(INTEGRAL)v[VECTOR](SUB)g dt]

                                              b) On pages 10-11 it is stated: "If you want to drive a vector to zero, it is sufficient to align the time rate of change of the vector with the vector itself." This is not true, in general, but only if time rate of change is negative.

                                              c) On page 13 the author tries to show that constant in the equation:

                                              [(DEL) x v(SUB)c]/(RHO) = constant

vanishes by the following argument. "The demonstration concludes with an argument that the fluid is converging on the target point r(SUB)T so that the density in the vicinity r(SUB)T of is becoming infinite. Hence, the constant is zero." There are 2 problems in this line of argument: (i) The statement, "Hence, the constant is zero" is true, only if the numerator is finite. B = infinity, implies A/B = 0, only if A is not equal to infinity. Otherwise, one has to apply l'Hospital rule; (ii) even if the constant is supposed to be zero, this does not imply that the curl is everywhere zero. A/B = 0, where B = infinity does not imply that A = 0. In fact, a could have any finite value.

                                              d) On page 109 equation of motion in a frame of reference moving with acceleration -a(SUB)1 is written as:

                                              m(SUB)2[a(SUB)2 - a(SUB)1] = ...

Since the frame is noninertial (accelerated) Newton's second law, F = ma, is not applicable in his frame.

                                              e) On page 223 it is stated: "When we compare Eqns. (5.57) and (5.58), it is clear that we must have

                                              sinE = SQRT[6(E - sinE)/sinE]."

This is not the only choice for sinE, which reduces (5.58) to (5.57) in the limit E tends to 0. The word "must" is inappropriately used here.

I would recommend this book very strongly to anyone seriosly interested in learning astrodynamics.

This is a quite interesting and charming novel even for someone who is not exactly a passionate reader of the 'classics'. The central idea, an ancient talisman with the power to make wishes come true, but shrinks with every desire that becomes true is fascinating and deeply philosophical and "human". I think Balzac should have elaborated more on this idea, exploring the dimensions of human desire and discovering more complex and deep characters for his novel. Instead, making the talisman work also for very trivial and passing desires, makes the while situation almost comical and superficial. It looks like Balzac didn't take himself too seriously with this novel and saved his efforts. Pity, but this is still a fascinating read.

O.K. A minority opinion. Nowhere are the master storyteller's considerable talents more admirably on display than in this quintessential commentary on the futility of desire. What is the locus of Balzac's genius? One of the all-time masters of character development, Balzac allows us a deeper appreciation of interiority.
What perhaps disturbs certain modern and post-modern readers about La Peau de Chagrin, derives from their delimiting reliance on the modern scientific world view. The very idea of a talisman - which certain magical powers - a love potion - is `hokey' or `wacky'. Of course, U.F.O.'s are somewhat plausible and `ring viruses' even moreso.
If the vehicle might seem uncomfortably quaint to some, the dignity of the project is, I feel, hardly compromised. Of course, we have that memorable, if not prototypical, B-film, "Into the Night", which seems to indicate that in fiction, weird things can still be acquired at antique stores and junk shops.
The question raised is however whether Balzac does bring his A-game to La Peau de Chagrin, and I claim most emphatically: A +. What is offered here is not dime store murder mystery fare (the genre of Earl Stanley Gardner, E. Howard Hunt, Dan Brown, et al) . . . but mortality mystery in dime store guise. Underlying the superfluity of our celebrated romantic angst is the dark inevitability of our certain doom. What Balzac wishes us the see in the tragic absurdity of his characters' collective fate, is that the doom and the desire are commensurate. If as we live, we die, if our inexorable desires are fatally predatory upon our better sense, what is the point of living, where is the meaning? This query, Balzac poses most seriously in his elsewhere acknowledged masterpiece, and for better or worse, we are still trying to answer that sphinxian riddle.

                                              3 out of 5 stars A familiar tale.......2001-05-20

A very familiar moral tale, in which Raphael, disappointed in his unsuccessful attempts to woo the rich Faedora (underlying theme perhaps - is she a lesbian??) enters into a Faustian pact, the "talisman" of which is the strange and exotic wild ass's skin. The consequences are of course, disasterous for Raphael and those with whom he comes into contact.

The messages are unsurprising - wealth without responsibility and/or the maturity to use it wisely is a curse both on the wealthy and on others. It's difficult to feel any sympathy for the hero (or is he an anti-hero?) Raphael: his love for Faedora is driven by her wealth and his poverty; and essentially he gets what he deserves.

The book I think suffers from the familiarity of its themes, and the hackneyed devices it uses - the skin is exotic as it has Arabic writing on it (everything from the East is mysterious, and curses of course are always powerful). The mood shifts of the book make it difficult to judge how Balzac indended it to be read - the first part is an eerie meeting leading to the possession of the skin, then a long section on the pursuit of Faedora, the last section being Raphael's decline beneath the effects of the skin (including a long satire on scientists, as they aim to analyse and neutralise the skin).

In all, not a bad book, but it suffers from the author's lack of a consistent approach the the story, and it contains nothing to surprise the modern reader.

                                              3 out of 5 stars Wacky!.......2001-01-30

Certainly not Balzac's finest, but still compelling in its own way. The thing ya gotta understand firstly is that this is one of the man's self-consciously 'philosophical' novels, meaning that drawing realistic and complex character portraits is not a primary concern. It's certainly possible to feel a certain amount of sympathy for Raphael, but he's not really much of a 'character,' and if this was one's first encounter with Balzac, one might get the false impression that he just wasn't able to draw deep characters. Anyway: this is, if I recall, only the second novel of the Human Comedy, and in many ways the ideas presented form the basis for his later works. The idea of success without any real work--success which turns out to be fleeting and ephermeral--is a common Balzacian theme, but here it's taken in a literal sense: Raphael acheives success not through his own merits but rather through the magical powers of the skin in question, even as this continued 'success' gradually diminishes his life-force. Compare this with Lucien in Lost Illusions, who rises and falls in much the same manner, only without any sort of physical representation of this rise and fall.

Bleh. The real question is, is the book a good read? Yeah, more or less. It definitely gets better as it goes along; one's patience is definitely tried by the antique shop sequence near the beginning, and I found the banquet/orgy scene to be more than a little tedious. However! Things do pick up: Raphael's courtship of Faedora is well done, and the novel's climax is wonderfully bizarre and nightmarish (I swear, it made me think of Lovecraft). The reader's patience is rewarded; it just takes a little while. As previously noted, not a good first Balzac (try Old Goriot), but once you're hooked, a worthwhile piece of work that provides priceless insights into the author's mode of thinking.

                                              4 out of 5 stars Solid Balzac.......1999-01-30

This is bo no means the man's best book. I have read 4 of his other works and this is the worst yet it is still an excellent book.

The plot focuses around Raphael, a depressed man who acquires a talisman that will grant your wishes. The catch is everytime you make a wish, the talisman diminishes, as does your health. The book is divided up almost into three seperate parts. The first deals with Raphael going to an elegant diner with colleagues followed by an orgy. The second part is cloddish and long as it discusse Raphael's romance towards Foedora. She is a sly temptress who really comes across as an uncompelling ice queen. Why Raphael would go after her is beyond me.

The third part features the books most touching moments and also its most wonderful imagery. This is where Raphael flees to the country and ponders his existence.

Overall a good book, worth reading and all of that. If you are considering Blazac read Eugenie Grandet and Ursule Mirouet first. Then read La Pere Goriot and Cesar Birrotteau. They are all far more compelling books.
