The Catalog of An Important and Historic Exhibition.......2000-05-04
African-American folk art, and more specifically the twenty African-American folk artists of this book, were the subject of a large traveling exhibition which began at The Corcoran Gallery in Washington, and traveled across the country for the next 15 months, in 1982-3. This beautiful and in-depth book is lavishly illustrated both with plates of the actual art works, and photos of the artists. There is much painting and wooden sculpture, and also mixed media pieces. In addition, biographical material is presented with great respect and focus. The authors are committed to promoting a deep understanding and appreciation for their subject, Black American Folk Art, and succeed. John Beardsley's essay, "Spiritual Epics: The Voyage and the Vision in Black Folk Art" discusses funerary art, and is both moving and erudite. A wonderful book.

Introduction To Electronics
ASIN: 0766816982 |
Book Description
Now in its fourth edition, Introduction to Electronics continues to offer its readers a complete introduction to basic electricity/electronics principles with emphasis on hands-on application of theory. Expanded discussion of Capacitive AC, Inductive AC, and Resonance Circuits is just the beginning! For the first time, MultiSIM® problems have been integrated into Introduction to Electronics, providing even greater opportunities to apply basic electronics principles and develop critical thinking skills by building, analyzing, and troubleshooting DC and AC circuits. In addition, this electron flow, algebra-based electricity/electronics primer now includes coverage of topics such as surface mount components, Karnaugh maps, and microcontrollers that are becoming increasingly important in today's world. Introduction to Electronics is the ideal choice for readers with no prior electronics experience who seek a basic background in DC and AC circuits that aligns closely with today's business and industry requirements. Objectives are clearly stated at the beginning of each brief, yet highly focused chapter to focus attention on key points. In addition, all-new photographs are used throughout the book and detailed, step-by-step examples are included to show how math and formulas are used. Chapter-end review questions and summaries ensure mastery, while careers are profiled throughout Introduction to Electronics, 4th Edition to stimulate the reader's interest in further study and/or potential employment in electronics or related fields.

Intro to Electronics 4E.......2005-09-17
I am using this book for a class. I have found it very useful for someone who has never been exposed to this material. It is a great text book and it doesn't assume that the reader knows very much. THings are broken down and illustrated profusely. Chapters are short and sweet, with lots of reader-exercises to drill and check material comprehension. Scotty/Sioux City
Good book however..........2002-06-21
This book was nice and simple, not over stressing anything. However it has quite a few mistakes in the formulas(it is the 4th edition, It should have less than it does).Good book to learn from however.
Good for newbies.......2002-01-03
I feel that this is a good book for newbies. It teaches electronics from ground up. There were a few chapters that should have been placed else where in the book though. Other then that it was great!

Ben Willis Strikes Again!!!.......2005-03-23
My name is Tucker and this book is very scary and a very good book. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it was one of the best books I have ever read! Please buy this book and you'll love it I promise it will make you love scary books even if you don't like them. If you buy this book you won't be sorry you will absolutley love this book I promise.
Warning-You Might Get Bored.......2002-04-30
...All it is, is a screenplay to the sequal "I Still Know...". It is even written in screenplay form. Some of the events and dialogue change, but it is basically the same.... It is also very boring the way it is. If it were in novel form, like the original "I Know..." book, then it might have been good. The best place to go for more "Hook", go see the movies. ...
This book was awesome.......2002-03-21
Like a script it was written excactly like the movie. If you loved the movie you love the book. If you haven't seen the movie that's okay you can read the book before the movie. I loved it. I thought that it was written with great detail and cleverness.
A GREAT BOOK! ESPECIALLY FOR FANS!.......2002-03-10
I read this book in one day. It was that good. It is written in screenplay form and has been edited for bad language. The violence is all in there though (some more grusome than the movie). The book contains about 8 pages of photos from the movie inside. It is an easy read and any age could read it. I have not seen this book in librarys, but it is on the internet and in stores. It is a great, scary book!
COOL BOOK!.......2000-06-27
I thought this book was really COOL! I could'nt put it down! The Best Book That I Have Read This Year!

Country Music At Its Best........2006-09-14
Country music started in Nashville when Roy Acuff, Archie Campbell, and other of the East Tennessee performers migrated west. Today, the biggest stars have come from other places and had more glory than those in the beginning. Before that, there were the Bristol Sessions.
In 1998, The U. S. Congress passed a resolution which declared Bristol, Tennessee, as making a "significant contribution to the development and commercial acceptance of country music." Country music actually began in Bristol. It was a revelation to me, even though Bristol is just north of my hometown, which is all
bluegrass music.
In my short stint as a singer here in my teens, I tried country only once, "Your Cheating Heart" on the Cas Walker television show and was not a hit. I did not look or sound like Dolly Parton. When I sang it at school dressed as a cowgirl holding my dad's guitar, the younger kids deemed me a star. I stayed with pop music on the local talent radio and t.v. shows and as a regular at Teen time Saturday mornings at the Tennessee Theater, also broadcast over WROL.
Tennessee Ernie Ford was popular back in the Fifties with his gospel songs, biggest hit, "Sixteen Tons." Dinah Shore from Winchester, Tennessee, was a big star on television and made a few movies. In her recording of "Sentimental Journey," she relates about Nashville, which is where she was discovered as a singer. Pat Boone is also from that area. However, it was the 1927 Bristol sessions which started the world of country music.
They were recording Appalachian ballads like the one about Frankie Silver. My favorite writer based most of her novels on these ballads, and I learned of the "Knoxville Girl" in her book, "If Ever I Return Again, Pretty Peggy-O." My favorite ballad was She Walks These Hills "In A Long Black Veil." Johnny Cash made a recording of it.
Jimmie Rodgers who sang about trains and railroads, not the Jimmie Rogers of pop music fame also started in Bristol. As did many of the cross-over singers like Don Gibson (who was rude to me at the Fair where I fell hard for Lash LaRue), the Everly Brothers, Archie Campbell (Hee Haw fame) who hosted his own
t.v. show in Knoxville, and the Carter family. Now, Dolly is the only star we have left in this area. Blind Alfred Reed was a composer as well as fiddler, called the devil's instrument in Lee Smith's book about country music, and he performed at a clan meeting in Princeton for pay; he said, "they were better people then." You had to go to Bristol to record hillbilly songs like Hank Williams' sad, sad tunes. Here in Knoxville, the Negro music of the 20s and 30s was recorded for a short time at one of
the hotels long demolished as are they.
Ralph Emery should be credited with the growth of country music as he was the all night talk show host which featured the long-lasting and the new and up-coming singers at the Grand Ole Opry, as did Hal Durham, who was one of the managers when it was downtown in the Ryman. Hal is from McMinnville from worked for a time at WROL in this town. Lowell Blanchard was on WNOX and also promoted the local musicians in every way.
Tennessee is lucky to be called the home of country music. It has a large following but is not my cup of tea. Justin Tubb was okay, Bill Andersen was great, and so were the Mandrell sisters.

Customer Reviews:
Great and entertaining book for everyone from class D to masters.......2005-09-23
This book gives you 365 puzzles from very fresh real games (with a few exception). All puzzles are checked by a computer program so all are correct! These puzzles are all about checkmate. However, not all of them force checkmate but all of them gives you a decisive victory, exactly like in your real games! Puzzles are divided into 5 groups depending on their difficulty. And this devision is perfectly done. I mean level 2 is definately more difficult than level 1 and so on. The book has an additional test at the end which can roughly estimate your ELO. This book has both answers and hints. Terribly convenient book!
Well, all above give this book 4 starts or 5 starts. However, there is something outstanding about this book that gives it 6 starts if it would be possible. Every puzzle is commented by Joe Galagher who is an amazing author with very nice sence of humor. Every puzzle diagram is commented by a paragraph or two with a brief history of every game where that position appeared. Even more! Every hint and every solution in this book is commented as well.
Now, I can tell you how difficult the problems are. I have about 1700+ USCF rating and the first level make me sweat but I solved correctly all problems finally (without chessboard). The level 2 was pretty hard and not all puzzles I could solve quickly or correctly. However, after resolution of all level 1, the level 2 was not as difficult. Some problems of the level 3 is not too hard either but some problems I could not solve even after a hint or using a chessboard.
I really improved. Now I play sharper and i believe that my next tournament will be much more successful. Excellent book and outstanding work by Joe Galagher.
---
Well, i can tell you that i do not like how this book is printed though. The quality of print is average. Such a great job could be printed a little bit better. However, the quality is acceptable though not the best possible.
Awe-inspiring puzzles.......2005-01-30
There have been a lot of puzzle books published recently. This is the best of the lot, and easily the best collection since the excellent Ultimate Chess Puzzle book by John Emms. Dependable Joe Gallagher has clearly collected many of these checkmate positions from his personal globetrotting as a chess professional, as the personal touch is evident in much of the chat. The checkmates are ranked on five levels, accordingly to difficulty. Great training just before your next tournament.
great book.......2004-12-29
this book contains-surprise!-365 checkmate problems. These problems are divided into 5 sections, in order of difficulty. These problems are great to use in De la Maza's 7 circles exercises (400 points in 400 days @ chess cafe). I have enjoyed the benefits gained from this book immensely. I highly recommend it.
Book Description
Toxic leaders, both political, like Slobodan Milosevic, and corporate, like Enron's Ken Lay, have always been with us, and many books have been written to explain what makes them tick. Here leadership scholar Jean Lipman-Blumen explains what makes the followers tick, exploring why people will tolerate--and remain loyal to--leaders who are destructive to their organizations, their employees, or their nations. Why do we knowingly follow, seldom unseat, frequently prefer, and sometimes even create toxic leaders? Lipman-Blumen argues that these leaders appeal to our deepest needs, playing on our anxieties and fears, on our yearnings for security, high self-esteem, and significance, and on our desire for noble enterprises and immortality. She also explores how followers inadvertently keep themselves in line by a set of insidious control myths that they internalize. For example, the belief that the leader must necessarily be in a position to "know more" than the followers often stills their objections. In addition, outside forces--such as economic depressions, political upheavals, or a crisis in a company--can increase our anxiety and our longing for charismatic leaders. Lipman-Blumen shows how followers can learn critical lessons for the future and survive in the meantime. She discusses how to confront, reform, undermine, blow the whistle on, or oust a toxic leader. And she suggests how we can diminish our need for strong leaders, identify "reluctant leaders" among competent followers, and even nurture the leader within ourselves. Toxic leaders charm, manipulate, mistreat, weaken, and ultimately devastate their followers. The Allure of Toxic Leaders tells us how to recognize these leaders before it's too late.
Customer Reviews:
delves into how and why harmful leaders come to and keep power.......2007-01-03
The central question for Lipman-Blumen, professor of Public Policy and of Organizational Behavior at California Claremont Graduate U., and one of the founders of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Leadership, is "What are the forces that propel followers, again and again, to accept, often favor, and sometime create toxic leaders?" The question has many sides involving sociological, psychological, historical, political and also in varying measures pathological and irrational matters. The author delves into these varied areas with familiarity, depth, analytic abilities, and nimbleness. There is no simple answer to the question. Followers' self-esteem, the delusions of crowds, deceptiveness of a leader, historical circumstances, and the nature of and need for society play into the acceptance, toleration, and support of toxic leaders. There is also often an ambiguity to a leader making it difficult to see if he or she is toxic; and some leaders may become toxic over a period of time. Not all toxic leaders are as evident in their time or even historical hindsight as Hitler or Stalin and the other ogres of history. Lipman-Blumen's purview of toxic leaders extends to Jeffrey Skilling of Enron notoriety and other top corporate executives of recent years whose harmful wrongdoings have been uncovered. While she regularly refers to certifiably toxic or questionable leaders in varied fields as examples, Lipman-Blumen engages only minimally in psychoanalysis of them. Her concentration is on the broader circumstances and patterns of how toxic leaders come to power in the first place and how they are able to stay in power even when their harmful behavior and policies become known. The author also pays much attention to the role of much of respective populations and key supporters in this. But the author also provides answers on how to counter toxic leaders in this timely, needed work.
Another Essential Book on Leadership by Lipman-Blumen.......2006-09-29
Not content with having revolutionized how we think about leadership with "Hot Groups" and "Connective Leadership," Lipman-Blumen has now set her sights on why "toxic leaders" can be so successful and why they can be so hard to remove. Almost all of us can relate to these leaders, ones whose toxicity is unquestioned even as their hold on their followers is intense. Often, their followers can even seem nostalgic when these leaders are finally chased out. Certainly this book is as timely as it is insightful. Read this one and her two other books.
Highly Recommended!.......2005-06-15
This intriguing, intellectual study of disastrous leadership offers a courageous interpretation of corporate scandal and political folly. Amoral leaders are not entirely to blame, Jean Lipman-Blumen argues. Rather, followers enable misguided leaders to rise to power and stay there. Her analysis applies psychological principles to Adolf Hitler's Germany and Jeff Skilling's Enron (not exactly parallel, but you get the idea) and concludes that toxic leaders' followers are willing victims who allowed misguided bosses to appeal to their basest instincts. While Lipman-Blumen's assertions are startling, she makes a compelling case written in dense but readable prose with intriguing detail. We suggest this book to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the relationship between leaders and their followers, particularly given the swath cut by today's toxic leaders.
HOW TOXIC LEADERS GAIN AND KEEP POWER, BUT CAN BE CHECKED........2005-04-19
Toxic leaders leave their followers worse off than they found them. A few of the many other ways toxic leaders act are they: violate basic standards of human rights; feed followers illusions; stifle criticism; maliciously set constituents against one another. The book shows how these leaders win people over by playing on their fears and self-esteem, only to ultimately use their power against their own followers. The book explores, in depth, how people are drawn into accepting, even embracing toxic leaders, and how these leaders retain power. This is an enlightening probe into the psyche of people and how their culture, situation, deepest fears, and dysfunctional personalities, make them vulnerable to toxic leaders. The book also explores ways of dealing with these leaders: counsel them to change; undermine them; join with others to confront or overthrow them. The book closes with a chapter on how to be freed of toxic leaders, by facing up to our anxiety and the accompanying pain, as well as by bringing nontoxic leaders to the fore. The author's insights apply to leaders of all kinds, political and business. This brief review does no justice to the breadth and depth of this work.To read this book is to help become aware of, and armed against, toxic leaders of all types. Required reading for all who yearn and strive to live free of domineering, destructive leaders. Our highest recommendation.
meandering.......2005-02-07
I found this book disappointing. The author meanders telling anecdotes about various nasty leaders, but can't seem to get on with an organised discussion of the book's supposed theme:
why do people follow these crooks?
