to rank this book a mere 5 stars is an insult to its greatness. I swear that i live by this book. it has inspired me to start my very own Bob Saget cult. no joke. This book brings me and my people together and brings us to spiritual nirvana. if bob saget was here beside me right now, i would be overcome by his utter greatness. i believe this book exemplifies what a great man he is. imagine a world where everybody is a bob saget clone. imagine how perfect it would be. it makes me tear just at the thought of such a perfect place. but the next best thing in my eyes is this book. me and my people read this book every day, and it has touched others as well as it has me. our clan is now reaching 200, and growing. without this book, i dont know who i would be today, but thankfully i dont have to worry about that, because i have found bob saget, and he has found and stolen my heart and soul. Thank you Bob for inspiring the author of this book to write such a timeless piece of literature. it is destined to be a classic for years to come. i hope that my grandchildrens children will be able to read this generations from now. John does a great job of putting together many simple but detailed steps into one book. Anyone who is considering learning the art and science of embryo transfer in cattle should first read this book!

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Very funny parody tales of a young Hellboy. Various different styles and artists throughout. There are bits and pieces from Hellboy Junior getting a car to much more surreal and underground styled pieces, so perhaps something for everybody. More Hellboy, in general, is a very good thing.

Utterly Tasteless and Soul-Destoying Fun.......2006-01-31

These people who are putting this comic down as "filth" sound as though they are attracted to the original "Hellboy" series because of its religious connections and are shocked-- shocked!-- to see the underside of religious motifs portrayed here; Idi Amin and Hitler rotting in hell, perverse paradies of Harvey characters and a general sense that we're doomed to become excrement anyway, but it's a hell of a toboggan ride down. The artists are plumbing the same depths as the Underground Comix of the early '70s, (but with better design skills).

The nadir of the human mind needs to be explored, and I enjoyed wading through the detritus of our collective psyche for awhile. Sure I felt dirty afterward, but at least the tone is jovial, and not so heavy-handed as most popular forays into the Dark Side (Oprah, Geraldo) have become, all weighted down with moralistic tsk-tsking.

Think the first season of Ren & Stimpy. You have to be a little bit sophisticated to "get" it.

Great compilation of tasteless comics!.......2005-04-18

I think some of this stuff will appeal more to people who are into R. Crumb than Mike Mignola. It's hard to find stuff that's this sophomoric and filthy but drawn this well. I thought it was funny as crap, especially the Sparky Bear thing.

If you read Mad Magazine you'll recognize Bill Wray's style from the Monroe comics. Stephen DeStephano (The Venture Bros) draws the Harvey-styled Huge Retarded Duck and Wendy the Sickly Witch.Dave Cooper draws an amazing sequence where Hellboy Junior meets Idi Amin and halucinates from eating mushrooms. There's also a great Basil Wolverton tribute. Even Mike Mignola's contributions, which are drawn the same way as Hellboy Senior, are hilarious.

Anyway if you think both Mad Magazine and Tijuana Bibles are funny I think you'll like this. Great stuff.

What is this?.......2005-01-20

I felt embarrassed reading this in public. The art is childish, the humor is forced and sophomoric and not funny. They should have read each other's stories before they went to press; most of them make the same joke of Hitler being tormented in hell. It got old real quick.

The book gets two stars for each of Mignola's contributions. As usual, everything he puts his hands to turns to gold. The artwork is charming, haunting, and with a few spare words, he gets real laughs. How does he make it seem so easy?

I don't regret buying this, since there are a couple of gems in it. The rest is surprisingly awful. It's the kind of material that makes some people turn up their noses at comics.

This is the worst graphic novel I've ever read. A few parts are funny but most of it is just sick. If you are a fan of Ren&Stimpy, Cow&Chicken or I Am Weasel style drawing, you might like it. Otherwise, give it a pass. My copy is heading to the used book store.

Luke Ford wants you to hate him. Guess what? By the end of the book you do!.......2006-03-05

I honesty was really looking forward to reading Luke Ford's book. A few months ago I stumbled upon his website and found an unusual cross between writing about porn and kink and writing about Jews; mostly about Jews and porn and Jews and kink. From the website I realized I wasn't going to always agree with Luke, but as someone who takes these subjects seriously and the interplay between the two, I was very interested in his personal story.

The beginning of XXX-Communicated: A Rebel Without A Shul starts off with Luke tell about his childhood, adolescence, young adulthood and his departure from his family's Seventh Day Adventist (and then own church) devoutness to his conversion to Orthodox Judaism.

Luke comes across as completely unlikable. He seems determined to make everyone hate him, but then doesn't understand why everyone does hate him. Perhaps he is looking for pity, but he comes across as the most unsympathetic character I have ever come across. He is attention seeking, misogynistic, conservative valued, hypocritical, deceitful, and prone to inappropriate behavior. It becomes apparent why no one seems to want him after reading the book: not his one-time friends, not women, not the pornography industry, not synagogues.

I did honestly buy the book excited about the notion of a Jewish rebel who challenged the mainstream and tried to be a good Jew while miring in the banality of porn and kink. I have truly never been more disappointed with a book than this.

I was left not liking Luke Ford, not feeling sorry or pity for him, but rather actually despising him and thinking that he was a pathetic attention driven individual.

Worst off, he comes across as a lousy reporter and an incredibly bad writer. His book is hard to follow. The array of people who hate him or who are his enemies blur after a while and they become indistinguishable. The writing degenerates as the reader gets further in. There is no redemption moment at the end of the book. Luke comes across as no better a person and no better of a Jew than he did a decade earlier in the book.

I believe that this is probably the worst book I have ever read. My recommendation would be to avoid this book. Do not buy it; do not read it.

Rebel Without A Clue.......2004-07-16

So, Mr. Ford is ousted from one temple after another for his refusal to give up his porn gossip website. As it should be. Ford wants to be an Orthodox Jew (probably because in the religion he finds reinforcement for his misogyny and bigotry)and the religious code he embraces forbids this. Where's the drama in that? It's not as if Ford is challenging the religious code. He simply wants to have it both ways, like a petulant child.

If Ford were half the writer/journalist he thinks he is he could easily have turned his back on porn gossip and started writing on any number of subjects and the rabbis would have smiled upon him. But he found a niche for his monosyllabic style of writing on the Internet, where the demand for stylized, intelligent writing is very low indeed.

This is the story of a stubborn, untalented, vainglorious man and it's a self-published book to boot. Doesn't that say it all?

interesting - not what you think it might be.......2004-07-08

This is not a lurid tale about the porn industry, which really is more of the backdrop here. It's an honest, candid story of a man facing many issues of faith that are ignored by most people today. Mr. Ford presents his story honestly and candidly. My only fault with the book is that the writer of autobiography should involve the reader more; here, however, Mr. Ford writes about himself with considerable detachment, so we don't get a sense of what he was feeling or thinking at some pivotal moments. He often uses dry reportage about private moments when a more personal recollection seemed necessary. I look forward to more of Mr. Ford's writing.

Good repertoire introduction to Catalan.......2004-05-24

This book is a little old now for an opening manual and has been superseded by Raetsky and Chetverik's Everyman title, but it's still a better choice as an introduction. It's organized around example games, but there is a good variation index, and significant sidelines are annotated within the games in almost as much detail as the main games themselves. That said, there is a lot of room given to prose explanations of strategies and plans, which means that players new to the Catalan can appreciate the ideas even when playing slightly different move sequences. Dunnington chooses a conservative repertoire, including the infamous Bg5 drawing line loved by GMs such as Andersson. However, alternatives are frequently given, and some of the variations (e.g. against the early ...c5 by Black) are wild and hairy. Make no mistake, the Catalan really is a reversed Grunfeld. The introduction contains advice about transpositions to the Bogo-Indian and Tarrasch, but doesn't go very deep.

Microeconomic Theory (3rd Edition).......2004-02-15

This book is an intermediate microeconomics book intended primarily for undergraduate, upper division students. However, those not attending college can also benefit from this book by using it for independent study or reference material. There are no major prerequisites other than some knowledge of basic economics. For those who have a calculus background, the author does include one to three solved problems at the end of the majority of the chapters which are clearly marked.

Of the 14 chapters that make up this book, one is an added chapter and three are optional chapters. The added chapter introduces such topics as the Lerner and Herfindahl indexes which deal with measuring monopoly power, peak-load and cost-plus pricing, and game theory. Some of the concepts presented in the three optional chapters are: the Hicksian and Slutsky substitution effects of a price change, deriving indifference curves from inferred consumers' preferences, price index numbers, utility theory under uncertainity, the Cobb-Douglas production function, linear programming, and general equilibrium and welfare economics.

A weakness of this book concerns how some of the concepts are presented. In other words, the author introduces some new ideas at the end of some of the chapters in the "problems" section rather than in the main text. However, overall, I think this book provides valuable information that can benefit many people, even those who have a minimal economics background. The author presents a reasonably clear explanation of the subject matter covered which includes providing a glossary at the end of each chapter.

very useful tool for intermediate or 400 level micro.......2002-04-18

Whether you need to use this to get through ECON 300 or a more advanced econ class this is a very useful how-to guide. There is little discussion of theory and no yakking -- just straightforward microeconomic problems and parables. Use it for review or to get you through your final exam. Very helpful and much clearer than your textbook.
