NOT PHOTOGRAPHS, THESE ARE DRAWINGS!.......2003-10-10
This 1992 book is an updated and revised edition of a 1982 book of Mr. Leonard's drawings titled CHANGES: 50 DRAWINGS By MICHAEL LEONARD. Its revision consists of a new artist's note, the replacement of 10 drawings from the original edition with 10 drawings from years 1986 through 1992 and a larger format. To my eye the reproductions here appear washed out and underexsposed (no pun intended), losing much of the subtly found in Leonard's drawings. The reproductions are larger than in the previous edition but their impact is weaker, because much of these drawings' power and beauty lie in their nuanced values and atmospheric feeling.Still, since it's the only volume on Mr. Leonard's drawings currently available I DO recommend it.Mr. Leonard crops and positions his figures in such a way as to create a strong dynamism within the frame of his drawings. It's surprising how many compositional variations Leonard can create from the simple subject of men undressing. His modelling and edge control are superb. Even though the images come from photographic sources, they have been modified and rendered with such skill as to convincingly inhabit their space. I would have given this book four stars if not for the disappointing reproductions. I also would have liked to seen some of Mr. Leonard's female nudes (Yes, he's done those too!) in this volume. I know that the publisher specializes in books geared to the gay sensibility, but surely a female nude won't frighten off any art lover who happens to be gay!?!I think it's about time for a new book of Michael Leonard's art covering the past 11 years. It's a pity that such a talent should be ignored.
The art is beautiful but the book is short on inspiration.......2001-10-20
Perhaps it is the "let's get it all in here" mentality of this book of Michael Leonard's drawings that diminishes the overall impact of what could be an elegant homage to a fine artist. Or perhaps it is the scale of reproductions and quality of transfer that makes this inherently tender book seem sterile. But past these deficiencies there is much to savour. Leonard draws beautifully, celebrating the male form in his own vision of honesty of observation that leads to sensually satisfying images. He has been drawing and painting the male figure for years now and few can match his softly lighted men changing and stretching. Others in his class include Wade Reynolds, Paul Cadmus, Charles Beauchamp and Claudio Bravo - each with his signature style making it patently obvious that the time to return to the male nude has finally arrived.

A vast disappointment.......2005-12-17
Comparing this book with Gaiman's Sandman is simply misleading. It has none of the light or spirit that characterizes his work.
I didn't expect it to be this good . . ........2000-03-20
but it is. It's really, really good. No, not as good as Neil Gaiman, but you couldn't have expected that. It's excellent, though. It's also a huge improvement on the first "Dreaming" anthology, Beyond The Shores of Night. Caitlin Kiernan (who wrote two story arcs in this collection made up of 3 issues each) is a worthy successor to the Sandman universe--which is not an easy thing to be--and Peter Hogan (who wrote two short stories) is close.
I shall now discuss each story. The first is "Day's Work, Night's Rest" by someone whose name I don't remember. I didn't really like this one. It started out trying to be serious (as far as I can tell), but ended up with a sort of black comedy that didn't work. And the art was really ugly. Next!
"Ice" by Peter Hogan. Ah, much better. This is the one where the story of Cluracan and his nemesis is resolved. We also get to see Nuala working as a barmaid in New York; she gets a visit from Lucien. I very much enjoyed Hogan's characterization of the Cluracan, and the art is superior.
Next is a 3-part story arc by Caitlin R. Kiernan, called "Souvenirs". It's about the Corinthian, a character I have always found fascinating. And this story is fantastic. I honestly think it ranks up with some parts of Sandman; perhaps "Collectors", only more disturbing. (Yes, more disturbing than "Collectors". This story is not for the faint of heart.) Caitlin Kiernan has a lovely and unique style. She invents words ("cricketwhisper") and makes extensive use of the word "and" to join together phrases and thoughts you wouldn't normally join together, creating startling, unconventional-sounding prose which somehow captures the mood perfectly.
Then there's another Kiernan story arc: An Unkindness of One. I didn't like this one as much, but it was still pretty cool. It's about Matthew becoming a man again temporarily, as Lucien becomes a raven again temporarily. I didn't get some of what was going on, but I think I'd have enjoyed it a lot more if I kept up with "Swamp Thing". Kiernan's prose still shines. Something to note: The f-word is probably used ten times as much in this one book than it was during the entire run of Sandman. :)
Lastly, another Peter Hogan story: My Year As A Man. This concerns Dream's raven Aristeas of Marmora (remember, "the one who came back after he was a man again"). As you may have figured out from the title, Aristeas spends a year as a man, then goes back to being a raven. It's a moderately good story, but Peter Hogan really won me over by putting Thessaly in it--quite a bit younger, and now calling herself Hypata, but still Thessaly. I was thrilled to see her again.
This collection far surpassed my expectations--particularly "Souvenirs". If you were devastated when you had no more Sandman to read, definitely check this out!
A superb comic!.......2000-02-11
Since Caitlin Kiernan took over The Dreaming it's been almost as good as The Sandman, as this collection will demonstrate. She's definitely one of the best writers at Vertigo today.
Neil Gaiman it's not..........2000-01-02
Well, I suppose that if every comic writer were going to be criticized for not being Neil Gaiman I'd have a very long night ahead of me indeed. But still, the fact that these are almost all characters that he created make the comparisons more obvious. While Ms. Kiernan does a workable job with the storylines and characters left hanging at the end of "The Wake," she just doesn't have the flair that Gaiman did. The biggest annoyance for me was that where Gaiman would hint at a million literary, mythological and pop culture references to be discovered like treasures on the third or fourth reading in his comics, with Kiernan the ones that aren't immediately obvious (which are most of them) are nearly always explained within the story. But for anyone who may have found Gaiman's writing too dense or obscure, they may prefer her method. I personally don't. Still, it was nice to have something left of the Dreaming, even if it's more like the Dreaming Lite.
Ms. Kiernan plays well with Mr. Gaiman's characters........1999-12-18
Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN comics series is categorically a classic in the field. Certainly, a certain trepidation about other authors mucking about with his uniquely defined characters is not only understandable, but expected. Not to worry our continuity-riddled grey matter! In this, the second collected volume of THE DREAMING comic, Caitlin Kiernan proves more than apt to the task. Here we have Gaiman archetypes like Mervyn, Matthew the Raven, Eve (yes, THAT Eve, the first one!), the Corinthian (a very bizarre dream who here deals with his addiction to eyeballs --- no twelve-step program was ever like this!), and my personal favorite, Lucien the librarian of dreams. The stories are all handsomely sophisticated with even more than a touch of Gaimanesque erudition. Additionally, while Ms. Kiernan's style, even semantics and syntax, are mindful of Mr. Gaiman, much of her prose is solely her own. As with Gaiman's masterful oeuvre, this is comics in its finest form. A grand introduction to those who have either forgotten or ever known the pleasure of comics.
Book Description
The co-creator of MAD and Little Annie Fanny finally gets the career retrospective he deserves.
Will Elder is widely regarded as one of the most influential cartoonists of the second half of the 20th century. And one of the funniest. He is best known for his artistic partnership with Harvey Kurtzman on all their most highly visible collaborations throughout their careers: MAD magazine, Humbug, Goodman Beaver, Trump, and Little Annie Fanny. At long last, Elder is getting the book he so richly deserves: Will Elder: The Mad Playboy of Art, a gigantic coffee table book collecting his best work from more than a half a century of drawing and painting.
The book will reprint a representative sampling of the work well-known to aficionados, including stories from the original MAD comic, independent efforts from Humbug, Help!, and Trump magazines, and Little Annie Fanny pages reproduced from the original, painted artwork. Above and beyond the known is the relatively unknown, obscure, or unpublished work, such as pages and spreads from a variety of magazines in the '50s and '60s that Elder contributed to (such as Pageant and Saturday Evening Post), the infamous Norman Rockwell painting parody slated for the 3rd, unreleased issue of Trump, hysterical gag sketches, celebrity caricatures, oil paintings done for his family, and more.
The book includes commentary by Hugh Hefner, Harvey Kurtzman, Jack Davis, Al Jaffee, Terry Gilliam, William Stout, and Jerry Garcia, who describe the impact that Elder's work had on satire and comic at in the second half of 20th century America. Elder himself comments on individual pieces, and Daniel Clowes, the author of Ghost World, supplies the introduction.

The Most Potrzebie Book Ever!.......2006-03-06
Just buy this already-- here's a book with great production values that features one of the great artists (of any kind!) of the 20th century, Villy Elder. "Genius" it says-- and for once it's fully justified. Comic genius, artistic genius, wiseass genius: Elder is the real thing.
Good, but lots of overlap with other collections.......2005-06-06
I'm not going to fault Daniel Clowes for including selections from Elder's work available elsewhere (MAD satires on "Gasoline Alley", "Archie", etc) or for NOT including the complete "Goodman Beaver Goes Playboy," which is apparently under copyright limitations from the ARCHIE publishers (and is available elswhere on the 'net!) However I would have preferred more complete sequences from TRUMP and HUMBUG - which are not readily available elsewhere - and fewer examples of Elder's "straight" artwork - one still-life fruitbowl is plenty, thanks! How about more on the "A Night at the Castle" and "With trembling pseudopods" illos, which are in any event reproduced elsewhere?
Hoo-ha! At Last:The Whole Furshlugginer Mess!.......2005-03-11
This collection of Elder's work is a solid addition to what is already available. (The complete Mad comic book issues are available in paperback form at most bookstores, and the Little Annie Fanny series can be ordered from Amazon.) This volume contains much of Elder's work from Trump, Humbug and Help, as well as other magazines, like the 1950s Pageant.
Also included are many personal paintings and drawings of Elder's family, as well as landscapes.
A class clown in art school, Elder also assiduously studied such masters as Peter Breughel and Cezzane. In fact, he even gives homage to these painters in an illustrated series for Pageant, in which he discusses the artists which inspired him.
There is a lengthy essay by Bill Stoudt in which he describes the painstaking process by which Elder, Harvey Kurtzman and Hugh Hefner created each episode of the "Little Annie Fanny" series. Hefner insisted that each page resemble a painting, and that is precisely what Elder delivered. Only after numerous drafts, sketches and erasures was a page of "Annie" ready for print.
When commissioned to satirize Norman Rockwell, Elder decided to prepare for the work exactly as Rockwell would. He enlisted his neighbors to model for the characters in the painting, and the result was the hilarious "Visit to Grandma's" in which a wholesome American family is depicted feeding small animals to a Venus Fly-Trap plant.
You can look over the panels of "L'il Melvin" or "Howdy Dooit" and see something different each time. This is because Elder doted over each picture, cramming it with details, building one joke over the next. Thus it took hours - maybe days - to complete one page, but so what? It kept the kids in the 1950s laughing their butts off! (I know because I was one of them. We used to run around the playground, running like the characters in the "Starchie" parody with our knees up to our chins.)
But did he make money? Well, eventually, but he could have made a lot more. In 1956, Kurtzman and Elder left Mad to start their own humor magazine, Trump, financed by Hugh Hefner. Kurtzman had given an ultimatum to publisher William Gaines that he would remain with Mad only if he could retain 51% ownership. Gaines insisted on 49%, so Kurtzman quit. In retrospect, he should have stayed, because the magazine went on to make a fortune for Gaines. Trump, however, folded after two issues.
As other reviewers have suggested, Elder's work belongs not only the category of "comic books" but possibly to the world of art. Will Elder drew in the tradition of Breughel and Hogarth. He drew the Human Comedy. Ultimately, he held the mirror up to nature and found it all hilarious.
Excellent Art Book.......2004-06-17
Will Elder is one of the greatest artists in American history. Elder's works have appeared in magazines ranging from Mad to Playboy. Many of Elder's best works are parodies of such comic strips as Archie and Lil' Abner. Elder eventually became a full-time artist at Playboy Magazine and was one of Hugh Hefner's top assistants.
This is a must have book for all Will Elder fans.
An in-depth retrospective of the American satirist.......2004-04-04
Gary Groth and Greg Sadowski's Will Elder: Mad Playboy Of Art provides an in-depth retrospective of the American satirist known for his MAD comics. Will Elder packs in over a hundred pages of black and white and color illustrations from both popular and obscure magazines. The Goodman Beaver stories are reprinted for the first time in their original format, while paintings and sketches from Elder's other works document the personality and achievements of a zany artist.

Great bio on Rex Harrison.......2006-08-17
I was not particulary happy when I discovered that this great actor was arrogant, difficult to work with and bascially an unpleasant man. But what does not get lost is the impact that Harrison made in his career on the stage and in films.
While his cruel personality detracts any love for the man from me, it does not tarnish the fact that he was a very gifted performer. Alexander Walker did his homework in bringing Harrison's tempestious and volatile personality to life and also bringing his achievements and make us understand that while he was hated by many personally, he was loved professionally by the audience.
Honest and thoughtful biography of England's premire Shavian.......1999-01-18
In spite of a rather trite title,FATAL CHARM. is indeed one of,if not the best written book on the life of the late Sir Rex Harrison. Mr. Walker shows us the great actor warts and all and we end up loving and understanding Harrison all the more because of it. It is all here, his six marriages, humble liverpool beginnings, his fear of singing on stage, and his volitle personality, Mr. Walker describes the great kindnesses he gave Kay Kendall and Lilli Palmer on their death beds,he also tells of the dreadful scenes with Palmer and 4th wife Rachel Roberts. The more you read the more you get to know Rex the man,not just the persona he put forth to people. In short Fatal Charm is a refreashing account of the personal and proffessional life of one of our centuries greatest actors.it shows how one man's personal life, his tradgedies and triumphs, can propell him proffessionally to a point of perfectionisim that would not have been there if he were a less irracible man.

Professionals who work with clients or large accounts can create lifetime relationships based on these well-researched secrets. Based drawing from extensive interviews with client executives, Making Rain offers a series of provocative insights on how to shed the expert-for-hire label and develop long-term advisory relationships. Exploding the popular myth of the "Rainmaker," a dated and dysfunctional figure that clients no longer welcome, Andrew Sobel argues that any professional can learn to "make rain" on an ongoing basis with existing clients by developing a special set of skills, attitudes, and strategies. These innovative tips and techniques from a recognized leader in the field of professional services will enable any consultant, salesperson, or service professional to create enduring client loyalty.

Invaluable Advice.......2006-05-27
As someone new to the consulting game, I needed a bit of guidance. After 15 years of teaching in high school classrooms, I have moved on to teaching teachers through a consulting company. It's been fun but challenging as my entire world up until now has been academia. So, a fellow consultant suggested this to me and I read it. It did me a world of good.
I can't say it answered all my questions; however, it is very good for giving a good overview of the life of a consultant. It looks at both the big picture--growing a business through gaining and keeping clients--and the small picture--practical tips on how to deal with individual clients. But what really appealed to me was his apparent willingness to be honest. He backed up his claims with experience (both his own and that of his colleagues) and he didn't shy away from pointing out how both consultants and clients can fail. He's not afraid to tell someone he's going to walk away from a contract.
I'm too green in my career at this point to appreciate all of Mr. Sobel's words. It would be worth coming back to this book later as I gain experience. Still, I'm already seeing more and more of the truth of his advice as I work from day to day. I can't say if Mr. Sobel has all the answers, but he clearly has valuable things to say and I would recommend it to anyone who works in a client-based job.
Very Useful Wisdom.......2004-06-19
This is a subtle book which contains a lot of wisdom about building client and customer relationships. It's a well written and engaging read. The premise is that traditional "sometimes wrong but never in doubt" rainmakers are increasingly dysfunctional in service organizations, whose clients demand value-added in the very first meeting. They are too sales-focused, they are in-and-out, and they don't bring enough content or client knowledge to early client meetings. The alternative is to teach every professional to make a bit of rain every day or every week. Each chapter looks at a different skill or strategy which will help readers "make rain" with their
clients. Chapter three is useful because it summarizes the advisor skills which are set out in Sobel's superb first book, Clients For Life. Other chapters cover topics such as rapidly building trust; adding core, surprise, and personal value to relationships; exercising the mindset of independent
wealth; and developing institutional mechanisms to "make rain" at the firm level. I think Making Rain appeals to a sophisticated reader, with its engaging anecdotes about client relationships and several chapters about historical figures who were great makers of rain (for example, Benjamin Franklin and the Welsh mystic, Merlin). This is an excellent read.
Practical and refreshing.......2003-11-04
There are very few worthwhile books about building client relationships, and this is definitely one of them. Sobel's main focus is how you de-commoditize yourself in increasingly competitive service markets. What I like is that he doesn't pretend to offer a grand strategy or one-size-fits-all prescription, but rather a series of thoughtful ideas for distinguishing yourself from the pack. These include thinking holistically about your "relationship capital"; the seven attributes of client advisors; the mindset of "independent wealth"; and some interesting history about great client advisors. The case studies/anecdotes are educational and often funny, and the writing is excellent. The chapters are short and easy to read.
Very boastful title; little new substance.......2003-10-23
While Mr. Sobe's premise is interesting -- client relationships are developed through the sequence: expert-inner circle-trusted advisor; his approach to following that path is filled with clichés (e.g. client loyalty = value + trust + going the extra mile) and generic terms (e.g. becoming an expert requires you to: (1) do it faster; (2) do it better; (3) be different; (3) be better prepared ...). He continuously uses terms such as trust, integrity, rapport, but fails to put them together into coherent algorithms or work programs to allow the reader to understand how to work through the author's "expert-inner circle-trusted advisor" paradigm.
Nothing new here.
Much-needed guidance.......2003-02-21
I just received this book and I've already read some of the chapters twice. Making Rain is full of practical ideas for how to increase your effectiveness at building client relationships and keeping clients for life. Sobel's concepts are fresh and highly original, and they are supported by client interviews, contemporary anecdotes, and fascinating historical profiles of people like Ben Franklin, who used humor to disarm and influence both his friends and adversaries. In my own business I've worked with clients for many years, and virtually everything in this book rings true for me. What's particularly valuable is the "how to" and the detailed ideas and strategies that Sobel sets out. Making Rain is well-written, easy to read, and quite funny in places. Anyone in business could pick up a handful of powerful tips on improving client retention from this book (one of the last chapters is "Managing Clients in Uncertain Times," which has a lot of useful reminders in it). If you work with either individual or corporate clients, Making Rain provides much-needed guidance.
