Book Description

At the culmination of their professional careers, great Oriental physicians often write books setting forth the mature versions of their clinical vision, their creations and accomplishments. Chasing the Dragon's Tail is a book in this tradition, but one that also charts a course for future explorations. Thus, while it details Dr. Manaka's clinical system in its fullest and most effective form, it is also an invitation to further investigation by one of the most inventive Oriental practitioners of the preceding generation.

The text introduces Dr. Manaka's major clinical and theoretical accomplishments by describing how the "X-signal system'' is the foundation of human topology, function, and response. In essence, the X-signal system defines qi, yin-yang, and the five phases as clinical events, just as traditional Oriental thinkers recognized these ideas through right-brain pattern recognition. While Dr. Manaka references some of the most advanced scientific thinking of our era-information theory, holographic models and new paradigms-his explanations are full of practical tests which readers can use to confirm his ideas for themselves. The core of the text is a complete description of Dr. Manaka's treatment system. This is of great importance, not only because Dr. Manaka was recognized in both Japan and China as one of the foremost practitioners of his generation, but also because the system has already proven itself adaptable to many others. It is thus a clinical manual of unique value because it describes Dr. Manaka's most important techniques: ion pumping and other root treatments, as well as his distinctive use of fire needles, channel stimulation techniques, sotai, moxibustion, and other modern Chinese and Japanese clinical developments. Beginning with a step-by-step template for formulating and confirming a diagnosis, Dr. Manaka provides the instructions necessary to apply these techniques quickly and with confidence. The text concludes with case histories and appendices that provide supporting technical details.

5 out of 5 stars East meets West on common ground.......2001-06-19

Using ideas from chaos, quantum, systems, and information theory (and many more), this book is a truly fresh and much needed perspective on TCM. The X Signal System abandons the causal theory of western biological sciences to answer the questions of TCM and effective treatment, and draws explanations and theories of energy, information exchange, and life from modern physics.

I am a student of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and am young in the arts, but it is clear that the foundation laid in this book will be used as a framework for western science to gain a new appreciation for Acupuncture.

We have learned much since the Huang Di and his ministers, and now with the help of Manaka, we can focus on effective treatment in modern times, as well as the classics.

                    Description:
The premise of this paper is that continued improvement in the understanding of wildfire impacts on soil erosion and better prediction of resulting hazards can be best achieved by adopting a concept of global regional variants and endemic factors that distinguish some regions in terms of post-fire erosion characteristics. The need for such an approach is exemplified here based on the fire-prone eucalypt forests in south-east Australia. Wildfire effects on vegetation, fauna, soil erodibility and erosion in this environment are evaluated and placed in the context of the global state-of-the-art for forest environments. In addition to expected variation resulting from, for example, geology, topography and climate of the area, it is argued that a distinctive post-fire behaviour is caused in these eucalypt forests by the interaction between specific characteristics of the vegetation, litter, soil properties, faunal activity and micro-scale surface features. Soil erosion limited only by post-fire rainfall intensity and quantity, or until bedrock is exposed, might be expected after wildfire on steep slopes in these forests given the non-cohesive character of the often sandy soils and their universally water repellent character. That this scenario is not realised, except possibly under extreme rainfall conditions, which rarely occur during the vulnerable post-fire period, can be attributed to a unique suite of features that disrupt or provide sinks for overland flow, bind the loose in situ soil and trap mobilised sediment. These include mats of fine roots, litter dam-microterrace complexes and faunal activity by small mammals and ants. In combination, these characteristics reduce post-fire hillslope-channel sediment transfer, at least under light to moderate intensity rainfall typical of post-fire periods following recent wildfires. Evidence is discussed suggesting that the long-term geomorphological role of wildfires in south-east Australia may be of relatively minor importance and confined largely to enhanced weathering of exposed outcrops and redistribution of soil across existing erosional and depositional landforms. The soil fertility and downstream water quality implications of widespread transfer of topsoil to watercourses resulting from frequent, often severe wildfires are nevertheless significant.

                      Description:
Elevated levels of predation of birds' nests near forest and woodland edges have frequently been reported for fragmented European and North American habitats, but have not been well tested elsewhere in the world. We used artificial nests to test whether predation was higher at edges within subtropical Australian eucalypt forests. Nine study sites were selected in each of three contexts: forest/pasture edge, forest/suburban edge, and forest interior. Within each site, five artificial nests were placed at each of two heights (ground and elevated), and this experimental design was used for 3 years at interior and suburban edge sites, and 2 years at pasture edge sites. Nests consisted of a grass cup containing one quail egg and two plasticine eggs, and were exposed for 7 days. Effects of edge context, nest height and year were tested using repeated-measures Analysis of Variance. On average, predation levels were about 70% greater adjacent to suburban or pasture edges than within forest interiors, and about 40% greater for ground than elevated nests, and both edge context and nest height were highly statistically significant. Neither year, nor any higher-order interactions, significantly affected predation levels. Predators were identified for 250 of 369 depredated nests, of which 80% had been preyed upon by birds, 12% by mammals, and 7% by reptiles. Our results suggest that birds nesting within eucalypt forests near edges or within small remnant forest patches, which are effectively all ''edge'', may experience consistently higher predation pressure than birds nesting within interiors of more extensive tracts of forest.

What I want in a travel guide is what I want in a good traveling companion: one that is passionate and persuasive about the journey, but not pedantic. I want one that is mindful of the economies of time (history) and distances (geography) and what can be comfortably accomplished in traversing both. Moreover, I want a guide with good cheer and that knows just the right way to pick up the pace and energy at any given moment with a touch of wit and memorable wisdom. Kettler & Trimble deliver all this...again. Their first volume of Medieval & Tudor London firmly established their credentials and "Days Trips South of London" proves they are no one-hit wonders. Even if you prefer solitary travel, I cannot imagine a more fitting duo to accompany you. Their real charm lies in that rare balance of being highly organized and efficient, yet deceptively spontaneous in spirit. What a way to go...and come back.

                      5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2002-07-16

I love the style of this book, as well as the first--the anecdotes and wit keep even a non-history-buff like me interested! We're planning a family trip to London later this year, and we're having great fun picking the sites to see and learning all the fun and interesting facts we didn't cover in history class, as well as brushing up on those we did.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing But the Highest Praise.......2002-07-16

With all due respect to "pink-slipped-arizonian," as far as I'm concerned this guidebook (and the one that preceeded it by the same authors) is a marvelous work -- witty, yes, but I hardly see that as a drawback! I spent quite a bit of time teaching high school history, and believe me, if you can find a high school student who knows 1/3 of what this book imparts, then it is one who has a real fascination with history and has made it a deliberate area of study. This guidebook is intelligent, full of useful practical information, replete with accurate basic knowledge of British history and stuffed with intriguing details and fascinating trivia. I have been studying Tudor history for over 20 years, and this book delves into some of the more obscure bits from that and many other eras. I reviewed this book and its predecessor for Renaissance Magazine (see the upcoming August issue) and stand behind every word I wrote in those reviews. These two books are excellent, and I give them an unalloyed five stars, the highest possible recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars great as a travel guide.......2002-07-16

If you are interested in travel sites in England, than this is the book for you. Not meant as a serious treatise on English history, it is a look at sites south of London and what is worth seeing and what you should skip. These two ladies obviously are having a great deal of fun with their writing, and when you pair this with their earlier book on Medieval and Tudor London, you have a fun, light-hearted look at one of the best places to tour on vacation - merry ol' England!

                        Book Description

Biologists and zoologists have the luxury of being readily able to view, touch, measure and observe the life cycles of their organisms of interest without great difficulty. For bacteriologists such tangible examinations are denied. Only recently has it become possible to build up an understanding of the nature of these communities of bacteria. Once water in a well is infected it is important for the environmental engineer to isolate and identify the bacteria present in the water in order to rehabilitate the well. The environmental health professional must also have a basic working knowledge of bacteria and how they react in the environment. This knowledge allows them to recognize the bacteria, evaluate the sickness that the bacteria cause, and in time control the sickness. The Practical Atlas for Bacterial Identification takes a fundamental approach, identifying bacteria by classification, family or genus names. The bacteria are then placed on a graphic which will allow the reader to visualize and therefore understand the complex set of bacterial responses to laboratory identification methods. The book is organized into three parts. The first part is an introduction to some of the techniques which may be applicable to obtain a "pure" culture and then carry out the primary investigative tasks before attempting identification. The second part contains a series of tables which can be used to speciate bacteria from some major bacteria genera. The third and final chapter is an atlas of the diversity and commonality of some characteristics within various groups of bacteria. Features

                        3 out of 5 stars Save your money - buy Bergey's manual.......2002-10-22

The book begins with a decent 6 page chapter on the "Initial Stages to the Identification of a Bacterial Culture," then has a condensed version of Bergey's manual, which theoretically could allow identification to the species level, provided the information is correct and complete. I got this book yesterday, and found an error on the first thing I looked up. (in table 7.1 - Streptomyces does produce aerial hyphae.)

A quarter of the book is "The Atlas Concept," in which a map of bacterial genera is shown, organized so that "the countries are families and the cities are genera." This atlas is then repeated thirty or forty times with shaded areas to show gram stain reaction, aerobicity, morphology, flagellation, catalase reaction, oxidase reaction, pigmentation, various biochemical reactions, etc. This may be somewhat useful, but in my opinion, not worth buying the book for.

Approximately 20% of the book is useless unless you use the author's commercial BART (TM) identification system, which it appears is only used to identify iron-related, sulfate reducing, and slime forming bacteria. If using the BART system, this book may be worthwhile, although one would think that the package inserts for the BART system would contain the same information.

Overall, I'd say get a introductory microbiology lab manual if you need to know how to read gram stains, determine aerobicity, and do biochemical testing, and use Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology for your identifications.

Three years after E. B. White's death, Rebecca Dale discovered a cache of his New Yorker writings that had yet to be collected. There's certainly nothing mediocre about these 161 pieces, which range from nature vignettes (a New York City sparrow extols urban life) to musings on language, business, and liberty. White's 1953 fantasia of visiting Thoreau's Walden Pond with Joseph McCarthy is peerless. "Wait a minute!" the senator realizes. "This man was Communist-inspired. That accounts for his sour attitude about housing--" The satire is strong, but so is the celebration. A short piece on a skating fest ends: "Ice is an odd substance to have at last freed the body in its persistent attempt to catch up with the spirit." And speaking of which, in "Fred On Space" White asks his dead dachshund how he feels about the first dog launched by the Russians. Fred is far from impressed: "The excuse you men give is that you must continually add to the store of human knowledge--a store that already resembles a supermarket and is beginning to hypnotize the customers."

I say, and not for the first time or after reading his first book (I've read them all, again and again) that anyone who wants to learn to write contemporary English as it should be written should close himself in a room with EB White for as long as it takes. He or she might even learn to be a better person from the example.

5 out of 5 stars Writings from The New Yorker by E. B. White.......2007-02-23

I intend to have the very first item in this read at my memorial service - which I hope won't be soon! Some of this was slightly dated, but always good reading. He had such a unique take on his world and such a down-to-earth way of looking at the goings-on around him.

5 out of 5 stars eclectic selection of his writings.......2006-07-16

This book is perfect for the business traveller. It is a quick read in part because the pieces are brief, and in part because of E.B. White's flawless command of the English language. The compilers of this anthology may not have a key to E.B. White's soul, as other reviewers expected, but why should that matter?

                            3 out of 5 stars Here's proof E. B. White had to work for a living........2000-05-26

"Writings from the New Yorker" is a poorly organized commercial re-packaging of E. B. White snippets banged-out under the pressures of deadlines in the work-a-day world. In spite of my respect for the man and my love of his more carefully crafted writings, this book sputtered and stalled as I read along.

But E. B. White does manage to shine through this collection in spite of its hodge-podginess and your reward for plowing through it will be the discovery of a gem here and there.

Were he still with us, White himself would likely have a field day editing this book, tossing out stuff. For one thing, his editors made him use "we" instead of "I" in these unsigned pieces which he objected to and which makes you wonder just how "handcuffed" he was in other unspoken ways as he wrote them.

If you're an E. B. White groupie who simply must read everything White has ever written, buy this book. Otherwise--save your money.

3 out of 5 stars An odd collection of White's mediocre, dated, small pieces.......1999-07-17

I can't think of a book or collection of EB White's writing to which I wouldn't give high praise. Here, the writing is good (of course, it always is) but that the collection was put together by someone not in the writer's family or intimate (editorial) circle may explain why it seems a bit void of that quintessential EB White spirit. Understand, these are not essays or letters. These, for the most part, are very short pieces, most of which ran in The New Yorker as short, witty fillers or, as that genteel set liked to refer to them, "occasionals." Some, because they were written many decades ago ('30s and '40s) are dated. Some references or phrases are left unexplained, leaving this reader stumped. If you want to read classic EB White, aside form his children's classics, I recommend his "Essays" and "Letters," and "The Second Tree from the Corner." THESE are classics. This collection, on the other hand, demonstrates that, while EB White was always a top-notch writer, even the best have their mediocre days.
