Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824-1898) was a towering figure in late nineteenth-century France. The country's greatest public painter, he created murals that decorated museums in Amiens, Rouen, and Lyons as well as major buildings in Paris-most notably the Pantheon, the Sorbonne, and the city hall. Critics from the political right, left, and center, the avant-garde, the Academy, and the state all agreed on the importance of Puvis's murals. Avant-garde artists greatly admired and drew from his work. There was much controversy, however, over the meaning of these murals. This handsomely illustrated book is the first full-length examination of Puvis's murals and their critical reception during the artist's lifetime. Jennifer L. Shaw explains that Puvis's paintings were imagined to embody a vision of France. Although his regional images, allegories of the French heritage, and evocations of the nation as an embracing motherland were all part of a grand tradition of public art, Puvis's painting style was more closely aligned with the avant-garde. Rather than providing a specific narrative or allegory of France, Puvis's murals provoked viewers to experience their own fantasies of Frenchness; rather than using the close brushwork favored by most of his contemporaries, Puvis used large flat areas of color to render his subjects. Shaw persuasively argues that Puvis was the only painter of the period to unite the traditions of public art and modernist form. Her original analysis of Puvis's art underlines his importance to the history of modernism; her examination of the public response to his art illuminates debates about art, subjectivity, and national identity in fin de siècle France.

Great Bed Time Stories.......2003-01-18
I read this book to my daughter every night as I am trying to put her to sleep. These Will James books are really good. The stories in Cow Country are full of action and always seem to have a twist at at the end. Will James does a great job of painting the picture of the old west. He also tries to get you in the mind of his characters. These are great books that should never be passed up!!!!!!!!!!!!

Will James' collection of stories and illustrations is a beguiling antique, first published in 1927. The theme is the changing culture of the West during the first 25 years or so of the 20th century. Cattlemen and cowboys struggle with new methods and technology. Environmentalism is threatened. Cow country gradually changes ownership, and the stage is set for clashes in vision. Out on the Y-Bench spread, the new owner is a dude who tries to impose European ideas of saddles, livestock husbandry, and range management. Grizzled Bearpaw and the boys take exception to these mandated changes. Humorous confrontations ensue. In another story, two old timers just can't stomach encroaching civilization and head west for California, until real estate developers scare them back to Wyoming. The presentation of the book is more than its content. The many charcoal and pen-and-ink drawings look as rustic and hardened as the weather beaten cowboys, wild horses, and longhorns they portray. The first person narratives of the Westerners are rich with vernacular and colloquialism. The stories are lightweight, but hearfelt. More as written portraits than tales of Western adventure. Will James' work as an illustrator compares favorably with Remington and Russell. The book celebrates his love of the land and the animals, a change of pace for modern readers. ;-)

Question and answer session.......2004-04-01
In his preface, James explains that his reason for writing this book was to answer the "many questions and of the kind that's been asked of me often." Although packaged in the guise of a story, UNCLE BILL manages to be little more than a question and answer book-and only slightly more entertaining.
The premise is simple: two city children, Scootie and Kip Powers, come west to visit their cattleman uncle for a summer. Their uncle, being busy with ranch affairs, turns the kids over to an old cowpuncher known as "Uncle Bill" (no relation). Uncle Bill hauls the kids all across the range, teaching them to ride, rope, and take care of themselves. Although a few of Uncle Bill's stories are amusing, his unending instructive speeches have a decidedly didactic feel.
I rather doubt that even children would find this story entertaining.

The only way to really know how your marketing campaign is doing is to test it with real people in a real life situation. While focus groups and other research provide some kinds of measurement the true test of success is when you use measurable, direct marketing and watch what transpires.

The book was a dissapointment. A long list of "bumper sticker" phrases is not my cup of tea. I guess some people like to read common sense advice over and over and over. Not me. Thanks,
