Educated arrogance as bad as ignorance.......2005-09-26
This book is overly opinionated, peppered with bitter pomposity, and simply melodramatic -- a real annoyance as it was required reading. One star for effort, another star for not being a page longer than it was.
Environmental Awareness..."Landscapes and Mindscapes.".......2004-03-08
David Orr has approached the subject of "Environmental Literacy" from a series of diverse perspectives. As a Professor of Environmental Studies at Oberlin College, and founder of the Non-Profit Meadowcreek Peoject, he has made a significant and thought-provoking contribution to the field of Contemporary Ecological LIterature. Orr sees "Sustainability," as being "about the terms and conditions of human survival," and that "this crisis can not be solved by the same kind of education that helped to create the problems."
The Author feels that the contemporary social problem of Alienation from the Natural world has reached a level which is unprecidented in Human History, and that our success in healing this "division" will be the difference between extinction or survival of the Human Race.
This book represents a an in-depth contribution to the growing field of Neo-Ecological Literature. Althought it is wtitten in an academic format, the concepts are clearly defincd, and written in an interesting readable style. This is a basic "Must Read" for anyone seriously interested in becoming "Ecologically Literate."
Offers educators a new view on how to teach ecologically.......1999-03-30
Orr has plenty to say about how the educational system can play a key role in ensuring that future generations better understand how to live in harmony with the earth. For example, on pp. 85-86, he writes, "The failure to develop ecological literacy is a sin of omission and of commission. Not only are we failing to teach the basics about the earth and how it works, but we are in fact teaching a large amount of stuff that is simply wrong. By failing to include ecological perspectives in any number of subjects, students are taught that ecology is unimportant for history, politics, economics, society and so forth. And through television, they learn that the earth is theirs for the taking. The result is a generation of ecological yahoos without a clue why the color of the water in their rivers is related to their food supply, or why storms are becoming more severe as the planet warms. The same persons as adults will create businesses, vote, have families, and above all, consume. Orr's book is a wake-up call to educators worldwide. It is a lesson on the value of integrative teaching strategies. His underlying message: Don't be an ecological yahoo.

Only includes some islands........2003-03-20
This book only covers the islands the author calls "The Lesser Antilles." I was mainly interested in the Dominican Republic, and its not even mentioned. Check the sample pages first for the Table of Contents to see if the islands you are interested in are included. Other than that, the information was OK.
Book Description
For more than three decades, Talal Asad has been engaged in a distinctive critical exploration of the conceptual assumptions that govern the West’s knowledges—especially its disciplinary and disciplining knowledges—of the non-Western world. The essays that make up this volume treat diverse aspects of this remarkable body of work. Among them: the relationship between colonial power and academic knowledge; the historical shifts giving shape to the complexly interrelated categories of the secular and the religious, and the significance of these shifts in the emergence of modern Europe; and aspects of human embodiment, including some of the various ways that pain, emotion, embodied aptitude, and the senses connect with and structure cultural practices. While the specific themes and arguments addressed by the individual contributors range widely, the essays cohere in a shared orientation of both critical engagement and productive extension. Note that this is not a festschrift, nor a celebratory farewell, but a series of engagements with a thinker whose work is in full spate and deserves to be far better known and understood.

Customer Reviews:
A nice manual for electrophysiologists.......2004-07-14
This book has virtually everything that most electrophysiologists (both beginning and experienced) need to know. It surprises me how much information can be found in this little book. Even though most chapters are quite detailed, somehow almost everything that needs to be discussed is discussed in so little space. A suggestion to beginning physiology students: Read the relevant chapters in this book before you start doing your experiments!

Environmental Modelling: Finding Simplicity in Complexity.......2007-05-13
The book is very informative and an useful addition for those who are engaged in teaching the environmental modelling - air, water, waste, solid etc.
The chapters are well written and very crisp in putting the matter in a very simple way.
The Title of the book justifies the author's theme and orientation in writing this book!

Book Description
With consummate craftsmanship, Mary Oliver has fashioned fifteen luminous prose pieces: on nature, writing, and herself and those around her. She praises Whitman, denounces cuteness, notes where to find the extraordinary, and extols solitude.

Carefully chosen, wild and precious words.......2001-05-29
Prior to reading this book, I had already read several volumes of Mary Oliver's poetry, as well as a book of her nonfiction. So I knew what to expect: beautifully concise language, lovely descriptions, and some insightful observations about the natural world and about life. What struck me most about this book was its similarity to the nonfiction of Annie Dillard, another of my favorite writers who deal with both the natural world and the craft of writing. Certain essays in this book reminded me of "Teaching a Stone to Talk," which is another book remarkable for its economical prose. I enjoyed learning some of Oliver's philosophies about the purpose of a writer, and I appreciated her observations about writers who inspired her, particularly Edna St. Vincent Millay and Walt Whitman. She writes well about everything from owls to deer to poetry, and it all comes across as effortless and seamless (though she shows us that the process itself is anything but smooth). I loved this book, although I would say that the best introduction to Mary Oliver is through her poetry: I recommend "White Pine" or "Dream Work." If you already like Mary Oliver, this book won't disappoint you!
THank you, Mary Oliver!.......2000-01-29
This book is exquisite. Thanks to Mary Oliver, I have begun to open my eyes, ears, and soul once more. Her poetry, all her observations, are so moving and her connection to life and what really matters has made me reexamine my own "wild and precious life." I wish I could thank Mary Oliver in person for her poetry and her dazzling insights!
M. Oliver speaks the absolute truth in only "A Few Words"........1997-08-02
Whatever you believe to be the truth you must read this book. Mary tugged at my heart so intently that I broke down and cried. She seems to possess a consciousness that eludes much of humanity and I wonder how did we let that happen. Mary offers no answers, but she stimulates thought and hopefully her writing will lead her readers to perhaps even conscious thought. I will read this book over and over and over again

Delightful unusual slice of Gold Coast (Australia) life.......2003-05-26
A delightful book about a young snobby girl who has to grow up when her father dies and she finds a grandfather she never knew.
She also has to learn a few things about herself in the process.
The true delight for me was the backdrop of he emerging Gold Coast region of australia before it became a tourist strip.
Beautifully developed characters, supported by beautifully developed descriptions.
A childhood favourite that I sought out again as an adult.
beautiful showing of human qualities.......2000-07-10
It is truly. At first she hated the grandfather that was dumped on her, then when they moved in together they became quite friendly. The beginning of this book is so boring, but don't give up on it, it gets better. The emotions shown in this book could all happen in real life, back in the eightees, since this book is a little old. But good read anyway. I recommend it to anyone who would like to read fiction about australia that isn't stereotyped. In it, the book has the main character just coming out of a boarding school, her dad she hardly knows has died, and she's just found out she has a grandad. They've inherited some property up north and go to live in it, her expecting to sell it as soon as possible, him wanting to settle down in his old childhood home. Try this book I recommend it.
