Book Description
Peter Marchand believes that winter is unfairly misunderstood, a season associated with "stillness, darkness, and death." Yet as each spring affirms, living things somehow manage to reappear. Since 1987, when the first edition appeared and was chosen by Library Journal as one of the year's 101 Best Sci-Tech Books, Marchand has been treating thousands of readers to a winter world that is very much alive. Now in this enlarged third edition, he offers a brand new chapter adding complete information on three major animal groups: northern cervids (deer, elk, moose, and caribou); semiaquatic mammals (beaver, otter, mink, and muskrat); and gallinaceous birds (grouse and ptarmigan). Experts and novices alike will find Life in the Cold indispensable and enjoyable.
Customer Reviews:
very neat book.......2001-08-06
I started wondering one day what do animals do in the winter? How does thgis whole cycle continue. Then I got on Amazon, did a search and came up with this book. Its neat! It tells you about different hibernation methods (for example some insects turn their body fluids into a sort of antifreeze!) It also tells about plants and how they cope. Pretty interesting.
A Thorough Explanation of Winter Adaptations.......2000-02-10
Thorough and scientific, this a good companion volume to Jim Halfpenny's excellent book on the same subject. Whereas Halfpenny's book is an excellent introduction for students and teachers of ecology, Marchand's book goes into more detail on physiological, behavioral, and biochemical adaptations to winter. It is therefore best suited to biology majors, graduate students, and naturalists with a desire for a complete explanation of how animals and plants adapt and survive in cold weather.
Have you ever wondered why insects don't freeze in winter?.......1997-11-26
A facinating overview of the biology of adaptation to winter. Of interest to students, teachers, and outdoors people who wish to understand interaction between life and the winter environment.

Good Book - Good prep for Step 1.......2006-03-29
This pre-test book was the only text I studied for cell biology in step one. It helped me out a lot and I did very well on that section of the exam. I recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Great review book for microscopic and gross anatomy.......2003-03-10
This PreTest includes many clinical questions and bridges cell biology, physiology, human anatomy, embryology, and an introduction to pathology. It was very useful during the anatomy courses and helped me to a 244 on USMLE I. I know, there isn't much pure histology on the boards, but this book helped me quickly review the microscopic and gross anatomical structure of the body and prepare for USMLE I. First Aid gave me a list of areas to emphasize, but it has errors and is too lightweight for those students who want to excel and do a first rate residency.

Book Description
For decades, readers and filmgoers alike have found the drama of submarine stories to be compelling and irresistible: men locked in steel cocoons, fighting the sea, the enemy, even themselves. There are sea chases, submarine wolf packs stalking their prey, stunning and numbing depth-charge attacks, survival epics, miraculous rescues, and journeys of exploration. Submarine tales inherently are filled with action, adventure, and vivid portraits of
extraordinary skill and courage in the face of agonizing death beneath the waves.
The Greatest Submarine Stories Ever Told will bring readers, in a single book, some of the most engaging and illuminating prose ever put on paper about submarines. These twenty tales are not just about torpedo and depthcharge attacks, vivid as those are. They are also about feats of exploration, such as the Nautilus nuclear sub surfacing at the North Pole; unusual military feats like the German attack on British ships at Scapa Flow; and the courage and teamwork used to carry out operations when the odds of success and survival seemed nil.
The distinguished works excerpted will include, among others: Sharks and Little
Fish; Nautilus 90 North; Torpedo Junction, Homer Hickam Jr.’s superb account of battles with U-boats off the Atlantic Coast in 1942; and accounts of famous submarine tragedies such as the losses of America’s Thresher and Russia’s K-19.
For readers who like tales brisk with pace and action and the feel of challenging
the seven seas,
The Greatest Submarine Stories Ever Told will be a much-anticipated new book.
Customer Reviews:
The Greatest Submarine Stories Ever Told: Dive! Dive! Fourteen Unforgettable Stories from the Deep .......2007-10-02
On a scale of 1 to 10 this book would be -5. Very very poorly written.
Author did not condense stories effectively. Critical events ended without some indication of the outcome. I have read many of the books retold in this book and the authors work is totally inadequate. I have returned the book for refund. Your policies are out standing. The book is really bad. I have about 125 submarine books, I served on 2 old boats in the late 50's. The authors work is a great disservice to those who risked (and many lost) their lives in service to our nation. Thank you.
The selection is great, however............2005-12-11
While the editor has done a very credible job of selecting examples of submarine stories, each book is represented by a relatively short excerpt (usually a single chapter). The potential reader must consider that he/she may have their appetite whetted for a particular book or books, but it will then be necessary to seek out a copy of those should there be a desire to read more. Such classics as "The Boat" (The basis for the movie "Das Boot"), Beach's "Run Silent, Run Deep", "The Hunt for Red October", and Calvert's "Silent Running" are presented, but the reader should recognize that these are excerpts, and not full-length stories nor condensations.
Great Colledtion.......2005-09-10
The history of the sea is filled with the stories of disasters. And that's about ships that are intended to stay on the surface. Submarines are intended to sink, and hopefully come back up.
This book is a collection of stories about submarines. Some of the stories are fiction, like an excerpt from 'Run Silent, Run Deep.' Some are true. Some are educated guesswork, like what was the real reason for the loss of the 'Thresher.'
The stories include:
Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson
The Hunt for Red October (Excerpt) by Tom Clancy
The Boat by Lothar-Gunther Buchheim
Run Silent, Run Deep by Cap. Edward L. Beach
Nautilus 90 North by Commander William R. Anderson
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne
Torpedo Junction by Homer H. Hickam
The Death of the USS Thresher by Norman Polmar
Silent Running by James F. Calvert
Due to Enemy Action by Stephen Puleo
A Time to Die by Robert Moore
The Enemy Below by D. A. Rayner
Raising the Hunley by Brian Hicks and Schuyler Kropf
The Terrible Hours by Peter Maas.
