If you're going to Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, or Colorado (or live there already), chances are you have an affinity for nature, in which case the National Audubon Society Field Guide to the Rocky Mountain States is a book you'll want to keep close at all times. A durable book meant to be consulted in the field and on the mountain, it starts off with a map of the region, and then launches into an overview of the topography and geology, the habitats and ecology, the weather patterns and cloud formations common to the Rocky Mountain region.
Part Two is the field guide proper, with brilliant photographs and pithily informative descriptions of over 1,000 of the flora and fauna to be found there, covering lichens and conifers, wildflowers and ferns, spiders and insects, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. There are vivid pictures of feral horses and mule deer, an elk cow nuzzling her calf and a male elk strutting with his antlers, and there are photos and write-ups for wolverines and mountain lions, moose, caribou, and bison. There are also wonderful pages full of whirligig beetles and margined burying beetles, hairy rove beetles and spotted tiger beetles, not to mention the jagged ambush bug and meadow spittlebug. The flora section is appealing, as well, with delicate western bog laurel and orange honeysuckle close-ups, cliff fendlerbush flowers and Pacific red elderberry, water smartweed and purple western monkshood. There's also an appendix of parks and preserves, and pages full of the constellations you can see at night with no city lights to mar the view. With a century of nature preservation under its belt, Audubon does justice to the field-guide genre. --Stephanie Gold

Customer Reviews:
Really useful guide.......2007-08-29
This is an essential guide book that no nature lover should be without. It includes sections on the flora and fauna of the region, plus lots of other useful information for outdoor sports lovers, including guides to all the national parks in the area. If you love hiking but don't know what birds or insects you're seeing along the route, this is the book for you--there are color pictures of all the creatures, with descriptions of their distinctive features, habitat, and behavior. Also, it's small enough that it can actually fit into your jacket, backpack or (large) pocket, so you won't be tempted to leave it at home.
Helpful guide.......2007-08-16
I just moved to Colorado, and this is a great, affordable option to buying separate guides for birds, trees, insects, and minerals. There is so much information packed into the book, and yet it is small enough to take on any hike.
Best field guide for your pack in most Rockies trips.......2004-10-27
This is not the most thorough of all field guides imaginable but it is easily the best that I can imagine that you could take with you in the field. It really is pocket-sized! It will fit in the shirt pocket of my long-sleeved flannel shirts, though it's too heavy (450pp.) to be entirely comfortable there. It fits better in roomy pants pockets, jacket pockets, or the side pocket of a day pack.
The book has everything, including some geology and habitat information as well as mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, birds and plants. It's exhaustive for the mammals that I've seen in the Rockies and nearly exhaustive for birds. It has good, small pictures of everything with information about ranges and seasons. There is plenty of information, clearly organized, to help you identify things that you see.
Very pretty, but kinda useless.......2003-08-10
First, the positive: this is a very complete and very pretty-looking guidebook. It does cover just about everything from the night sky to lichens and rocks. I can imagine an eastern tourist leafing through, anticipating all the wonderful things they'll see on their trip through Rocky Mountain National or Glacier park.
However, in the field, the guide is next to useless, as there are no keys, no list of the details and differences that make, for example, one tree a Ponderosa and another a Lodgepole pine. The only way to disern what exactly you are look through the book randomly until you happen upon a photo (generally too small to supply necessary detail) that looks kinda similar to whatever it is you are trying to identify.
This book is best at capturing the endless possibilities of our Rocky Mountains, a compendium of all the wonderful things you may run across. It won't however help you actually find them.
Audubon's Rocky Mt. States Field Guide: A great buy.......2000-06-14
As with all of the National Audubon Society's field guides, the "National Audubon Society Field Guide to the Rocky Mountain States" is a most worthwhile purchase, perfect as a gift or for your own collection. The guide is durable and very portable, which makes it well suited for use in the outdoors. More importantly, it has excellent content. Despite its small size, the field guide contains a wealth of information. In addition to the usual focus on flora and fauna species, there is information on constellations, parks, ecosystems, and more. While the depth and detail of the information in the various sections is not vast, the breadth of subject matter more than makes up for this; the information presented is ideal for a general field guide. Moreover, the book is beautiful, filled with gorgeous color photographs. Residents of the Rocky Mountain states and non-residents will both love it.

Nucleic Acids: Structures, Properties, and Functions
ASIN: 0387907610 |
Book Description
During the last decade the advances in molecular biology have increasingly emphasized the importance of the hydrogen bond in biological interactions. Hydrogen-bonding in assemblages of biological molecules examined from the structural point of view is a main focus of the present book. Hydrogen-bonding is thereby defined in its broadest sense, as many attractive interactions involving a covalently bonded hydrogen atom. The concept of the hydrogen bond structure is developed, as is the role of cooperativity, in stabilizing particular structures and hydrogen-bonding dynamics. The information presented is based on the extraordinary increase in quantitative structural data that has become available from X-ray and neutron diffraction studies of crystal structures involving small and large biological molecules. Included are structural data of particular types of hydrogen bonds as well as data for different types of molecules, such as carbohydrates, purines and pyrimidines, nucleosides and nucleotides, ices and hydrates, cyclodextrins, nucleic acids and proteins.

Book Description
The use of lasers for various applications in materials processing has grown rapidly in recent years. Lasers are by nature particularly well suited to automation, but to ensure repeatability and reliability, the engineers employing them must not simply rely on numerical analysis software. They must have a firm grasp on the physical principles involved. Mathematics of Thermal Modelling: An Introduction to the Theory of Laser Material Processing introduces the mathematics needed to formulate and exploit the physical principles important to modelling various aspects of laser material processing. The author shows how to gain insight by constructing and analyzing simple models. He demonstrates how to extract qualitative information from the models, how the underlying principles can be extended to more complex modelling, and how these principles can be applied to processes such as laser welding, surface treatment, drilling, and cutting. Written at a level accessible to graduate students, this book shows that simple mathematical investigation-- based primarily on analytical methods backed by relatively simple numerical methods--can greatly illuminate the processes being studied. Regardless of the stage of your career development, if you are confronting the modelling of thermal process in this field for the first time, Mathematics of Thermal Modelling will build the foundation you need.
Book Description
This reference grammar combines the best of modern and traditional approaches. Its objective is not only practical mastery of the language, but familiarity with its structure. The Grammar takes full account of modern linguistic research, but without excessive emphasis on formalism. It provides numerous examples based on the author's own experience of teaching French to English speakers. The norms of "correct expression" are given together with current usage and deviations. A substantial index of French and English words and of topics provides easy access to the text itself.

Don't know what to think........2006-08-13
I bought this book thinking "how complex can it be?"
There is a lot of stuff in this book, but way too advanced for a beginner.
I do not regret buying it, as one day I will know enough to make use of this book.
Do not buy this one if you are still learning the very basics like I am. It is not for us.
I don't know how advanced French students would feel.
if your @ an advanced level with fr.......2005-10-27
then i recommend a grammar written for fr ppl by fr ppl. Bescherelle is not bad. this book is overpriced and somewhat confusing although better that gainville price's published by blackwell. fr is an easy laguage for us anglophones. just apreciate the sublties and try to copy fixed paterns more then remembering abstracted grammaticle prescriptions and you'll fly through it aquiring a sound base in fr upon which you can suppliment with more vocabularies and literary structures. good luck friends!

Le meilleur livre de grammaire française (écrit en anglais).......2002-05-21
I have many French language books, but find myself returning to this reliable reference book whenever I want to look up something specific about the French language. It is well organized, and touches on many aspects of parts of speech. It clearly define rules and exceptions, and it offers examples of each. There is an extensive index which aids in research. This is the most thorough French grammar book I have seen that is written in English.
For more subtle points which are not mentioned in this book, I refer to Le Bon Usage (de M. Grevisse) which is THE French Language "Bible" ... Le Bon Usage is written entirely in French and offers many examples from famous works, and while it is the most thorough, I find it too complex at times. Most of the time I am able to find my answers in Advanced French Grammar.
I must warn that this book may seem a bit "overwhelming" at first (especially for the beginner), but I promise you'll soon become comfortable with it and then wonder how you ever managed without it ! I recommend this to any intermediate/advanced French student/language lover who is serious about learning and perfecting this beautiful language...
not for learning.......2002-01-08
This book is more of a book that explains how the language is used. It doesn't offer any examples or other tools to learn. In this case, if you already know French then half of this book is obsolete if you just going to converse on how the language works.

Customer Reviews:
Best self-guided language course in the market.......2007-07-04
For years, I have been studying several foreign languages, at different levels. In the process of doing so, I have utilized a variety of methods and tools for self-practice purposes, books on tape, CD courses, magazines, etc.
The "Living Language" series of Ultimate French courses has been, hands down, the best I have found. It is different from others in that each lesson provides a wealth of new vocabulary. The focus is a conversational one, rather than the "stiff", grammatically-centered and more traditional systems of foreign language instruction.
Each dynamic unit is comprised of an extensive thematic lesson/dialogue (relevant to today's world), followed by an explanation of the vocabulary, as well as, new phrases, verbs and grammattical structures.
The two sets of CDs mirror the manual's dialogues. One set is exclusively in French (with pauses for repetition). The other set, contains the English explanations. So, depending on your level of comfort with the language, you may choose which one to stick with.
I highly recommend this package for anyone interested in learning French (note: there is a beginner one, as well) or, if you simply want to utilize it as a "brush up" tool, like I now do.
Very disappointing........2006-10-04
I loved the first book (which is why I was surprised that all the Pimsleur lovers trashed it, but oh well). The first level has so much grammar and verb conjugations that it really makes you learn the language rather than just picking up a few phrases for survival travel. If you want to get a great start into French fluency, the Ultimate Beginner is definitely the way to go. That being said, The Advanced was extremely disappointing. There was little in the way of formal grammar (I guess they expect you to pick it up in the quick dialogues). Like most of the other reviewers, I found the dialogues to be not applicable in the real world (unlike the first level, which really does take you through some real life situations). It gives a though review of the first level grammar, but it really helps to be walked through it as they had done in the first level. You really are not introduced to new verbs the way a student on his own should be (like, once again, they had done in the first level). Sound quality is poor, but manageable. To further your French past the first level, I would reccomend the Living Language Verb Builder and the Vocabulary books. I work as a French teacher by the way, so I hope this helps.
Not very fun........2006-08-28
As are most living language materials, this course is boring.
I love French, I love learning it, but this course is about as exciting as reading a technical manual.
A lot of courses out there are fun to learn, make you laugh, and you find yourself WANTING to understand so you can enjoy the humor or out-of-context situations. (Like the book French Now!)
Plenty of useful info in this course, even more useful if you need something to put you to sleep.
'Advanced'?.......2004-06-13
I finished the Beginner-Intermediate Ultimate French and picked up a copy of Advanced. The only things advanced about this book were the dialogues--I was surprised and disappointed to find that a lot of the grammar in this book had already been covered in the beginner-intermediate version. Don't bother with this book. Chances are, if you're at an advanced level, it doesn't have much to teach you.
Useful but mixed.......2003-11-15
This is certainly a useful combination of text and audio but I don't think the authors got it quite right. The text is a little on the light side wrt grammar and the audio examples of "useful phrases" are very definitely odd.I work as a surgeon and I can't remember the last time I used the phrase "the doctors are talking about a liver transplant and possibly a bypass"! I guess the idea is to use examples of grammar rather than anything one might use in practice, but the utility of the work could have been improved with a little more care.
The grammar component was a useful summary but I would still recommend "En Bonne Forme" for early advanced studies.

Book Description
Grammar is not a four-letter word. Learning vocabulary is not a form of punishment. They are the basis of any language, and a student who wants more than a tourist's booklet of useful phrases will need to learn them sooner or later. The second edition of this popular little book takes the sting out of the exercise and even makes it a pleasant experience. By tackling issues not addressed in other texts or by doing so in a new way, we examine questions you will find novel and intriguing.
