Comprehensive and beautifully illustrated trailside refernce to plants, animals, and geology of an area that includes nine national parks and monuments
Customer Reviews:
Very informative guide.......2005-09-24
I recently visited Arches and Moab for the first time and picked up this book while down there. This is a great book to carry in your pack as you hike or bike and generally explore the area. There were some facets that I felt were lacking. I found a few plants that I could not identify using this guide, and the I wish that there would have been information regarding seedlings of plants listed in the book. Other than that this is a great book to carry with you, it is a little wide to carry in a pocket, but great for packs and has a very sturdy binding.
Best single "naturalist" reference for canyon county..........2004-04-22
If you can only take one book with you to the Colorado Plateau, this is it! It covers all the basics--wildflowers, animals and geology, as well as clear information and illustrations on topics such as cryptobiotic soil, desert varnish, pothole life and hanging gardens. It also has information on cacti, wildflowers, reptiles, birds, mammals and their tracks. For an "all-in-one" type of book, this is fabulous. After years and a dozen backcountry trips to the San Rafael Swell area in Utah, this is the book we grab when we want more information. It is the only book we put in one of our packs when we go on a hike or mountain bike ride. On a recent trip with family members who have never been to the area-- the book was indispensible. As we came across hanging gardens, potholes, cryptobiotic soil, desert varnish, lizards, bats, cacti, and wildflowers-- this guide provided the information we wanted, and it explained everything much better and more concisely than we could have done. For people interested in detailed information on specific topics like wildflowers or reptiles, then a more comprehensive guide would be a good companion to "A Naturalist's Guide to Canyon Country". (If you want information on hiking or canyoneering, then I would recommend books by Steve Allen and Michael Kelsy.) If you are going to the Colorado Plateau, take this book with you.
Excellent all-in-one guide.......2001-08-31
"A Naturalist's Guide to the Canyon Country" is an excellent overview of the natural history of the Colorado Plateau, and especially valuable for first time visitors and amateur naturalists. When my sister brought her family to visit this past June, we consulted this book every hour of every day. The adults and the children all found it invaluable for both identifying plants and animals and learning something about their life history. No, the guide is not all-encompassing, but most of the major players are here. I especially appreciated the inclusion of the little guys- especially the beetles lizards! We also appreciated the extremely sturdy binding, which held up well against all of the abuses that a 9-year-old could think of.
A Naturalist's Guide to Canyon Country.......2000-08-18
I have been visiting the four-corners every summer for 25 years and this is one of the most delightful books I have seen yet! In fact I just returned from my four-week summer 2000 trip and this Guide was my constant companion. Of the many guides and books I have collected over the years, this was the one that I carried in my Jeep, kept with me in my tent, and consulted on my hikes. As an academic biologist, I appreciate the accurate (and beautiful) paintings of the animals and plants that I routinely encounter on the Colorado Plateau. The selection of species is representative of those that a visitor will likely see.
And the one thing that distinguishes this guide from the many others I have is the inclusion of interesting, yet concise, information about the different species pictured. Many guides merely help identify, while this one tells you something about what is identified. Each night above my desert tent a common nighthawk performed as the Guide described: "While they dive and climb during courtship, wind moving across their wing feathers produces a 'booming' sound. This has led to another common name: bullblasts." So much better than just color, pattern, length, scientific name.
I have recommended this Guide already to anyone I know who is considering a first trip to the Colorado Plateau, and even to those who, as I have done, continue to visit canyon country every chance they get. The beautiful paintings alone are worth the price.

I love these books.......2007-05-25
Whereever your travels may bring you these series of books are the BEST travel books of all. They always have great suggestions of places to visit and are full of pictures too! I can't wait to use mine in Prague later this year!
Prague ( Eyewitness Travel Guide).......2007-05-23
all in one guide....a must have for geting the most out of a tour. You will be able to see the important items in your tour
Great Guide for Sightseeing.......2007-04-30
This is the one guide seen by far the most often in Prague. While it should drop the pretension of providing general information, it is by far the best guide available for getting out and seeing Prague.
Other than wasting space on hotels, my complaints are: 1) It fails to mention admission fees. For example there is a fee to see almost everything in both the Palace and the Jewish Quarter. This becomes obvuious early enough in the Palace but you can wander around most of the Jewish Quarter before realizing that you could simple buy one relatively expensive ticket, 2) It fails to tell where you really should spend your time despite being the best describer of detail - for example it should tell you that they have already largely destroyed what character is left in the Jewish Quarter (Hotel Intercontinental!?) and they are working on destroying the rest, and 3) The maps could be better.
With the Time Out guide for everything else and the Streetwise map this book will equip you well for your Prague visit.
Best way to LEARN and TOUR Prague.......2007-04-26
I went to Prague to visit a friend of mine who has been working/ living there for a year, and WE BOTH learned so much while toting this book. Great detail was given to explaining and describing the significance, history, and factoids of the most popular places in Prague. It was accurate, up to date, interesting, and well written. The maps are easy to use too. I just purchased a new Eye Witness book for my upcoming trip to Munich. This series is one which I will be sticking with!
Why this guide is the best..........2007-04-16
I used this guide on my recent trip to Prague and after numerous trips to the bookstores, I choose this book for the following reasons:
1) Large color pictures. Not only great to look at but helpful in identifying buildings that aren't necessarily labeled or labeled in English.
2) City is divided into sections. MUCH MORE USEFUL when walking around then having attractions listed by type. This just makes planning and improvising much easier.
3) Great walking tours and itineraries for 1-4 day trips.
Other then that this book is on par with the other heavy hitters in the other major travel guide categories. It goes into depth about Czech history, it has adequate explanations of major attractions, good descriptions of local customs, laws and transportation logistics and is just the right size for day packs.
The only minor drawback is the hotel and restaurant descriptions but with the internet, using a guide book for hotel/hostel booking has become obsolete.
Bottom Line: The price is little higher then average but it's worth it.

Book Description
Driving evolution forward, the Earth's physical environment has challenged the very survival of organisms and ecosystems throughout the ages. With a fresh new perspective,
Evolution on Planet Earth shows how these physical realities and hurdles shaped the primary phases of life on the planet. The book's thorough coverage also includes chapters on more proximate factors and paleoenvironmental events that influenced the diversity of life. A team of notable ecologists, evolutionary biologists, and paleontologists join forces to describe drifting continents, extinction events, and climate change -- important topics that continue to shape Earth's inhabitants to this very day. In a world where global change has become an international issue, this book provides a several billion-year evolutionary perspective on what the environment and environmental change means to life.
* Provides thorough background information on each topic while introducing cutting-edge research
* Features original material solicited from the leading minds in evolutionary biology and geology today
* Emphasizes the influence of massive geological forces - continental drift, volcanic activity, sea and tides
Customer Reviews:
Evolution on Planet Earth.......2004-04-28
The authors have done a splendid job of bringing the physical environment back into evolutionary studies. Geared toward educated laymen and high school through graduate level scholars, each chapter looks at a different physical environment, e.g., radiation, plate tectonics. Instead of all evolution being caused only by genetics, this book reminds us that all the forces of the universe shape life!

Customer Reviews:
OK.......2005-02-06
I used this book as supplementary material for review during a graduate course in marine hydrodynamics. I liked that it was compact and cheaper. But it's not really comprehensive enough for an introductory class.
Terrible Fluids Book.......2003-12-17
This book was used in my fluids class and was no help at all. The explanations are unclear and confusing, and there are very few examples. This book does not make a good class text or reference text. Do not buy this book. If you are an undergrad then buy Fluid Mechanics by Young et al. or Crowe et al., or if you want more buy Viscous Fluid Flow by White.
Save Your Money --- Don't Buy This.......2003-05-29
I bought a paperback version of this textbook a few years ago. There were many printing and typo errors (the top few lines on many pages were lost),and the quality of explanations in the textbook is disappointing for a group of authors from a supposedly distinguished university. Wanted to sell the book to recoup my loss but there was no market for it. Doesn't that speak volumes about this book?

Fluid mechanics for mathematicians.......1999-10-29
I would not recommend this book for any introductory fluid mechanics course because there are a lot of derivation steps as well as background information assumed by the author.
This is more of a mathematical approach to fluid mechanics as opposed to the more classical engineering approach.

An Introduction to Fluid Dynamics
ASIN: 0521274249 |
Book Description
How can the drag coefficient of a car be reduced? What factors govern the variation in the shape of the Earth’s magnetosphere? What is the basis of weather prediction? These are examples of problems that can only be tackled with a sound knowledge of the principles and methods of fluid dynamics. This important discipline has applications which range from the study of the large-scale properties of the galaxies to the design of high precision engineering components. This book introduces the subject of fluid dynamics from the first principles. The first eleven chapters cover all the basic ideas of fluid mechanics, explaining carefully the modelling and mathematics needed. The last six chapters illustrate applications of this material to linearised sound and water waves, to high speed flow of air, to non-linear water waves on channels, and to aerofoil theory. Over 350 diagrams have been used to illustrate key points. Exercises are included to help develop and reinforce the reader’s understanding of the material presented. References at the ends of each chapter serve not only to guide readers to more detailed texts, but also list where alternative descriptions of the salient points in the chapter may be found. This book is an undergraduate text for second or third year students of mathematics or mathematical physics, who are taking a first course in fluid dynamics.

GOOD!.......2000-02-08
Though I read only one chapter, I am very satisfied with this book. I think this book is also invaluable to engineer who want to know mathematical subjects behind fluid dynamics. I wanna read this book thoroughly.
superior fluids book for math and physics students.......1999-02-05
This is a great fluids book. And the previous reviewer needs to take a calulus class or something before going to try and read grownup books. Long live paterson!
This book is really hard for engineering students........1998-05-02
It is full of mathematical manipulation without the actual physical feeling of fluid dynamics. It has the language of someone reminding you of what you already know instead of teaching something new.

Book Description
A concise account of various classic theories of fluids and solids, this book is for courses in continuum mechanics for graduate students and advanced undergraduates. Thoroughly class-tested in courses at Stanford University and the University of Warwick, it is suitable for both applied mathematicians and engineers. The only prerequisites are an introductory undergraduate knowledge of basic linear algebra and differential equations. Unlike most existing works at this level, this book covers both isothermal and thermal theories. The theories are derived in a unified manner from the fundamental balance laws of continuum mechanics. Intended both for classroom use and for self-study, each chapter contains a wealth of exercises, with fully worked solutions to odd-numbered questions. A complete solutions manual is available to instructors upon request. Short bibliographies appear at the end of each chapter, pointing to material which underpins or expands upon the material discussed.

Book Description
It was from his experience on the Mississippi that Samuel Clemens took his nom de plume — Mark Twain, the call used by riverboat pilots when taking soundings of the river. The nom de plume was especially appropriate for Clemens, reflecting both his love of the Mississippi and his wry sense of humor. This Library of Literary Classics edition contains his best works including: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Prince and the Pauper, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.
This deluxe edition is bound in padded leather with luxurious gold-stamping on the front and spine, satin ribbon marker and gilded edges. Other titles in this series include: Charlotte & Emily Bronte: The Complete Novels; Edgar Allan Poe: Selected Works; William Shakespeare: The Complete Works; Charles Dickens: Four Complete Novels; Lewis Carroll: The Complete, Fully Illustrated Works; and Jane Austen: The Complete Novels.
