Book Description

Foreword by Ralph Roberts, Publisher There are things you can collect in these old, old mountains that have greater age than antiques. Far greater age. Eons old, and these treasures lie beneath your feet, in the ground, the ancient ground.

Rick Jacquot has knowledge of these vastly old artifacts of the earth's creation and its growing pains through millions of long years, now gone. He has searched over mountain and through bramble-choked glen to find the best places, those hallowed, secretive locations yielding the best in specimens of rock, mineral, and-oh yes!-sparkling gemstones. Some of these specimens can be valuable, others precious in the learning of geological lore they impart. All have a story to tell.

Often hunters of rocks maintain their secrets as closely as any fisherman protecting that piece of stream where the big trout grab for any hook that comes near the water. Rick does not, he shares it here with you, even to giving GPS coordinates!

When Rick brought this book idea to me, I turned out to be an easier sell than he had thought. My father and I spent many happy hours in the pursuit of the not-always-elusive rock. My cousins-Jack Ball and his son Jackie-have ownership of the Little Pine garnet mine in Madison County where my grandfather, George Roberts, was foreman back in its heyday before World War II. I love these mountains-what is on them, in them, and what makes them up. So we, in much pride, add this book to our Land of the Sky series.

This book includes:

Introduction

intro by Rick Jacquot, Author The Western North Carolina area has been mined/prospected off and on for a variety of gems and minerals as far back as the 16th century. I can only imagine what it must have been like to be one of those early prospectors, to be the first one to discover a gem bearing pegmatite or to find gem quality rubies and sapphires in the local creekbeds. Commercial/Systematic mining for various minerals began in the 1700s and in 1871 C.E. Jenks opened the first gem corundum mine.

Over the years, improved mining techniques uncovered many more rich gem and mineral deposits. Unfortunately gem production was too low to justify continued commercial mining, mineral mines began to close as imported minerals began to be shipped into the area, it was cheaper to import the minerals from a foreign country than to mine them locally.

(left: GEM QUALITY ALMANDINE GARNETS FROM THE LITTLE PINE MINE, MADISON COUNTY)

Today the gem mines you find are tourist mines/attractions, these mines are enriched with foreign material to keep the customers happy, most are located in the Cowee Valley and the Spruce Pine area, there are a few mines which provide all native material and I have listed them in this book. There are still some active commercial mines/quarries in Western North Carolina, limestone, talc, feldspar, quartz, pyrophyllite and spodumene, are just a few of the minerals mined.

The Western North Carolina area is still a rockhound's dream, if you know where to look. I moved here in 1987 and began collecting in this area in 1989. One thing I have learned about rockhounds is that they are tight-lipped about collecting sites, they do not want anyone to know where their secret hole is at, and if by chance you do get some information from them, you have to swear on your life, and promise to forfeit your firstborn child if you ever tell anyone about the secret location. This can become very frustrating, fortunately I met a local rockhound who had been collecting in the area for over thirty years and he did not mind sharing his information. I was lucky, and as my interest in the hobby grew, I began to meet more people who knew about more sites. Unfortunately many people do not get that chance, I am sure many aspiring rockhounds have simply given up the hobby for lack of interest because they could not find anyone willing to share information with them.

There are thousands of mines and prospects in the Western North Carolina area containing many gems and minerals that would be of interest to collectors. Many of these mines are on state or federal property but the locations to them have been lost over time and are waiting to be rediscovered, many more are on private land and the owners do not allow collecting. Many of the active mines and quarries in the area will not let anyone in to collect mineral specimens, they site safety reasons, government rules and regulations, etc. This book was written by a rockhound for rockhounds new and old.

(right : EMERALD CRYSTALS FROM THE CRABTREE EMERALD MINE, MITCHELL COUNTY)

I have listed as many sites that I know of that are open to collecting, some of these sites are active mines/quarries, some are the remains of old pegmatite/mica/feldspar/gem mines that have been closed for years, and a few are more recent discoveries made by myself and some fellow rockhounds in the area. I have also included several close sites that are in Georgia, Tennessee, and farther east in North Carolina. I feel you should have the opportunity to collect at these sites while in the area. I have tried to make finding the sites as easy as possible with detailed directions and maps.

The odometer on my vehicle was used to the tenth of a mile to measure some of the distances in this book, your odometer may vary slightly from mine so keep this in mind while traveling to a particular site. Remember to always respect the property of others, if you dig a hole make sure to fill it before you leave and always carry out any trash you bring in and any trash you see left by others, doing this will help to insure future collecting at these locations. If you are new to the hobby I hope this guide will help you along the way to find many beautiful specimens for your collection, if you've been around a while I hope you will find some useful information here that is new to you.

Many of the sites listed in this book are commercial mines or quarries or roadside locations that are easily found with the street directions and maps I have provided. Most of the commercial mines and some of the quarries have signs directing you to the site when you are within a few miles of the location, but as many more are in remote hard to find locations. You should have no problem finding these sites with the directions given, as an extra tool, if you have a portable GPS unit I have included the coordinates for the more remote locations to assist with finding these sites.

While researching this book over a two-year period I visited all the locations listed. I try to visit these locations as often as possible to collect specimens for my collection and I have always been granted permission to collect at the sites on private property. But collecting status changes and property is bought and sold, you should always get permission from the property owner before collecting on private property, this shows respect for the owner and helps to allow future collecting at these sites.

5 out of 5 stars Adding to the addiction..........2007-04-30

I purchased this book after having visited a mine or two in the state. It is written in a manner that makes one eager to take a weekend and do nothing but mine. That is what I am going to do soon, with this book in tow.

4 out of 5 stars Good book but no color pictures........2007-01-31

The info in this book is good. It gives directions and GPS info and other good info. BUT in this day and age there is really no excuse for just having black and white pictures in this kind of book. In black and white all the rocks look very similiar to me. If they would just add color pictures I would rate it 5 stars instead of just 4. I still recommend this book but not as your only one for this area. Get it to compliment others.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!.......2005-08-10

Words cannot begin to describe how excellent this book is for anyone who has ever dreamed of uncovering their very own treasure trove of gems! After purchasing it, I found emeralds at the very first location I visited. On my second trip, I came home with my truck so loaded with incredible specimens that my shocks creaked and groaned for the entire ride. Then, inside the third mine that I decided to check out, I met the author. He was prying gigantic garnets out of the walls of the mine, and enthusiastically shared his knowledge and techniques with me. My house and yard are now decorated with an amazing array of gems and minerals. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in searching for gems. A five star rating is too low. This book deserves at least ten stars, and probably more!

5 out of 5 stars american living in turkey- great guide.......2007-10-15

Come ivsit Turkey and use Lonely Planet to help you with your tour! I have lived in Turkey for a year. The Lonely Planet goes everywhere with us...it is worn and bent and highlighted and marked up and excellent. We have been completely happy with all the suggestions from LP. Here is the thing. Turkey is a fabulous country, however, there are a few things LP cannot control.

        1. The prices are inaccurate but that is not LPs fault. The Lira is very unstable and has had an outragous inflation rate. Also, you have to be good at bargaining to get a good rate and most of us Westerners are uncomforatble with this.

        2. Directions/ getting around....the majority of Turks rely on public transportation. There are VERY FEW road signs if you are driving. LPs maps are great, but unfortunately hard to follow without signs. I know people are sometimes frustrated with the bus routes...they can be inconvienent and drop off in the middle of the night, and hard to find your way around if you don't speak Turkish....again not LPs fault. Just keep asking for someone who speaks English to help you and the hospitable people of Turkey will find someone.

I find LPs history background one of the best things about it. It is just enough to get you interested in seeing a place and you can supplement it by GOING to the museums. We have been 100% satisfied, but you must have realiztic expectations.

5 out of 5 stars This book covered all areas of my interest.......2007-06-06

From pensions to informative summaries on the ruins this book covered all basis. The guide was accurate in their description of places and allowed us to travel around freely without assistance even though we had only about 20 words of Turkey under our belt. It came back well worn and happy.

5 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Turkey--great preparation for your trip.......2006-11-04

This book provides a well rounded view of the country, from its history and culture to the best places to stay, eat and shop. It's easy to read and navigate and a great help in planning a trip.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as other Lonely Planet.......2006-10-07

As a disclaimer, I am a huge fan of the Lonely Planet travel guides. I like to travel, and have lately traveled to quite a few countries following recommendations from Lonely Planet. Just before going to Turkey, I was in Greece "with Lonely Planet".

Compared to other Lonely Planets, this book on Turkey is weak and the part about Istanbul in particular has been a disappointment.

My comments apply to the 9th edition published in April 2005. I have sent very specific comments to Lonely Planet, and I do certainly hope that future editions will improve on the weaknesses of the 9th edition.

The bottom line is that if you are looking for a travel guide to Turkey, you might still want to consider getting the Lonely Planet, but I recommend you shop around and also look closely at other alternatives.

1 out of 5 stars Inaccurate and out-of-date.......2006-10-03

This guide is seriously out of date. This applies not only to prices, and relative prices, but also to critical information about what is available and how to find it. Having used it (Sept., 2006), my advice is not to rely on it without checking independently that what it says is available and how to get there is correct. Otherwise you may find that you have been expensely (in time or in money) misled. Since you should check with other sources, you might as well simply forget this guide, which is one of the worst I have ever used. Its recommendations about what is worth seeing and the state of hotels, while often useful, can also be wildly wrong.

                  Book Description

Mammalian and Avian Transgenesis presents a collection of novel methods for the production of a wide range of transgenic animals. The manual focuses largely on mice, but also contains protocols for successful transgenesis in rats, cows, pigs and birds.

The manual provides detailed, step-by-step protocols covering all aspects of the production of transgenic animals, including the use of lentiviral vectors in gene transfer, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, nuclear transfer, large insert transgenesis, conditional gene expression systems, the use of reporter genes in transgenesis and transgenesis in large animals and birds. The text is supplemented by superb color photos. While the focus is on newly established techniques, the fundamental methods of transgenesis are also covered for those new to the field. Thus this manual is perfectly suited for those wishing to adopt new technologies in transgenesis.

                        Book Description

Turbulent flow is a most important branch of fluid dynamics yet its complexity has tended to make it one of the least understood. Empirical data have been appearing rapidly for more than twenty years but a consistent theory of turbulent flow based on the results has been lacking. The original edition of Dr Townsend’s book was the first to attempt a systematic and comprehensive discussion of all kinds of turbulent motion and to provide a reliable analysis of the processes which occur. The theory and associated concepts are applied to the description of a variety of flows: free turbulent flows such as wakes and jets, wall flows in pipes and boundary layers, flows affected by buoyancy forces such as heat plumes and the atmospheric boundary layer and flows with curved streamlines. This monograph will appeal to practitioners and researchers in engineering, meteorology, oceanography, physics and applied mathematics. This paperback edition was first issued in hard covers in 1976 as a complete revision, taking into account developments since 1955, of the first edition. It will be useful as an advanced text in applied mathematics, and the other disciplines mentioned above.

                              Book Description

The existence and crucial role played by large-scale, organized motions in turbulent flows are now recognized by industrial, applied and fundamental researchers alike. It has become increasingly evident that coherent structures influence mixing, noise, vibration, heat transfer, drag, etc. This volume contains selected papers from the IUTAM symposium entitled `Eddy Structure Identification in Free Turbulent Shear Flows' which was held in Poitiers, France, October 12--14, 1992. The purpose of the IUTAM symposium was to address some important questions, which are documented in this volume:
                            • What is the state of the art of structure identification?
                            • How do these approaches work?
                            • How do the results from different techniques compare with one another?
                            • What kind of information can be obtained from the various methods (e.g., instantaneous results, vorticity, averages, statistics, etc...)?
                            • What are the new directions in detection methods and, correspondingly, what are their implications for turbulent flow analysis and prediction methods? £/LIST£ This book will contribute to the knowledge of coherent structure identification processes and will help guide future experimental, numerical and theoretical research in this area. Turbulence researchers will find this volume an invaluable reference.

"The empire, long divided, must unite; long united, must divide. Thus it has ever been." Echoing the rhythms of Chinese history itself, the monumental tale Three Kingdoms begins. As important for Chinese culture as the Homeric epics have been for the West, this fourteenth-century masterpiece continues to be loved and read throughout China today. Three Kingdoms portrays a fateful moment at the end of the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 220) when the future of the Chinese empire lay in the balance. Fearing attacks by three rebellious states, the emperor sent out an urgent appeal for support. In response, three young men - the aristocratic Liu Xuande, the fugitive Lord Guan, and the pig butcher Zhang Fei - met to swear eternal brotherhood and fealty to their beleaguered country. Their vow set in motion the series of events that ultimately resulted in the collapse of the Han. Writing centuries later, Luo Guanzhong drew on, often-told tales of this turbulent period to fashion a sophisticated narrative of loyalty and treachery, triumph and defeat, that came to epitomize all that was best and worst in the life of his country. Illustrated.

                                5 out of 5 stars Truly China's greatest novel!.......2007-09-14

When I first read Three Kingdoms it was quite a confusing story, what with all the endless characters that came and went, not to mention the impossibility of pronouncing their names properly!

Nonetheless, I was captivated by the quality of the story, despite the very basic narrative style (being hundreds of years old) and the fairly simple way it must have been translated.

With the amount of trials and tribulations that the reader witnesses in following the extremely incredible characters, it is no wonder that these real people from history mean so much to people today, nearly two thousand years later.

Containing personalities of all kinds, Three Kingdoms offers so much wisdom and excitement, that once you get past the first couple of chapters, you are really drawn into a whole new world.

To follow the struggles of men like Guan Yu, Cao Cao and Zhuge Liang as they fight for peace amongst the absolute chaos, gives hope and solutions to any of the problems one can face in today's world.

Yet there are hundreds of characters who fight by their sides in attempts to reunite China, each having their own story to contribute to this immortal saga. It is truly a credit to Luo Guanzhong the way he managed to interweave so many storys, and yet stay prevalently factual.

If you can get past the confusion and the slight redundancy of the narrative style, Three Kingdoms is a story you have to read within your lifetime, and preferably as soon as possible.

According to DW3K.COM, there is a new version of Three Kingdoms that is to be released soon, designed to be more entertaining and less confusing than the 600 year old original. Apparently it will still contain all of the wisdom from Luo Guanzhong's, but will make a much more accessable and hopefully even more enjoyable way to learn about Three Kingdoms.

In the meantime I can also suggest the other 3 chinese classics, in english known as Dream of the Red Chamber/Dreams of Red Mansions(Romance), Monkey King/Journey to the West (Adventure/Fantasy) and Water Margin/Outlaws of the Marsh (Adventure). Each are incredible stories in their own right, and are in many ways equal or even better than Three Kingdoms/Romance of Three Kingdoms.

4 out of 5 stars Great read, horrible spelling........2007-09-13

Three Kingdoms is one of the most important works of Chinese literature. The story itself if there, but the ridiculous amount of grammatical and spelling errors throughout the 4-volume set can spoil the experience just a bit.

5 out of 5 stars Three Kingdoms review by Mombo.......2007-07-20

This book is based on the critical time at the end of the Han Dynasty. It all starts with the Yellow Scarves Rebellion lead by Zhang Jiao and his two brothers, Zhang Bao and Zhang Liang , plung the land into complete chaos. Answering the call of duty, three sworn oath brothers , Liu Bei , Zhang Fei , and Guan Yu , go to fight the menece, along with thousands of others. After that was done , Dong Zhuo , an Imperial General, was controling the Emperor like a puppet. Him and his mighty step son, Lu Bu , take control of the Imperial Court. To Stop these traitors , many great generals, Including Cao Cao , Sun Jian , Liu Bei , and many more with the chosen leader, Yuan Shao, destroy these verman. From these events comes a chain of cause and effect that, basicly , leads to the collapseof the , once great , Han Dynasty . Best book I've ever read, EVER. On a scale of 1 to 10 I'd give it a 15.

Even if they don't like histoy, they should still find theis to be a great read.

5 out of 5 stars How to maximise the enjoyment of this tour de force.......2007-01-29

I first became familiar with the Three Kingdoms period through the video game "Romance VII" (on PS2). Through the game, I was able to understand what each charecter is capable of doing, which illustrated a clear narrative of the basic concepts involved. After playing "Romance VIII" & "Romance X", I more or less understood what the novel had to offer. After playing these games, I decided to go to the main source - the novel. While reading the novel, I started associating the images and scenarios from the games with the text. Although you will know how most events will unfold, the endless names, ranks, locations and procedures, will make sense; which without, you will be bored to death. So to sum things up, I highly recommend you play some of the romance games (in particular "Romance X") so to know how significant some events (like the meeting of the brothers, or the battle with the 'strongest man under heaven') are.

One has to marvel at the prolific writing skills of dear Barbara . I once owned a horse that refused to eat its oats , but would gnaw cheerfully ,on a Barbara Cartland book ,then tap dance for hours ,with a rose between its teeth .The sheer romance of her work enthralls , even those of us with four feet .In this delightful book we are transported to the world of Dukes and there Coconut carvings . The Duke who married a fire engine ,never laugh at a bowl of stewed prunes , and a touch of an unemployed town crier . All three are little pebbles in the hillwalkers boot . OH I do wish Henry would stop pestering the gardeners daughter .

For all you cynics who belive that romance is dead , perhaps it was not your partner . After all you had been working hard that week , and even if it was , how can you be so sure ,that checking into a motel as mr and mrs smith for two hours , was in any way suspicious . Dear old Barbara would put your mind at rest.and in these perfumed pages ,our old hearts are set to flutter as love blossoms . First its a good old fashioned tale of passion and hatred , between Lord Cockbury the seventh earl of undergarb ,and his fiery half gypsy half aubergine dentist . The tale ends as you would expect from such romantic fiction ,with the two lovers .fighting a naked duel on the Westminster bridge at midnight ,with only a few out of date tomatoes dying in the snow along with the lovers . Sob sob I can not continue its all too heart renching . My only complaint with these stories ,is that far too often the villain of the piece ,turns out to be wearing thermal underwear ,all the better for hiding tropical fish I suppose .

3 out of 5 stars Three complete novels of Barbara Cartland.......2000-06-23

It was cute as usally. Typical of a Barbara Cartland book. If you read Barbara Cartland book before you will realised that she is an author that stresses love will conquer all philosophy. Unfortunately, she tends to write very little and tends to be brief to the point. These stories are very consise and moving for your emotions. You will not put it down until you are done. But by the time you are done reading it you will likely say that is it. Where is the rest of it. These stories are great but most of the time it leaves the reader wanting to read more about it even though it is the ending. These stories are way to short but they always gurantee you a happy and charming ending.

3 out of 5 stars three complete novels of Barbara Cartland.......2000-06-23

This book was sweet and short. It pulled me more in the emotional sense. Too bad it was short. The plot seemed to easy and there was really no conflict for the main characters to solve but sept for their feelings for one another. But anyway I did like it because it kept me up all night and I could not put it down.

5 out of 5 stars For the romantic at heart (cynics please abstain).......2000-05-25

The first time I read a Barbara Cartland book, I was transported, as she would write, like an angel up to heaven! Her stories are a combination of the "Contesse de Ségur" books I loved as a child and the "Angélique" movies I still love as a woman. I love the way she writes. Perhaps I am old-fashioned, but her tales of innocence and tenderness touch me on a fundamental level.
