Magical Illustrations.......2006-10-26
Dena's illustrations are so captivating. The personalities really come thru with the wonderful expressions of the Poodle Princess. If you are a fan of Dena's artwork this book will not disappoint you.
What a great new addition to our book shelf!.......2006-10-20
As a mom of a pink princess obsessed 4yr. old, this book is right up her alley! The story is fun and well written. I love this Sassie character! The illustrations are bright and eye catching, such a fun and whimsical book that my daughter hasn't let out of her sight! (let alone, let her younger sister even touch!) We've even decided we're going to buy another copy to donate to her preschool so they can fall in love with it as well!
One of the best children's book illustrations I have ever seen... BRAVO!!.......2006-10-19
I have been a fan of Dena's work for years. Sassafras's illustrations manage to capture the emotions of the spoiled pink poodle perfectly. The illustrations are colorful, whimsical, and utterly delightful. Some of the best children's book illustrations I have ever seen, and it is now my two children's absolutely favorite book.
Sassie is fabulous.......2006-10-12
I absolutely LOVED Sassafrass. It perfectly captures in a comedic way how success can change and warp a personality, and how when a person (or a dog) starts to believe her own publicity, she can lose track of who she really is. Staying true to yourself and keeping your head on straight in good times and in bad is a great message for children and adults. And this tale is told with such a light touch--that it's like eating a chocolate souffle! Brava Sassie! You are adorable!
Terrific Charmer.......2006-10-12
This is a must-read for your kids! They will be enthralled by the story, with characters you too will enjoy!
Book Description
LuLu and Maxie are sisters, two dogs who've become an artistic passion for photographer Nancy LeVine. For nearly a decade, she's chronicled their lives and, in the process, opened a window into the relationship between canines and their world and what dogs can teach us about ourselves. In A Dog's Book of Truths, LeVine pairs her stunning duotone images with the insightful words of poet Joseph Duemer. The results range from humorous to profound. As one dog looks purposefully into the camera: "Some dogs are comic geniuses precisely because they take the world so seriously." Another dog, alone on a subway train: "To lose a dog's trust is to fail the soul." When several dogs tussle over a stick: "A dog will run in circles or chase sticks endlessly not out of mindlessness but from energy and delight in her existence."Throughout the pages of A Dog's Book of Truths, LeVine's photos resonate with clear glimpses at those unself-conscious moments that transcend superficiality and artifice. Dog lovers will relish this book for its honesty and verve, while photography lovers will find its images unparalleled takes on dogs at their most natural. Everyone else will find the philosophical union between dog and human a mostcompelling subject. A Dog's Book of Truths is a must-have volume for everyone interested in more fully exploring the mysteries of life.

For Aussie Lovers.......2007-05-12
Being 'owned by' an Aussie myself, this book captures not only wonderful photographs and doggy sayings but the beauty of Australian Shepherds.
I bought two!!! One for my shelf and a gift for my Aussie's girlfriend's Mom!
I docked it a star only for the fact that the pictures aren't identified ... doesn't say the name of the dogs or were it was taken!
P.S - Ms. LeVine will donate $2.50 per book to ARPH. Please mention ARPH when you order!
Soulful.......2007-05-12
I challenge someone to look through this book and not feel connected to these dogs. The author/photographer managed to capture these Australian Shepherds at their most carefree moments, when the soul of these dogs are truly present. If you haven't seen an "Aussie" before, you are missing out. They are the most beautiful, loving animals, and their eyes say it all. My favorite photo is where the Aussie and it's owner are hugging - because that is truly the relationship you develop with this breed. I'm thankful for this book, while it's not a photographic journal about my own Aussie, it is one the definitely represents the breed well.
A little disappointed.......2007-05-03
This is a slim book that is very nicely presented and on good quality paper. I'll have to say however that it disappointed me in the quality and subject of the author's photographs. We have Aussies as household companions and in my opinion there are a number of pictures of her dogs with plainly unhappy expressions on their faces. It's not something that gives me pleasure to look at. In addition there are far too many pictures that are blurry/out-of-focus. I have to think this was an attempt at "art" but it just looks like bad photography to me.
Gets Close to the Viewpoint of a Dog.......2003-02-11
Photographer Nancy LeVine spent the better part of a decade capturing images depicting her pair of Australian Shepherd sisters, LuLu and Maxie, in all kinds of settings, from romping on the seashore to riding in a car, and all kinds of moods, from frenzied activity to measured serenity. Her crisp duotone images are honest, natural, real moments, unlike the contrived artifices other animal photographers such as William Wegman employ.
Hence, Ms. LeVine presents a deep yet subtle vision of how these dogs experience the world and interact with other dogs and with their humans. (If you have never owned an Aussie, it's possible you may not fully appreciate the genius of her photographs and her subjects.) Sometimes the "truth" shines in the dog's eyes or reveals itself in an image of a dog unabashedly having fun. I'm not sure if there are any high-minded lessons here, but something of the exuberance and intensity these dogs experience transcends the pages.
Poet Joseph Duemer contributes extraordinary, insightful phrasing that melds seamlessly with the mood of each photograph and the combination celebrates fully the Zen of dogs. He offers just enough detail and form without trying to manipulate or dictate emotions and perceptions.
Folks who do not share their lives with canines will find this book entertaining. Those who do will find it magical, and, among this group, those who have Aussies of their own will keep this well-crafted and well-designed book within easy reach.
Beautiful, sensitive photos.......2002-11-06
I had always known that dogs were really sensitive human beings in fur coats, but I had never seen photographic proof until I saw this book.
'Ae, he mea 'ilio pono kela. These are wise dogs.

Book Description
"Introduction to Scientific Programming" was developed over a period of two years at the University of Utah Department of Computer Science in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Energy-funded Undergraduate Computation in Engineering Science (UCES) program. To encourage the integration of computation into the science and engineering curricula, an introductory course in computing was designed expressly for science and engineering students. This course was created to satisfy the standard programming requirement, while preparing students to immediatly expliot the broad power of modern computing in their sicence and engineering courses. The course has at least four distinguishing features: - It uses a sumbolic mathematics package (Mathematica) in combination with a conventional programming language (C). - It teaches programming concepts in parallel with a scientific problem-solving methodology. - It draws upon a variety of computational problems from the breadth of science and engineering to interest students and establish the relevance of the computational problem-solving approach. - The author has developed an extensive suite of interactive, on-line laboratory materials that students can use via any HTML viewer. All of the "Introduction to Scientific Programming" notes are available on -line and contain a number of embedded interactive URLs.
Customer Reviews:
Step by step but can be confusing.......2007-09-20
I had this recommended to me as a good tool to teach beginning note-reading and I've found the book is indeed step-by-step, i.e. it spends a lot of time teaching higher and lower, and then steps and skips on the staff.
What I don't like is that it introduces an incomplete staff to start, and students are expected to read only steps and skips, going up and down. For a long time students are reading notes on one, two, or three lines, before the entire 5-line staff is shown. There is no correlation to the treble or bass clefs, the beginning note is indicated afresh for each song. I've found this to be confusing for some beginners. What is more, the actual music in this book sounds chintzy and simplistic because it revolves so much around two and three notes.
I prefer the Hal Leonard series for teaching note-reading; in presenting the clef at once it is actually simpler to read, their pages are colorful but less distracting, and Hal Leonard does a great job of using good-quality music. I think having children play a good-sounding tune is inspiring for them and keeps them more motivated than playing ditties revolving around two or three notes, as they feel they are playing actual music.
Great Choice for Young Children!.......2006-09-23
My son is in first grade and using the first book - we love it! This method does a great job of teaching how to count the beats for each type of note. When I was a child, that was what I had the most trouble with. Looking back at the old books I used, it's no wonder! The first song in my old book included quarter, half and whole notes, with a full staff. Time to Begin introduces just one new thing in each lesson, so my son is able to get through a few 'songs' each week and feel that he is progressing well. That makes him much more agreeable about practice time since he's not just staring at the same piece for 30 minutes. He used the Alfred book in kindergarten and prefers the new one. The little characters Chip and Bobo (who give practice tips and a bit of theory for each lesson) are cute! Presentation counts for a lot at this age.
