William Pitt commissioned them. Alexander Pope collected them. The Prince of Wales bribed their makers to stop them from being produced. Not even the most respected and sharp-penned political cartoonist of our time wields the influences, or, it could be argued, possesses the artistic skills of the satirical engravers of England in the 18th century who elevated caricature to the level of high art. Diana Donald, a professor of art history at Manchester Metropolitan University in England, illuminates the art and meaning of more than 200 etchings by the top practitioners of the day (Rowlandson, Gillray, the Cruikshank brothers) as well as less-skilled amateurs and professionals who were popular once but are now mostly forgotten.
Book Description
The late eighteenth century in England was the first great age of cartooning, and English caricature prints of the period have long been enjoyed for their humor and vitality. Diana Donald presents the first major study of these caricatures, showing that they were a widely disseminated form of political expression and propaganda as subtle and elegant as the written word.

"Becoming An Electronics Technician" Delivers!.......2003-05-28
"Becoming an Electronics Technician" contains everything you need to determine if being an electronics technician is for you and how best to go about learning how to be an electronics technician.
The book begins by covering what it means to be an electronics technician. This section describes the wide variety of work electronics technicians do, from medical electronics to industrial electronics and communications electronics to computer electronics and much more. Each of these different fields offer their own challenges and opportunities for excellent careers. The book continues with an overview of today's electronics workplace and look into the future, as well a review of what electronics technicians need to know to succeed. The introductory section closes with profiles of five actual electronics technicians, describing the kinds of challenges each faces.
The second section of the book discusses how to become an electronics technician. The various ways of gaining the required education are reviewed, followed by strategies for making the most of your classroom experience and things you can do beyond the classroom to prepare you to succeed as an electronics technician. There is an excellent discussion of the value of technician certifications and an entire chapter on information technology certifications, with emphasis on the A+ Certification. The section wraps up with advice on finding, getting, and keeping that important first electronics technician position.
The final section of "Becoming an Electronics Technician" introduces the reader to the electronics field. Starting with a discussion of the various methods of 'breadboarding' electronics circuits; a crucial step in learning how the circuits used in electronics devices work. The book continues with tips on troubleshooting circuits, information on how various electronic transducers work, and a short course on solid-state electronic components. There's an excellent chapter on electronics safety, from electrical shock to hazards from electronics tools and chemicals commonly used in electronics. In addition to a short discussion on surface mount technology and a wide range of electronics projects, the book contains an excellent review of circuit simulation software.
The author, Ronald A. Reis, teaches electronics at Los Angeles Valley College. He wrote the first edition of "Becoming an Electronics Technology" in 1993 and has updated it every few years as the electronics industry and economy has changed. The book is written in an engaging and clear style that makes it easy to understand.
Each chapter includes review questions, individual or group activities, and issue for class discussion. This gives the student a quick way to reinforce the material in the book and to delve further into the matters covered. Also, for those considering using this book for an introductory course on electronics, there is an instructor's manual.
All in all, this is an excellent book that does an outstanding job of helping one understand what the electronics technician profession is (and isn't). I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about the electronics and trying to determine if being an electronics technician might be for them.

EROTIC AND DARK VAMPIRE ART.......2005-08-30
The Crimson Embrace series continues to be my favorite of all the Gallery Girls Collections from SQ productions. These dark, gothic images of sensual female vampires by some of the top artists in fantasy and erotic art are always a treat for the eyes. Crimson Embrace Vol. 5 is no different as it presents 64 pages of luscious vampire art starting off with a cover by Greg Loudon and featuring artists such as Fastner & Larson, Daniel Pascarelli, Mike Hoffman, James Ryman, Gerard Gallego, and many more.
Gerard Gallego presents the domineering vampire as a blonde vamp is using her submissive slave as a lounge chair. Gallego is also the creator of the most erotic piece in the book, as a hot female vamp straddles her nude victim as blood flows down her chest. Fastner & Larson are always at the top of their game with their beautiful and care-free illustrations of females and they provide some great pieces for this latest edition including a trio of sexy, sultry vampires cavorting before a full moon, and a pair of barfly beauties sipping their cocktails while their latest victim grasps at his freshly bitten throat.
James Ryman is another one of my favorites whose work always evokes a sense of bestial power. This is well displayed in his nude, bat-winged vampire and his vampire mermaid, swimming away from a fresh kill. Daniel Pascarelli shows the neck is not the only place a vampire likes to take a bit out of as he draws a snarling vampire sinking her fangs into the backside of her female prey. Villagers are enacting their vengeance on a vampire, burning her at a stake in a powerful piece by Mitch Byrd.
Crimson Embrace continues to set be a trendsetter in the field of dark, erotic art. The diversity of talent each volume presents is outstanding. Another great offering from SQ Productions!

Book Description
The Toaster Broke So We’re Getting Married is a hilarious and heartwarming look at one woman’s odyssey from divorced single mom with a rebellious streak and a string of soured relationships to blushing bride, shamelessly seduced by the kind of satin-and-lace fantasies that short-circuit logic, practicality, and self-control. While diving into an ocean of tulle and other trappings—determined to remain true to the person she is—Holms offers funny insights into:
Living Together: “It wasn’t just about love anymore, it was about laundry and garbage and wet towels and who put the spoons in the dishwasher upside down.”
The Dress: “Judith clips a long veil to the back of my head and lets it tumble to the floor. I nearly burst into tears. I am the Barbie Dream Bride.”
The Cake: “Something about this woman makes me think she may have learned cake decorating in jail.”
The Jitters: “Right now, ‘Till death do us part’ seems like a very long time.”
With honesty and delicious humor, Holm chronicles her adventure to the altar, sharing her anxieties and fears about true commitment. Her story will resonate with anyone who has ever taken a leap of faith.

my thoughts on..........2002-10-09
The Toaster Broke, So We're Getting Married, was a book recommended to me by my mother. Not normally my most reliable source for books that actually interest me, mostly they are the type of book which tell of deep and meaningful coming of age moments in a confused and misguided teenagers life, one word, boring. But I decided to give it a try because I knew some of the people in the book. The Toaster Broke, So We're Getting Married, was a good book and a fairly quick read. The length is a good indicator for the context, short but not flimsy.
So what's the book about? It's a narration by a single mother of a teenage daughter who is on the verge of getting married for the second time. A seemingly typical structure for a family of characters in a book or story. But the way it is written is what sets this book apart. The story is not told by a third person narrator, who at best as a detached "watchers" of the story can tell the movements of the characters and recount dialogue. It is a prefect mixture of the thoughts inside the head of Pamela Holm and dialogue between her and the many different people who must be talked to and met with in the course of planning a wedding.
The book starts as a listing of all the previous relationships Pamela has had, and as the list grows longer it can be seen why she might have some doubts as to whether she could be suited to be married ever again after a first failed marriage and many failed relationships after that. But the little adventures of deciding on the perfect wedding gown and which cake is ridiculous for $800 dollars, are told with the perspective of a down to earth person who knows it is ridiculous to spend years of time and salaries for the one day.
Over-all a very good book, don't expect War and Peace, but something that could be a nice escape, but not too far from reality.
Enjoyable Interlude.......2002-10-01
Although I have read or tried several books in this genre, this one was different somehow. Maybe because it was short, or the way it was divided into topics, or the author's engaging style...whatever it was, the book was enjoyable and humorous.
Holm surprises even herself with how much she cares about all the frippery associated with modern weddings and writes about it with honesty, poking fun at herself in the process!
The author also had some thoughtful reflections on commitment, family, and marriage that really seemed to hit the mark.
Complicating the wedding planning was the fact that this was a second marriage for both the bride and groom, and the author has a 15-year-old daughter. But all turns out well, even with a few glitches.
the sheer joy of finding happiness.......2002-10-01
How and why we read certain books is a study in itself...I had heard of this book through some rather vague, disparate word of mouth....which always piques my interest...rather than the usual publisher hype...so I ordered it and had the chance to read it on a recent cross-country flight...and was I pleasantly surprised....many of us search for that elusive thing called happiness...and here in this very personal book Pamela Holm, who clearly has lead a very intersting life....including having an addictive mother (for which I envied her -- most of my friends who come from some sort of dysfunctional family are always far more interesting...a relatively unhappy first marriage that produced a child (that I woudl have liked to learn more about --though it appers that mother and daughter really are on the same wavelength)and a series of what appears to be very interesting, but less than totally satisfying, "jobs" --more like work experiences ..but at the end of the day something was missing and then --and this is the part that I can truly relate to --you meet someone who you are just smitten with --blown away by, and then realize that maybe, just maybe, you may not be able to live with that person because they are your total opposite --you are casual and carefree and they worry about how the forks are put in the dishwasher or other such "pivotal" issues but you come together and appear to live happily ever after... since there are those wonderful compromises that make these things worthwhile and work..anyway, I felt after reading this book that I knew Denzil and Pamela.....and finished this lovely little book with a great big smile on my face ....and so will you. Get it...it's very inspiring and delightful
A truly entertaining read.......2002-08-02
This very funny book tells a story of wedding planning from a real person's perspective. Ms Holm bravely unveils the shameless marketing techniques of the wedding industry, as she simultaneously finds herself seduced by its fantasy. Her journey goes deep into her own heart as she questions our definitions of relationships, love, marriage, and family. A truly entertaining read for anyone who is thinking of, or already has made the committment.
Product Description
By laying down a dime or 15 cents at the box office, a gawky, socially awkward kid could live for a few hours in a dream world of jitterbugs and bobbysoxers, running right alongside Poverty Row stars bravely entering forbidding haunted houses and creepy cemeteries. And that is what most of the pictures in this volume are: little dreams, made all the more dreamlike by their obscurity. The pictures are not big-studio productions full of high-wattage star power, but quirky titles from little studios. Forgotten Horrors 4 remains focused on the tawdry (but no less magical) Hollywood backstreet known as Poverty Row. From their Poverty Row vantage, actors gazed out at the Golden City just beyond their grasp and, between shots on cheap sets in quickie productions for directors far beneath the station of DeMille, imagined life as Gregory Peck or Loretta Young. Seen today, these small-studio pictures carry a quirky, almost heartwarming nobility. They know what they are, and the people involved allowing for factors ranging from disillusionment to cynicism to John Barleycorn seem to be doing the best they can. They know it s not MGM or Paramount. But anyway, they are working. Without the bankable stars that all America knew, the people who made these films had to have Something Else going for them. And that Something Else was almost always an exploitable angle, something the theater owners could sell in lieu of marquee names. In the pictures examined between these covers, that Something Else was a horrific or bizarre element of one sort or another, ranging from simple murder to terrors far more fiendish. In the Westerns and the comedies, the horror element often came as a lagniappe, giving an extra thrill to the folks who probably would have shown up anyway. And rather than fading into obscurity, these little gems still manage to entertain us almost 60 years after their debuts.
Customer Reviews:
A fun read for movie fans.......2007-09-09
This newest book in the Forgotton Horrors series covers the postwar era up to 1948. Many obscure films are covered, many that I had never heard of before. Others, like "Unknown Island" (an off-beat, lost island of dinosaurs flick), have had DVD releases. My only disagreement with the book is the inclusion of many murder mysteries, which don't qualify as horror in my mind. Of course, this would be a much thinner volume without them. I can't wait for the next volume to cover the fifties!

Book Description
The classic source for the technical analysis discipline now brings readers up to date in techniques and technology
Now, in this second edition of the classic text, expert Thomas Dorsey shows, step-by-step, how to create, maintain, and interpret your own point and figure charts. He explains how you can use your findings to track and forecast market prices and develop an overall investment strategy. Perhaps most importantly, he helps you develop confidence in the market and take decisive action at the appropriate time, rather than reacting after the fact. Dorsey also highlights new developments in the field and incorporates the use of recently developed software to track any market using point and figure methods. Written for both new and experienced P & F chartists, this updated edition of a technical analysis classic brings point and figure charting into the Internet age.
Thomas J. Dorsey (Richmond, VA) is President of Dorsey, Wright & Associates, a registered investment advisory firm that uses point and figure charting as its main source of technical analysis.

Point & Figure Charting for STOCK TRADERS ONLY.......2007-05-03
Thomas Dorsey does a great job at explaining (in the first 50 pages) how the Point & Figure Chart is created, as well as some basic 'forms' that the charts can take. I read some of the reviews of this book thinking that as a Futures/Commodities trader (early stage/beginner) I would learn alot about Point & Figure Charting for Futures/Commodities. I was wrong. There are no more than 3 pages in this book regarding Commodities, and only insofar as they are underlying indicators for stocks that rely on commodity prices. So, if you want to learn about Point and Figure Charting, this is an ok book. There may be others out there that are better, as that aspect of this book served its purpose for me....which is P&F Charting APPEARS to be an excellent methodology for Trend analysis (big picture) for Futures/Commodities. However, if you are a Stock Trader then this book may have much more relevance to you. Not a bad book, just not appropriate for Commodities/Futures Traders.
In Defense of the Presentation.......2006-10-23
I find it hard to accept the reviews I have read about this book having poor explanations of the P&F concept, or that they are available elsewhere. Mr. Dorsey's book is first rate. I read this book when it was first released, and I find myself using it as a reference tool quite often. Mr. Dorsey's explanation of the NYSE Bullish Percent chart and how to use it and the Relative Strength charts in conjuntion with your stock selection is as plainly presented as if you were having a conversation with the man.
When you consider that he also has weekly podcasts that help explain how the P&F charts are used, I consider Mr. Dorsey to be THE authority on the subject of Point&Figure charting and this book is an excellent source for learning how to start P&F analysis.
Technical Analysis De-Mystified - Not.......2005-10-18
The other review on this date (wentraub) is not a book review but some random thoughts on investing. The Dynamic Asset Level Investing model is not even in the book but a paid service from Dorsey's website!!!!
How can Dorsy be one of Wall Street's saviest minds when his is in Virginia?
PnF charting is only one of many tool available to a Technician.
Technical Analysis De-Mystified.......2005-10-18
Technical analysts are becoming an endangered species on Wall Street. Major firms have long favored a fundamental approach emphasizing a nuts and bolts approach to company revenues, use of capital, and innovation. Scores of fundamental analysts closely follow individual sectors of the economy, scour SEC filings, and comment on daily developments pertaining to individual companies. Meanwhile a smaller cadre of 'technicians' churn out charts, graphs, and statistics that follow the ebb and flow of investor capital. Recently two well known full service brokerage firms decimated their already small contingent of technical analysts and another firm let go their star technician.
Academic studies on the efficiency of the markets to digest news and quickly reset the market value of securities have long questioned the value of Wall Street analysts to forecast future prices. If news is unpredictable, by definition, and the prices of securities adjust immediately, what is the point of a forecast. These studies have been particularly harsh on technical analysis. Technical analysis may not have helped its cause with a coded language of triple tops, head and shoulders patterns, Fibonnaci retracements, etc. It all begins to sound more like the Occult than analysis. This book blows away a lot of the smoke.
Tom Dorsey has given us a straight forward (if somewhat breathless) introduction to his method of technical analysis. His X and O charts record trends of buying (demand) and selling (supply) in the market. It is this dynamic imbalance, he contends, that is the primary determinant of value in the marketplace. The tendency for these trends to repeat over time represents the psychology of investors to buy or sell at critical junctures. For Dorsey fundamental analysis is useful in determining what company stocks should be owned. Then it is the role of the technician to determine when to buy and sell. Fundamental analysis identifies good companies. Technical analysis identifies good stocks. Good companies do things well. Good stocks make investors money.
The value of Dorsey's work is to help investors find sectors of the economy and securities that may be due for a reversal of fortune after extended periods of under or out performance. The bottom line is that he has developed a useful toolkit for the investor. A look at his Dynamic Asset Level Investing model [12/2004 - not in this 2001 book] that recommends areas to allocate assets (small capitalization stocks, Latin America, natural resources, energy, etc.) seems prescient just about a year later. Using ETFs (exchange traded funds) to develop a portfolio based on Dorsey's model would have inevitably led investors to a chunk of the best returns available for the period. This book should certainly be read by all investors who want an introduction to technical analysis and a better understanding of one of Wall Street's savviest minds. You may not want to be on the other side of too many of Tom Dorsey's trades!
Bait for online service.......2005-06-25
The book is too wordy - in fact the same information is more concisely presented and available for free at DWA website. To follow the method described you need to become a paying member of DWA. A free 2 week trail is also available at the site. This allows you to findout that to really understand and apply this method you need to take several of the $150 classes that DWA also provides. Also, the online service is really geared towards stock brokers (investment advisors).
Use the online course - its faster, cheaper and better.
