The cowboy as hero, David McCumber reminds us, is one of America's abiding myths. John Wayne, Clint Eastwood--even the ubiquitous Marlboro man--endure as symbols, perhaps because of our need to believe (in a technology-savvy, urbanized culture) that "cleaner country ... something rougher, less despoiled, harder to win" still exists.
At midlife, McCumber abandoned "corporate striving" in California and spent a year learning what it means to be a real cowboy at one of Montana's largest ranches. His unsentimental, gritty, yet evocative account defies and confirms our preconceptions. Cowboying, he quickly learns, has always meant backbreaking, isolating work: mending endless stretches of fence, weeks spent digging ditches, rousting livestock in subzero weather. But ranch life has not been immune to the times: today's cowboys choose four-wheel drive vehicles over horses, regularly deliver calves by cesarean section, and might as easily hold a degree in English as in agriculture.
Ultimately, McCumber reveals that the cowboy is alive and kicking in the West, his ethic defined by a firm belief in the value of hard work and an unshakable respect for the weather and the land. "Cowboys are heroes," he tells us, "but not of the Hollywood variety. Their heroism comes in small portions. John Wayne may have saved the stampeding herd in Red River, but in real life the herd is saved one calf at a time." --Svenja Soldovieri
Book Description
In February of his forty-fourth year, journalist David McCumber signed on as a hand on rancher Bill Galt's expansive Birch Creek spread in Montana. The Cowboy Way is an enthralling and intensely personal account of his year spent in open country—a book that expertly weaves together past and present into a vibrant and colorful tapestry of a vanishing way of life. At once a celebration of a breathtaking land both dangerous and nourishing, and a clear-eyed appreciation of the men—and women—who work it, David McCumber's remarkable story forever alters our long-held perceptions of the "Roy Rogers" cowboy with real-life experiences and hard economic truths.

It made me want to fly out to Montana.......2006-10-13
David has a natural, easy way of describing such a difficult land. I have never been to Montana but long to go there, and this book makes my longing more profound.
David was fair to everyone in this book, to the cows who naturally were raised for food, to the ranch owner and manager and the many ranch hands he worked with. He even made me like ranchers even though I am more of an environmentalist.
The countryside, the skies, the sun, the weather, the winds, the mooing of the cows, all gets described so passionately in this book. And even though men of this genre tend to herofy themselves, David was more than honest with his readers and admitted weaknesses at many ranching skills. But we can forgive him because he rewarded us with a well-written, well-paced country-adventure involving obstinate cows, irate ranchers, aching muscles and dog-gone determination.
An honest, funny and entertaining look at real life.......2006-06-19
What happens when a 44-year-old assistant newspaper editor becomes a working cowboy on a Montana ranch? This is an intensely personal account of 2 years spent in open country (although written as if it were one year)---a book that paints a colorful, insightful and humorous canvas of what cowboys on a working ranch really do (changing oil, riding ATV's, building irrigation dams, running loaders, feeding cattle... and yes, even a good old-fashioned roundup.)
Like many new jobs, he's expected to simply jump in and lend a hand his from his first few minutes on the job- which he does. Fortunately, he had admitted up front that he knew nothing about being a cowhand, which the owner (an incredibly hard-working guy named Bill Gault in the book) found refreshingly direct and honest. Over the course of two years, McCumber goes from a green newbie to a more experienced hand. He learns much about himself and others in the process. And he shares much of that insight with us in a refreshingly direct manner.
It's astounding what today's cowhand does. It's not easy work- in fact, it's some of the hardest work imaginable. From changing out truck engines to performing C-sections on pregnant cattle, to cleaning up sheds to cutting hay (and eating bull testicles) McCumber describes it all in great detail.
The book has insight, candor and humor. It's become one of my favorites.
Cowboying for real . . ........2006-04-11
It took me a while to get into this book, but once I did, I really enjoyed it. The author, a newspaperman, spends a year on a large ranch in western Montana, and his account of that year is the best book I've ever read on modern-day cattle ranching as told by a cowboy. McCumber, in fact, is not a cowboy and has to learn nearly everything there is to learn about it on the job. And the reader learns along with him.
His employer, Bill Galt, is a hard-driving man, leaving no room for error and no time to rest. The men on his ranch routinely put in 12-hour days, working seven days a week. They work in all kinds of weather, including long winter months of snow, wind, and bitter cold. McCumber's account of the year includes calving, branding, irrigation, fencing, haying, fire-fighting, trips to sale barns, moving cattle, and maintaining equipment of all kinds. Largely mechanized, working cattle in traditional ways ahorseback is a rarity.
Besides Galt, several of the men come to life on the page with particular vividness, especially Keith the foreman. A young cowboy, Jerry, who tries everyone's patience, is also memorable. This book is for anyone who has ever thought of leaving a tiresome job and working on a ranch. What it shows is that cowboying is hard, back-breaking, dangerous, exhausting, unending work, requiring countless skills. And you understand the measure of pride that men who choose this kind of work take in what they do.
Personal account.......2005-07-18
In June 2001, I visited Birch Creek Ranch after picking up the book (The Cowboy Way)at a local chapters in Richmond Hill Ontario, Canada. After many arrangements, I travelled to White Sulphur Springs and met Bill Galt, his family and his crew.
I visited and worked with his wonderful crew (different visits)
(Dave, Kirk, Tyson, Mike, Russ, Terry, Don, Aaron,& Justin) throughout calving, haying, irrigating and branding, from which evolved some of the most memorable moments of my life to date.
I can tell you first hand that this book is a true account of the daily routines found on this working cattle ranch.
The honesty, integrity and vastness of the land and the people I was so fortunate to meet is indescribable!!!!
A.
A really good book.......2005-03-26
I liked that the author keeps his focus on the ranch and does not tell us much about his love life or his thoughts on politics. Just what he did at the ranch day by day, season by season. Hard to explain why, but it's fascinating. Especially after coming home from an office job. There is a lot about the people he works with and a little about the history of the ranch and environs. Great portraits of people and horses. I would have liked a map... also photos of the trucks, machines, horses, fields, culverts he mentions. If he had stayed on the ranch for another year, I would have been happy to keep reading.

Just Returned From Chile.......2007-10-01
I just returned from a month of living in Santiago, Chile, learning Spanish, and living with my Footprint guide to Chile. I read a lot of the book before arriving and everything it had said and recommended was right. I was living in Santiago and it gave tons of things to do, stay, eat, and see in the city. I was also traveling on weekend. Things like, skiing in the Andes, visiting Valparaiso and Vina del Mar, Cajon del Maipo, and taking a trip to the island of Chiloe in the south. Everywhere I went I would read the guide book beforehand and I would arrive and walk around and really have a strong grasp of where things were as well as what to do and what to avoid. There are good detailed maps of all the main cities/towns as well as some of the more popular smaller towns too. The descriptions of places like hostels and restaurants are 100% accurate. I was able to look at other guide books in Chile when I would bump into another traveler. Many times, when someone else had little or no information on something, we would look it up in my book and there would be plenty of information on it. I took this book with me every morning I left my apartment in Santiago and everywhere I traveled. If you are thinking about buying this I strongly recommend it.
I didn't like the guide.......2007-05-02
I do not recommend this guide, the info its not accurate and not updated. The places recommended in the guide often do not exist (specially hostels and vegeterian restaurants mencioned). Also prices can be really different than those mentioned.
An important detail is that some hostels and pensiones said to be "clean" are definitely not, be aware specially if you are in Puerto Montt.
If you travel off season you may experience difficulties finding travel guides and tours in chiloe. There is only one tourist agent working off season in castro, if you ask you'll get to him, but his agency, he owns an hostel and a simple hotel as well, are not pointed in the guide even though he is the only opcion one can get to visit the chiloe national park during winter-fall months.
About travelling into southern Chile without passing through Argentina the guide offers almost no information about bus schedules and local bus companies or ferries which are more than scarce off season (sometimes there are busses and ferries schedules only once a week. During the summer (dec-jan-feb)its different and won't be an issue.
Just like a "Frommer's" for Chile ..........2006-01-14
This is the detail "travel agenda and planning guide" you want to determine hotel, transportation and other location detail. It is very much similar to a Frommer's Guide.
It is sorely missing color and story. Therfore it is boring to read. That's why I only gave it four stars. But Chile guides are not plentiful. This is designed to be more of a reference guide and it is good at that. Don't expect to get enough info on geography, history, politics and the people of Chile.
The good news!! For the information missing in this guide, you should definitly get the "Insight Guide" "Chile & Ester Island" (Discovery Channel). This book has the color and information to give a Chile novice all they need to know about Chile's geography, history, people and politics. I could not put it down until I read all the way through it.
These two books are the absolut perfect combo for the first-time Chile traveller or Chile novice and really should be sold in a package. In tandem they cannot be beat.
Get these two and you have the perfect travel guide package.
Bar none, the best guide to Chile.......2005-04-26
Definitely the best guide to Chile. More accurate, enthusiastic, and useful than Rough Guides or Lonely (this bar closed 3 years ago) Planet. Janak also runs a darn nice hostel.

Excellent guide.......2003-04-22
Prior to my trip to Chile last year, I checked available guide books in a local bookstore. I chose Footprint for the content and maps, and also because it had a section about Patagonian Argentina that would be useful. I wasn't disappointed, the guide was most helpful. When talking to another traveller in Chile who had an Italian version of Lonely Planet guide, I could see that some information in the Footprint guide was more accurate. I liked it so much that I'm ordering new Footprint guides for my upcoming trips.

Customer Reviews:
This 2007 / 4th Edition is a great guide for Argentina and an excellent guide for Patagonia. .......2007-02-27
There was a day when Rough Guide and Lonely Planet were the best guides for travelers that sought to leave the tour groups behind and explore on their own. But slowly, year by year, Footprint has improved, and now this 4th edition is one of the best guides for Argentina that you can buy. *Note that this review is for the the 4th edition, other reviews below are probably refering to the 3rd Edition.
I took five travel guides with me to explore Argentina/Patagonia, and I found myself consistently reaching for Footprint first. It is the most current (2006) and the guide consistently listed quality accommodations and good restaurants, some of which were exemplary. The city maps in the guide are excellent. All the restaurants and hotels are well marked on each map. Kudos.
Footprint Argentina's background section (history, religion, culture etc.) is well written, brief, yet informative. There is an abundance of website references throughout the text and a website listing for almost every accommodation = excellent.
I spent five weeks exploring Patagonia and found Footprint to be the best single guide to have. More than 200 pages in this Argentinean guide are devoted to this region, including a section on Chilean Patagonia. If you purchase "Time Out Patagonia" (see my review) you will have the best two guides possible for Patagonia.
On the downside Footprint uses a cumbersome letter system instead of just telling you the price for accommodations (i.e., LL=$200 plus, L=$150-$200, AL=$101-$150, A,B,C,D,E,F etc. -- putting the legend at the back of the book - a serious hassle). It also fails to tell you what is the price range for the restaurants; so at one eatery you could pay $10 for your meal, then have a $35 bill at another. Not good. The descriptions of the restaurants are insipid and verge on being meaningless: "tasty food", "cosy", "very popular", "delicious food". Whereas, other good guides (Rough Guide - also highly recommended - see my review) give you pointers: "best grilled shrimp ever" / "the steaks here are the best in town" etc.
Bottom line: this is a very good guide for Argentina and the best guide for those that are going to Patagonia. Highly recommended
Totally useless!.......2006-05-26
Everything about this book, from phone numbers to accommodation reviews, has been almost laughably wrong. I've never felt compelled to write a review on amazon before, but this book has been so inaccurate I think I should warn people. The only reason anyone should buy this book is to do the exact OPPOSITE of whatever it says. I doubt this author has even been to the places she writes about, that's how consistently wrong this book is. It is impossible to locate a copyright date, and they probably did that on purpose, considering many places have closed and info is obviously outdated. I understand that some places change over time, but I've given this book a chance in 10 different places throughout Argentina and the advice here has failed miserably.
Not bad, but...........2005-12-25
I returned from Argentina just two weeks ago, and I used this book exclusively. I usually use the "Let's Go" guides when I travel, and I didn't like this one nearly as much. Too many superlatives throughout the book - unfortunately not everything can be amazing or fantastic - so after a while there was really no way to differenciate the truly fantastic (the falls or Perito Moreno Glacier), from the just so so things. And regardless of what the book says, unless you love to eat beef and pork every meal, the food is terrible. Very mediocre pasta and pizzas everywhere, and vegetarians are highly restricted. The food was definitely the lowlight of our trip. If interested in hiking and the outdoors - plan on spending the majority of your time way down south. El Calafate, El Chalten, and Ushuaia are all truly amazing areas. And if you can fit the Falls in, they are definitely worth the trip. The prices in the book were pretty accurate, although things tended to be a bit higher. But it is still quite inexpensive. We thought the book did a poor job of letting you know just how difficult it would be to get to many of the wilderness areas without your own car or hiring an expensive guide. Another thing to remember when planning your trip is that it is much cheaper in the North, and the buses are nicer and more plentiful. Overall, I thought it was a good book, but the authors could have been a bit more honest about the shortcomings of the country.
Highly recommended -.......2004-12-03
We travelled around Argentina out of season using this guide and the Rough Guide, and found that we turned time and again to the Footprint Guide for reliable and up-to-date information. I broke my ankle in Salta, but thanks to this guide, we were booked into a fantastic hotel, and later spent a few nights luxuriating in a gorgeous and fantastic value for money estancia in Pumamarca, which went some way towards saving the holiday from disaster. If you're thinking of going to Argentina, go now, and take this guide with you!
A fantastic book.......2004-12-03
We travelled to Argentina recently and used this as our only guide. The information was accurate, well presented and current. My wife particularly enjoyed the writer's excellent and as she herself said, elegant descriptive prose. We had a marvellous time on the strength of some of her recommendations, most particularly the Lake district and Mendoza where we ate enough meat to see us both through to our pensions. Many thanks Ms Dilks!

Great 356 book but..........2000-04-13
This is a great 'general' review on the history of the 356, but it lacks the detail of some other 'specific' books such as 'The 356 Porsche, A Restores' Guide to Authenticity' by Dr. B. Johnson. As a more general book, it is great. It has some of the most beautiful photos, both inside and out and some great ideas for restorations. I was hoping for a little more bang for my 35 dollar buck. It does have a great little history on Ferdinand... that makes it a 4 star book!

Fundamental Papers in Wavelet Theory
ASIN: 0817642765 |
Book Description
Developed in this book are several deep connections between time--frequency (Fourier/Gabor) analysis and time--scale (wavelet) analysis, emphasizing the powerful adaptive methods that emerge when separate techniques from each area are properly assembled in a larger context. While researchers at the forefront of developments in time--frequency and time--scale analysis are well aware of the benefits of such a unified approach, there remains a knowledge gap in the larger community of practitioners about the precise strengths and limitations of Fourier/Gabor analysis versus wavelets. This book fills that gap by presenting the interface of time--frequency and time--scale methods as a rich area of work.
Topics and Features:
* Inclusion of historical, background material such as the pioneering ideas of von Neumann in quantum mechanics and Landau, Slepian, and Pollak in signal analysis
* Presentation of self-contained core material on wavelets, sampling reconstruction of bandlimited signals, and local trigonometric and wavelet packet bases
* Development of connections based on perspectives that emerged after the wavelet revolution of the 1980s
* Integrated approach to the use of Fourier/Gabor methods and wavelet methods
* Comprehensive treatment of Fourier uncertainty principles
* Explanations at the end of each chapter addressing other major developments and new directions for research
Applied mathematicians and engineers in signal/image processing and communication theory will find in the first half of the book an accessible presentation of principal developments in this active field of modern analysis, as well as the mathematical methods underlying real-world applications. Researchers and students in mathematical analysis, signal analysis, and mathematical physics will benefit from the coverage of deep mathematical advances featured in the second part of the work.

Book Description
Containing the letters and diaries that Goethe wrote during his journey to Italy at age thirty-seven, Italian Journey reveals his tremendous range of interests. His writings cover literature, art history and his own struggle to be a painter, various sciences and political events, personal encounters, and the Italian landscape. "In Rome," Goethe wrote, "I first found myself, for the first time I achieved inner harmony...." For Goethe the writer, this temporal and spiritual journey was at the root of his development from Sturm und Drang to classicism, a decisive point in his life and the history of German literature.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book, Mediocre Translation.......2005-04-24
This is a remarkable book which well deserves the praise other reviewers have given it. However, the translation is very flat; it makes Goethe sound far more like an English gentleman than like himself. For those who are interested in reading Goethe's thoughts on Italy, I recommend searching for a different translation.
The Original Beautiful Mind Goes South.......2002-05-18
In preparation for a trip to Italy, I began reading the accounts of famous travellers to that land: D.H. Lawrence, Charles Dickens, Tobias Smollett, and now Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. I had no great expectations but was knocked for a loop from page one.
Never before had I encountered a questing mind quite like Goethe's. Almost from the moment to left Carlsbad in September 1786, he was noticing the geological structures underlying the land and the flora and fauna above it. He sits down and talks with ordinary people without an attitude -- and this after he had turned the heads of half of Europe with his SORROWS OF YOUNG WERTHER. Here he was journeying incognito, apparently knowing the language well enough to communicate with peasants, prelates, and nobility.
One who abhors marking books I intend to keep, I found myself underlining frequently. "In this place," he writes from Rome, "whoever looks seriously about him and has eyes to see is bound to become a stronger character." In fact, Goethe spent over a year in Rome learning art, music, science, and even sufferings the pangs of love with a young woman from Milan.
Bracketing his stay in Rome is a longish journey to Naples and Sicily, where he becomes acquainted with Sir Warren Hamilton and his consort Emma, the fascinating Princess Ravaschieri di Satriano, and other German travelers. One of them, Wilhelm Tischbein, painted a wonderful portrait of Goethe the traveller shown on the cover of the Penguin edition.
The translation of W.H. Auden and Elizabeth Mayer is truly wonderful. My only negative comments are toward the Penguin editors who, out of some pennywise foolishness, have omitted translating the frequent Latin, Greek, and French quotes. I am particularly upset about the lack of a translation of the final quote from Ovid's "Tristia." In every other respect, this book is a marvel and does not at all read like a work written some 215 years ago. It is every bit as fresh and relevant as today's headlines, only ever so much more articulate!
Travelling in Italy in the 1780's.......2002-05-15
Goethe comes alive as a very real person, not just the famous German author, in this travel memoir detailing the two years he spent in Italy in the 1780's. A wonderful description of travel before airplanes and cameras. Somewhat tedious descriptions of geology and of his works-in-progress are frequent, but never too long.
It might be helpful to read (or re-read) the introduction after having read part of the book (say, into the first Roman visit).
Rocks and Rolls.......2001-08-15
This was billed as a good introduction to Goethe. I don't know, since this is the first Goethe I've read--but I'm delighted. It starts as a sojourn south, with detailed notations of rocks, geologic information and topography. Don't let that deter you! His description of eating just bread and red wine on his sea voyage to Sicily (because of his rolling seasickness) had me running for a bottle Italian Barbera! As my late great aunt would have said: "A nice, nice book."
A Journey worth taking.......2001-07-08
This is a great intro to Goethe, who here seems human, approachable, and caught up in an encounter with Italy that changed pretty much his whole worldview. Written with congenial grace, wit, and observant appreciation.
