I've been for long a tarot lover. I've been for long interested in humankind mysteries psychologically and emotionally speaking. When I saw this deck I immediately understood and felt that this was my dream. To translate all these beautiful stories into Portuguese and tell them as I could to all children and adults I know. All of them are miracles of knowledge and life. In my opinion there isn't, until now, no better way to understand and teach the meanings of all the Arcana. (So subtile and gentle but also so real and true. There is only one "if": The quality of the paper. But this isn't really very important...

Not all of the illustrations are as beautiful as I thought they would be........2007-01-09

I think, overall the colors and the art could have been a little more consistant. Because I bought the deck primarily because I liked the way it looked (the cards shown online, that is) and my lack of serious Tarot use, I won't comment on how the illustrations coincide with the meanings of the cards.

Fantastic Menagerie Deck.......2006-11-10

This is a wonderful deck. The delightful illustrations are very colorful and the book which accompanies the deck is descriptive, full of animal childhood stories and imagination. The deck uses fairy tale images of animals which are evocative symbols. As with many current tarot decks, this deck gives it's own twist on the major and minor arcana tarot card meanings, which is illuminated through the symbols from fairy tales.

This particular deck is full of childhood imagination evoked by fairy tale stories. I love to play around with the tarot and this deck stimulated my own creativity and further understanding of the tarot.

[Okay, so I don't know french] I DO know that this deck is appropriately named. I LOVE this deck! When I first got it I couldn't stop looking at it. It sticks to traditional Tarot imagery, but in a funny, sometimes slightly twisted way. The artwork is truly Victorian in feel and the cream color of the borders of the cards give them that old parchment feel. The "animal people" depicted are truly unique and each one is given such character. The creators did such a great job of capturing artist Grandville's unusual style. My only criticism--and it is a small one--is that the cards are thinner than most decks which can make it a tad more challenging to riffle. But I am NOT about to remove a star for a little riffle trifle. In fact, if I could ADD a star, I would.

Bottom line--if you love Tarot, Grandville, Victorian art, and/or humor, BUY THIS DECK. In my opinion it's a "must-have" addition to any collection.

I am buying this book for a friend's new baby. I have a very old copy of the same book that I recieved when I was just three years old. It has always fascinated and excited me. Children love it for the wild and surreal drawings. Adults love it for the sheer beauty in the artwork. I highly recommend this collection for anyone who wants something a little different. Simplistic beauty.......2004-03-18

This is a very simplistic series of books. I must admit though, that the simple feel of the manga makes the series more enjoyable. Sometimes I grow tired of wading through the heavy and more realistic titles out there. Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of anime and manga, but every now and then it's nice to stop reading a mental buster and pick up something more light - kind of like the difference between Gerald's Game and Harry Potter ~_^

A Pleasing, Straight Forward Series.......2003-07-25

Some people find "Steam Dectives" to be a bit too simplistic, considering other works from Kia Asamiya. However, one must remember that this manga was created for his son, and really is made to be one, enjoyable romp. The main character builds model trains and cars; this is supposed to fun for the most part, not deeply psychological.
Also, if you're not one for the art, then by all means, just don't read the manga. I for one, adore Asamiya's art. Also, if you pay attention, he simplified his usual style for this series, to give it a more cartoony feeling. The big buttons everyone wears are even a salute to "Inspector Gadget," where he was an inbetween animator.
The characters are wonderful. Narutaki is a great hero. Showing bravery where'd you expect a hero to, but then every so often we're suddenly reminded that he is, after all, just a young boy. Ling Ling might be a bit on the weak side for a few people, but I've gotten rather sick and tired of kickbutt female sidekicks. And Le Bread and Lang Lang are just cool villains. When you have a villain dressing like the Phantom of the Opera, with a sidekick nurse who believes death is the best solution to pain, you've got a great rogue gallery set up.
This isn't for everyone, I'm sure. But this series is great for someone who wants to sit back, and just enjoy a pleasant read.

I like the whole idea of the steampunk genre but it's SO hard to execute, and so I was really hoping alot when I took a look at this series, but, it was really [bad] and didn't make anysense and I thought it was so cheezy that even a little kid would be disappointed by this.

This is a very good book. I got it hoping for something to last me a while, but it was so good I read it in less than 2 hours. A very good bit of mystery for the young reader. But I suggest parents look over this in a book store before sharing with children because of a shower scene. It's not explicit though. It doesn't show anything really, but it may offend some parents.

Too simplistic.......2000-04-30

Steam Detectives suffers from the simplicity of its stories. Although it's not quite on the Scooby Doo level of simplicity, it's not nearly far enough above it. The villains are of the masked variety, with nonsensical schemes and goals. The steampunk--high technology based on steam power--setting is interesting enough (if derivative, considering the recent wave of steampunk stories), but it's really wasted. It's not so much that the stories here are bad; rather, there just isn't enough to them.

The art can either save this book or harm it. I've never been a big fan of Kia Asamiya's artwork--the noses of his characters are just too big for their faces (in length and width), and it doesn't appeal to me. Steam Detectives doesn't suffer this nearly so much as other stories (Silent Moebius, for one), but the artwork is also simpler and more stylized. My recommendation: click on the cover art to get a larger view of it. That's what the art looks like, except the book is black & white. Some people love the look of Kia Asamiya's artwork, so take a look at it and decide.

This hysterical hobbyist's guide belongs in every hip library. Coot cat Reverend Ivan Stang, high holy of the Church of the SubGenius, has compiled a bestiary of American creeps and crazies so that you can write to them and receive mail that is weird, horrible, wonderfully absurd, or a combination of all three. Each entry has a paragraph or two and the last known mailing address of some fringe loonies. The book is only current through 1988, though; the only thing wrong with it is that it's high time for an update--with URLs, of course. Let's see ... there are catalogs of perpetual motion machines; brochures from South American flying saucer cults; something called "The Battle Cry of Aggressive Christianity" (Christian, not likely--aggressive, you bet); and bizarre roundups such as "News of the Weird," the Church of Beaver Cleaver, and so on. What makes this book so funny is the author's willingness to list (and ridicule) any group, no matter how repulsive. This means, too, that High Weirdness contains a group to offend everyone; consider yourself warned. In fact, if you aren't offended by some of these groups, you must be pretty offensive yourself. So there.

Yes, the above title is what many readers would call this book
after perusing its fascinating and repelling pages. I got my copy
soon after publication and was tempted to contact some of those groups, but demurred at the prospect of recieving shovel-fulls of
mail and packets as related by the author. I have browsed through
this book from time to time, and I recommend it as a natural depression cure-all: if after reading a few pages, you're not laughing hysterically, there's no hope for you. What's truly weird
is some of the wackier groups sound suspiciously like our current
Administration nominees - well, YOU be the judge. Well worth checking out, readers.

The true SubGenius Holy Books are "The Book of the SubGenius" and "Revelation X: The 'Bob' Apocryphon," but "High Weirdness by Mail" was the book that truly opened my eyes for "Bob." Published in 1988, it was a groundbreaking book that opened the door to the widening field of crackpotology, and a number of more "serious" books looking at the fringe elements of society have all credited High Weirdness as their inspiration. The addresses in that book are now more than ten years out of date, but the book is still worth reading for the vicious, hilarious, and outrageous reviews of all of the addresses contained therein. The writing reveals a great part of the true purpose of the Church of the SubGenius, and it was the writing of High Weirdness that inspired me to send my money to "Bob" and become a fully ordained (and paid-up) SubGenius minister.

This is a book of essays regarding film as interpreted through Jungian theory. the first among my favorites is--
a classic article by John Beebe regarding the anima in films--he also discussed in this article how he uses film to assist analysts to improve their understanding of object relations.

Mary Dougherty's brilliant article (I paraphrase one of her sentences in the title of this review) discusses gendered dynamics and film as a force conditioning womens lives, bringing a womans developmental perspective on viewing film. She states that seeing powerful beautiful women such as Marilyn Monroe on the screen was part of her development of ego and gender identity. These experiences "privileged the power of being a desirable woman over the power of acting on my own desires."

There is also a nice attempt by Lennihen to interpet the movie Pulp Fiction according to the principles of alchemy. There are other really good articles--but then this review would be too long!!

David Kopp's book develops a model of chromatic chord relations in nineteenth-century music by composers such as Schubert, Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, and Brahms. The emphasis is on explaining chromatic third relations and the pivotal role they play in theory and practice. The book traces conceptions of harmonic system and of chromatic third relations from Rameau through nineteenth-century theorists such as Marx, Hauptmann, and Riemann, to the seminal twentieth-century theorists Schenker and Schoenberg and on to the present day. Drawing on tenets of nineteenth-century harmonic theory, contemporary transformation theory, and the author's own approach, the book presents a clear and elegant means for characterizing commonly acknowledged but loosely defined elements of chromatic harmony, and integrates them as fully-fledged entities into a chromatically-based conception of harmonic system. Best book on Theory of Constraints since "The Goal." I bought a copy for each of my managers and made this the topic of our last meeting.

TOC applied to sales -- great idea, weak presentation.......2006-09-02

The authors clearly understand how Eli Goldratt's Theory of Constraints can be applied to sales management. However, they do a poor job of imitating the novelization that Goldratt engagingly offered in "The Goal".
The authors have constructed a plot that provides an adequate expositional framework, but the main character's facile, unexplored results may not prove persuasive to the uninitiated. Coupled with abrupt story transitions, uneven pacing and sloppy editing (missing verbs, oddly-constructed quotes), the result demonstrates that authors can understand their subject without having the tools to explain it well.
Get "The Cash Machine" for the useful information it contains, but don't expect "The Goal".

An insight into a methodology for sales management.......2004-11-07

I enjoyed this book as it teaches sales management in an easy to understand way, including a novel story line, and highlighting new methods such as:
- Theory of Constraint around the Ten Steps of Sale, thereby highlighting a systematic way to look at sales, and improve them by lifting 'bottlenecks'
- Specific steps to deal with the End-of-Quarter Syndrome and basically change the tempo of internal activities
- The fact that any activity in a company needs to be looked at from a broader perspective, rather than a narrow one, with the 'Prospect-to-Order Chain'.

I particulary enjoyed reading about the student syndrome and how to manager buffer time for any project. This will be helpful for any work or leisure activity.

Good insight!
