The Best Technical Review of California Plants.......2003-03-06

There is no easy way to identify a plant to species, but if it is in California it is far easier to use this volume than the others. Although it was written in 1925, the line drawings are for me priceless. Be advised that names change in 75 years even if plants do not, you will need a modern flora to reference the old name. HIGHLY recommended, but technical.

Good Reference and Learning Guide.......2002-04-29

This is an excellent guide. Very comprehensive, however you must have formal education in botany and plant ID in order to effectively use the guide to key plants to genus and or species. Not recommended for the average person. Just people who are plant nerds!

Not for the uninitiated.......2001-01-13

This book is an excellent botanical key listing a huge number of plants. It is not your average "audubon" guide, since it requires you to key out the plant in question using botanical systematics. Definitely a good reference book, but hard to use casually to find out what that tree is in your front yard!

Excellent, but not for beginners.......2000-07-15

This is an excellent book covering thousands of species of flowering plants of California. The book does contain a brief introduction to keying plants and a glossary of plant terms, but despite these features, I believe that the beginner would find this book difficult to use. It's size and complexity can be intimidating, and without color pictures (which aren't always accurate, but helpful for the beginner) it can be a frustrating experience for the novice.

I really haven't had a chance to read this book, but what I've seen so far it is very informative. I work for USDA FOREST SERVICE and this book is here at work. The problem is I would like to have one of my own, so I'm now in the process of looking for it at our book store in town. If they do not have it, possibly they could order it for me. If not I will travel to the next larger town to accomplish my mission. I will get this book one way or another.

A Bit Too Personal.......2004-03-22

Unlike many other guides by Periplus that are written by a team of authors, this is the work of a single person, so it feels a bit more like his own personal travelogue than a general guide.
He tried to present lots of background information along with describing major attractions, and the photos are as good as usual, but for this particular region the excellent Lonely Planet guide "Indonesia's Eastern Islands" is actually better both for background and practical info.

Bird Census Techniques: a review.......2006-02-24

This is an extremely useful guide to anyone thinking about doing a serious bird count. I myself have counted birds on many habitats and for many reasons, and I had to review a large number of papers before adopting a counting method. Now, with this book in hand, all essential techniques of counting birds, whether in the tropics or temperate regions, are within minutes reach! I found this title highly useful for my bird census studies. It is a highly practical work. I recommend it for anyone who counts birds, whether for serious scientific work or just as a simple hobby.

Nice intro into ecological censusing for beginners/amateurs.......2003-06-03

As someone who has worked with the public to do bird conservation, I have found this book to be helpful in helping to explain the techniques & issues that scientists face when doing ecological censusing.

Other than the fact that most of the species that are mentioned are Old World species (a moot point since the topics & techniques are universal), this is a good book. One thing I would like to see, is a North American version that uses examples based on New World species, & how these censuses & projects relate to our conservation laws in the U.S. The authors make mention of several British or European laws dealing with habitat conservation and restoration. It would be interesting to see U.S. examples based on our laws.

Overall, a good read for anyone getting into citizen-based bird science & conservation, or introductory-level college ecology students.

Up to 50^oC, sotolon 1 slightly decomposed to acetoin 5 in aqueous sodium hydroxide solution under nitrogen and in the absence of light, and this degradation was irreversible, but at 80^oC it was rapidly decomposed according to two other reaction pathways. The first one (kinetic route) was new: it gave rise to the novel 3-methyl-2-oxopent-3-enoic acid 11 by opening of the lactone cycle. The second one (thermodynamic route) was the reverse of the formation of 1 from ethanal 9 and 2-oxobutyric acid 8, giving also propionic acid 10 by decarbonylation of 8. As shown in dilute potassium hydroxide added with potassium fluoride, the initial addition of hydroxide ion to 1 distinguished between the processes at 50 and 80^oC. At 50^oC, the ion added to the soft electrophilic carbon of the conjugated lactone (1,4-addition), whereas at 80^oC, it added to the hard electrophilic carbonyl carbon (1,2-addition). Under acidic conditions, 11 was easily cyclised back to racemic 1, whereas 1 formation from ethanal and 2-oxobutyric acid was very slow and unspecific, as reported previously. Furthermore, 5,5,5[^2H"3]-3-methyl-2-oxopent-3-enoic acid d"3-11 was produced from 1, when its degradation was carried out in sodium deuteroxide at 80^oC. Its cyclisation in deuterated acid solution gave rise to 3-hydroxy-4-methyl-5-[^2H"3])-methylfuran-2(5H)-one d"3-1, which was shown to be chemically and isotopically stable in strong acidic conditions. d"3-11 was used as internal standard in a new stable isotope dilution assay method to quantitate 1 in wine. As 1 was shown to decompose slowly to the above degradation products in dilute sodium carbonate at room temperature, but faster in the presence of cupric ion (mainly oxidation to 5), a purification procedure using the favoured partition of hydrophilic 1 in dilute aqueous acid allowed to obtain extracts suitable to quantitate specifically 1. This method allowed the quantitative determination of 1 in Petit and Gros Manseng dry and sweet Jurancon wines (9-24 years ageing), with levels below its olfactive perception threshold (15@mgL^-^1). Very good book with lots of info.............2004-07-09

I bought this book after reading a delightful article about the author, Schneidman, in the Los Angeles Times a couple of weeks ago (GREAT article, too, if you can find it!) The book is thorough, to say the least. I think probably everything that could be said about Arthur, the man who committed suicide, has been said. I would like to see a picture of him -- or would I? Turns out he was very self-centered; in fact, it's hard for me to believe all these people adored him as they seemed to. I don't mean to pass judgment on the man, but just wanted to let readers know this is an excellent, fascinating primer on suicide, and even of human nature. It is not too technical, and it is very touching in parts, not to mention educational. If you have ever known anyone who has committed suicide, or even know of someone (like Sylvia Plath, the poet), this book will hold your interest all the way through.

This is an excellent book. I would recommend it to anyone interested in psychology - especially the suicidal aspect of it. At points the writing may be above the average person, but I think almost anyone can read and understand this book.

After the Autopsy, Cause of Death is Still Suicide... Sadly.......2004-04-04

Edwin Shneidman, one of the keenest minds on suicide, offers an outstanding "autopsy" of a suicidal mind, Arthur, a miserable physician-attorney. Arthur, it seems, had a knack for having to be perfect and for communicating his pain in letters. Given his suicide letter (and many drafts that preceded it), Shneidman and a team of suicidologists interview several people who knew Arthur well (they thought) to try to figure out just why Arthur chose death over life.

The book is outstanding. It is hard to stop reading as each expert and interviewee offers his or her own unique views of Arthur's life and death. Unfortunately, if you're looking for one correct answer, it's not in this book. Shneidman does an excellent job of showing how ultimately all psychological questions can be answered with just two words: "It depends!" Depending upon your own perspective, you could argue convincingly that Arthur kills himself because he was, for example, mildly autistic (and untreated), clinically depressed (and inappropriately treated), selfish and narcissistic (attention seeking), controlling and dominant (had to have the last word through his own death), or traumatized as a child by rigid, unloving parents that divorced young.

Overall, if you want to see first hand how some of the premier suicidologists in the world can honestly, yet amicably, disagree, check this excellent, quick read text. It won't give you the answers, but it sure will help you understand better that suicide and psychological health are complex matters that we may never truly understand.
