        Book Description

Experienced product designers are increasingly expected to be adept at incorporating a range of components into their designs. Students and experimenters too need to look beyond basic circuits and devices to achieve adequate design solutions. For those experienced in engineering design, this is the guide to electric motors.

This book will allow engineers and designers to marry the technologies they know about with motor technology, and hence to incorporate motors into their products. Of the many good books on motors, such as Electric Motors and Drives by Hughes, none offer the engineering professional a tailored guide to motors taking into account their expertise. This book fills that gap.

Irving Gottlieb is a leading author of many books for practising engineers, technicians and students of electronic and electrical engineering.

        Practical approach with minimum theory
Covers a core area ignored by many electronics texts
Shows how to incorporate motors into electronic products

                            Book Description

Egg and Ego is a lighthearted look at the nature of academic science. It is intended for anyone interested in biology but particularly for biology students who want to find out what is in store for them in the future. It starts with an account of one particular experiment, which is later opened out to introduce the excitement arising from recent progress in associated areas of biology. It then describes the everyday aspects of scientific work, ignored by philosophers of science. These range from cleaning up radioactive contamination, to how to fill in biohazard forms, to how newly appointed professors bargain for money. The "Egg" of the title refers to the science of developmental biology, which is the specialty of the author, and which provides the material for many of the anecdotes. The "Ego" relates to the vanity of the scientists themselves. Academic scientists have to struggle to maintain their research funding. To do this they must persuade other scientists that they are very good, and that means work at a good institution, publishing papers in the most fashionable journals and giving lectures at the most prestigious meetings. Success often goes to those with the largest egos and their style of operation is described in this book. The final chapter is about relations between science and the outside world in the shape of the media, illustrated by the remarkable "case of the headless frog". The author is a well-known scientist who has worked at both universities and research institutes. He has published over 100 scientific papers and an influential book about embryonic development: "From Egg to Embryo".

                            4 out of 5 stars A Review from a Student's Perspective.......2001-03-27

As an undergraduate studying biology and hoping to pursue a career in research I found this book both informative and shocking. J.M.W Slack openly reveals all the ins and outs of "Life in the Biology lab." I strongly recommend this book to anyone curious to what's truly in store for them if they choose to enter a field of science.

4 out of 5 stars An unvarnished view of life as a research biologist..........2001-03-16

Slack does a grand job of telling his story...life and living as a researcher working on problems of development. Slack has the ability to get you to grin as he talks about cow brains, growth factors, and other scientific adventures..."Where are the brains, Dad?" (You'll have to read the book to know what that means.) He also ably tells what it's like to be a scientist, as well as how one negotiates the politics and requirements of becoming successful as a research scientist.

The format of the book is interesting. It includes several chapters that address what it's like ("Ego") to be a research scientist, i.e., chapters 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10. He defines what he calls "good places," as well as who "good people" are in the scientific community. If you are a budding scientist, these chapters contain nugget after nugget of wisdom and insight. This book is worth the price for them alone.

The remaining chapters, 3, 5, 8 contain the essence of the research that Slack and his group do, thus the "Egg" portion of the book's title. There is good information about the role of growth factors in development, and a broad brush review of the essentials of some of the processes of development and their molecular bases.

If you are up for a good read about life as a biologist, then come on along. The only reason I didn't award this book 5-stars is that there would be a strong tendency for those not trained in the sciences to get lost in the technical aspects of the chapters on developmental processes. For most biologists, however, especially for upper division undergraduate and graduate students, this book is a gem!

4 stars for the non-scientist, and 5 stars for the science crowd.

Kudos to Slack for this great little book (though he seems to take a rather dim view of places other than research universities -- we part ways there). There is, I believe, too strong a sentiment among researchers (represented by some of Slack's opinions) that what non-researcher biologists do, i.e., teach, is not just different, it is "less than." It all comes down to what you choose to do for your own career, and how you define success for yourself.

I hope this review was helpful!

Slack interweaves real science (Cell, Molecular and Developmental Biology; frog and fly biology) with job descriptions of biologists and events in the laboratory to portray the fragile existence of academic scientists.

As a career university biologist myself, I repeatedly found myself asking the question as I navigated through the book "Why did I get into this business in the first place?" Slack's work will certainly prompt the budding young scientist to confront their own destiny.

To those interested in what professors do (since they are not in the classroom 8 hours per day), this is the book for you. Though clearly written, the science is still not for everyone; occasionally, Slack lapses into jargon without definition. However, the lighthearted and accurate picture of life in the laboratory will certainly provide enough entertainment for any reader, especially if you are undecided if you want to spend the rest of your life cohabitating with an academic.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for a would be biomedical researcher.......1999-08-17

This is an excellent book for anyone who might have some idea that they might want to be a professional scientist, working in biomedical research or as a professor in a university. Slack writes very well and he can tell an amusing anecdote. There is a some good science in it too. He is slightly curmidgeonly, perhaps, but I think this is part of his appeal. He tells it like it is. Read this book to find out that being a research scientist, perhaps unfortunately, is like being in the corporate world, and scientists have egos just like anyone else. There is a wealth of guidance for a new 'starry eyed' student. Slack is a good scientist and he portrays with a light touch some of the characters he knows, journals, government regulations and career structures. In addition he explains how he got into science and why. Anyone who is already a biological scientist will find much to chuckle at and I think that all biology students should read it - particularly if contemplating going on to take a higher degree. This book is an antidote to the ridiculous idea that scientists are 'higher beings' concerned only with 'truth'.

I enjoyed this well written book about 10 of Hollywood's most famous mysterious deaths. The Author has a down to earth but glamorous writing style that is very appealing.
I feel that he did a fine job in giving the reader the facts, rumors and general story about each case even though as there are 10 cases in the book, he must have been hampered from getting as deep into the cases as he probably would have liked because of space constraints. He also makes a clear delineation between what is fact and what is speculation and rumor and that is always appreciated.
This book has a real air of Old Hollywood noir about it.
I look forward to reading the sequel to this book-More of Hollywood's Unsolved mysteries.

                                      Book Description

In Bound for America, Nicholas Temperley documents the lives, careers, and music of three British composers who emigrated from England in mid-career and became leaders in the musical life of the American Federal era.

William Selby of London and Boston (1738-98), Rayner Taylor of London and Philadelphia (1745-1825), and George K. Jackson of St. Andrews, New York, and Boston (1757-1822) were among the first trained professional composers to make their home in America, and are generally regarded as pioneers in the building of an art-music tradition in the New World that reflected the esteemed "classical" music of the Continent.

The three composers all began their work in London, one of Europe's greatest centers of music. Why, in middle age, would they emigrate and start over in uncertain and unfavorable conditions? How did the new environment affect their lives and careers? In seeking answers, Temperley explores each musician's youthful period in England, uncovering much new material. He compares their lives, careers, and compositional styles in the two countries and reflects on American musical nationalism and the changing emphasis in American musical historiography.

                                            Book Description

The mathematical underpinnings of games, whether they are strategic or games of chance, have been known for centuries, but are usually only understood by players and aficionados who have a background in mathematics. The author has succeeded in making that knowledge accessible, entertaining, and useful to everyone who likes to play and win.

The information applies to such diverse and popular games as Roulette, Monopoly™, Chess, Go, numerous card games, and many more. He reviews the mathematical foundations, probability, combinatorics, and mathematical game theory, the field that won John Nash of A Beautiful Mind the Nobel Prize, and emphasizes the implementation of these techniques so that players can put them to work immediately.

An extensive bibliography and sections describing the historical developments are welcome features to put the subject in a broader context

5 out of 5 stars Superb presenter of mathematics.......2007-05-28

This is a 500 page mathematical investigation of games using probability theory, game theory, and a variety of mathematical methods. The author finds winning strategies for many games, some of them surprisingly simple. For most games, the point is less to find a trick to win but to clearly explain how the game works and to answer some interesting questions. The author's ability to present mathematics in an understandable manner is possibly unsurpassed by any other writer.

In Chapter 16, entitled, "Games of Chance", the author presents an explanation of Markov chains and how they can be applied to Monopoly and to Chutes and Ladders. The explanation is clearer here than I have found elsewhere. The result of the calculation for Monopoly is two charts detailing the best investments in Monopoly. One chart ranks the monopolies according to how much rent income they will generate for the owner. The second chart ranks monopolies according to their return on investment or ROI, expected rent divided by cost. Thus we see, for example, that the highest rent comes from the green color group, Pennsylvania, and the best monopoly measured by ROI is the orange color group, New York. The author suggests these charts may be useful for deciding what properties to buy and where to buy houses.

The problem is that the results of the Markov chain calculation are not really useful for the important decisions Monopoly players must make. Players must buy nearly every ordinary property they land on in order to advance their chances of getting a monopoly and to block opponents from getting monopolies, so properties' ROIs and rents are almost completely irrelevant to the property buying decisions. After players trade properties, almost every player has one monopoly, not two or three or four, so the problem of deciding where to build the next house is not an issue...the player must put the house on his (lone) monopoly. Only after reaching the later stages of the game, usually after one of the players has been eliminated, do players have a choice about which monopoly to build out. Even in this regard, the chart is not useful. There is too much data to memorize and Monopoly culture discourages players from consulting charts in the middle of a game. Monopoly players bring snacks and drinks, but not charts.

The truly important decisions Monopoly players must make involve trading--which monopoly to take and which monopoly to allow an opponent to take. The data from a Markov chain calculation simply do not help much. What Monopoly players need to help them make this decision is the Monte Carlo method, which the book describes but does not apply toward Monopoly. A Monte Carlo simulation involves programming a computer to play the game, play the game thousands of times, and study what happened. This is exactly what I did for my Winning Monopoly book in 1987. A more detailed review of this book-at least, the portion dedicated to Monopoly-is posted on my web site, [...]

As this book points out, games fall into three broad categories:

                                            1. Games of Chance
                                            2. Games with a large number of combinations of different moves
                                            3. Different states of information among the individual players.

And this book is broken into three main sections, one for each of these.

Before you get too turned off, yes, there is some math in this book. But it is really not heavy duty. (After all, John Nash of A Beautiful Mind won the Nobel Prize for his work on game theory and his work was not simple math.) The authors explanations of the situations described in the games are very good are very good, and the minimal amount of math is really helpful.

Virtually all of the common games from from the lottery to chess and even Monopoly, as well as the casino games such as blackjack and Roulette are discussed in detail. For anyone interested in what's really going on in games they play, this is an extremely interesting book.

The author knows whereof he speaks, he is the general manager of a game design company based in Germany.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to the mathematics of games.......2005-08-17

So many books about the mathematics of games are either long out of print, hard to find, or fairly esoteric and not something I'd recommend to just anyone. The best book I've found for someone new to game math is Luck, Logic and White Lies by Jörg Bewersdorff. It introduces the reader to a vast mathematical literature, and does so in an enormously clear manner, which never takes one very far away from either the math or the games behind them. I love Winning Ways and On Numbers and Games, but they're definitely not for the faint of heart. LL&WL is the perfect book for gamers who are interested in the mathematics that underlie the choices they face and decisions they make. Just great stuff.

Written by the general manager of Mega-Spielgerate, a game design company based in Limburg, Germany, Luck, Logic & White Lies: The Mathematics Of Games is a no-nonsense instructional in basic probability, geometry, and mathematics as they apply to popular games. Topics discussed include popular myths among those who the lottery, to the question of whether it is possible to reconcile chance and mathematical certainty, to testing dice, the possibilities of distribution in a roulette, modern theories as applied to the classical game of Go, whether bluffing in poker can be done without psychology, and so much more. Written in plain terms, Luck, Logic & White Lies teaches readers of all backgrounds about the insight mathematical knowledge can bring and is highly recommended reading among avid game players, both to better understand the game itself and to improve one's skills.

                                            Book Description

Following on the heels of the author's immensely popular book, Deena Katz on Practice Management, this nuts-and-bolts resource illustrates its predecessor's time-saving concepts. Deena Katz's Tools and Templates for Your Practice elaborates on the first book's concepts by providing and explaining how to use the actual check sheets, forms, and procedures developed by top wealth managers and planners. It offers financial planners and advisers dozens of shortcuts to running an efficient, thriving practice. Whether financial planners have been in business for ten days or ten years, they will benefit from this book's commonsense, pragmatic approach to running a successful advisory practice.

The book is organized around the natural cycle of finding, developing, and keeping clients. It includes a free CD-ROM containing all the Microsoft Office forms and spreadsheets in the book, usuable on both PC and Macintosh platforms. Readers can customize these valuable tools to build a solid administrative structure for their businesses. Many of the book's documents will be maintained and updated on the Web, to help financial planners stay abreast of leading-edge thinking in practice management.

3 out of 5 stars Forms; great starting point for content, uneven presentation.......2007-09-05

The enclosed CD of forms provide a great starting point for content. Given the author is one of the nation's premier personal financial advisors, I expected the forms on the enclosed CD-Rom to be more sophisticated, as well as more consistent in presentation. Some of the forms are in Excel, others in Word. Before you could use these documents with a client you would need to do an overhaul to change the font, margins, headings, and outline style so that any binder of combined documents would not look thrown together.

If you need help promoting your practice, this gives you many ideas on what and how to do it. As to the forms, no new ideas here.

This book would be especially helpful for someone starting a new financial planning practice. The CD-ROM includes forms like a sample client contract, an investment policy statement and a load of other forms that would take hours to come up with on your own. Little things like a sample of her own ADV are also very useful if you are trying to set up a practice and wade through the maze of paperwork that will be required. While the book gives some practical advice on planning which may or may not be useful, depending on how experienced the planner is, the disk alone is worth the price of the book. One reviewer stated that the book isn't of much use to a broker/planner at a large firm (they have their own forms and procedures) but for an independent planner it's perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Great, usefull tools.......2005-01-19

As an independent planner, this book offers many tools that you can implement in your practice today! I'm so glad it came with the CD-rom so you can grab the templates and immediately start using them. Great ideas to build your practice!

1 out of 5 stars Not for Planners in large broker-dealer firms!.......2002-09-15

I read all the stellar reviews posted on here and ordered the book and was very disappointed.

This book is good for individual brokers and small firms, but there is nothing in here for someone who is a planner/advisor of a large broker/dealer. Everything in here should be at your brokerage house for those working for the top 15 or so firms in the country.

Even the Monte Carlo game, which is discussed a lot in this book, is something a lot of trainees go through with their broker/dealers.

Independents and small firms will like it, and it is probably a VERY GOOD reference for them because it is put together well...but its the same ole stuff for others.
