The bible of Northwest natural history.......2005-11-12

Whenever I have a question about plants, animals, geology, weather, tides, or history of the Puget Sound region, this well-organized book is the place I start. Kruckeberg is amazingly comprehensive and knowledgeable. The book is superbly illustrated, though in black and white. The writing is clear. While a new edition would be welcome, this classic remains timeless.

A good ferry book.......2004-10-23

Commuting by ferry I always have a few books with me to fill the time either on the crossing or in the line of cars. This is a great book for just that, since it's full of interesting facts and it can be picked up and browsed at just about any place within it. It has lots of interesting graphs, illustrations and photos and has more information than any casual nature lover could require.

Very detailed, scholarly work, description of landforms, geology, soils, climate, vegetation, habitats, animal life, marine life, water resources. Overview of Indian tribes. Bibliography for all subjects is probably 200-300 references. Kruckeburg is Prof. of Botany at University of Washington.

I always travel with Fodors. They have a very easy setup. They have listings for nightlife, hotels, recreation and shopping. Restaurants and hotels are divided up according to price and reviewed. Maps are given of popular tourist areas. It's great for planning ahead.

excellent intro to the "why's" of history.......2007-05-18

Celia Bland's passion for her subject shows in this book. It is packed with information, good and bad about the industrial revolution, why it came about, who suffered as a result and who benefited. If information like this were taught in school textbooks, our children would grow up to be far more thoughtful, more responsible citizens.

This book represents the Proceedings of the 37th European Marine Biology Symposium, held in Reykjavík, Iceland, 5-9 August 2002. The main themes of the symposium were Migrations and Dispersal of Marine Organisms. These themes are highly relevant today. There is widespread man-aided dispersal (e.g. by ballast water) of marine plants and animals, which may have substantial effects on the regions receiving new species. The new introductions may result in reduced diversity of plants and animals and may affect natural resources in the countries receiving toxic algae and other foreign elements. Studies of changes in distribution and dispersal of marine animals and plants are also highly relevant with reference to the changing climate taking place. The study of dispersal has recently gained new impetus with the discovery of the remarkable communities found on isolated hydrothermal vents and cold water seeps in the world's oceans.
This book should appeal to a broad group of biologists, and especially marine ecologists. Four papers are based on keynote addresses, given by world authorities in their respective fields, on the state of the art of different important aspects of dispersal and migrations. These are followed by papers covering a wide field, from the rafting of macrobenthic animals on human debris, the spread of the Chinese mitten crap in Europe, the migrations of diatoms, and the seasonal movements of copepods, to mention but a few.

Another small book with huge value for a small lab........2006-08-12

We all take extraction for granted. We do it all the time, we chemists at least. But how many of us really know whats going on?

This book contains the advanced mathematical algorithms, the tables of compounds, the lists of inherent properties that allow you to make an accurate descision based on what will work best rather than "ether always works", or "DCM is too toxic, but boy can it extract anything" or "ethyl acetate at least smells ok".

This book contains illustration of every type of extraction apparatus used, most of which are still in use. Soxhlet, liquid liquid of many different designs etc.

it's a little daunting at first, but let the pictures draw you in and use it to answere your first question - which solvent do I choose for the extraction i'm working on now - and you will find it very easy to come to a very convincing conclusion. There are some really scary looking mathematical formulae, and i'm terrible at math, but I was able to use them.

Description:
A method was optimized and validated for the simultaneous determination of residues of organochlorine (OCPs) and organophosphorus (OPPs) pesticides in meat samples from chicken, pork and lamb. The method is based in the extraction of homogenized meat mixed with sodium sulphate and ethyl acetate in polytron, although both Soxhlet and accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) were also tested. Then, a clean-up step by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was applied, before the final determination by gas chromatography (GC) coupled to a triple quadrupole (QqQ) mass spectrometry (MS) detection system. Confirmation criteria of the pesticides were based in the 2002/657/EC European Commission Decision that establishes at least three identification points (IPs) for organic residues in live animals and animal products. The analytical process was validated in each matrix by the analysis of spiked blank samples. Performance characteristics, such as linearity, detection limit (LOD), quantitation limit (LOQ), precision and recovery were studied. Recoveries and precision values were 70.0-90.0% and 15%, respectively, for the bulk majority of pesticides. LOD <2.0 and LOQ <5.0@mg/kg were obtained for all the target compounds, except for acephate. The proposed analytical methodology was applied to the analysis of the pesticides in 30 samples, 10 from chicken, 10 from pork and 10 from lamb. Only three OCPs, endosulfan @a, endosulfan sulfate and dichloran were detected in three different lamb samples, while endosulfan @a was detected in only one pork sample, at concentration levels lower than the LOQ values. However, pesticide residues were not found in any of the other 10 chicken samples analyzed.

Estimation of Distribution Algorithms (EDAs) are a set of algorithms in the Evolutionary Computation (EC) field characterized by the use of explicit probability distributions in optimization. Contrarily to other EC techniques such as the broadly known Genetic Algorithms (GAs) in EDAs, the crossover and mutation operators are substituted by the sampling of a distribution previously learnt from the selected individuals. EDAs have experienced a high development that has transformed them into an established discipline within the EC field.

This book attracts the interest of new researchers in the EC field as well as in other optimization disciplines, and that it becomes a reference for all of us working on this topic. The twelve chapters of this book can be divided into those that endeavor to set a sound theoretical basis for EDAs, those that broaden the methodology of EDAs and finally those that have an applied objective.

the most infamous villain.......2006-12-31

Gilles de Rais was one of the most famous soldiers in the Hundred Years War. But because of his success he thought he could get away with anything. Even when he was murdering hundreds of children, he didn't think he was doing something that was against the law. In satanic rites he sacrificed children to the devil, sodomizing their bodies and preserving the heads of the pretty ones.

It is kind of a miracle that the trial documents still exist to this day. Therefore it is great to read the opinions of the people who lived with the original bluebeard, and what they thought of him. Bataille does a great job examining the crimes, trials and confessions of this 15th century serial killer.

A lucid, intelligent book about a true monster.......2000-11-04

Georges Bataille's work varies wildly in quantity. His early essays, collected in "Visions of Excess", are interesting but by now rather amusing blood-and-thunder manifestoes, swirling with Nietzschean rhetoric, the kind of thing that makes certain young male academics feel the blood rising in their nads so that they'll write anguished tomes on postmodernism that no-one but their students will ever read. His slightly later "Literature and Evil" is one of the silliest and shallowest books of litcrit ever inflicted on an undeserving public. His novel "Story of the Eye" is insubstantial as literature and uninvolving as pornography. This late work consists of a sober essay on the French nobleman Gilles de Rais and the documents from Gilles' trial in 1440. I think it's the best book Bataille ever wrote.

Gilles de Rais was a genuine nutcase. Born into great wealth, he was raised by his brutal and amoral great-grandfather and was a natural knight - i.e., he was violent, addicted to luxury and spectacle, and appeared not to give a toss about anyone. He distinguished himself in battle alongside Joan of Arc, but when the wars were over, Gilles appears to found life a bit lacking in savour. So, with the help of some of his entourage, he found a new way of spicing things up. He would typically ride to the nearest village, select a handsome young person between the age of 8 and 20 (usually male, but female where no boys were available) and bring the child back to his castle to be tortured, raped and murdered. He particularly liked to cut the body open and gaze on the insides. Then he'd go to sleep and his associates would dispose of the body.

Nobody is quite sure how many children he killed this way, but the estimates run into hundreds. The locals were scared because Gilles was a rich and powerful nobleman, Marshal of France, and the nobility tolerated the rumours for exactly the same reason. The Bluebeard legend became attached to his name (in spite of the fact that it was much older than him) and he certainly lived up to it.

Bataille's analysis of Gilles' character is hard to argue with. The Marshal of France was a vain, reckless, gullible, almost incredibly stupid young man - and yet the delirious extravagance of his crimes lends him a horrible grandeur. Gilles very quickly got completely out of control. The stories of his giggling at the dying bodies of his victims make him almost pathetic, as well as disgusting. He was finally arrested when he gratuitously insulted the men of the last person willing to protect him. He was tried for the murder of several children, found guilty and hanged. His body was to be burned, but it was pulled out of the flames and buried not without honour. He seems to have inspired a weird pity in people.

On the evidence of the trial documents, it's hard to doubt that Gilles was either mad or evil. Yet he lacked the true psychopaths' instinct for self-preservation, and his repentance seems to have been as tearfully sincere as his crimes were remorseless. Maybe he just had absolutely no imagination. Either way, this is a rigorously truthful and forensic book about one of the most frightening people who ever lived, far above the level of the average true crime potboiler. My only objection is Tom Dolan's cover design (at least in the Amok Books edition) - apparently a close-up photo of a bare torso with a nasty case of chickenpox, pointless and icky compared to the Grand Guignol within. Richard Robinson's translation is admirable in style; not having read the original French, I can't vouch for its accuracy, but I see no reason to doubt it.
