5 out of 5 stars A GREAT book about noble creatures of the deep.......2007-10-10

This book is fantastic; a great read, very informative and a real page-turner. Total E-Z read too. Recommend it in hardcover; you'll want to keep it on your bookshelf forever.

5 out of 5 stars Who Knew Lobsters Could Be So Entertaining?.......2007-10-08

This was an awesome read and was the book that began me interested in reading books about obscure animals. Since this book, I have read books about the platypus, coelacanth, and other wonderous creatures of the world. I learned alot about the lobster and the men that search for them as livelihood or scientific endeavor. This book willnot disappoint! Read it!

5 out of 5 stars Self-imposed or Government-mandated regulation?.......2007-10-05

Trevor Corson does a great job of putting a face on the lobster fishery, including its past, its future, and of some of the people who participate in it. It also does a super job at opening the door so we can catch a glimpse of relationships between lobstermen, the scientific community, and government agencies that have connections to America's fisheries.

I am an invertebrate zoologist by training, and I teach courses in marine biology and invertebrate zoology. Even a of couple years after reading this book I refer to it in my classes. Corson provides some good summary information on the status of our understanding of the ecology and reproductive biology of the American lobster, as well as the status of the Maine lobster fishery.

If you are like me, you will be impressed by the self-regulating fisheries practices developed and used by lobstemen that have maintained the lobster fishery for many, many years. If the info in the book is accurate, it appears that problems crop up in the fishery most often when government agencies try to develop and impose their own regulations on lobstermen. That was an eye-opener.

Another delightful part of the book explored interactions between lobstermen and the scientific community. Their developing relationship appears to have potential to benefit both parties.

I found the book to be readable and enjoyable through and through.

5 stars for fun (and food)

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-09-21

This was an absolutely fascinating book! Who knew lobsters were so interesting? Not me!

4 out of 5 stars Must reading for lobster fans !!.......2007-09-09

This entertaining book provides many insights about the New England lobster and the lobster industry. Corson describes the adventurous lives of these tenacious relatives of the spider. Every year they walk miles from deep in the continental shelf to find the warm summer waters close to shore. There they lay their eggs, shed their shells, and occasionally find their way into lobster pots.

A lobsterman himself, Corson also shares his own experience as one of the last breed of seafaring "hunter-gatherers". Importantly, he also describes how the lobster industry has tried preserve the lobster population through scientifc research and restrictions on harvesting.

As one who grew up in a lobstering town, I found this book very informative and entertaining, with a great balance of marine biology, New England history and good old fashioned story-telling. It is a "must read" for anyone interested in knowing more about the coastal environment, the New England fishery--or that boiled red crustacean starring at the clambake.

find they are no longer there. This was true on 3 out of 5
entries. Needs to be updated or removed from circulation.

This book has saved me hundreds of dollars, starting with a computer program that I bought for $500 less than its list price. I find it indispensible for locating cheap sources for almost anything I want to buy, as well as good places to resell household items I no longer need. My only caveat is that since it's now 3 years old, I'd call first to make sure the business you want to visit hasn't closed. I'm waiting eagerly for the next edition!

                Book Description

Ion chemistry and physics, primarily in the gas phase, underpins all types of mass spectrometry. An understanding of the principles underlying the production, reactions, separation and detection of ions is therefore essential to the effective application of mass spectrometry. The technique continues to be most versatile, providing fundamental information on ions in the gas phase, on surfaces, in clusters, etc., and also finding increasingly widespread use in the chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries. The present book draws together leading workers in the fields of mass spectrometry and gas phase ion chemistry, providing a forum for the exchange of ideas ind information. In addition to the 14 lecture summaries, the book also contains accounts of seven workshops with contributions from many groups in Europe and North America. It will be of interest to all who work in the field.

                            Book Description

The complex flows in the atmosphere and oceans are believed to be accurately modelled by the Navier-Stokes equations of fluid mechanics together with classical thermodynamics. However, due to the enormous complexity of these equations, meteorologists and oceanographers have constructed approximate models of the dominant, large-scale flows that control the evolution of weather systems. The simplifications often result in models that are amenable to solution both analytically and numerically. This volume and its companion explain why such simplifications to Newton's second law produce accurate, useful models and, just as the meteorologist seeks patterns in the weather, mathematicians seek structure in the governing equations. They show how geometry and analysis facilitate solution strategies.

                            Book Description

When The Wapshot Chronicle was published in 1957, John Cheever was already recognized as a writer of superb short stories. But The Wapshot Chronicle, which won the 1958 National Book Award, established him as a major novelist.

Based in part on Cheever's adolescence in New England, the novel follows the destinies of the impecunious and wildly eccentric Wapshots of St. Botolphs, a quintessential Massachusetts fishing village. Here are the stories of Captain Leander Wapshot, venerable sea dog and would-be suicide; of his licentious older son, Moses; and of Moses' adoring and errant younger brother, Coverly. Tragic and funny, ribald and splendidly picaresque, The Wapshot Chronicle is a family narrative in the tradition of Trollope, Dickens, and Henry James.

4 out of 5 stars Archetypal yet accessible.......2007-08-18

The further I got into the book, the less interested I became in the characters themselves. Cheever has molded them into people who are also archetypes, and this seems to reverberate more deeply as the novel advances. I don't particularly follow Jung's archetypal images, don't care much about them, but as the characters unfold they become--as in an old medieval manuscript--emblems of such as Sleeping Beauty and the Prince, Miss Havisham and Estella. The rich prose adds gilt to this weaving of life, nature, death, striving, and possession. Near the end, when Cheever interpolates the closing lines of The Tempest ("...We are such stuff as dreams are made of...") I was as affected as if I had just read one of the bard's own plays.

                            5 out of 5 stars Memorable narrative........2007-06-07

I believe that every one should read this book twice: the first to get touched by the beautiful story, the characters that pop up all the book, the almost tangible Cheever's New England, etc. - the second to understand and learn how a masterpiece is created and how some books became gifts to the mankind. This is the kind of book that you get upset when it is over and you start advising your friends to read it as slow and quiet as possible. John Cheever is - no doubt - one of the great writers of the XX century, and this book shows why.

4 out of 5 stars Unique story, quick read.......2006-12-14

This is one of those books that follows the lives of a limited number of idiosyncratic people (otherwise known as a "character study"). As I am particularly fond of the "character study" genre, I found this book to be an enjoyable, quick read. It might be a bit outdated to the modern reader, but..."nifty"...nonetheless. Buy it used for a reasonable price.

                            4 out of 5 stars Wapshot Chronicle.......2006-12-14

In this comic novel, John Cheever revels in the power of the written word. Leander Wapshot, hero of the book, is endlessly browbeaten by his sister Honora and his wife Sarah, but through the journal he keeps, despite his writing in choppy, incomplete sentences, he's able to rise above his humiliations and is even able to give some good advice to his son Coverly at the very end of the novel in a scrap of paper Coverly finds in a volume of Shakespeare belonging to Leander. The novel is also concerned with Leander's two sons, Coverly and Moses, as they leave home to seek their fortunes. Moses' story is fairly complicated, with many different adventures and twists and turns, and both he and Coverly end up in not very promising marriages. Cheever is at his strongest in character development and at his weakest in plot construction; in fact, there's hardly a plot at all. The dialogue is superb, however, and therein lies much of the humor of the book. I regard Cheever a better short story writer than a novelist, but there's still much to admire in this National Book Award-winning novel, his first.

                            5 out of 5 stars A wonderful, underrated novel!.......2006-06-26

Cheever is one of the most underrated American authors, and he's almost as good here as in his best short stories, which may be the best by an American. (A bold statement, I know. But I really do like him better than Hawthorne, Melville, Hemingway, certainly O'Connor. Maybe the other WASP John--Updike--is his only real contender.)

Anyway, the only thing I don't like about this edition of the book is that it is introduced by, of all people, Rick Moody, who is as pitiful a stylist as Cheever is a great one. What an atrocious pairing, kind of like having Escher write about Matisse, or having Huey Lewis write about Rush.
