The story of Paul Rezendes's spiritual journey began when he was leader of a motorcycle gang (i.e., a Devil's Disciple). His dangerous life of narcotics and guns eventually caught up with him and he and his wife found themselves in trouble with the law. His legal hassles gave him the perfect excuse to back out of the gang; thus he reneged on his lifelong commitment. (Apparently, motorcycle gangs are a lot like the Mafia; he muses, "You better have a damn good reason to leave.") From then on Rezendes began a furtive spiritual quest that led him into the woods, following the paw and hoof prints of wild animals.

Like Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Rezendes teaches the art of animal tracking and stalking, all the while making the link to the clean, observant Zen mind. "Stalking meditation demands that we pay full attention to every footfall, every breath, every sound we make, each nuance of landscape, wind, humidity," he writes. "Stalking gives us the opportunity to move away from the tiny perspective of thought and self into all-encompassing awareness." Rezendes, a renowned teacher of seminars and workshops, uses personal tracking stories to emphasize the importance of focused observation. But more importantly, his storytelling challenges readers to be spiritually accountable in the wild as well as everyday life.--Gail Hudson

Book Description

As Jon Krakauer writes of "the dark side of the wilderness experience," Paul Rezendes writes of the spiritual side. Rezendes is one of this country's most skilled outdoorsmen: a master wildlife tracker with an uncanny ability to communicate the profound lessons he has learned from the wild about territoriality, awareness, fear, the inseparability of life and death, and the true nature of the self. Through hard personal experience, Rezendes discovered how tracking can be a powerful tool for understanding our deep connections with nature and with one another. The leader of two notorious motorcycle gangs in the early 1960s, he faced a ten-year prison sentence for drugs and illegal weapons charges. His sentence was revoked, and Rezendes transformed his life path from gang leader to Zen master, founding an ashram in southeastern Massachusetts and honing the tracking skills with which he was raised. In The Wild Within, Rezendes punctuates a gripping

narrative of his wilderness adventures with simple exercises that show readers how to turn off their conscious minds and use their deeper intelligence to enter a state of oneness with the environment and to deal more effectively with daily life. In the words of Dianne Dumanoski of the Boston Globe, "Paul Rezendes's [work] is about tracking, but also much more; it shows how to find your way home to the great web of life."

5 out of 5 stars Remembering An Ancient Art.......2007-09-20

There are many reasons why this book keeps getting better for me each time I read it.

I'm going to explain one of them here. Most of us have forgotten that human cultures once entered into relationship with the nonhuman community not as exploiters but as equals. And because of this the people of these cultures could read the tracks and signs of nonhumans better than most of us can read a book. And because of this they understood themselves and the nonhuman community much more intimately than most of us do in our alienated state.

Through his very lucid way of storytelling, Paul makes it very clear that no matter who we are, and what path we have chosen to take up until this point in our lives, we can still reconnect with ourselves and the rest of life on this planet.

5 out of 5 stars Someone who walks the talk........2006-10-16

I give Paul's book my highest recommendation. If you've ever read a book by Tom Brown you will find a home in these pages of wildness - both inner and outer. A wilderness philosophy/ecopsychology of place takes you deep within your own process of healing and awareness with wilderness. Wilderness can heal whatever illness the modern world has inflicted. Paul is an astonishing guide into this realm of spirit and psyche. Enjoy it; but most of all if it calls to your heart, take the next step into the world of wild nature. In this place, "Spirit" speaks to those capable of listening. You may never be the same again.

1 out of 5 stars What a Hypocrite!.......2005-11-17

After reading Paul Rezendes's "The Wild Within" for my nonfiction class, I am convinced Mr. Rezendes is a hypocrite. After leaving the "Devil's Disciples" motorcycle gang, Rezendes embarked on a journey to "find himself." He tried on many sets of beliefs, including Ashram and Roman Catholocism. Rezendes was extremely critical of both sects, Ashram because he thought it was hypocritical and Roman Catholocism because he did not receive an annulment from the Pope on his wife's marriage. Both of these sets of circumsatnces are layered with irony. The tone of Rezendes's book suggests that after leaving Ashram he did not drop the holier-than-thou attitude he picked up during that phase of his life: He continues to put his beliefs on a pedastal, trying to "show his readers the way." If his past life is any indication, within five years he will have demolished his current set of beliefs and published another book debunking them, telling readers about how he alone knows the new secrets and interworkings of the universe. I find it amusing that he rejected Roman Catholicism for lack of his WIFE being granted an annulment, considering how many times he himself had been married and all the people he had abused throughout his life.

The book reads like the journal of a very pompous evangelist who thinks he has discovered the meaning of life. Being unaffected by any religious bias whatsoever, I know one thing. I don't know the meaning of life... But Rezendes doesn't either.

5 out of 5 stars One of a kind.......2004-03-26

I'm teaching an environmental psychology class and this is the best book I've found to integrate the concepts of the self, thought, and human behavior. Rezendes has a way of explaining complex concepts in a truly engaging and understandable way. My students love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Stalking As Connection.......2002-11-24

There are many ways to connect with spirit. Paul Rezendes tells how tracking animals can be a spiritual meditation. In the still of nature, the tracker must pay attention to every sign, every cue of the animal's tracks to succeed in knowing the animal in its fullness. As you stalk, you see, hear and feel what is normally hidden by the mind's chatter or the distractions of time. You are in the Now.

The reward for such concentration is to know the unique beauty of the animal you follow. And in this knowing, you bring into yourself the wildness of nature that is always part of you.

Through stalking meditation, Paul Rezendes shows that the wildness of the loon is love. The wildness of the moose is sharing. Bears teach appropriate fear. All nature teaches connection. Rezendes inspires you to seek wildness. Go for it! It comes to you.

Book Description

"A cat is a lion in a jungle of small bushes."
--English proverb

Why do cats always land on their feet after a fall? What allows a sleeping cat to comfortably curl into a circle? Why do cats appear to torture their prey before killing it? Why does your cat knead on your clothing? Just how much attention do cats really require?

To answer these and other questions, Wild Discovery Guide to Your Cat draws from science, history, and feline behavior in the wild to explain the inner nature and most puzzling characteristics of America's most popular pet. The result is a practical and fascinating guide to understanding and caring for these beguiling and enigmatic creatures.

This engagingly illustrated book takes the same cat's-eye view of the world that infuses the Discovery Channel television series Wild Discovery. It emphasizes the untamed roots of almost every aspect of a domesticated cat's conduct: the crouch-and-pounce string-chase games that mirror stalking prey in the wild, the furniture-scratching preoccupation that echoes the territorial scent deposits a wild cat claws onto trees. Written in an accessible, authoritative style, Wild Discovery Guide to Your Cat generously mixes the fundamentals of basic care with compelling explorations into cats' physical and psychological traits.

Included in this comprehensive primer are detailed insights into all aspects of cat design, from the intricate structure of the feline form to the cat's heightened senses and remarkable agility. The guide explores why cats do the things they do--addressing such issues as grooming, sleep patterns, marking and defending territory, cat language, and learning and intelligence.

In addition to probing the tiger within, Wild Discovery Guide to Your Cat offers a host of practical tips on choosing a cat to suit your lifestyle, providing responsible care, cat-proofing your home, and ensuring a smooth transition during the first days at home. Once the cat is a member of the family, the book explains how to bond and play with your new pet, and even how to train and travel with it.

Everything you need to know to keep your cat healthy and happy is covered, including the latest information on feeding and nutrition, litter boxes, cleaning and grooming, common health problems, fighting fleas, pregnancy and birth, caring for an aging cat, vet visits, and emergency care.

A breed breviary rounds out the book, with the spotlight on the top cat breeds as well as other common feline pedigrees. This section also presents information on body type, common colors, coat type, grooming requirements, and temperament. An informative cat owner's resource guide follows.

Accompanied by more than 225 full-color illustrations and photographs showing the similarities between domestic and wild cats, this is an entertaining and insightful approach to feline behavior, pet care, and appreciation for first-time cat owners and veteran cat lovers alike.

Lush, lovely, informative and practical, Wild Discovery Guide to Your Cat is a feast for both the eye and the mind...a good introduction to cat care and behavior for novices and also serves as an interesting read for long-time cat owners...There's something for everyone in this book...one of the most educational books to come along in a long time.--Cats, April 2000

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book for those who plan to have a cat!.......2001-06-29

This book gives an excellent overview about cat behaviour and care. It is very direct and not complicated. However I did not give 5 stars because I wish they would have detailed more about feline diseases such as FIV and leukemia. For those who already have cats (like me) the book makes clear certain attitudes that we all know such as lots of sleeping, hissing, feline intelligence, the way they show their love and so on.

On the other side, if you plan to get a cat/kitten from your shelter or any other place have this book first, it has an excellent section on how to choose the right cat. And also a good section why you should not declaw your cat and all the care you will have with your feline companion.

5 out of 5 stars Cat Knowledge for every Cat Owner.......2000-03-31

After owning my first cat, I decided to read about cats. I found "Wild Discovery Guide to your Cat" very helpful in understanding more about my cat. I discovered why my cat behaves the way he behaves and how to treat him if he becomes sick. This book made me understand my cat a lot better and to be able to make a better home for him. The book ranged from topics on the different types of cats to how to help a cat adjust to a new home. I especially enjoyed the sections on what to do when a cat is sick or injured, particularly what signs to look for in a sick cat. Of course, the pictures of the various cats were great and helpful in understanding various situations with cats. Overall, I was very impressed with the book. I plan on purchasing the book for friends who are cat lovers.

Book Description

"How much better we would be as dog
owners if we knew who dogs really are and
understood what motivates them."
--from the Foreword by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas

Why are dogs typically so devoted to their human companions? What is "pack mentality," and what does it have to do with your dog? How did breeds as different as Great Danes and dachshunds evolve? What kind of dog is best for a household with small children?

From barking to marking, wet noses to wagging tails, Wild Discovery Guide to Your Dog answers the most puzzling questions you've ever had about these most companionable animals. In the spirit of the Discovery Channel television series Wild Discovery, this book delves into the heart of dog behavior, every beat of which is, in fact, an echo of the wolf ancestors in each dog's bloodline. You'll recognize the wolf's defense of territory in your dog's wild barking at every passing postal worker, and see wolf-pack hierarchy in the domestic dog's devotion to his human master.

Written in an accessible, authoritative style, Wild Discovery Guide to Your Dog breaks through "smart dog, dumb dog" misconceptions, instead offering fascinating insights into dog learning, language, and intelligence, all factors influenced by the legacy of the wild dog within.

This book is also packed with practical tips on the fundamentals of dog care, particularly as they relate to your dog's breed, his heightened senses, and the various life stages through which he'll pass. Included is expert advice on choosing a dog to suit your lifestyle, caring responsibly for your pet, dog-proofing your home, and ensuring a smooth transition and proper bonding during the first days at home. Once the dog is a member of your family, this useful guide explains how best to play with him, keep him safe, and even train him and travel with him.

Everything you need to know to keep your dog healthy and happy is covered, including feeding and nutrition, cleaning and grooming, common health problems, fighting fleas, pregnancy and birth, caring for an aging dog, vet visits, and emergency care.

A detailed breed breviary rounds out the book. The spotlight is on each of the fifty most popular dog pedigrees: its origin, life expectancy, coat type, grooming requirements, size, activity level, and temperament. An informative dog owner's resource guide follows.

Generously illustrated with more than 225 appealing, full-color photographs showing the striking similarities between domestic and wild dogs, Wild Discovery Guide to Your Dog will strike the fancy of first-time dog owners and veteran dog lovers alike.

5 out of 5 stars Knowing your Dog, the whole story.......2000-04-18

A very comprehensive book; everything from dog behavior in the wild, to your pet's behavior, to how to take care and train your pet. I own 2 dogs and have obedience trained them and this book was correct on so many points that are so important to a successful pet/owner relationship. Wonderful photos and captions emphasize all the learning points. I especially liked the Dog Care section that showed basic health care for your dog. Overall a wonderful and broad range of topics that helped me understand my dogs even more.

Book Description

An innocent act of kindness turns a bear into a dangerous marauder and when she is killed she leaves her three cubs without a mother. Stephen Stringham and his new bride decided to raise these three orphan cubs in the Alaska wilderness. Together, they taught Ontak, Chrislee, and Jonjoanak about which plants they could eat and how to fish and hunt. Dr. Stringham's extensive scientific background made him an ideal teacher of the foraging skills and the social skills they would need to live in a bear's world. In the process of teaching them, Stringham learns from the cubs how bears express fear, anger, and how to appease defensive bears and intimidate the aggressive ones.

He and his wife would develop trust and respect through their affection and play, helping to heal the cubs' emotional wounds and decrease their aggression and violence. As the Springhams' bond with their furry charges deepens, they realize that it is a connection that is all too uncommon between people and animals. When Dr. Stringham is told by the Department of Fish and Game to destroy the bears, the depth of that bond would be tested. Beauty within the Beast is a heartwarming true story of how people and animals can find common ground and live in harmony on earth.

As many in this world know, very few will experience the Bear. Dr. Stringham skillfully shares his experience with the Ursus kind in a manner which allows the laymen to touch this creature in the comfort of the armchair.

I have much respect for what Steve has done, both in this book and his career, and hope that my words may spread the message that is contained in this book. I truly know that this will become a classic; in the true spirit of Michio Hoshino...Please write more Steve!

5 out of 5 stars Real Life Adventure.......2002-11-19

Few of us will ever have the opportunities that Dr. Stringham has had, to live intimately with wild animals on a daily baisis and observe them close at hand. Dr. Stringham has written an enchanting and engaging accout of raising three wild bear cubs in the Alaskan wilderness. Bears have been revealed as intelligent and adaptive creatures who occupy a unique niche in the American wilderness, comparable to the niche primates occupy in Africa. This book is exciting, highly readable and hard to put down. Dr. Stringham is not only a gifted wildlife biologist, but a gifted writer; his descriptions are beautiful. I love this book, as has every other person I know who has had the fortune to read it. Christine Nicolayeff

5 out of 5 stars Kinship with Bears.......2002-11-19

Beauty, personality, kin, children, learning beings--what a picture of these brown bears we are given, by Dr. Stringham. The previous reviewer (blessed282) has describe the beautiful attributes of this book well. I can only add: It is wonderful. I can't wait for his next one!

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome Book.......2002-07-12

Reading this book was a privilege. The author writes with a sensitive and wonderfully descriptive style. I found myself fascinated from the moment I picked it up until I put it down. It is at once an adventure, and a love story of an unusual kind. In reading this book, I felt his reverence for wild animals, particularly for bears, and I learned to look at them as something far more than I had before. I was not overwhelmed by the science in the book, because it was so skillfully interwoven with his description of raising three black bear cubs. Dr. Stringham has created a treasure, and I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars choice depends on your style of travel.......2002-04-18

I checked this out of my local library along with Lonely Planet's version for comparison before buying a guidebook for my trip. Frommer's has good coverage of major sights to see in the more popular tourist spots. However, their book skipped a lot of lesser-known sights and areas that were covered in Lonely Planet (I particularly noticed this for archaeological sites, my own favorite category). On the other hand, Frommer's provides better coverage of hotels and restaraunts, and includes a wider range of middle- to high-priced choices, especially. If your approach to travel is to see as much as is humanly possible each day and return to your hotel only to sleep (as mine is), I'd go with Lonely Planet's version for its more thorough coverage of lesser-known destinations and its budget lodgings. If you like to choose distinctive hotels and restaraunts and spend a significant part of your trip enjoying them, Frommer's is probably a better option.

If the book was written by Frommer, it is a great book. I can't wait to go to scotland. He gave maps that were legible, rated restaurants and hotels in all price ranges and lots of helpful hints for first time and regular travellers.

                          Book Description

In most terrestrial and aquatic habitats, the vast majority of animals transmitting and receiving communicative signals are arthropods. This book presents the story of how this important group of animals use pheromones, sound, vibration, and light for sexual and social communication. Because of their small to minute body size most arthropods have problems sending and receiving acoustic and optical information, each of which have their own severe constraints. Because of these restraints they have developed chemical signaling which is not similarly limited by scale. Presenting the latest theoretical and experimental findings from studies of signaling, it suggests that close parallels between arthropods and vertebrates reflect a very limited number of solutions to problems in behavior that are available within the confines of physical laws.

                                Book Description

The purpose of the book is to take stock of the situation concerning Algebra via Category Theory in the last fifteen years, where the new and synthetic notions of Mal'cev, protomodular, homological and semi-abelian categories emerged. These notions force attention on the fibration of points and allow a unified treatment of the main algebraic: homological lemmas, Noether isomorphisms, commutator theory.
The book gives full importance to examples and makes strong connections with Universal Algebra. One of its aims is to allow appreciating how productive the essential categorical constraint is: knowing an object, not from inside via its elements, but from outside via its relations with its environment.
The book is intended to be a powerful tool in the hands of researchers in category theory, homology theory and universal algebra, as well as a textbook for graduate courses on these topics.

It is with a peculiar sense of duality one reads this ancient work. While your mind is absorbed in the meaning of the words you utter, the melody in which you utter them tells your heart a tale of its own. You live in two distinct worlds at once. Naphtali had little to say to other people, but he seemed to have much to say to himself. His singsongs were full of meaning, of passion, of beauty. Quite often he would sing himself hoarse.

5 out of 5 stars A classic that should be better-known.......2006-10-17

I was prompted to buy and read this book by a bookclub-type event, and I am very glad to recommend this novel. Written in 1917 about an era even earlier than that, it is a classic tale of the immigrant experience, the American experience, and the Jewish experience, in the USA. The various pulls of culture, assimilation, poverty, wealth, sex, solitude, religion, secularism, education, and commerce are each subtly examined, so subtly that one doesn't realize until afterwards how much has been packed into a relatively simple story.
This Penguin version is the one to buy, it is compact, in readable type, and with a useful preface. Amazon is selling another version in an oversized paperback format--skip that one, it is awkward in size, and with many typos in the text. I actually disposed of that one and repurchased it in the Penguin paperback version.

                                5 out of 5 stars A Great Business Novel.......2004-12-30

"The Rise of David Levinsky" is a great business novel. Cahan describes how Mr. L becomes a successful maker of men's coats, and how L's ex-partner's wife become a very successful real estate entrepreneur. Actual description of how business success has been achieved is rarely shown in novels: it's available here.

5 out of 5 stars A major early work of American - Jewish Literature .......2004-11-07

There is an irony in the title. Cahan has a hero rise in wealth and position in the society only to be empty inside. There is a price to his Americanization in the loss in some deep sense of his past source of meaning in life.
This is a pioneering tale of American- Jewish Literature. It gives a picture of a world no longer with us.
It is clearly and well - written, and if it is not in the category of great Literature, still it is a valuable social document. It is well worth reading especially for those interested in ' immigrant literature'.

5 out of 5 stars Social realism with a soul.......2004-07-01

I read this novel the first time in college and am re-reading it now. The social realism dazzled me then, but it's the incisive characterization that strikes me more now. You get a sense of objective social conditions, but a deeper and deeper sense of the main characters' souls as you read further along. Some of the sketches of human emotion sound familiar as something that happened to me yesterday.

I believe this helps Cahan make his point, of Levinsky's material accomplishment and spiritual impoverishment. He gradually becomes emptied out, so to speak. He has lost his traditional religion and rejected the socialist substitute for religion. At the beginning, he has little but knows who he is - at the end, he has much but seems a stranger to himself.

4 out of 5 stars A blend of fiction and social realism.......2003-03-20

This book gives a solid sense of what it must have felt like to be a Jewish immigrant to New York around the turn of the century. I enjoyed the fact that the book was not only a very interesting adventure, but also a fascinating account of changing class consciousness and socialization to a new society. Kahan's account of what is gained and what is given up in this process allowed me to understand my own ancestors at a deeper level. He writes well in a journalistic style and is constantly providing details about his present that help me to understand the meaning of what was going on.
