I found this book to be a little different from the other ones I have read by Carson. She uses characters in a story setting that reflects actual natural history and animal behavior, making it an enjoyable read and not another dry marine biology book (pun not intended).
FRom Honolulu to Palmyra Atoll and Back in a Flicka Sloop[.......2000-03-31
What a treasure found! Luckily I purchased Under the Sea Wind, prior to sailing my small boat to an equally small atoll. This book gives the reader an appreciation and understanding of life around the sea. More importantly, it increased my situational awarenes to gleen some of the Ocean's less obvious life. Upon making landfall at Palmyra Atoll, I was more able to see the life occuring before me. This book would be of value to any cruising sailor, hiker, or motorhome wanderer. This book makes an excellent gift to the homebound and undermotivated friends. It is superbly written by one of the finest writers of this century and children love it's flowing pace of words. Perhaps the best advice is to read this fine work, next to that buy a copy for a friend.

Good book--could use photos, though.......2005-02-09
I checked this book out at the library and brought it with me to Aruba recently. I did not notice any inaccuracies in its information. A few photos (color or b/w) would make the book a tad more interesting. Otherwise, it's solid.
Slim Pickins on Aruba Books for Info.......2001-12-31
I've been to Aruba twice in 2 years, and it is REALLY difficult finding any type of a resource manual for the island, so I was happy when this one came out.
However, since it came out between my two visits, i was a bit disappointed with several inaccuracies in the book.
There is a wealth of good information in this book, but I would definitely not use it to choose accomodations, where I saw the largest amount of inaccuracies.
A person may feel a bit upset if they booked a resort based on this book, and found out for example that it did NOT have windsurfing as an inclusive. And a resort would be equally upset in knowing one of it's better attractions were not mentioned at all, and thus could possibly cause them a loss of a sale.
It had good descriptions of the beaches, and adequate descriptions of the restaurants. But, by all means find a second opinion regarding accomodations!
Hits the mark.......2001-08-09
You are going to Aruba. You want some reference material. Let's face it, your choices for books are limited. For the price, the book does what it promises. It provides a great overview of where to stay, where to eat, where to beach, where to gamble and what to do while you are on the island. And this thing is compact, it will easily fit in your back pocket. Four stars because I feel they are missing some of the better places to eat on the island (Madame Jeanette's, Flying Fishbone). Bon Bini!
Nothing new.......2001-05-03
I have read Fodor's books in the past and found them to be more informative than this book on Aruba. Not many travel books on Aruba exist so that's why I chose this one. However, it did not really contain any so-called "secrets" that I hadn't already found out from surfing on the internet.
There were some things that I liked about this book. It would probably be a good source if you are not an avid internet surfer (like myself who reads every website that I can find on Aruba). If you did not have any previous knowledge & wanted a short, quick book to just give the basics, then this book is probably for you. If you want a small guidebook to carry along on your trip (like I do) then it's worth the price.
But if you want a comprehensive guide with some "secrets", pass on this one.

Simple, Quaint, Fun.......2006-03-30
One of those things you look at, and think, "Hey, I coulda done that....". The drawings are simple (in a good way), quaint (in a good way). Any other drawings/calendars are interpretations. These are from the brain of the guy who invented Middle Earth; straight from the horse's (Inkling's) mouth, so to speak. Fun to have on the wall.
Tolkien as artist--he rocks!.......2006-02-17
This wonderful calendar highlights art that Tolkien drew for The Hobbit. The colors in this edition are bright and the pictures appropriate for framing. Tolkien's love of his subject and attention to detail are obvious in these colored pencil drawings, winsome renderings of scenes from Bilbo's adventures. It is fascinating to know how Tolkien thought his stories should look. Appropriate for any fan of Tolkien or any fan of author art.

It is absolutely fantastic to see Tolkien drawings in full colour in this calendar! Every Tolkien's Fan ought ot have it!
Tolkien's Own Vision.......2005-09-12
This calendar may strike those who are primarily familiar with Tolkien through the movies as somewhat plain and simple. But the real charm of these pictures and drawings illustrating The Hobbit is that they come from Tolkien's own pen and brush, and thus represent the author's true vision of Middle-earth.
Tolkien was a skilled artist, and his talents are well displayed here in these drawings and paintings. The best of these are Tolkien's own paintings. I am particularly fond of April's The Hill and December's Conversation With Smaug. Some of the illustrations were originally black and white drawings Tolkien produced for the book which have been colorized by H.E. Riddett. These have been reproduced many times since they were created in the 1970s. I have never been as fond of these colorized versions as I am of the black and white originals, since they seem to lack the true Tolkien spirit. Possibly that is because I am extremely familiar with the originals, and thus anything different strikes a false note. I do think the Riddett versions of the Misty Mountain landscape and the Elven-king's gate are quite nice.
All of these illustrations have been reproduced before in various calendars and in Christina Scull and Wayne Hammond's authoritative J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator. The short biography and book covers on the back page are identical to the 2005 calendar.
