1 out of 5 stars Not good........2007-06-27

Looking through books for ones to send to the thrift store, this one leapt to the fore. Each of the three times I've sat down to read it, I've soon set it aside, thinking 'life's too short to spend with books like this.' Rick Bass may be a great guy (some reviewers point out that he is), but this book is forced and soulless. Within my own experience with environmental nonfiction, "nature writing" as some will call it, I can think of nothing with which this book would compare well. Teale's 'Wandering Through Winter' is broader and more informative, more interesting because it is more interested; Abbey's 'Desert Solitaire' is more personally engaging; Thoreau's 'Walden', Leopold's 'Almanac' or 'Sketches', anything by Muir, Mowat, or Lopez -- more philosophical, more lyrical, more evocative, far better by any standard of measure.

Sorry to have to fasten the 'one star' rating here, Mr. Bass, but this book is nothing beyond mediocre.

5 out of 5 stars Rick's a cool guy.......2006-09-27

Having experienced the Yaak during winter, a few years in a row, I know what it's like... Kinda boring but very pretty. That was a few years ago, when I was a young teenager. I knew Rick and his family; I went to school with his daughters. In fact, his oldest daughter was one of my best friends. I remember one time I stayed over at their house with another one of our friends and we played hide-and-seek, and Rick was the seeker. It was a lot of fun. Anyway, I actually haven't read any of his books, I just wanted to say that Rick Bass is a great person, and if I could ever find his books in the local library, I'd read them, and definitely suggest them to other readers.

5 out of 5 stars I felt Snow through the author's words.......2006-03-18

I am Doug Hiser, author of The Honey Bee Girl, Wink-Eye Creek, Crow Canyon, and Secret Grotto. Rick Bass is an author who resides in his own genre. Winter is a fabulous book and I did not want it to end. Bass brought the world of Montana to me down here in Texas. Rick Bass is a master author with incredible description and odd yet powerful storytelling. The Watch was the first book I read by Bass and his short stories were intriguing and profound. He has been a tremendous influence on my own books. Winter-Notes from Montana is a book with a spellbinding story of survival and how a man changed his life by moving from Texas to a place without electricity and communication in the snowy mountainous region of Montana called the Yaak. He writes there on a typewriter by lantern light. He describes his metamorphosis from a Texas writer to a true mountain man learning to survive the intensely cold winters of the wilds of Montana. Bass describes many encounters with nature, moose, elk, bear, and others and fills the chapters with the wonderful characters that live in near seclusion in this place. Rick Bass presents an alternative lifestyle of survival and conservation, toughness of the human spirit and a grand love of nature as he actually lived the story of his book. A beautiful read and you will cherish the images and words of the writer Rick Bass.

4 out of 5 stars Cleanse Yourself in Winter.......2004-06-23

Rick Bass is one of my favorite writers and in my opinion deserves much more attention.

This book is a memoir of his first years in Yaak, Montana with his wife Elizabeth. They move from the city to a small cabin in the Montana wilderness. It is a beautifully written tribute to a world no longer in demand where the sound of silence feels too loud. Bass finds out just how little he actually knows, a marvelous experience in humility, once he encounters the harshness of winter. He writes about snow being strong and silent in the same breath. He discovers a new life where he only needs bare essentials to survive and soon finds that all other existence seems superficial. He writes in a style like no other man I have ever read almost poetic but not overdone, and like Walden, he suggests that tremendous value exists in the wilderness away from a roaring crowd.

If you love nature and the idea of healing such as that found in solitude this book is for you. Bass writes so wonderfully that your senses are taken along with him on his various wilderness excursions for life's rations. My favorite passage is on page 81, on which he describes a lone male moose, "He broke into the smoothest of gallops, a lazy, long legged floating. His wide antlers could have held a tea service without spilling a drop, so smooth and level was his gait." How many men do you know who would think of a tea service and not a loaded gun upon seeing a magnificent male moose? This is where I find Rick Bass so appealing; in all his male machismo he finds the subtle intricacies of art in nature and has the ability to describe it all magically.

5 out of 5 stars Winter...It takes Me Back..........2004-03-18

"Winter"...It takes me back...
Spent half a year (winter) taking care of one of the wonderful characters pictured in prose so well in this book.
Was hard not at all to close my eyes and find me back at The
Dirty Shame doing my laundry and talking with Donna and Rick
while feeding quarters into the poker machines.
This book makes it so easy to remember the beautiful scenery,
the deer who outnumbered us humans X100,the birds and just the
very excitement in getting up each morning...the very smell of the fresh air with a slight hint of woodsmoke.
For anyone just looking for a Good Book...a nice easy read that can prompt your mind to return to your own personnal unique world... "Winter" will take you back there...
I believe everyone has their own" personal place" and I thank Mr Bass for sharing the Yaak and hope it helps others return
to theirs.

The title of this book could not be more explicit or apt. With 40 actual wood specimens in popular use, descriptions of grain, color and texture, how to identify trees by their leaves, fruit, and bark, and much more, this is a small encyclopedia for woodworkers, carpenters, hobbyists, dealers, architects, craftsmen, nature lovers, teachers, or anyone with the urge to learn about wood. With small, aromatic samples of 40 varieties of wood, from afrormosia to zebrawood, this book even smells good! --Mark Hetts

          Book Description

Strong, pliable, and natural, wood is the world's most versatile structural resource. But how to tell one kind from another and choose just the right wood for your project? This remarkable collection of forty actual wood samples shows the color, grain, and texture of the leading varieties. Detailed drawings identify uncut, unfinished trees by their leaves, fruits, and bark. Originally published in 1969, and now in its eighth printing, this straightforward text explains where each kind of tree is grown and how to use its wood to the best advantage--from lamination to veneering, from carving and molding, to finishing. Here, too, is the history of man's use of wood from the Stone Age ax to modern-day conservation issues and rare rain-forest species. What Wood Is That? is an invaluable resource for builders, homeowners, and hobbyists--and a fascinating companion for forest guides and nature lovers.

4 out of 5 stars Focus on foreign...what about domestic?.......2007-04-04

This book is very handy when identifying and working with foreign wood, but for domestic wood identification try the United State's Department of Agriculture's "The Encyclopedia of Wood." It's extremely in-depth and informative.

          5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-01-05

Gift for my husband. He just loves it. Very informative and helpful.

1 out of 5 stars Focus On European Not USA Species.......2000-12-04

This book is of little value for the woodworker trying to identify woods commonly used on the American continent. When the species are described (with wood samples provided) the European varieties are given to the exclusion of woods from this continent. Species vary enough from the Euopean continent to make the book of very little use in identifying American woods and can even be misleading. The grain pattern on Birch is a classic example and Birch is used a great deal on funiture.

The book is very badly outdated and lists uses for various woods not seen since the late fifties and early sixties.

Consider carefully before purchasing this book.

4 out of 5 stars Quiet and straightforward.......2000-10-27

This is a very friendly and straightforward book. It starts with veneer samples (quite small, but big enough) of 40 woods and finishes with descriptions of the trees that yield these 40 woods.

In between there is quite a bit of useful information on wood, and the history of woodworking. A pretty good introduction to wood for and woodworking. This book will be only modestly useful in identification, since it is limited to naked eye observations of those 40 woods.

I browsed through the 1969 edition and it clearly is from another era (with the chainsaw just being introduced!). I can well imagine that those who equate woodworking with roaring high speed machines may find this quiet book not to their liking.

5 out of 5 stars Great samples. Great book........1999-05-15

If your working on a project involving exotic woods, then this book should be added to your library. The REAL wood samples are great. The book also has very useful information about many types of wood. I find this book to be a handy reference tool and am glad to have added it to my collection.

                            From the Library Journal, Vol. 126, No. 8, p. 117, 1 May 2001:
These guides do not lead tourists to the most popular bars or shopping districts but instead to the various Christian heritage sites in each country ... Each guide follows the same layout: Hexham begins with an overview of the history of each country from prehistoric times to the present. He then includes a chapter on literature, art, and architecture and lists what he considers the top ten Christian heritage sites in each country. Each entry thereafter is in alphabetical order ... Recommended for all public libraries.

                                Book Description

The so-called science wars pit science against culture, and nowhere is the struggle more contentious--or more fraught with paradox--than in the burgeoning realm of genetics. A constructive response, and a welcome intervention, this volume brings together biological and cultural anthropologists to conduct an interdisciplinary dialogue that provokes and instructs even as it bridges the science/culture divide.
Individual essays address issues raised by the science, politics, and history of race, evolution, and identity; genetically modified organisms and genetic diseases; gene work and ethics; and the boundary between humans and animals. The result is an entree to the complicated nexus of questions prompted by the power and importance of genetics and genetic thinking, and the dynamic connections linking culture, biology, nature, and technoscience. The volume offers critical perspectives on science and culture, with contributions that span disciplinary divisions and arguments grounded in both biological perspectives and cultural analysis. An invaluable resource and a provocative introduction to new research and thinking on the uses and study of genetics, Genetic Nature/Culture is a model of fruitful dialogue, presenting the quandaries faced by scholars on both sides of the two-cultures debate.

                                  Book Description

The third edition of this highly acclaimed undergraduate textbook is suitable for teaching all the mathematics for an undergraduate course in any of the physical sciences. As well as lucid descriptions of all the topics and many worked examples, it contains over 800 exercises. New stand-alone chapters give a systematic account of the 'special functions' of physical science, cover an extended range of practical applications of complex variables, and give an introduction to quantum operators. Further tabulations, of relevance in statistics and numerical integration, have been added. In this edition, half of the exercises are provided with hints and answers and, in a separate manual available to both students and their teachers, complete worked solutions. The remaining exercises have no hints, answers or worked solutions and can be used for unaided homework; full solutions are available to instructors on a password-protected web site, www.cambridge.org/9780521679718.

5 out of 5 stars Just one comment, this is a great book........2007-05-30

This is one of the best mathematical methods book, very readable.
It has very clear explainations, in each topic it's developing from basic intuitions until it reaches the genralized equations, several detailed examples help a reader checks his understanding and follows the authors.

The contents are very well-organized and self-contained, one can looks directly at the topic he wants to know. It's lucid and normally answer and teach a reader what he wants to do. All definitions make sense and a reader can accepts easily it's a smart thing to do math that way.

It also serves as a one-stop, if you feel confused when you're reading because your background knowledge is not strong enough, just search for the previous related topics, all brilliant explainations are waiting for you to grasp them, make you ready for what you need.

Any undergrads and beginning grad students in Physics will find this book is great. This is an excellent example how to write an approachable math methods book. Eventhough it has a thick over than 1,300 pages, but it never turns a reader away becuase of its thickness at all. Once one starts reading it, he'll enjoy and come back looking for another explaination.

One more great point is, this book contains a lot of real physical examples besides the math formulations, make a reader understands the topic deeply and sees a practical use.

Besides the book, I totally don't agree with a previous comment from a chemical physicist who gave this book just one star.

1 out of 5 stars There are much better options........2007-04-24

This book is only good for someone who is very experienced in these areas of mathematics it discusses. It is not whatsoever for a student who wants to learn these things for the first time. It should be avoided at all costs to someone who does not already know how to do these mathematical operations. If you want to learn techniques of math for science, read Mary Boas's book (excellent) or Glen Fletcher.

If you are looking for an in depth analysis of these subjects after a course in mathematical methods and comfort in mathematics of physics undergraduate, then this book is comprehensive and good reference book. I still, however, find the book very lacking and regret buying it overall.

The new edition of this highly acclaimed textbook contains several major additions, including more than four hundred new exercises (with hints and answers). To match the mathematical preparation of current senior college and university entrants, the authors have included a preliminary chapter covering areas such as polynomial equations, trigonometric identities, coordinate geometry, partial fractions, binomial expansions, induction, and the proof of necessary and sufficient conditions. Elsewhere, matrix decompositions, nearly-singular matrices and non-square sets of linear equations are treated in detail. The presentation of probability has been reorganised and greatly extended, and includes all physically important distributions. New topics covered in a separate statistics chapter include estimator efficiency, distributions of samples, t- and F-tests for comparing means and variances, applications of the chi-squared distribution, and maximum likelihood and least-squares fitting. In other chapters the following topics have been added: linear recurrence relations, curvature, envelopes, curve-sketching, and more refined numerical methods.

If you are a mathematics major interested in rigorous proofs and theorems then DO NOT buy this book. If you are an engineering or physics student and are mostly concerned with learning to solve problems encountered in class then this is THE book for you. From eigenvalues to tensors, from differential equations to probability, this book has the essential information and many worked examples demonstrating the mathematical applications seen in most undergrad and graduate level engineering and physics courses. Few advanced engineering math texts cover the breadth of topics that this one does. The mix of hints and solutions at the end of the chapters is a helpful touch.

I've bought this book to learn the mathematics I need for physics. I'm a high school student (currently, but I plan to study physics). I'm interested in physics and learn it on my own. This book has help understand (and solve) mathematics needed for physics. I used it to learn mathematics, now I use it for reference. A great book.

This is NOT a mathematical book. It looks like a bad's students cheat-sheet. I don't know how they can learn math in England from this? Especially, when their undergraduate studies are only 3 years (actually, 3 x 8months < 3years). Conclusion: do not study in England.

As a physicist I'm constantly scrambling to my bookcases to look something up. This text sits at the top of my shelves and is used more often than any other. I give it 5 stars as a reference text, however I cannot really rate it as a 'learning' mathematical methods text (maybe 3 stars?) since most of the methods are familiar to me.

The sequel to Thomas Wolfe's remarkable first novel, Look Homeward, Angel, Of Time and the River is one of the great classics of American literature. The book chronicles the maturing of Wolfe's autobiographical character, Eugene Gant, in his desperate search for fulfillment, making his way from small-town North Carolina to the wider world of Harvard University, New York City, and Europe. In a massive, ambitious, and boldly passionate novel, Wolfe examines the passing of time and the nature of the creative process, as Gant slowly but ecstatically embraces the urban life, recognizing it as a necessary ordeal for the birth of his creative genius as a writer.

The work of an exceptionally expressive writer of fertile imagination and startling emotional intensity, Of Time and the River illuminates universal truths about art and life, city and country, past and present. It is a novel that is majestic and enduring. As P. M. Jack observed in The New York Times, "It is a triumphant demonstration that Thomas Wolfe has the stamina to produce a magnificent epic of American life."

This edition, published in celebration of Wolfe's centennial anniversary, contains a new introduction by Pat Conroy.

5 out of 5 stars Of Time and the River.......2006-01-23

Reading the prequel, Look Homeward, Angel, evokes in the reader (if the reader was ever a boy) crystalline images of their youth. This presumes that one grew up in the 50's and 60's before small cities, such as Asheville, moved to the suburbs. I found Of Time and the River, to lack the imagery that I found so appealing in Look Homeward. Perhaps it is that I do not feel the distance from my 20's that I feel from being 11 or 12. Still, I commend the book.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Writting - Just a little long at points.......2005-11-01

There is no doubt that Mr. Wolfe was a brilliant writer. More than once I found myself saying "Yes, I know exactly how you feel!" I suspect I am not alone in this regard. The biggest drawback, and the reason I only assign four starts, is the sensation that I am mining for greatness. What do I mean?

There were some long stretches throughout the book that I found tedious. My advice is to plough ahead for I assure you the sections that speak to the reader are that good. Wolfe's death at a young age was loss for us all.

4 out of 5 stars Dense but Entertaining.......2003-12-23

I kept waiting for Wolfe to share with us what would make Eugene the writer he was waiting to be - where would he find the courage to not only fail (or fail again) but to believe in himself and know that he could write after reading the thousands of books he gorged himself on.

And then as the book winds down, it happens, he falls in love. And in a few paragraphs, we learn that the momentual problems of the past were wiped away. He finds his courage and the book ends abruptly. Perhaps a little more editing earlier would have led Wolfe to write more about this episode.

I enjoyed the novel though not as much as the prequel.

5 out of 5 stars of time and the river.......2002-12-09

It was early 1980 when I first read "Look Homeward.." for a University of Colorado course. The professor who seemed to be a hundred years old to me at the time instructed me to read my critical report to the entire class. After smugly concluding Wolfe was lacking in many areas the professor graded my paper an "A"...then she patted my young shoulders and told me that one day I'd be old enough to understand Wolfe. She was right and my criticicm was dead wrong. Wolfes' wordiness is his beauty. The scene in "Of Time And The River" where his father dies is as beautiful and compelling as anything I've read. I think the book is unique and those who are critical of it may need to read it again -when they are a little older.

                                    3 out of 5 stars A failling-off from Look Homeward Angel.......2001-09-04

Those who enjoyed Look Homeward Angel will find this novel somewhat disappointing. Continuing Eugene Gant's story with his trip to Harvard, and life in New York, the book lacks the vivid characters of the earlier novel. While the book contains some wonderful, Whitman-like passages, the only real character is Eugene Gant; everyone else seems to exist only to show how brillant Gant (Wolfe) is. Moreover, some of the book seems to border on anti-semitism. Nevertheless, anyone interested in Wolfe will want to read this book.
