Book Description

After a long absence from his native southern Appalachians, Thomas Rain Crowe returned to live alone deep in the North Carolina woods. This is Crowe's chronicle of that time when, for four years, he survived by his own hand without electricity, plumbing, modern-day transportation, or regular income. It is a Walden for today, paced to nature's rhythms and cycles and filled with a wisdom one gains only through the pursuit of a consciously simple, spiritual, environmentally responsible life.

Crowe made his home in a small cabin he had helped to build years before-at a restless age when he could not have imagined that the place would one day call him back. The cabin sat on what was once the farm of an old mountain man named Zoro Guice. As we absorb Crowe's sharp observations on southern Appalachian natural history, we also come to know Zoro and the other singular folk who showed Crowe the mountain ways that would see him through those four years.

Crowe writes of many things: digging a root cellar, being a good listener, gathering wood, living in the moment, tending a mountain garden. He explores profound questions on wilderness, self-sufficiency, urban growth, and ecological overload. Yet we are never burdened by their weight but rather enriched by his thoughtfulness and delighted by his storytelling.

5 out of 5 stars Not so much a "Getting away from" as a "Going back to".......2005-10-03

Written accounts of solitary wilderness living show up every once in a while, and seem to have become especially popular after the Baby Boomers "discovered" Thoreau in the 1960s. His words still inspire a few folks to chuck their lives of quiet desperation and head for the hills to get away from it all. Some are successful, some are not. Many stay there only a year or two before the most pressing need -- the financial one -- forces them to return to civilization.

That's not the case with Thomas Rain Crowe, who spent four years (1978-1982) living alone in a cabin in the Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina. Crowe went back to his home state after living in a variety of places, doing a variety of work, communing with a variety of people. When given the opportunity to be the cabin tenant, he made the most of it. He worked hard to be self-sufficient, growing his own food and tending to his home and his tools. Others might have been bored in such a setting, but not him. He was always busy: gardening, fishing, taking care of his beehives, making homebrew, digging his root cellar, taking notes on the experience. And he regained the use of one his most valuable resources, the Southern Mountain speech of his childhood. He was downright satisfied with the situation.

His mentors in this effort were several local men who offered advice from time to time: Zoro Guice appeared in Yoda-like fashion whenever Crowe needed to learn how to perform a certain task. Walt Johnson was the scamp of the neighborhood, but was also an accomplished dowser who could find water every time. From these and other natives Crowe learned how to live close to the land, to live in the time of the seasons. The reader senses that Crowe would be living there still, if civilization hadn't encroached upon the property and changed it forever. That's when he knew he had to leave.

Not just a doer, Crowe is also a viewer -- a writer, a poet, a spiritual man who feels a strong connection to the natural world. His poetry uses simple words and turns of phrase to evoke powerful images. On the other hand, his prose, the narrative of his story, is the work of a learned and literate man. Complex constructs entice the reader to keep on going, to chew on the concepts and experiences offered. It takes time to digest these lines, and it's time well spent. Having witnessed Thomas Rain Crowe read some of this book aloud in person, I have the benefit of having heard the hint of the Smokies in his voice, the love for the place evident in every well-spoken syllable. No matter; it comes through in the typewritten text as well.

So was Thomas Wolfe right or wrong? Can you or can't you go home again? The reader decides. In the meantime, "Zoro's Field" should be placed on a shelf with the works of the old and new naturalists (Thoreau, Burroughs, Leopold, Carson, Eiseley, Bass) to one side, and the "Foxfire" books to the other. A thought-provoking addition to the environmental canon.

5 out of 5 stars living with nature in Appalachian region.......2005-05-30

The local legend and mountain sage of the Appalachians of western North Carolina Zoro Guice told the author, "If a man goes out in the woods and just sits down in one place for long enough, all of nature and everything he needs to know will eventually pass before him like a parade." And so Crowe--poet, publisher, and recording artist--took up residence in the Appalachians for four years, and writes about the "parade." As in Thoreau's "Walden," Crowe writes about how he subsisted in the wild and what he learned from this. But moving somewhat beyond "Walden" in content and form, Crowe writes more about what goes on beyond himself; and some passages are in the form of verse. Not so meticulous or contained as "Walden," "Zoro's Field" reflects on modernity's effects on the tie with nature, environmental concerns, and changes which have come to the area. Though different in ways from Thoreau's classic which it cannot help but be compared with, Crowe's work in this same genre holds its own as an engaging, thought-inducing memoir.

5 out of 5 stars Native.......2005-05-25

More than a modern Walden, this is a book about intentional living. Crowe returns to home land in the southern mountains of North Carolina after living in Europe and northern California. Guided by principles of the Beat poets and philosophers, he embraces the traditions of sustenance, growing his own food, tending bees (honey for trade), making wine and beer. From his cabin beside the Green River gorge, he explores both terrain and history in celebration of a way of life that has been largely lost. The book is elegant and poetic. Crowe writes with an easy style, but critical intellect.

I'm ordering a second copy to give to my fellow canoers who head for the boundary waters canoe area wilderness. We travel with up to date equipment and maps. The fellows in this book "winged" it with what was then state-of-the-art gear. This book is a great contrast between wilderness canoe travel from this century to the last century.
The account is truly chilling at times. You are tempted to exclaim "these guys must have been nuts!!" But their journey was truly an adventure. Few of us would have the stones to attempt this today.
If you do any form of wilderness trekking or canoeing, you will really like this book.

Of course I knew it was somewhere in the north-eastern part of the continent; but so many years had passed since I laid away my old school geography that its exact situation had escaped my memory, and the only other knowledge I had retained of the country was a confused sense of its being a sort of Arctic wilderness. Hubbard proceeded to enlighten me, by tracing with his pencil, on the fly- leaf of his notebook, an outline map of the peninsula.

In the late spring of 1903 Leonidas Hubbard, an ambitious young writer, Dillon Wallace, a forty-year-old New York attorney, and George Elson, an Indian guide with no firsthand knowledge of their destination, set out on an adventure. Beset by delays, the men paddle past their intended route. When in early September they finally glimpse the vast waters of Michikamau from atop an unknown mountain, the cold winds have already begun. With almost no food left, the three begin a desperate struggle against starvation and the quickening pace of a cruel winter, heading homeward in a race for their lives.

I have read this book several times, and would recomend it to anyone that enjoys an adventure story. I enjoy it even more than most as Leonidas Hubbard was my grandfathers first cousin. This book has been almost required reading in our family,(Hubbard).I hope the publisher will reprint it as we have many family members looking for a copy of the book.

I have read a lot of teen adventure books. I recently read this one while I was on a rugged boys canoe camp trip. We went on a 7 week trip with 12 men to labrador. I purchased this book because it was nonfiction and it was saying how these 3 brave, adventurous men took a trip similar to the area i'll be going to. It talked about how mothernature just (threre's really no word for it but...)Destroys these people and they fight back with courage and hope in succeeding this raw adventure. The three in progress of there adventure take care of eachother and keep eachother alive nad in this doing they become better than great friends almost brothers. I really don't want to ruin the book for you, but i suggest so strongly that you get a copy of this book, and oh yea the beginning of the book really is boring because it tells you of how they got to labrador in 1902 (they didn't have cars).

5 out of 5 stars Thank God the author lived and his book is being reprinted!.......1998-09-16

I cannot say enough about the content and the form of this book. It beautifully informs the reader not only of the enthusiasm of two would-be wilderness pioneers, but also of the errors they did not know they had made along the way to a tragic end. I get the feeling that the author, who wrote the book (according to the introduction) as a tribute to his lost mate, never overlooks or overplays any of the events that took place in the then-unchartered terrain of eastern Laborador. The author also makes plain that the voyage ended his youthful naivete by teaching him the necessity of respecting the natural world and of remembering our loves who slowly but surely disappear from our lives.

In short, Lure Of the Laborador Wild, despite its drab title, is an engrossing work. It is quiet, clearly written and, in a matter-of-fact way, terrifying. It towers far above all other nonfiction adventure books I have read over the past ten years.

4 out of 5 stars A true story of courage and friendship.......1996-07-09

Poorly prepared, two friends, and their half-indian manservant "George", decide to travel deep in to the interior of Labrador. The hardship they endure and the hard choices they make are a testimony to the resilience of the human spirit. This book gives great insight into what life was like in eastern Canada at the turn of this century.

                                Book Description

Based on a comprehensive review of human and societal evolution the book develops an approach to conscious, self-guided evolution.
In the course of the evolutionary journey of our species, there have been three seminal events. The first happened some seven million yeas ago, when our humanoid ancestors entered on the evolutionary scene. Their journey toward the second crucial event lasted over six million years when - as the greatest event of our evolutionary history - homo sapiens sapiens, started the revolutionary process of cultural evolution. Today, we have arrived at the threshold of the third major event, `the revolution of conscious evolution,' when it becomes our responsibility to enter into the evolutionary design space and guide the evolutionary journey of our species.
The book tells the story of the first six million years of the journey in just enough detail to understand how evolution had worked in times when it was primarily biological, driven by natural selection. With the human revolution some fifty thousand years ago, with the emergence of self-reflective consciousness, the evolutionary process transformed from biological into cultural. From this point on, the book follows the journey with detailed attention, in order to learn how cultural evolution works. The book is organized in three parts. Part One commences with an exposition of a brief history of the evolutionary idea through time with a focus on a review of the science of general evolution and specifically social and societal evolution. Next, the book unfolds the `evolutionary story' of our species from the time when the first humanoids entered the evolutionary scene to our current era. Part Two develops a systems view of evolution, explores the ways and means of how evolution works, characterizes evolutionary consciousness and develops the idea of conscious evolution. Part Three builds upon the knowledge developed in the first two parts and sets forth the key conditions of conscious, self-guided evolution, elaborating the core condition, which is the acquisition of evolutionary competence through evolutionary learning. The focus of this part is on an approach to the design of evolutionary guidance systems that our families, neighborhoods, communities, organizations, social and societal systems can use to design the future they aspire to attain.
The work is set aside from other statements in three important ways. It provides: (1) a comprehensive review of how evolution has worked with a focus on socio-cultural evolution, (2) an explanation of evolutionary consciousness and the conditions of engaging in conscious evolution, and (3) most significantly, it develops a detailed approach and a methodology to the design of evolutionary guidance systems.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the only real design guide for cultural evolution.......2001-05-22

Dr. Banathy has written what is probably the only work in existence on an evolutionary epistemology. He contends that humanity needs to take charge of its own cultural evolution, and to do that requires co-creative design of our future. His book provides powerful tools for accomplishing this.

The first part of the book takes the reader through the human evolution from a systems perspective. The latter half focuses on the methods for engaging in collective, participative design creating an evolutionary guidance system that can carry us forward. This work builds on Dr. Banathy's classic previous work on social systems design, "Designing Social Systems in a Changing World."

In the latter half of the book, the reader is taken through the design process of creating an evolutionary guidance system. This process begins with the establishment of common ground and continues through the determination of the functions and components of systems that can learn and grow toward and ideal future. The book talks about both the process and dynamics of design, highlighting that social systems design is both an iterative and a complex process of movement forward and recursive revision to what has been done. We cannot know the end state, but we can move toward our best vision of it.

The unique and intriguing aspect of Dr. Banathy's work in general, and this work in particular, is the emphasis on the process of social systems design. No prescribed future is proposed; rather, Dr. Banathy seeks to provide the methodological tools for humanity to create a better future. In this sense, the work does not try to advocate any other values than that people must take charge of their future and that everyone should be involved in the design of the social systems in which they will inhabit. It is thus, in a sense, a work about how to be a responsible citizen in the modern age.

It is a book about democracy, but not about government. Rather it is a book about focused, meaningful, and productive public dialogue, both generative and strategic. As a metaphor, Dr. Banathy reminds us of the citizen democracies of ancient Greece, where public issues could be debated in full view.

This book is an essential manual for people who are serious about social change, because the book talks about how to engage a large system in meaningful dialogue. And it is only through meaningful dialogue that the system will be change. Despite the plethora of proposals about what our future should be, it is impossible to sit back and determine it from an armchair. Rather, as Dr. Banathy describes, we must engage together and let that future emerge through our genuine, focused, and open dialogue.

                                        Book Description

The six-volume CRC Handbook of Ion Exchange Resins reviews the application of ion exchange resins to inorganic analytical chemistry. Extracted from over 6,000 original publications, it presents the information in over 1,000 tables complemented by concise descriptions of analytical methods involving virtually all the elements of the periodic table. Also, the ion exchange characteristics of the elements, as well as other important information required by analysis using ion exchange resins, are presented in separate tables. The methods that allow the multi-element analysis of complex matrices are emphasized. This work includes a general discussion of the theoretical, instrumental, and other principles underlying the various applications of ion exchange resins in inorganic analytical chemistry with special attention focused on techniques based on ion chromatography.

                                          Book Description

Shape interrogation is the process of extraction of information from a geometric model. It is a fundamental component of Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems. The authors focus on shape interrogation of geometric models bounded by free-form surfaces. Free-form surfaces, also called sculptured surfaces, are widely used in the bodies of ships, automobiles and aircraft, which have both functionality and attractive shape requirements. Many electronic devices as well as consumer products are designed with aesthetic shapes, which involve free-form surfaces. This book provides the mathematical fundamentals as well as algorithms for various shape interrogation methods including nonlinear polynomial solvers, intersection problems, differential geometry of intersection curves, distance functions, curve and surface interrogation, umbilics and lines of curvature, geodesics, and offset curves and surfaces. This book will be of interest both to graduate students and professionals.

                                          5 out of 5 stars A powerful tool for CAD/CAM research & development.......2002-10-15

Many excellent books analyze models/methods to represent curves and surfaces in Computer-Aided Design &
Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems, but this is the first one focusing on solving some very complex geometric
modeling problems underlying many engineering applications. The authors identify these bottleneck problems,
analyze them in detail, and present state-of-the-art solution algorithms. These important problems are:

"Intersection problems" (Chapters 5 and 6), "Distance calculations" (Chapter 7),
"Curve/Surface Interrogation" (Chapters 8 and 9), "Computation of Shortest Paths" (Chapter 10), and
"Offset Curves and Surfaces" (Chapter 11).

In each one of the above chapters, the corresponding problem is fully analyzed using tools from advanced
Geometric Modeling, Numerical Methods and Differential Geometry, some of which are new results previously
available only in research journals. The authors have done an excellent job in collecting all these results in
a single volume, offering an invaluable tool to CAD/CAM professionals who do not have the time to study
and analyze themselves all this literature.

The solutions proposed go beyond standard tricks and heuristics: the problems are formulated as systems
of nonlinear equations and reliable solution-algorithms are offered based either on standard methods or
on fresh research. Robustness issues (accuracy, treatment of special cases, singularities, etc) are at the center
of discussion guiding the reader on dealing with the most difficult aspects of geometric-software development.

In short, this book is a powerful tool for CAD/CAM professionals (software architects/developers,
consultants, engineers/users, academic teachers and researchers, etc) as:
                                          1) Very useful results are analyzed, that alternatively are available only in advanced mathematical texts and current research publications.
                                          2) Problems are discussed in detail using theoretical results as well as examples.
                                          3) Robust solution methods are presented, based on a solid mathematical analysis as opposed to heuristics.
                                          4) All prerequisites are fully analyzed in the first 4 chapters, making the volume self-contained.

                                            Book Description

What was ‘comic’ about Aristophanes’ comedies? For those approaching Aristophanes without a knowledge of Greek, Sir Kenneth Dover’s companion to "Clouds" and Simon Tremmewan’s to "Acharnians" and "Lysistrata" provide an insight into the characteristically Greek elements of comedy which can be lost when reading in translation. They also address the serious issues and criticisms which Aristophanes presents all the more effectively through comedy, and give interesting notes on the treatment which the translation gives to the original Greek.
