5 out of 5 stars A Shaker Sisterês vision on plants.......2000-12-28

Maybe the Shakerês visions of the "spiritual world" shaped Sister Sarleês perception of the "natural world" and therefore influenced her nice, simple, stylized drawings. On stressing the straight stalks and the symmetry of every plant she captures the essence of each species. I like the a little bit naive-looking illustrations very much because of their honesty and purity. The plants are well-arranged on every page, with a certain economy of layout, which fits into the Shaker-philosophy. I think in some way Sister Helenaês spirit lives on in these prettily-drawn illustrations that can please both- flower lovers and botanists.

With stunning illustrations from the Royal Horticultural Society's Lindley Library collection and concise text by Royal Horticultural Society archivist Dr. Brent Elliott, Flora tell the fascinating story of the worldwide botanical exploration undertaken over the past 500 years.

Founded in 1804, the RHS led the way in sending collectors around the world in search of new floral species, fostering the domestic cultivation of the garden flowers we know and love today. In the process the RHS has built an unrivaled collection of stunning artworks and rare books covering five centuries of plant history. The Society's Lindley Library is one of the world's finest horticulture archives, containing more than 250,000 paintings, illustrations and rare books.

The illustrations in Flora, many by the great names in botanical art, are notable not only for their historical value in charting the development of garden flowers, but also for their indisputable beauty and artistic merit. Flora is divided into six geographical sections: Europe; Middle East; Southern & Tropical Africa; Australasia & The Pacific; The Americas; and Asia. Biographies of the botanists and artists are also included.

The history of botanical illustration is long and broad. Today, the art is undergoing a renaissance: botanical illustrations are found on everything from greeting cards to wallpaper to expensive original artworks. This spectacular collection of Royal Horticultural Society illustrations will capture the attention of gardeners and art lovers alike.

    1 out of 5 stars SMALL size.......2006-05-04

I ordered this book and returned it due to the extremely ridiculous small size. It is about the size of a CD. I had read this book in the library at the full size and the small size ("Compact edition") doesn't even compare. If you really want this book, get the full size. Otherwise it isn't worth it.

    2 out of 5 stars book SIZE.......2005-03-18

My order just came and was I disappointed. The book is beautiful yet the size is absurd. Measures 5 3/8 by 6 1/4 inches. This is not stated anywhere in the book desription. I just assumed it would be the standard 8 1/2 by 11 inches. I KNEW it wasn't the coffee table size but this size is just not suitable for this type of book. I will be returning it.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Fabulous Book of Flowers!.......2002-07-16

This is one of the best flower books I have ever seen! Richly illustrated, with many details, and glorious color! I am a painter, so these are very important for an illustrated book. A must have for all flower lovers!

    5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2002-04-26

This book is beauty and knowledge. An absolut treasure!

5 out of 5 stars A simply gorgeous floral art presentation........2002-03-23

Flora straddles the line between being an art book filled with flora pictures and a gardening title packed with details about garden flowers. Both audiences will welcome this lavish presentation but it's the artist who will have a rare opportunity to appreciate the detail and color of floral designs. Full-color, oversized pages of floral art are gorgeous presentations.

    Book Description

Some of the most ravishing images in the history of illustration have been those of plants. But who drew plants, and why? How have these images reflected our changing relationship with the natural world? This beautifully illustrated book explores the purpose and function of the whole range of botanical art, from early woodcut herbals and painted florilegia, botanical treatises and records of new discoveries, to gardening manuals, seed catalogs, and field guides for the amateur enthusiast. Gill Saunders complements the sumptuous illustrations with detailed captions and an informative text, making this a book for both specialist and lay reader.
Drawing on a rich archive of material in the Victoria and Albert Museum, much of it unpublished until now, Saunders presents works ranging from the fifteenth-century printed book to the art of contemporary illustrators. She includes acknowledged masters such as Ehret and Redouté as well as lesser-known examples from China, Japan, and India.
In addition to their intrinsic beauty, plant illustrations have mirrored the curious and fascinating relationship between art and science. The artist's challenge has been to reconcile the often conflicting demands of those disciplines within a single image. Picturing Plants captures both this complex cultural history and the distinctive loveliness of botanical illustration, bringing a fresh approach to a perennially fascinating subject.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty pictures with idiotic PC commentary.......2006-12-09

At the simplest level, 'Picturing Plants' can be enjoyed simply as a pretty book, with 100 illustrations (many in excellent color) from the Victoria and Albert Museum, where Saunders is a curator.
Saunders covers 500 years of botanical illustration, and her incisive comments would help sharpen any connoisseur's eye.
Probing a level deeper, there is the evolution of intent, as well as of method. Early book illustrations were woodcuts, unsuited to capturing the delicate organs of plants.
But at first there was no need to depict them. The herbals of the 16th century tended to ignore blossoms in favor of roots, because plants were valued for their medicinal properties. Today, of course, flowers are everything.
The brief text of 'Picturing Plants' is full of substance, including at least a few references to Asian modes of illustrating plants, for comparison to western European practices. But Saunders' text still hangs in midair, without support at either end.
It is true that she is a curator of drawn illustrations, but in an analytical survey, however brief, one would have expected at least a mention of attempts to depict plants in other media. Before the printed book there were stone illustrations -- the leaves of Southwell Abbey, for example -- and just before the perfection of color photography there were the glass flowers that are the most popular attraction at Harvard's Agassiz Hall.
Saunders' theme is that depictions of plants, even by color photography, always are based on compromises. The compromises, in turn, are influenced by cultural conventions. 'The objective reality is always enveloped by local and national differences in perception, and in the graphic conventions and techniques available.'
It's indisputable, but Saunders' relentless pursuit of political correctness twists that thought into some odd shapes. Anyone not inclined to worship at the altar of anticolonialism will find this book constantly irritating.
Thus, in commenting on Chinese and Japanese plant illustrations done for Europeans, she charges that 'by imposing Western pictorial conventions such as perspective, the West colonized native perceptions of the flora, and effectively devalued "other" ways of seeing and representing what was seen.'
This can be demonstrated to be wrong in every respect. For one thing, there are the actual plants to look at. For another, I can walk into Shirokiya (or could until it went broke) and buy any amount of Japanese goods illustrated with plant motifs that owe nothing to western ideas.
And it's possible that mathematical perspective had an intrinsic appeal to craftsmen who had not thought of it themselves, and was adopted not merely by compulsion.
But if you assume that western imperialism was irresistible even in such a minor corner as picturing plants, the logic of your ideology results in even stranger results.
A sad example refers to my backyard, where Saunders assumes that the great collector Joseph Banks acquired his specimens (of cultural and botanical things) as 'booty.'
This contradicts the facts of how they were acquired, and also devalues the shrewdness of the 'others,' who bargained and, I would assert even if Saunders can't, made satisfactory trades. If they thought a wife was worth a nail, it is only triumphalist Eurocentrism to say they were wrong to do so.
It is also hilarious to see Saunders refer to Mughal painting as 'native' to India.
Still, as long as Saunders sticks to the subject at hand, 'Picturing Plants' well repays time spent. Like a seed, this book encompasses a lot of information in a little space.

              Description:
Natural hybridization between plant species often occurs in disturbed habitats and it is generally considered a threat for rare and endangered species. A different situation occurs in Mediterranean food deceptive orchids, where hybridization is a common phenomenon, as a natural consequence of their unspecific pollination system. Here, we present molecular and ecological evidence from a hybrid zone between Orchis mascula and O. pauciflora in order to address the consequences of hybridization on local orchid evolution and to assess conservation priorities for hybrids and hybrid zones in orchid conservation programs. We find that, although hybrids among the two target taxa are formed relatively frequently, hybrid zones often consist of F1 individuals, whereas backcrosses and later generation hybrids appear to be either rare or absent, presumably as a consequence of post-zygotic reproductive barriers acting in these food-deceptive orchids. Experimental evidence further indicates that hybrids are less fit than the parental species in attracting pollinators and that parental taxa exhibit higher or similar fitness in sympatry compared to allopatric populations. Since introgression is not frequent as indicated by molecular analyses, fitness and phenotypic trait differences observed among sympatric and allopatric populations of the parental taxa may be a consequence of pollinator-mediated selection. Our experimental data confirm that hybridization is a natural phenomenon in food-deceptive orchids and that it does not pose a threat to their survival. Furthermore, sympatric zones provide the stage for evolutionary processes in orchids, and this peculiarity should be taken into account when devising orchid conservation strategies.

                          Book Description

Liquid crystals have become ubiquitous in the displays for electronic devices, ranging from wrist watches to laptop computers. Nuclear magnetic resonance has become one of the important techniques for determining their structures and properties. Intended for researchers and students in physics, chemistry and materials science, this book provides the necessary background information and sufficient mathematical and physical detail to study the current research literature. The book begins with a survey of liquid crystal phases and field effects and with an introduction to the basic physics of nuclear magnetic resonance; it then discusses orientational ordering and molecular field theories for various liquid crystal molecules and NMR studies of uniaxial and biaxial phases. Subsequent chapters consider spin relaxation processes (using a semiclassical approach) and rotational, translational, and internal molecular dynamics of liquid crystals. The final chapter discusses two-dimensional and multiple-quantum NMR spectroscopies and their application in elucidating liquid crystal properties. This second edition, updated throughout, incorporates many new references, corrects typographical errors, and includes new mathematical appendices.

                                              Book Description

Written by a leading scholar in mathematics, this monograph discusses the Radon transform, a field that has wide ranging applications to X-ray technology, partial differential equations, nuclear magnetic resonance scanning, and tomography. In this book, Ehrenpreis focuses on recent research and highlights the strong relationship between high-level pure mathematics and applications of the Radon transform to areas such as medical imaging. The first part of the book discusses parametric and nonparametric Radon transforms, Harmonic Functions and Radon transform on Algebraic Varieties, nonlinear Radon and Fourier transforms, Radon transform on groups, and Radon transform as the interrelation of geometry and analysis. The later parts discuss the extension of solutions of differential equations, Periods of Eisenstein and Poincare, and some problems of integral geometry arising in tomography. Examples and proofs are provided throughout the book to aid the reader's understanding. This is the latest title in the Oxford Mathematical Monographs, which includes texts and monographs covering many topics of current research interest in pure and applied mathematics. Other titles include: Carbone and Semmes: A graphic apology for symmetry and implicitness; Higson and Roe: Analytic K-Homology; Iwaniec and Martin: Geometric Function Theory and Nonlinear Analysis; Lyons and Qian: System Control and Rough Paths. Also new in paperback Johnson and Lapidus: The Feynman Integral and Feynman's Operational Calculus; Donaldson and Kronheimer: The geometry of four-manifolds.

"Garp was a natural storyteller," says the narrator of John Irving's incandescent novel, referring to the book's hero, the novelist Garp, who has much in common with Irving himself. "He could make things up one right after the other, and they seemed to fit."

Irving packs wild characters and weird events into his classic--officially recognized as such in a Modern Library edition with a new introduction by the author--while amazingly maintaining the rough feel of realism in every scene and the pulse of life in every heart. Many novelists of his time might have populated a novel with a novelist protagonist whose life and books comment on each other and the novel we're reading. Transsexual football players, ball turret gunners lobotomized in battle, multiple adultery, unicycling bears, mad feminists who amputate their tongues in sympathy with the celebrated victim of a horrifying rape--Irving made them all people. Even the bear is a fitting character.

In a crucial episode, Garp's wife's seduction of a young man coincidentally occurs at the moment when Garp is delighting their young sons with a reckless car trick (one of the few scenes beautifully, eerily, heartbreakingly captured in the film version as well). Many authors would have been content with the harsh comedy of the scene, but Irving respects its integrity, and he builds the rest of the book on the consequences of the event. How does he get away with his killer cocktail of slapstick and horror? Because it's simply what we all face daily, rearranged into soul-satisfying art. "Life is an X-rated soap opera," according to Garp, and who can contradict him?

Rereading Garp 20 years later, one is struck by how elegantly Irving structures his bizarre and complex story. Take the two most celebrated bits in the book, the Under Toad and Garp's story "The Pension Grillparzer," which shimmers like an exquisite Kafkaesque insect in the amber of the novel. When Garp warns his son about the "undertow" at the beach, the boy imagines a monster out of Beowulf who lurks beneath the waves to suck you under: the "Under Toad." It's funny at first, but we soon find that the Under Toad is a metaphor with teeth--he connects with a prophetic dream of death in "The Pension Grillparzer," set in Vienna. Garp's son's last words are, "It's like a dream!" And as Irving--who studied at the University of Vienna--can certainly tell you, the German word for "death" sounds precisely like the English word "toad."

All that death, and yet Garp is mainly exuberant. This story is, as Garp's stuttering writing teacher puts it, "rich with lu-lu-lunacy and sorrow." It enriches literature, and our lives. --Tim Appelo

This is the life and times of T. S. Garp, the bastard son of Jenny
Fields--a feminist leader ahead of her times.  This is the life and death
of a famous mother and her almost-famous son; theirs is a world of sexual
extremes--even of sexual assassinations.  It is a novel rich with "lunacy
and sorrow"; yet the dark, violent events of the story do not undermine a

provides almost cheerful, even hilarious evidence of its famous last line:
"In the world according to Garp, we are all terminal cases."

I read this book along with A Prayer For Owen Meany and both books are excellent studies in tragic characters. Garp, a school teacher seems to finally get his life together only to be undone by an obsessed woman (she reminded me of the character in Fatal Attraction).

The book never gets boring and is difficult to put down!

Character development is wonderful; I finished this book several weeks ago and Garp is still on my mind daily.

This is amusing enough to be good. A transsexual that was a former professional football player, and a tight end at that, what is that, recursively tongue in cheek? Very funny. Not that this is all lightweight, of course, oral sex accidents notwithstanding.

2 out of 5 stars The Gospel of Mutilation.......2007-04-04

It is odd, and perhaps a bit sad, that John Irving has become or became American's literary sweetheart. Given his narrative concerns, it would seem a wide readership would have never been his fate. For one, he is fixated on the mutilation of the human body. This mania with mutilation borders on the near fantastic in The World According to Garp. And more disturbingly still, is it completely infiltrates the narrative's sense of sexuality. For the narrator of Garp, sex and bodily mutilation are nearly synonymous. And what is the purpose of this overall fixation with the lopping off of limbs and the act of sex? In The World According to Garp, sex is not viewed as a healthy or even human impulse. It is only when the major characters divest themselves of lust, or sexual activity, that they extricate themselves from most of their mental woes. It's a grim vision. It is hard to envision flocks of readers gobbling this book in the late 70's and early 80's and viewing it as the great voice of our (or their) time. The novel is also written on a high level of generality. No reader should expect to plumb very deeply into the human condition in this novel. Like Garp's writing itself, Irving's prose is witty and salacious, but never really gives the reader any serious human dilemma to masticate and digest. There is something to chew, but it is light fare.

... and counting. It is a great book: offensive, sweet, harsh, sad, shocking and entertaining--all in one! Must read it, but don't forget A Cider House Rules, too.

The genius of this piece is that Irving has created a character in T.S.Garp who is an even better writer than himself. "The Pension Grillparzer," Garp's first and best work, is even better than Irving could have written himself.

this story within a story, to me, is the highlight of the world according to garp. the plot is funny and beautiful and sad and humbles me as a writer. this story holds its own outside of the context of the novel, however i recommend it be read in the book for full effect.
