Another fine book from a great series.......2005-08-19

The basic essentials series are terrific little books. Long enough to provide everything you need to know about a topic such as wilderness weather, outdoor cooking, or backpacking, yet short enough to keep you from reading too much extra and unneccesary stuff. Camping can be dangerous even for the most experianced, things happen. You need to be prepared and this book will help you, in addition I reccommend a Red Cross Basic First Aid class. Covers all the basics starting from first aid to helping the victim of a serious accident stay alive and comfortable util the professional rescuers arive. Covers wounds, abdominal pains, bites and stings, CPR, heat or cold exposure , wrap sprains, fractures and dislocated joints. as well as lists of essential items for an outdoor first aid kit.

The book helps you build the proper first aid kit depending on your type of need with its suggested lists of items. An effecient 68 pages in length with very helpful illustrations, is softcover and a good small size for packing. This is a good book to keep at home too, and keep a copy in your car trunk as well. You might also consider adding another book from the Basic Essentials Series, Wilderness Survival. I highly reccommend this and others in the series.

Wilderness First Aid.......2000-06-28

Not bad! However, I would have preferred a little more depth being in the medical profession. It is a good book for the novice. Bone and joint injuries was done very well as was the physical examination section. It is a nice book for campers and naturalists.

Portugal and Spain are not the same.......2003-01-15

I consider travel guides on of the most useful books. When someone likes to travel like me, it is an opportunity to experience deeply local issues thatb other wise would tend to be hidden from the first time around tourist.
For this reason I totally disagree on the fact that the author tends to summarize Portugal and Spain, two of the oldest countries in Europe, therefore with totaly different aspects and much to say about, in one single book.
On the educational side, it is misleading for most people does not know where Portugal is and considers it part of Spain. I hope the author could appreciate the completly different realities when in Portugal and in Spain..

Use it for sightseeing, not for eating.......2003-01-15

We took this book on a 2 week tour of Spain. While informative for the larger cities, we found Rick's book simply lacked a lot of information that, looking back, would have made our trip a hundred times better. Rick's hotel choices gave sparse details, and he failed to stress the necessity of air conditioning-- something we found well worth an extra $5. Do not go to Spain in the summer and get a hotel without a/c - even keeping the windows open was not an option for us with the city noise.

While we were usually happy with Rick's sightseeing choices, we found his restaurant decisions were poor. The places we tried that he recommended were pleasant but had no interest in tourists (even the back door kind). The places we found on our own - off-beat family-run types - were much better. There we had kitchen staff coming out to "practice their English" on us, we were given free samples of Spanish cuisine that we hadn't ordered, and basically felt like we were interacting more with the staff and therefore experiencing more. None of those places were in Rick's book.

If I were going to Spain again, I'd rip out the sightseeing parts and take them along with a different book for eating and sleeping. Just my 2 cents.

Best book for seeing the best of the Iberian Penninsula.......2002-10-16

Here's my response to reviewers complaining about lack of detailed information ... well, DUH! It's the whole purpose of the book to be selective, instead of data-dumping 2000 pages of hotel listings for villages that 99% of the tourists never go to.

If you want that other kind of travel guidebook, or if you're traveling to the one-oxcart villages, then go buy one of those books. (We also bought a Lonely Planet book, esp. for the cultural and historical background info.) But you were fully informed and warned that this book is SELECTIVE.

From the back cover: "Most travel guidebooks try to impress you with massive amounts of data. My philosophy is...[to] present you with only the best" From the second paragraph of the introduction, page one: "This book breaks Spain and Portugal into their TOP big city, small town, and rural destinations. It then gives you all the information and opinions NECESSARY to wring the maximum value out of your limited time and money. If you plan A MONTH OR LESS in Iberia, this LEAN AND MEAN little book is all you need." [emphasis added by me]

Once again, you were fully informed that this book is selective, so why do you complain about that selectivity?

Personally, I found this book was absolutely indispensible in planning our trip to Spain. It solved our biggest problem with the trip: it was our first time there, we wanted to see the best that this amazing country has to offer, but we only had 2 weeks. We also did not want to buy a package tour for budget reasons and because you don't get to see as much of the "genuine" country.

Rick Steves' book saved the day. It helped us pick the top places to visit, and the top sights in each city. The recommended hotels were also real finds -- some of them were easily worth twice as much as they were charging, and the book lets you know which of the expensive hotels are really worth the splurge and which are just stuffy tourist traps. Phone numbers, email and web addresses, hours, and train/bus info was also very accurate (obviously some of the info is going to change, but it was maybe 95% correct), with new updates and helpful info available.

terrible mistake.......2002-08-28

I brought only this book (previous edition) when visiting Spain two years ago, and greatly regretted my choice. The problem is that the book covers the "big places", but has very little in the way of smaller towns, or less visited areas. So, you can go to Barcelona, but find almost nothing on the large number of small villages and towns near there.

Spend a few dollars more and get a "full" tourbook and use this as a back-up if you like his style, but don't use it alone.

A Must Have Guide.......2002-04-06

This book is well organized and was very helpful in planning my trip to Spain. This guide book helped me prioritize my trip. I actually stayed at one of the recommended hotels,which I booked myself,with the help of books reservation worksheet. It worked out great, the hotel was cheap but room was fantastic-I could not believe it!!!It is a great guide.

It seems that Mr. Steves is more concerned about his political views than giving us good travel info, at times. 'Even suitable for a Republican to dine at' and 'Republicans might be shaking from the customs' were a couple of examples (not verbatum) and he criticized Norway's whaling culture, but approved of Denmark's permissive culture toward drugs and sex.

Ok, ok...I'll stop my rant. I just was hoping for more travel substance and less politicizing. The book was geared toward the population centers, so you might not get the info outside of the two largest cities in each country...was hoping for more out of the way information.

Also, not too much info on driving. Geared more toward rail travel, which is ok and probably better for students traveling abroad.

On the plus side, he had a kind of cool trip suggestion based on the number of days you have available (from 3 to 21 days), but again it is based on the larger cities.

I think I will look for more specifics by getting individual books for each country.

The book had some decent info, but it was spotty. For example, most info was based on population centers (Oslo and Bergen for Norway, and that's about it).

Plus, I don't mind if a writer is liberal or conservative, but he seems to go out of his way to cut down those that don't hold his views. For example, 'even a Republican would eat there.' Or talking about how a Republican would be shaking from sites seen in certain areas. C'mon already. While you might think Republicans are a different species, it does detract from the reason people read your books. Also, cutting down Norway because they allow whaling, but praising Denmark for its liberal views on drugs or cohabitation.

Ok, sorry for my rant. The book as some good points, especially if your travels focus on population centers. It is biased toward rail travel (versus travel by car), but that is ok, and probably good for younger travelers.

It also had an interesting suggested travel routes, based on the number of days you have. Kind of a neat idea.

All in all, the book left me wishing there was more detail. Maybe I need to buy individual books for each country, rather than trying to get all of my Scandanavia reference from one book.

Still and always a key reference.......2000-03-31

This book belongs on every serious biologist's bookshelf -when it isn't on your desk, in your easy chair, in the clutches of your students, etc. Not as "easy a read" as Mayr's more "popular" books like the wonderful ONE LONG ARGUMENT, this was and is a definitive statement on key elements of the evolutionary synthesis. Get it & read it!

This book represents the first asymptotic analysis, via completely integrable techniques, of the initial value problem for the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the semiclassical asymptotic regime. This problem is a key model in nonlinear optical physics and has increasingly important applications in the telecommunications industry. The authors exploit complete integrability to establish pointwise asymptotics for this problem's solution in the semiclassical regime and explicit integration for the underlying nonlinear, elliptic, partial differential equations suspected of governing the semiclassical behavior. In doing so they also aim to explain the observed gradient catastrophe for the underlying nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations, and to set forth a detailed, pointwise asymptotic description of the violent oscillations that emerge following the gradient catastrophe.

To achieve this, the authors have extended the reach of two powerful analytical techniques that have arisen through the asymptotic analysis of integrable systems: the Lax-Levermore-Venakides variational approach to singular limits in integrable systems, and Deift and Zhou's nonlinear Steepest-Descent/Stationary Phase method for the analysis of Riemann-Hilbert problems. In particular, they introduce a systematic procedure for handling certain Riemann-Hilbert problems with poles accumulating on curves in the plane. This book, which includes an appendix on the use of the Fredholm theory for Riemann-Hilbert problems in the Hölder class, is intended for researchers and graduate students of applied mathematics and analysis, especially those with an interest in integrable systems, nonlinear waves, or complex analysis.

Ancient Book that Remains Relevant.......2006-10-22

For a book compiled in the 4th/3rd centuries B.C. it is interesting (but not surprising) how relevant this book remains, for sickness and the effort to heal are enduring aspects of the human condition.

"The Oath" at the beginning sets out some basic precepts, including: "I will not give a fatal draught to anyone if I am asked, nor will I suggest such a thing. Neither will I give a woman means to procure an abortion." "I will be chaste and religious in my life and in my practice."

There is an interesting idea here about the link between cooking and medicine. Early humans realized that they could not eat the same raw/uncooked foods as animals without getting sick, so they started cooking and making their diet more palatable in order to improve their health.

Some things have clearly changed: "Although the art of healing is the most noble of all the arts, yet, because of the ignorance both of its professors and of their rash critics, it has at this time fallen into the least repute of them all."

The greater significance of this work is as a contribution to science; a triumph of empiricism over superstition, the notion that logical observation could be brought to bear on healing rather than a primary reliance on folk medicine or strange ritual.

Taste of Ancient Western Medicine.......2003-06-10

This work is a sampling of the Hippocratic Corpus, a collection of ancient Greek medical works. Hippocrates himself may have written some, but certainly not all, of the texts. The collection spans centuries and contains slightly differing views. This makes for a fuller picture of ancient Greek medicine. As one reads through the book, the reader gets a real sense of the medical theories and "facts" of the time. A majority of Hippocratic Writings is concerned with internal medicine and diseases. At the beginning, and interspersed throughout, there are discussions on the philosophy of being a physician. There is a large section about how to treat limb fractures, and the section called The Nature of Man describes the physiological theories of the time. The book ends with a discussion of embryology and a brief anatomical description of the heart. The work is not too difficult to read and seems to be very well translated. The large introduction to the book serves well to place the setting of the book and understand a bit of the translation. A Glossary of Names appears in the back. This seems to serve more as an academic reference as it is not necessary to refer to it as one reads the book. Along with the general index, there is the Supplementary Index to Medical Treatises. This index lists instances within Hippocratic Writings that, in the context of current medical knowledge, describes some now more commonly known medical conditions and diseases. Some knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and ancient Greek scientific philosophy are helpful in reading the book.
