GREAT REFERENCE BOOK! A++.......2005-01-16
I used this book extensively, as I was shooting the best beaches we could find for our DVD "Hawaiian Dreams" here on Amazon. It saved us a lot of time with great descriptions and informative facts. I highly recommend it, and if you want to actually see, hear and feel what these beaches look like, check out our DVD as well as this book.
Hawaii's best beaches is very informative........2000-07-15
I've read John Clark's other books, and this one tops them all. It combines the information from all of Hawaii's best beaches in a creative and informative way. I am new to the Hawaii islands, so I also enjoy reading part of the history of the beaches as well as the meaning of the Hawaiian beach names. This book is also complete with beautiful color photos. I would recommend this book to anyone visiting Hawaii. Beaches are Hawaii's greatest asset.

Book Description
Functional Microbial Genomics, edited by two leading experts in the field, provides the researcher with an up-to-date collection of articles on post-genome technologies central to studying the function of microorganisms.
Since the release of the first complete genome sequence of a free-living organism in 1995, over 100 microbial genomes have been completely sequenced. The advent of new technologies for post-genomic analyses has allowed the rapid exploitation of this genome sequence information, heralding a golden era in microbial research.
Functional Microbial Genomics provides in-depth accounts from scientists working with these new technologies explaining both the techniques and the ways in which they have been applied to the study of gene function in different microbial species.
Methods in Microbiology is the most prestigious series devoted to techniques and methodology in the field. Established for over 30 years,
Methods in Microbiology will continue to provide you with tried and tested, cutting edge protocols to directly benefit your research.
* Bioinformatic approaches to genome sequence analysis
* Details the design, construction and applications of DNA microarrays
* Covers advances in bacterial proteome and metagenome analysis
* Describes functional genomic approaches for novel antibiotic target and vaccine candidate discovery
* Presents case studies where functional genomic analyses have revolutionized our understanding of model species

A Primer for Policy Analysis
ASIN: 0471183091 |
Book Description
Master the fundamental math skills necessary to quantify and evaluate a broad range of environmental questions.
Environmental issues are often quantitative—how much land, how many people, what amount of pollution. Computer programs are useful, but there is no substitute for being able to use a simple calculation to slice through to the crux of the problem. Having a grasp of how the factors interact and whether the results make sense allows one to explain and argue a point of view forcefully to diverse audiences.
With an engaging, down-to-earth style and practical problem-solving approach, Ecological Numeracy makes it easy to understand and master basic mathematical concepts and techniques that are applicable to life-cycle assessment, energy consumption, land use, pollution generation, and a broad range of other environmental issues. Robert Herendeen brings the numbers to life with dozens of fascinating, often entertaining examples and problems.
Requiring only a moderate quantitative background, Ecological Numeracy is a superb introduction for advanced undergraduate students in environmental science, planning, geography, and physical and natural sciences. It is also a valuable professional resource for environmental managers, regulators, and administrators.
Customer Reviews:
Thank god some sanity on the issue!.......2000-12-19
This book should be read by any who want some reality applied to their ecology beliefs. This book is really a competent upper division text book that takes quantitative analysis seriously. My take is that Herendeen is attempting to make ecology into something akin to current day economics. The education about and then critique of cost benefit analysis (consider the time discount rate of the value defined over 300 years) was informative to novices like me who are inclined to promote simple cost benefit analysis approaches of almost all ecology problems. The raw data on large numbers of ecology parameters is also useful (e.g. half life of CO2 in the atmosphere, and hundreds of other data points) just to get some scale to your ecology intuitions.
Too broad range for an environmental issue.......1998-11-22
This book presents a broad range of environmental analysis. We have a brief introduction to the problem. The best way must be a focus in quantitative analyis of specific environemtal problem

The celebration of Irrational Energy .......2005-11-01
Prior to Nietzsche the Greeks had been celebrated for their great calm and rationality. Nietzsche pointed to the irrational, passionate , energetic elements, the Dionysian force which contended with life and death as central element of the Greek Reality. The 'Birth of Tragedy (1872) is his first book but already present are his tremendous power to shock, his aphoristic brilliance, his effort to ' turn the tables' and break the mold of our ordinary thinking.
He himself says in describing the Birth of Tragedy" connects us with that which counters the Periclean desire for the beautiful and the good. He sees a desire preceding the desire for the good and the beautiful, " namely, the desire for the ugly or the good strong willing of the ancient Hellenes for pessimism, for tragic myth, for pictures of everything fearful, angry, enigmatic, destructive, and fateful as the basis of existence? Where must tragedy come from? Perhaps out of desire, out of power, out of overflowing health, out of overwhelming fullness of life?"
In his enthusiasm Nietzsche condemns the Socratic caution which will come afterwards, and which he claims will come to dominate the thought of the Christian West.
The Dialectic model of Art.......2000-01-14
Since the only other review is fairly obtuse about this book, it seems necessary to write another. If you consider yourself a creative entity, an artist, a musician, a filmmaker, a writer; then this book should be required reading. It describes two opposing "forces", Apollo and Dionysus, who are in perpetual conflict. From this conflict, all great art is born.
It is a dialectic, Thesis meets Antithesis to beget Synthesis.
The real point is though, after reading the book, you look for these opposing forces in everyday life and find them everywhere. Man and woman, religion and science, good and evil (for rudimentary examples). After reading the book it was apparent how much of this world is constructed out of, and centered on, opposition. It's like Matt Modine's helmet in Full Metal Jacket, man is a creature with inherent duality.
The Birth of Tragedy touches on something so essential and instinctually true to our existence that it can only vaguely be explained in words. Nietszche knows this and presents the concept as eloquently and clearly as it allows. It is up to the reader to take this knowledge as a starting point and explore deeper into their own individual experience and perspective.
Knowledge through tragedy.......1999-05-08
Any westerner (occidental man),will tell you if asked that knowledge must contain reason in order to qualify as such.Science will testify to that.Shall it be added that dialectic consists of the method to achieve this conclusive perfection.Presocratic thinkers were on a different track. The chaotic and fulgurent rythms of the Dyonisan asiatic music merge with the stern powerful measured, proportionated art of the Appolonian god gave their true followers inspired knowledge.Try it and you will know.Let fear have no part in it.
