This book is OK but for the beginner trying to get the most for your money in explanation of precious gemstones, I don't really recommend this book a necessity for right away. You can enter it to your reference library at a later time. It is a good book but doesn't have enough details needed at first for identifications.

I took out this book in the middle of fourth grade. I loved it so much I kept it till the end of the year. Then I took it out again in fifth grade, along with the Moths and Butterflies book from the same series. These books are wonderful tools for projects, assignments, or just plain fun! I'm planning on buying this book soon once I earn enough money. (I'm broke T_T)

I bought this for my 7-yr. old daughter - budding rock hound and naturalist! Like other DK books, the photography is luscious and the layout is casual and very inviting - full of beautiful images.
It provides a great overview of rocks and minerals, including tools used to find them, the different characteristics and where specific types of rocks and minerals can be found. It also provides detailed "specifics" such as classification, occurence and cleavage - as appropriate.
This is a thoroughly engaging book for all ages and it is highly recommended.

I am the author of two books, "Collecting Fluorescent Minerals" and "The World of Fluorescent Minerals" and needed additional resources for non-fluorescent minerals. This book was nicely done - good illustrations, lots of variety, clearly written - but the information covering fluorescent minerals in this book was not very accurate. Every mineral collector needs several sources to get a good idea of what he or she has and this is one that I will continue to use. This should not be your only book, but it is worth having among your library.

I have been looking for a field guide for my 6-year-old son and could only find books for children that gave a general overview of rocks and minerals. This book is the one I have been looking for. I knew that DK would be the publisher to give me what I wanted. In DK fashion, the pages are easy to read without a lot of text clunking up the page. The rocks are organized in nice boxes with information laid out neatly and unobtrusively. Each page features two new rocks with a large full-color picture of each. This is now his favorite book. It has all of the information we have been looking for in a concise, easy-to-read format. Each profile gives the name and visual outline of crystal system; specific gravity; cleavage; fracture; chemical test to confirm identification; mineral-forming environment; main text describes mineral's identifying features; standard name of the mineral; chemical group to which the mineral belongs; chemical formula for the mineral; hardness according to the Mohs' scale; variations of the mineral shown in full-color when applicable; annotations identifying mineral's main identifying features. I LOVE this book. It is a great book for kids(who eat, sleep, and breathe rocks and minerals) and adults. I am thinking of getting another one just for me. I think this would also be an invaluable resource for classroom teachers. I will be teaching First Grade and will use this book to introduce scientific concepts.

William McNeill explores the phenomenon of the Augenblick, or "glance of the eye," in Heidegger's thought, and in particular its relation to the primacy of seeing and of theoretical apprehending (theoria) both in Aristotle and in the philosophical and scientific tradition of Western thought. McNeill argues that Heidegger's early reading of Aristotle, which identifies the experience of the Augenblick at the heart of ethical and practical knowledge (phronesis), proves to be a decisive encounter for Heiddegger's subsequent understanding and critique of the history of philosophy, science, and technology. It provides him with a critical resource for addressing the problematic domination of theoretical knowledge in Western civilization. Such knowledge, the author shows, always remains in a peculiar tension (itself historically determined and changing) with ethical or "protoethical" knowledge, which is bound to the finite, "ekstatic" temporality of the lived and living moment, and inevitably exposed to the presence of the sensuous.

A great philosophical text that is both broad and deep........2004-01-01
As a philosophical figure, Heidegger is one who is sometimes, perhaps even often, largely avoided even by those whose interests reside in continental philosophy. This relative unfamiliarity is a great loss not only because of H's massive erudition and creativity but because the span of his project brings into one evolving vocabulary the span of western metaphysics from the Pre-Socratics to the peculiarities of science and technology in the late 20th century.
Few are able to bring clarity and contribution to Heidegger's project both because of H's complexity and because H depends so heavily on a mastery of languages, ancient and modern. McNeill, one of H's best and most prolific translators, is well suited to this task.
While the book's title may lead one to see it as highly specialized. M traces his thread of the "Augenblick" through the whole of H corpus as an organizing thread. The primary axis of this reading is through the relatedness of H to Aristotle. As such an exploration, the volume helps clarify a huge current that has come to the present with determinations that echo into daily affairs.
While any summary of such a dense text that is already synoptic must be foolish, the following is an attempt.
The volume suggests convincingly that our collective vision of being in the world has undergone an extensive alteration although one begun perhaps with the Platonic concept of the forms. Too briefly, this shift has brought about a gradual separation of the comportment appropriate to praxis and phronesis and the modern methodologies of theorization and experimentalism in which our encounter with being is given in advance, out of a centeredness of the subject most clearly initiated by Descartes, rather than as a unprejudiced appreciation of the particularity and difference immanent in our immediate locality and temporality. In contrast, the Augenblick names a caring, if anxious, attending to the here and now which is less the projection of a habitual expectation upon being than an attentiveness to the fate of the moment.
The effect of this text is grand. It lays open how much more has yet to be articulated of H's project; it understands from one perspective the grand sweep or trajectory of philosophy; it coordinates the relations of the technological and traditional philosophy; and it supplies a framework from which to reconceive the work of more recent figures -- such as Derrida and Deleuze --which makes their obscurities less vexing.
In short, this book should be in every philosophical library.

This book is a report of a cognitive journey towards the reliable simulation of scattering problems using finite element methods. The pre-asymptotic analysis of Galerkin FEM for the Helmholtz equation with moderate and large wave number forms the core of the book. The topics include a priori and a posteriori error estimation as well as the stabilized methods. The mathematical investigation of model problems is given in close connection with the physical problem of acoustic scattering and fluid-solid interaction. Starting from the basic physical assumptions, the author methodically develops both the strong and weak forms of the governing equations. The main chapter on finite element analysis is preceded by a systematic treatment of Galerkin methods for indefinite sesquilinear forms. The book also contains broad reference material on numerical methods for the Helmholtz equation in unbounded domains, including Dirichlet-to-Neumann methods, absorbing boundary conditions, infinite elements and the perfectly matched layer. In the final chapter, three dimensional computational simulations are presented and compared with experimental data. Students and researchers in mathematics, physics and engineering, as well as scientists and computational engineers working on scattering problems will find this book of interest. The author has produced a self-contained and easily readable work containing numerous illustrations of the theory with numerical examples and computational results.

Swann’s Way, published in 1913, is the first part of Proust’s seven-part novel A la Recherche du temps perdu. The author’s expansion, revision and correction of the work were cut short by his death in 1922, and sixty-six years later editors are still producing variants of the last three volumes based on working notebooks. The novel’s structure was compared by its author to that of a cathedral, and its status is that of one of the greatest literary landmarks of the twentieth century. Sheila Stern’s study begins with a summary of the whole novel and goes on to give an account of the activity of reading as part of its subject-matter. Two chapters are devoted to Swann’s Way itself, with close attention to the opening pages, and to such topics as memory, time, imagery and names. The book’s reception in various Western literatures is discussed, and there is a guide to further reading.

Marcel PROUST (1871-1922) through his 'RESEARCH OF THE TIMES LOST'(published l913-27) carries us to a mental paradise. Analysis of the sub-conscious is the main characteristic of this fictionised reminiscence, for which the author has used long complex sentences. Otherwise the human characters involved and their situations are described vividly.
"DU COTE'DE CHEZ SWANN" is the first book of this long series. It is based on romance of the COMBRAY of his young age,in which the innocent sensibility of a child is mellowed with the craving sensuality of the adolescent.A number of interesting characters emerge with their contradictions, cruelty, hypocrisy, snobism, irony and mind conditioning. The first book is the best book.
AUNT LEONI enjoys her last days within confines of the bed room. She keeps abreast with the street life through direct window observations supplemented by more informations FRANCOISE and EUTALIE bring. She receives only those friends who know what to tell her but, amusingly, she cannot prevent the priest from droping in and tiring her from his disenchanting show of knowledge.
Family member, kitchen chief, and Personal Secretary to AUNT, FRANCOISE, could not be a less personality, offering from matured life experience 'expert' opinion on many a matter. She respects the time table and wishes of her Mistress in minute details, all the time preparing for the imminent change of command to the narrator's mother. From the long association, Aunt and Francoise know ins and outs of each other's psyche.Aunt on occasions to herself detests FRANCOISE astoundingly,while the latter grudges any small gift the former gives to poor and deformed Eutalie. Francoise shows great affectation on human suffering in abstraction, but derives sadistic pleasure from it under her eyes. She would cause every possible affliction to the kitchen girl - pregnant, in travail or allergic - till she runs away vacating place for Francoise daughter.
An unorthodox M. SWANN is family friend with property in the neighborhood. Often he dines in the house and brings presents as requested or by himself.When he comes,the dinner is prolonged to late night hours and the boy narrator misses the sweet good-night kiss of his mother. The stream-of-consciousness description of the unique night he could retain Mother in his bed-room is breath-taking; it motivated writing this book and the series.
Mother reads out from the book for the boy Proust and with what an elegance: 'Sentences seemed written for her tender and melancholy voice...She infused into the prose a continuous sentimental life!
Parents take the boy to evening walks either to the side of Swann's property, or towards that of GUERMANTES duchy. These provide the first two subtitles of the Proust's "Research".
One evening, he returns tired of a long walk. Then at the very sight of the familiar backyard, "the ground moves for him in that garden without he having to take a single step forward".
The lunch hour is advanced on Saturdays by one hour for Francoise's sake. It impresses all afternoon activities up to heavens: "After the lunch, even the sky appears to have changed face; the sun, conscious of it being Saturday, loiters one hour more on celestial heights".
As the book advances, Swann's image grows slowly and steadily till, in the second part, he is the hero. A non-conformist to the social prejudices of his time and class, humble, kind, considerate, lover of music, literature and women, Proust acclaims him in these words: "Swann of the charming errors of my youth, our life, musium of his time's all familiar portraits, full of leisure and perfumed by all the best of nature".
M. VINTEUIL gave lessons of piano to Aunt Leoni in her early age, and hoped to edit a day his original compositions retained more in memory than in writing. His daughter comes under the influence of a known lesbian and the affectionate father, for her sake, tolerates the woman under his own roofs. Vinteul has been very severe to youngsters for a least misdemeanor,and after this humiliation too, remained a proud fault-finder for others. He dies, however, soon crushed and suffocated. His daughter loved and respected him, but under the spell of carnal pleasure, swallowed all insult the woman inflicted on the old man living or dead.
M. LEGRANDIN is a writer. When at Combray, he showers the young narrator with poetic kindness: "May the heavens be ever blue on your life, my young friend...be careful to keep some open sky on you...All the ear can hear now is the moonlight music on the
flute of silence!"
On the litmus of personal experience, however, he turns out to be only an erudit miser who, with empty words "could build a castle of ethics and a universe of geography without admitting a word of truth" which would benefit a friend.
It is unforgetable to read how a small event like tasting a tea-soaked piece of cake triggered, in narrator's memory, that vivid emergence of the long forgotten Combray. Remember the church tower of Sainte HILLAIRE, omnipresent in the town. It haunts PROUST henceforth wherever he goes as a symbol of something exquisite and intimately his. "I turned into a street, still looking for my way...but..it was in my heart!"
Proust's prose abounds in beautiful expressions as already quoted and as in this praise of BERGOTTE: "With confidence and joy I wept on the writer's page as if in the arms of a rediscovered father",
and thoughtful socio-psychological observations as
"Our social personality is a creation of others' thought. Even the simple act of seeing a person is partly an intellectual act."
The world of Proust is vast and deep. We can touch his soul and meet his Muse only under infinite peace of mind.
