Customer Reviews:
Experience the California Coast.......2007-07-17
Experience the California Coast is a guide to the beaches and parks along the northern Californian coast. This book is divided into five parts according to county: Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Sonoma, and Marin. Each of these sections includes a coloured topography map labelled with all of the major roadways as well as all of the national parks in that particular region. Each chapter then goes on to detail various parks, trails, and recreational areas including their location and a little about what is found in this location. All options are also summarized in an easy to view chart for convenience.
Interspersed amongst the chapters are several very attractive features. Colour pictures of various natural sites, animals, and plants are found in every chapter. Moreover, some of these photographs are accompanied by blurbs giving some description of the location or a little background on the species. There are also textboxes discussing the history or historic significance of various locations.
An Overview of North Coast Travel Opportunities.......2007-05-30
North of the Golden Gate Bridge, the California Coast becomes much more rural and rugged. Many state parks, beaches, tourist towns, and rivers invite exploration, but there is so much out there it is hard to know where to begin. Enter the California Coastal Commision which has somehow strong-armed the University of California Press into printing a guidebook listing all parks, beaches, public access points, private nature preserves, hostels, and many whale watching tours. (When was the last time a major university press published a travel guide?) If you are unsure where to go, this book is a good place to look for ideas.
On the whole, this is a decent book. Every park, tourist center, or beach has a one to three paragraph description focusing on the basics: fees, directions, natural features and the like. Destinations are listed from north to south with facing maps showing their location. The book is further divided into six major chapters: one for each county north of San Francisco. Interspersed throughout the text are feature articles covering everything from techtonic plates to birding and common coastal flowers. The color photos are stunning, but don't expect that much blue sky on your vacation. The north coast receives a lot of rain.
My main concern with the book is that park descriptions are sometimes too brief. In some ways, this is an unfair criticism because comprehensive guides cannot get bogged down in details. Still, I thought hiking was definitely shorted in this book. Day hikers will want to supplement it with John McKinney's California's Coastal Parks: A Day Hiker's Guide. If you want to spend several days, or weeks, exploring the wilder sections of the coast on foot, consider getting Bob Lorentzen and Richard Nichols Hiking the California Coastal Trail, Volume 1: Oregon to Monterey. State parks also often publish their own literature and maps. That said, this book is a valuable resource for planning your north coast vacation. Get it and go enjoy California's wild and scenic coastline.

Book Description
World War I conjures up visions of barbed wire, trenches, mud and massive and futile offensives with horrendous casualties. The frustrating stalemate on the western front with its unprecedented casualties provoked a furious debate in London between the civil and military authorities over the best way to defeat Germany. The passions aroused continued to the present day. The mercurial and dynamic David Lloyd George stood at the centre of this controversy throughout the war. His intervention in military questions and determination to redirect strategy put him at odds with the leading soldiers and admirals of his day.
David Woodward, a student of the Great War for some four decades, explores the at times Byzantine atmosphere at Whitehall by exhaustive archival research in official and private papers. The focus is on Lloyd George and his adversaries such as Lord Kitchener, General Sir William Robertson, and Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig. But the result is a fresh, compelling and detailed account of the interaction between civil and military authorities in total war.

Book Description
Rintala makes a unique case for the role that friendship plays in politics.
Customer Reviews:
Understanding the minds of great men.......2003-04-24
For as long as I can remember, I have had an interest in the biographies of great statesmen. I wanted to read about the lives of the men that have changed the world and understand what made them unique, what gave them the ability to be such influential historical figures. But reading about the bare-bones facts of a person's life does not reveal their inner motives; it does not tell the reader what forces drove these men to lead such influential lives. It was not until I read Rintala's book about the friendship between Churchill and Lloyd George that I discovered the missing link: combining psychology with biography. Not only does this book give the reader a fascinating perspective into the relationship between these two men, it tells the reader what forces shaped their personalities. I would recommend this book to anyone who is seriously interested in understanding the lives of two of the most powerful people of the 20th century. If you think you know the lives of Lloyd George or Winston Churchill by reading other biographies, your understanding of these two men will not be complete until you have read this book.
Really REALLY BAD!!!!!.......2001-12-09
Not only is this the most boring book on the market but it is absolutely ridiculous. Historical facts are completely incorrect,(...)Worst of all, the grammar and vocabulary used in the book are just plain aweful. I have no idea how this book ever got published. Please go get your eyebrows waxed before reading this sad, painful garbage.
Terrible.......1999-05-11
I have to agree with the other two reviewers. This is one of the silliest books that I have ever read. The grammar and syntax in this book are lamentable and it is extremely boring. This truly is some of the worst writing I've ever read. My advice is to run from any book that this man has the audacity to publish. Hardly a scholar and nowhere near being a writer, this author should truly give up!!
Tedious and Ridiculous.......1999-05-10
As a professor of political science at Columbia University it is shocking to see that such a terribly written and outrageous theory could be published. This book is a disgrace to the field and should be noted as the most aweful piece of writing I have ever had the displeasure to read. The author believes himself infallible and is clearly suffering from delusions if he could seriously consider this as a serious piece of academic literature. Overall, the worst historical interpretation ever written.
A horrendous historical distortion........1999-04-23
This book was a terrible compolation of ridiculous fact and capricious opinion. The author, clearly a pompous man, makes enormously random and unfounded claims. His theories are ignorant and foolish, accompanied by tedious and gramatically poor writing. Truly an atrocious piece of writing.

Book Description
A history of contemporary rhetoric, Visions and Revisions: Continuity and Change in Rhetoric and Composition examines the discipline’s emergence and development from the rise of new rhetoric in the late 1960s through the present. Editor James D. Williams has assembled nine essays from leading scholars to trace the origins of new rhetoric and examine current applications of genre studies, the rhetoric of science, the rhetoric of information, and the influence of liberal democracy on rhetoric in society.
Given the field’s diversity, a historical sketch cannot adopt a single perspective. Part one of Visions and Revisions therefore offers the detailed reminiscences of four pioneers in new rhetoric, while the essays in part two reflect on a variety of issues that have influenced (and continue to influence) current theory and practice. In light of the recent shift in focus of scholarly investigation toward theory, Williams’s collection contextualizes the underlying tension between theory and practice while stressing instruction of students as the most important dimension of rhetoric and composition today. Together, these chapters from some of the most influential scholars in the field provide a range of perspectives on the state of rhetoric and composition and illuminate the discipline’s development over the course of the last forty years.

During a seance, the daughter of England's Prime Minister vanishes. It's up to paranormal investigator John Darnell and famous author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to find her.

Customer Reviews:
Doesnt ring true.......2004-10-29
In his introduction McCarver thanks about five people for editing and feedback. It would have been a good idea if one of them had been English. Time and time again he shows his lack of knowledge about basic things in England. Police had truncheons not nightsticks, a car is full of petrol not gas. Really irritating is when he must have heard a word in a movie but doesnt know how its spelt.Eg when somebody is going crazy they are Barmy not Balmy.
The actual story isnt up to much but it is reasonably entertaining. If McCarver sticks to writing mysteries set in the USA he'll do a lot better
Interesting historical perspective in this fascinating work.......2000-11-08
As 1916 draws towards an end, the war between Great Britain and Germany appears to have no end in sight. Prime Minister Lloyd George has been in office for a week when his friend Sir Arthur Conan Doyle persuades him to host a séance in order to contact his daughter, dead for nine years. Because he feels guilt, Lloyd agrees. Just as the medium goes into a trance, the lights go out. When they come back on, the Prime Minister's youngest teenage daughter is missing.
Doyle visits his friend John Darnell, a psychic debunker, to attend the next night's séance. As happened previously, the lights go out just as the medium enters a trance. When the lights come back on, someone stabbed to death an aid to the prime minister. Someone has used the cloak of the séances to kidnap a teenager and kill a person who unluckily chanced upon information. Lloyd receives a ransom note threatening the life of his child if he fails to agree to Germany's peace offering. John Darnell races the clock to save a life of an innocent caught up in world politics.
Sam McCarver writes a fascinating work that gives the audience a strong sense of the times. The mood of the British people before America's entry into World War I is fascinating yet understandable. Nonetheless, the magic to THE CASE OF THE 2ND SÉANCE lies in the hero whose actions insure readers get more than their money's worth.

Book Description
This ground-breaking book probes the way that two capitalist superpowers, Great Britain and the United States, responded to the momentous challenge of revolution that emerged during the early years of this century. Focusing on two key figures--Woodrow Wilson and David Lloyd George--the book explores the collective impact on the Western democracies of the revolutions that swept Mexico in 1910, China in 1911, and, especially, Russia in 1917.
Customer Reviews:
A Flawed book with a Misleading title.......2005-04-26
Lloyd C. Gardner's Safe for Democracy: The Anglo-American Response to Revolution, 1911-1923 looks on the surface to be a discussion of the rapproachment of the two English-speaking Powers in the 1910s-1920s, focusing on Woodrow Wilson and David Lloyd George, but Gardner manages to miss the book on both counts because (1) Wilson and George only worked on 2 of the 4 revolutions Gardner recounts (Germany and Russia, with China and Mexico being ourside their respoective realms), and (2) The other problem is that Gardner never really shows any Anglo-American Cooperation. In fact, all he shows is Anglo-American sntagonism, from rebuffing British interests in Mexico to Wilson's furor over George's attempt to normalise relations with the Soviets. Only after the Washington Treaty did Anglo-American relations get any better.
To go along with Mr. Obert's review, the lack of domestic coverage as well as the poor readability of the work really doom it. Knock's To End All Wars is truly a better work and will easily recommend it over Safe for Democracy
Enjoyable Reading from Beginning to End.......2002-06-08
This book is at the same time informative and a good read. The author covers a wide range of actors and situations, tracing threads of events that culminated in Wilson's League of Nations. Not simply focusing on real-politics, the author emphasizes the importance of each nation's internal struggles (e.g. class struggle), the extra-national movements like communism, and the striking changes in global consciousness that challenged both imperialism and liberalism alike.
Excellent and fun read - highly recommended!
Sweeping, if often flawed, diplomatic work........1998-09-19
Gardner has produced a work which must be addressed, though it is plagued by flawed conclusions and choppy writing. Gardner focuses almost entirely on the foreign influences on Wilson during World War I and neglects the major domestic problems that were pulling at the president. This could be forgiven if not for the dry and lifeless manner in which Gardner lays out the diplomatic machinations of the world powers during the period. Be prepared to re-read several passages....and re-read several passages....and re-read several passages. For a better read on diplomacy during WWI, check out Thomas Knock's "To End All Wars"

a complete waste of paper.......2000-06-04
This CD case sized book is perfect for the coffee table (especially as a coaster). It gives a fairly quick and sloppy broad overview of the topic of Alchemy with some illustrations from the original alchemical tomes, but unless you know absolutely nothing about the subject, you'll learn nothing new. May make a great birthday gift for the 3rd grader child of pagans on your block.

Book Description
Multiresolution methods in geometric modelling are concerned with the generation, representation, and manipulation of geometric objects at several levels of detail. Applications include fast visualization and rendering as well as coding, compression, and digital transmission of 3D geometric objects.
This book marks the culmination of the four-year EU-funded research project, Multiresolution in Geometric Modelling (MINGLE). The book contains seven survey papers, providing a detailed overview of recent advances in the various fields within multiresolution modelling, and sixteen additional research papers. Each of the seven parts of the book starts with a survey paper, followed by the associated research papers in that area. All papers were originally presented at the MINGLE 2003 workshop held at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, UK, 9-11 September 2003.
Book Description
The classic poems and spine–tingling stories of a Gothic American master collected in one volume.
Of all the American masters, Edgar Allan Poe staked out perhaps the most unique and vivid reputation, as a master of the macabre. Even today, in the age of horror movies and high–tech haunted houses, Poe is the first choice of entertainment for many who want a spine–chilling thrill.
Born in Boston in 1809, and dead at the age of 40, Poe wrote across several fields during his life, noted for his poetry and short stories as well as his criticism. The best of each of these is collected here, including the classic poem The Raven, and timeless stories like The Tell–Tale Heart. In his introduction to this volume, G. R. Thompson argues that Poe was a great satirist and comedic craftsman, as well as a formidable Gothic writer. "All of Poe's fiction," Thompson writes, "and the poems as well, can be seen as one coherent piece – as the work of one of the greatest ironists of world literature."

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Compilation.......2001-10-09
This book is definitely worth the purchase. Some of Edgar Allan Poe's most popular writings, but also some less known that are equally valuable. This book essentially combines an economical price with a valuable amount of information, including a short biographical note about Poe himself. If you are looking for a research reference for any kind of report, or just to refresh your memory of some of his works, this is definitely the ideal book to add to your collection.
